This volume the second to publish the results of Seele's two seasons of excavations in Nubia presents Neolithic A-Group and Post-A-Group remains from Qustul Ballana and Adindan. Neolithic remains were only found in a cave behind the village of Adindan and consist of sherds some implements a human skull and fragments of decorated ostrich eggshell. The cave is comparable to caves found deep in Sudan and represents a northern extension of the cultures well known in the area of the second cataract. Also included in this volume are A-Group remains from cemeteries other than Cemetery L and Post-A-Group remains from two burials dated between the end of A-Group and the beginning of C-Group that can be compared with others in the region to identify a limited occupation in a period where none has been thought to exist in recent years. First edition.<br /><br />Teotihuacan located in the Basin of Central Mexico was the largest most influential and certainly most revered city in the history of the New World and it flourished in Mesoamerica's Golden Age the Classic Period of the first millennium CE. Dominated by two gigantic pyramids and a huge sacred avenue the city its architecture art and religion would influence all subsequent Mesoamerican cultures and it remains today the most visited ancient site in Mexico. The art of Teotihuacan as represented in sculpture pottery and murals is highly stylized and minimalist. Stone masks were made using jade basalt greenstone and andesite often highly polished and with details especially eyes rendered using shell or obsidian. These masks were also made in clay and both types would once have adorned statues and mummy bundles. A great many buildings at Teotihuacan were decorated with murals most of which portray religious events especially processions but also scenes with details of landscape and architecture and especially watery scenes such as fountains and rivers. Scenes also include gylphs suggesting the existence of a writing system even if much less varied and sophisticated than that used by the contemporary Maya. Painted using the true fresco technique the work was then given a final polish. Bright colours were used and shades of red were especially popular and used to most often depict gods sacrifices and warriors. In the more modest buildings repeated patterns were also painted using stencils to create an effect much like modern wallpaper.<br /><br />Condition:<br /><br />Corners bumped some occasional underlining light edge wear spine ends lightly rubbed else a very good copy. One characteristic of Monte Albán is the large number of carved stone monuments one encounters throughout the plaza. The earliest examples are the so-called "Danzantes" literally dancers found mostly in the vicinity of Building L and which represent naked men in contorted and twisted poses some of them genitally mutilated. The figures are said to represent sacrificial victims which explains the morbid characteristics of the figures. The Danzantes feature physical traits characteristic of Olmec culture. The 19th century notion that they depict dancers is now largely discredited and these monuments dating to the earliest period of occupation at the site Monte Albán I are now seen to clearly represent tortured sacrificed war prisoners some identified by name and may depict leaders of competing centers and villages captured by Monte Albán Marcus and Flannery 1996; Blanton et al. 1996. Over 300 "Danzantes" stones have been recorded to date and some of the better preserved ones can be viewed at the site's museum.
