‎City Plan and Political Agora. Results of the excavations conducted by Princeton University, the University of Illinois, and the University of Virginia. (Morgantina Studies VII).‎

‎Wiesbaden, Reichert, 2022 Hardcover, 444 pages, 32 x 25 cm. ENG -- . BRANDNEW!! . ISBN 9783752000214.‎

‎Excavations beginning in 1955 have made Morgantina into one of the most extensively known ancient cities in Sicily. Volume VII in the series Morgantina Studies describes both the new urban plan of the fifth century BCE and the city s public center or agora, where ten major buildings were added between the late classical and early Hellenistic periods, ca. 400-200 BCE. The ambitious city plan, probably owed to the charismatic indigenous leader Douketios, is shown to reflect the democratic movements of the early century BCE. The plan is characterized by lots of equal size and an unusually large agora for political assemblies. From the start the agora at Morgantina has been a focus of the U.S. excavations. Most buildings belong to an ambitious program adopted ca. 250 BCE, when the city lay under the sway of Hellenistic Syracuse. This was the age of Archimedes, Theokritos, and King Hieron II, whose economic and political reforms are perceptible at Morgantina. The building program exploited the generous available space. The result was a scenographic assemblage of monuments that took advantage of sight lines and changes in level to create a visually coherent whole. Volume VII of Morgantina Studies presents the material evidence for this major Hellenistic complex, offers reconstructions in the form of plans and drawings, and includes catalogues of objects from each structure. Political institutions are identified along with unusual building types and innovative details. While the agora of Morgantina offers a unique window on the lost civic architecture of Hellenistic Syracuse, it also documents the drastic local consequences of the second Punic war. Falling to Rome in 211 BCE, the city was depopulated and assigned to a band of mercenaries. Buildings that formerly housed political institutions were now largely given over to commerce and industry. Morgantina thus offers dramatic and detailed evidence for the traumatic effects on one Sicilian city of the transition from Syracusan to Roman rule. The book is intended for the interested public of scholars and students of ancient architecture and urbanism. Analysis of the relationship between architecture and political institutions will make it of interest to historians, as will the documentation of the specific consequences of depopulation and mercenary resettlement. Included is a study of the geology of the site by the late Sheldon Judson of Princeton University.‎

‎Roman Mosaics of Britain Volume IV: Western Britain‎

‎London, Society of Antiquaries of London, 2010 Hardback with dustjacket, 480 Pages, 31 x 25 cm. NEW. EN. ISBN 9780854312948.‎

‎This volume brings to a triumphant conclusion this monumental project to catalogue, describe and illustrate every Romano-British mosaic. The area covered by the fourth and final volume in the corpus is one of the richest regions of Britain in economic as well as architectural and artistic terms and this is reflected in the quantity and quality of the region's mosaics, which include the largest figured mosaic ever found in Britain - the Woodchester Orpheus pavement - which was perhaps the inspiration for the other famous Orpheus mosaics of the Roman Cotswolds. At the heart of this affluent region is Cirencester, Roman Britain's second largest town, represented here by more than sixty mosaics, the second-century examples being the most exquisite in the country. There are also many fine mosaics from the region's highly ornate villas, as well as from the towns of Gloucester, Caerwent and Wroxeter. The catalogue follows the format of earlier volumes in providing an account of each mosaic's discovery and locating the mosaic within its building plan. Following the description are notable parallels and major references. Many of the illustrations are by the authors, with additional ones by Luigi Thompson, as well as photographs and historical engravings, a high proportion of the latter by Samuel Lysons whose home was in Gloucestershire where he did much of his pioneering work in archaeological excavation and illustration. Brief biographies of Lysons and all the other artists whose work grace all four volumes appear at the end of this volume. As with previous volume the work is preceded with a substantial introduction. This deals with the history and topography of the region, buildings and rooms, an assessment of regional workshops, and schemes, ending with a consideration of mosaics in relation to the end of Roman Britain.‎

‎Chryselephantine Statuary in the Ancient Mediterranean World‎

‎Oxford, Oxford University Press, 2002 hardcover, Faux-linnen bound with dustjacket, 241 pages + 249 illustrations, 28 x 23 cm. ENG text . As new. ISBN 9780198153115.‎

