First edition.<br /><br />In this study the pottery of southern Alberta has been divided into two major ceramic complexes labelled Saskatchewan Basin and Cluny Respectively and the former has been subdivided into Early and Late Variants. It is evident that the Saskatchewan Basin complex is present throughout the Late Prehistoric and Protohistoric periods but that the Cluny complex is limited to the Protohistoric only. The Saskatchewan Basin complex appears to have originated in the pottery of southern Saskatchewan and Manitoba to the east and has very little correspondence to materials in the Missouri Basin and Central Plains regions to the south. In contrast the Cluny complex is obviously derived from ceramic transitions centering in the Middle Missouri area by way of similar industries in southern Saskatchewan and possibly northern Montana. <br /><br />Condition:<br /><br />Edge wear corners bumped with creases. Until now archaeologists have been capable of little more than speculation concerning the extent of human mobility in the prehistoric Southwest. According to George J. Gumerman in his Foreword to this book however "Shirley Powell’s study has changed that. Using a combination of archaeological and ethnological data she has been able to demonstrate that certain periods on Black Mesa in Northeastern Arizona are characterized by great mobility while at other times the Mesa had a more sedentary population. She has taken the question of seasonality in occupation from the realm of speculation to that of testable hypothesis." Powell’s major concern throughout this study is with behavior variability. Specifically she addresses the adequacy of "behavioral interpretations of material culture patterns for the Black Mesa region of northeastern Arizona." She notes that sometimes the descriptions from which explanations of variability are based are misleading or incorrect. Examining the relationships "among environment subsistence and mobility strategies" she emphasizes the role of seasonality in site locational strategies. Using data derived from ethnographic and ethnoarchaeological sources she develops a model of subsistence/settlement interrelationships which she tests by using "material culture remains from prehistoric sites." First edition.<br /><br />The archaeological site of Dzibilchaltun is located on the southwestern coastal plain of the Yucatan Peninsula approximately 20 kilometers south of the Gulf of Mexico and 15 kilometers north of the modern city of Merida. The region is a flat limestone plain about 5 meters above sea level. One large and deep natural well Cenote Xlacah is located near the center of the archaeological site. The site has been continuously occupied for thousands of years although it has expanded and contracted from mid-sized city to small town more than once in its long history. The most famous structure is the Temple of the Seven Dolls. The temple was discovered by archaeologists in the 1950s under the ruins of a larger pyramid which was constructed on top of The Temple of the Dolls. Building temples on top of temples was a common practice with the Maya. The dolls were found in the buried temple but are now housed in the museum to protect and preserve these architectural features. Though the dolls have been moved the ingenuity of this building remains. The Temple of the Dolls and its temple doorways were constructed in a specific and deliberate direction that confirms the Maya understanding of the solar system. During the Spring and Autumn equinox the sun’s rays pass through the doorways of the temples. Limited to 1000 copies. 1st edition.This study was conducted with the goal of characterizing a specific group of polychrome stuccoed ceramic shards from the Maquixco Bajo archaeological site at Teotihuacan Mexico. Teotihuacan is located northeast of Mexico City and dates to the Classic Period ca 150-750 A.D. Analysis included pigment identification stucco identification characterization of the ceramic surface preparation as well as further investigation into binders and the technology of application. The layered structure of the stucco decoration is described. Analytical techniques used included scanning electron microscopy SEM x-ray powder diffraction XRD Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy FTIR microchemical testing and polarized light microscopy. Results indicate that red and yellow pigments are primarily iron oxides blue and green pigments are mixtures of azurite and malachite with chrysocolla and most black pigments contain charcoal black. Ground layers are made up of calcite or clay as well as mixtures of the two materials. These included the construction of an independent chronological framework for the Rio Bec zone; the establishment of a firm chronological and typological bridge between the isolated culture sequences of northwestern Yucatan and the southern Maya lowlands; and the dating of the massive defensive network at Becan suspected to be of either Late or Terminal Classic age.
