The catalogue is prefaced by detailed comments on previous attempts to compile earthquake catalogues for the area up to the present, and by discussion of the primary source material utilised, in both Middle Eastern and occidental languages. The book contains maps of the regions affected by the larger earthquakes, and a general table of the events associated with the little-known seismic history of a fast-developing area of the Eastern Mediterranean. The photographs taken in Turkey by São Paulo (Brazil) born photographer Norair Chahinian strike viewers in a number of different ways. First through their witnessing of life in various regions of Anatolia 'from the outside', by someone who has come all the way from across the world, thousands of kilometers afar. But more importantly, through their depiction 'from within' of the return of an Armenian to his roots in Maras, Urfa, Iskenderun, as he visits the land of his family after a gigantic lapse of one hundred years. Norair Chahinian was born in Brazil as the child of a family that had fallen victim to the Committee of Union and Progress' genocidal politics against Armenians during the final era of the Ottoman Empire. His grandmothers and grandfathers had lost their families during those days of catastrophe, took refuge in Aleppo, Syria, under dire circumstances and had migrated to Brazil, South America. This quest brought the photographer to Turkey where he knew no one, did not speak the language; where he was familiar neither with the climate nor the ways of the people. But in no way as a tourist. He came here determined to build a bridge between the past and present, as the last link of a family who was the victim and witness of the catastrophe experienced one hundred years ago but had managed to live, survive and build a new life on the other side of the ocean. "Amasya has traces in Dogantepe Höyük that go as far back as to the latter period of the Late Neolithic Age and, as Sevket Dönmez notes in his article, "Amasya is one of the rare Anatolian cities to have kept its name (Amasea, Amaseia, Amasseia, Amaseia Hadriane, Amaseia Severiane Antoniane, Amaseia Severeia Alexandreia) almost intact from time immemorial. Amasya is on the Yesilirmak River that in Hittite texts is named 'Kummeshmaha' and in the classical era was called 'Iris'. The Yesilirmak flows from west to east along the long narrow channel it carves in the limestone and travertine rocks. Towering immediately north of the river is Mount Harsena where the city's castle is built." It is a common belief that the love of Ferhat and Sirin found a home in Amasya. In his article Sevket Dönmez remarks that, "the Anatolian version of the epic love story of Princess Sirin and Ferhad - Sirin being the sister of Queen Mahmene Banu, Azerbaijan's ruler of the city of Erzen; Ferhad being the region's famous craftsman- is set in Amasya where it has left a mark on the town's historical topography and archaeology. The two simple graves side by side on Mount Ferhad today have been attributed to Ferhad and Sirin, illustrating how contemporary and popular the story is." Amasya, Maid of the Mountains, is about the cultural heritage of a city that has been the cradle rich in popular culture and belief systems. Sevket Dönmez looks at the city as an antique settlement and portrays Pontic Cappadocia in his article about Oluz Höyük. E. Emine Naza Dönmez emphasizes the importance of Harsena Castle and Kizlar Sarayi for the city and she also focuses on the architecture in the Turkish Period. Muzaffer Doganbas describes the woodcraft in the region, and also the belief systems and sacred buildings. I. Hakki Göztas scrutinizes the historical development of the city and its secular architecture. The photographers Ali Konyali and Tarkan Kutlu held a mirror to the city of Amasya in this monograph prepared by Filiz Özdem.

The archives of Bogazici University and Robert Collage are normally introduced at Columbia University's Rare Books and Manuscripts Library in New York. However, following the protocol signed between the two universities, digital copies of the documents were sent to Turkey. The archive that unearths over a century of history includes more than 200,000 documents. A huge selection of Ottoman-era magazines such as "Servet-i Fünun," "Asri Türkiye Mecmuasi," and Republican-era daily papers including "Cumhuriyet," "Milliyet," "Medan," "Baris" and "Aksam," as well as news and comments about Turkey in the international media such as The New York Times and National Geographic are open for visitors. It seems that the Marmaray is more than just a Turkish project to improve public trans-portation in Istanbul, but part of the Silk Road, which has served humanity for centuries, connecting Asia and Europe. Moreover, this project will revive historical silk road. That road was not only caravan road but a road that links Western and Eastern civilizations. Nowadays China is also planning to make serious investment to revive "the New Silk Road" that will run through Central Asia and continue into Europe facilitating improved transport and trade. Globalization generally refers to the increased interdependence of the world's economies signified by the circulation of information, money, people and goods across national boundaries. It has of late, given rise to the domination of world's market by a selected number of transnational corporations. However, since time immemorial, different countries were related to one another through geographical spread of ideas, social norms and trading commodi-ties. This premodern phase of globalisation is known as "archaic globalization". In the fol-lowing years we will see that the new projects realised by the countries on the historical Silk Road will play a key role on the new integration process between the east and west as well as the north and the south. The papers in this book invite us to rethink and focus on Silkroad.".