‎Composite statues of gold (chrysos), ivory (elephas), and other precious materials were the most celebrated artworks of classical antiquity. Greek and Latin authors leave no doubt that such images provided a centrepiece for religious and civic life and that vast sums were spent to produce them. A number of these statues were the creations of antiquity's most highly acclaimed artists: Polykleitos, Alkamenes, Leochares, and, of course, Pheidias, whose magnificent Zeus Olympios came to be ranked among the Seven Wonders of the World. Although a few individual images such as Pheidias' Athena Parthenos have been the subject of detailed scholarly analysis, chryselephantine statuary as a class, from the exquisite statuettes of Minoan Crete to the majestic temple images constructed by classical Greek city-states and imitated by the Romans, has not received comprehensive study since 1815. This book presents not only the ancient literary and epigraphical evidence for lost statues and examines representations of them in other media, but also assembles and analyses much-neglected physical survivals, elucidating throughout the innovative techniques, such as ivory-bending, employed in their production as well as the variety of social, religious, and political roles they played within the ancient societies that produced them.‎

‎Sarcofagen Onder de sterren van Noet‎

‎Tielt, Lannoo, 2015 Softcover, 208 pagina's, 24 x 21 cm. NL. ISBN 9782873869649.‎

‎Power and Pathos: Bronze Sculpture of the Hellenistic World‎

‎Los Angeles, J. Paul Getty Museum, 2015 Hardcover with dustjacket, 367 pages,illustr. 30 x 25 cm. ENG ISBN 9781606064399.‎

‎For the general public and specialists alike, the Hellenistic period (323?31 BC) and its diverse artistic legacy remain underexplored and not well understood. Yet it was a time when artists throughout the Mediterranean developed new forms, dynamic compositions, and graphic realism to meet new expressive goals, particularly in the realm of portraiture. Rare survivors from antiquity, large bronze statues are today often displayed in isolation, decontextualized as masterpieces of ancient art. Power and Pathos gathers together significant examples of bronze sculpture in order to highlight their varying styles, techniques, contexts, functions, and histories. As the first comprehensive volume on large-scale Hellenistic bronze statuary, this book includes groundbreaking archaeological, art-historical, and scientific essays offering new approaches to understanding ancient production and correctly identifying these remarkable pieces. Designed to become the standard reference for decades to come, the book emphasizes the unique role of bronze both as a medium of prestige and artistic innovation and as a material exceptionally suited for reproduction. Power and Pathos is published on the occasion of an exhibition on view at Palazzo Strozzi in Florence from March 14 to June 21, 2015; at the J. Paul Getty Museum from July 20 through November 1, 2015; and at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, from December 6, 2015, through March 20, 2016.‎

‎The Villa dei Papiri at Herculaneumburied during the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in A.D. 79, then rediscovered in 1750 contained a large collection of bronze and marble statuary and busts. Before they were published or exhibited, the sculptures were restored so as to appear whole, thereby helping to shape early modern tastes in classical sculpture. This book describes the nature of the ancient sculptures and their impact on the modern public. Their chance discovery affected the interpretation of the statuestheir styles and subjectsover the course of the next 250 years. The ancient sculptures were copied extensively in reproductions of various sizes and patinas. The author traces the popularity of these copies in Europe and America. Also presented in the book is a technical study of the production techniques and materials of the sculptures, as well as of their modern restoration history. Scientific analyses and detailed photographs reveal both how the pieces were cast and pieced together in antiquity and how they were restored in the eighteenth century. Even though this collection has been known for two and a half centuries, this book covers for the first time the eclectic nature of the sculptures, their actual condition, and their quality, pointing in some cases to mass production.‎

‎TEMPLE DECORATION AND CULTURAL IDENTITY IN THE ARCHAIC GREEK WORLD: The Metopes of Selinus‎

‎Cambridge, Cambridge University Press, 2007 Hardcover with dustjacket, 352 pages, 130 illustrations, 26 x 15.5 cm. ENG text fine! ISBN 9780521857970.‎

‎In this book, Clemente Marconi provides a new interpretation for the use of figural decoration in Greek temples of the archaic period, through a study of the archaic metopes of Selinus. The study of figural decoration on Greek temples has traditionally been identified with the broader study of architectural sculpture. At the same time, the original, articulated appearance of archaic temples has been fragmented into a discussion of individual types. Marconi argues against both the typological approach and the tendency to investigate style and iconography as two aspects unrelated to the cultural and social background within which temple decoration operated. He explores the relation between style and function and examines the function of figures on temples within the cultural and social context of the communities for which these images were created. Critical to this exploration are the reintegration of the figures into the fabric of buildings, the space of archaic sanctuaries and cities, and the ritual dimension that represented the context for the reception of the figural decoration of Greek temples.‎

‎Princeton, American school of classical studies at athens, 1961 Blue cloth binding, 255 pages, 54 pages of illustrations, 30.5 x 23 cm. EN. ISBN 9780876612071.‎

‎Nearly 3,000 specimens of lamps of Roman character are catalogued in this volume that covers the period from the 1st century B. C. to the 8th century A. D. The lamps are not easy to classify because the appearance of the clay used is not an infallible guide to the place of manufacture and the molds used to create the shapes were used widely around the Mediterranean. Terracotta lamps were probably made for local consumption in most cities of Greece; only a few centers, notably Athens and Corinth, developed an export trade capable of competing with local manufacturers. Since lamps from Athens do appear at other sites, the presentation of a well-dated sample of these finds provides useful reference material for scholars working at other sites.‎

‎Brill Dictionary of Ancient Greek‎

‎Leiden, Brill, 2015 Hardcover, 2431 pages, 27 x 20 cm. ISBN 9789004193185.‎

‎The Brill Dictionary of Ancient Greek is also available online and as a two-volume boxed set. The Brill Dictionary of Ancient Greek is the English translation of Franco Montanari s Vocabolario della Lingua Greca. With an established reputation as the most important modern dictionary for Ancient Greek, it brings together 140,000 headwords taken from the literature, papyri, inscriptions and other sources of the archaic period up to the 6th Century CE, and occasionally beyond. The Brill Dictionary of Ancient Greek is an invaluable companion for the study of Classics and Ancient Greek, for beginning students and advanced scholars alike. Translated and edited under the auspices of The Center for Hellenic Studies in Washington, DC, The Brill Dictionary of Ancient Greek is based on the completely revised 3rd Italian edition published in 2013 by Loescher Editore, Torino. Features The principal parts of some 15,000 verbs are listed directly following the entry and its etymology. For each of these forms, the occurrence in the ancient texts has been certified. When found only once, the location is cited. Nearly all entries include citations from the texts with careful mention of the source. The dictionary is especially rich in personal names re-checked against the sources for the 3rd Italian edition, and in scientific terms, which have been categorized according to discipline. Each entry has a clear structure and typography making it easy to navigate. "For a number of years now, scholars at ease in Italian have benefitted enormously from the riches, layout, concision, and accuracy of Professor Montanari's Vocabolario della Lingua Greca, with its added advantage of the inclusion of names. Hence classicists in general will welcome the English version of this very valuable resource." ‎Zwolle, WBooks, 2011 Hardcover, 432 pagina's, 29 x 24.5 cm. NL.

‎Summary Hoards are among the most enigmatic of archaeological finds. The term 'hoard' itself has been applied to different assemblages across space and time, from the Stone Age into the modern era, with an inventory that typically includes artefacts made of valuable raw materials, to which significant symbolic meanings can also be assigned. Archaeologists have been trying to understand this phenomenon for much of the last century, sometimes emphasizing the universal nature of hoards, but more typically focusing on specific regions, chronologies, and finds. They have, for the most part, used results derived from typolo-chronological methods. Contemporary archaeology has, however, developed a broad spectrum of paradigms and methods, and hoardresearch in the twenty-first century draws on an increasingly wide range of approaches. This volume presents examples of research that make use of these multi-faceted approaches through a focus on European hoards of metal objects dating to the Bronze and Iron Ages. The contributors to this volume make use of diverse methods, among them archaeometallurgical analyses, studies of use- and production-wear, destruction patterns, and landscape archaeology, but together, their common denominator is the search for a methodological toolkit that will allow researchers to better understand the phenomenon of hoard-deposition more broadly. ‎Summary While archaeology is often considered to focus on the land that lies beneath our feet, significant amounts of material culture have been lost to us beneath water, whether in seas, lakes, rivers, or submerged caves. The world of underwater archaeology, however, is increasingly recognized as a field that is vital to our understanding of the past. The chapters gathered together into this volume draw on research first presented at the Fourth Warsaw Seminar on Underwater Archaeology, held at the University of Warsaw on 18-20 November 2021. From the seas of the Caribbean through to the Mediterranean and Norway, and from Antiquity through to contemporary times, the chapters presented here offer a dazzling array of different approaches to underwater archaeology and outline the potential that changing technology presents in this expanding field. ‎Summary Roman Imperial denarii from the first-third cen turies AD are, almost without exception, the most common ancient coinage to be found in Central, Northern, and Eastern Europe beyond the Roman limes. Perhaps surprisingly, however, a signifi cant percentage of these coins are in fact coun terfeit, comprised largely of denarii subaerati (plated denarii, fourr es) and denarii flati (base-metal cast copies). Moreover, these fake coins were not only manufactured by Romans them selves, but also by barbarian peoples in Eastern Europe, far from the Roman limes, in what should be considered a mass-scale phenomena. This volume draws together archaeologi cal, numismatic, and historical research in order to offer a new assessment of the production and use of counterfeit Roman Imperial denarii both within the European provinces of the Roman Empire and in European Barbaricum. Drawing on the results of the research project Barbarian Fakers. Manufacturing and Use of Counterfeit Roman Imperial Denarii in East-Central Europe in Antiquity, from the University of Warsaw, the papers gathered here explore the transfer of ideas, technology, and finished products that led to the transfer of counterfeit coinage across the Empire, and shed light on how, why, and when such coins were created and used. ‎Summary The spurs of horse riders have long been acknowledged as an important item of grave furniture in the Late Roman and Migration period burials of Poland, a reflection of the high social position held by the deceased. Yet while spurs have been studied at a general level, and typo-chronological studies have been conducted on spurs found in southern and central Poland, no such research has so far been conducted on finds from the West Balt Circle, in north-eastern Poland. This volume is an attempt to rectify the situation by offering a thorough examination of finds attributed to the Bogaczewo and Sudovian Cultures. The author here offers a comprehensive assessment of surviving materials from the period, many of which are scattered through museums across Europe, together with an in-depth analysis of archival sources (included among them the private inventories of archaeologists working in the pre-war period) in order to reconstruct our understanding of the furnishings and data relating to spurs. This detailed research, carefully contextualized against our wider understanding of Barbarian Europe, offers an important new reference for our understanding both of the West Balt Circle and its inter-cultural relations with surrounding regions, as well as of the symbolic meaning of spurs and their significance in burial rites. ‎Summary How did societies change between the Early Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age? And what was the impetus that led to these changes - social contacts and innovation, intergenerational contacts, or perhaps simply adaptation? Taking these questions as its starting point, this richly detailed volume explores four different regions of southern Poland to compare and contrast the mechanisms that drove socio-cultural change in the region between the second and the first half of the first millennium BC. Drawing on standardized sets of archaeological data, the chapters gathered here examine the interplay of different factors influencing cultural change across five key parameters: environment; settlement patterns; settlement organization; economy; and material culture. The result is a beautifully illustrated volume that offers important insights into Central and Eastern European prehistory, made accessible for an English-speaking audience. ‎Summary The Decapolis city of Jerash has long attracted attention from travellers and scholars, due both to the longevity of the site and the remarkable finds uncovered during successive phases of excavation that have taken place from 1902 onwards. Between 2011 and 2016, a Danish-German team, led by the universities of Aarhus and M nster, focused their attention on the Northwest Quarter of Jerash - the highest point within the walled city - and this volume is the seventh in a series of books presenting the team's final results. This volume provides an in-depth analysis into the ceramic materials found in Jerash's Northwest Quarter, much of which comes from largely undisturbed contexts. The ceramic finds presented in this volume are typo-chronologically evaluated and contextually analysed. The authors then use this dataset as a starting point to explore the micro- and macro-networks that existed in ancient Gerasa from Roman to Early Islamic times more broadly, examining how finely meshed exchange could take place on a micro-regional level, and assessing what conditions were required in order for trade to occur.
