‎LEGIO XX VALERIA VICTRIX; Prosopography Archaeology and History‎

‎Archaeopress. 2006. Softcover. Fine. British Archaeological Reports BAR International Series 1491; 287 pages; This study of legio XX Valeria Victrix combines a personal historical and archaeological approach to the study of the legion roughly the first four centuries after Christ as a whole. Epigraphic and historical evidence is presented for all those individuals known to have served with the Twentieth Legion in their various capacities. Sources are quoted with translation for each of these and significant details of the careers discussed. Further aspects of careers generally are considered at the end of the relevant sections. This corpus is supported by a number of indices of nomenclature origins ranks service and posts held in other units etc. as well as an index of primary sources. Other inscriptions attesting to the presence of the Twentieth legion and its activities in various quarters of the Empire are also collected and presented. This epigraphic evidence is drawn together with that of the archaeological and historical sources and with the copious modern literature on the subject of the Roman Army to present a history of the Twentieth Legion from its formation out of the legions of the civil wars of the late Republic to its uncertain end in the changing conditions of the late third and fourth centuries. Particular emphasis is placed on the role of individuals and the light that their careers can shed on the history and activities of the legion. Studies on a number of other aspects of the history and organization of the legion are appended. . 1841719226 . Archaeopress paperback‎

‎CARAUSIUS; A Consideration of the Historical Archaeological and Numismatic Aspects of His Reign‎

‎Archaeopress. 2004. Softcover. Fine. British Archaeological Reports B. A. R. British Series 378; 101 pages; This study relates the significant bronze coinage of the usurper Carausius 286-93 to the archaeological and historical evidence from the period. Since the publication of Roman Imperial Coinage. Volume Vii in 1933 many new and significant coin types have appeared. Several important hoards have been published in the intervening years which throw a new light on discussions of the chronology of the coinage enabling a modified sequence of issues to be postulated. Part of an important hoard discovered in the 1980Aes has been reconstituted. Much information regarding the archaeology of Roman Britain in the latter half of the third century has been published during the last three decades and this is discussed in conjunction with the coin evidence of site finds. Consideration is made of the probable methods employed in the striking of the coinage and a new mathematical method is invoked to yield a more accurate picture of the supply of coinage under the Carausian administration. A study of the metrology of the bronze coinage is made and this includes the illustration of the metrology with a three-dimensional surface using computer graphics. Consideration of the geographical distribution of the index-marked coinage has enabled a new interpretation of the location of the minting centres to be forwarded. The older historical sources have been reconsidered and important new interpretations have been made. Certain aspects of the coinage which relate to the history have been examined in the light of newly discovered coin types. The study involved the examination of approximately seven thousand specimens of the coinage from both public and private collections and excavations. . 1841716561 . Archaeopress paperback‎

‎TREES AND TIMBER IN THE ANCIENT MEDITERRANEAN WORLD‎

‎Oxford University Press. 1985. Hardcover. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. Light foxing to text block else Fine. Minor shelfwear to DJ. DJ is faded.; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 598 pages; This is the first comprehensive study of timber supply and demand in the Near East and the world of ancient Greece and Rome. Drawing from a wide range of literary epigraphic and archaeological sources Meiggs traces changing patterns in their historical setting and examines the timber requirements of fleets and armies building agriculture and sculpture and furniture. He also draws a tentative outline of the structure of the timber trade with special emphasis on transport and determines that the part played by Greece and Rome in deforestation has been greatly exaggerated. . 0198148402 . Dustjacket has a few small tears and chipping.; Oxford Monographs on Classical Archaeology; 286 pages; This study places the inscriptions found on Athenian vases in the context of the early development of writing in Athens. Focusing on the period from the invention of the alphabet in the 8th century B.C. to the early 4th century B.C. when the local alphabet had been supplanted by the common Ionic script the book presents inscriptions on stone both public and private scratched inscriptions on pottery including the political ostraca and some inscriptions on lead tablets. Although the vase inscriptions are brief they number in the thousands and give an accurate picture of the art of writing and the state of literacy in the Classical Period. . 0198132239 . Munn establishes the place of the Dema wall in the defense of Athens and offers a completely new perspective on the Boiotian War. ‎LIFE AND LABOUR IN LATE ROMAN SILCHESTER; Excavations in Insula IX since 1997‎

‎Society for the Promotion of Roman Studies. 2006. Softcover. Near Fine. Very light edgwear else fine. Gift inscription from one editor Fulford to ffep.; Britannia Monograph Series No. 22; 384 pages; The Society of Antiquaries' excavation of Silchester's Insula IX in 1893-4 left most of the stratigraphy undisturbed. A new programme of work has shown that the Insula underwent radical change c. AD 250/300 with the construction of new workshop and residential buildings on the orientation of the Roman street-grid following the demolition of mid-Roman buildings arranged on different pre- and early Roman alignments. The plans of several properties and individual buildings were recovered and analysis of the rich range of artefactual and biological data has allowed a detailed and differentiated characterisation of the life and occupations of the inhabitants in the 4th century. The context of the 5th century ogham-inscribed stone is explored and the history of the insula is followed into the 5th/6th century.; Signed by Editor . 0907764339 . ‎Society for the Promotion of Roman Studies. 1997. Softcover. Near Fine. Very light edgewear else Fine. Small crease to back upper corner.; Britannia Monograph Series; 448 pages; The Roman fort at Loughor was founded in c. AD 75 and occupied continuously until the early 120s. The fort was then reduced and was reoccupied from c. 270 until the early fourth century. Excavation was concentrated on the defences and part of the interior. Detailed examination of the defences enabled useful analysis of construction methods. In the interior of the Flavio-Trajanic fort a sequence of granaries was followed by a series of praetoria. Analysis of these buildings has enabled a reconsideration of the form and function of Commander's houses in auxiliary forts. This volume includes full reports on the finds which included coins lamps glass and intaglios. . 0907764215 . Society for the Promotion of Roman Studies paperback‎

‎ARCHAEOLOGY MEETS SCIENCE: BIOMOLECULAR INVESTIGATIONS IN BRONZE; The Primary Scientific Evidence 1997-2003‎

‎Oxbow Books. 2008. Hardcover. Fine in No Dust Jacket dust jacket. 328 pages; This book has come out of a project that pioneered and is continuing to pioneer the in-depth application of state of the art scientific analyses to ceramic artefacts and skeletal material. The vases and skeletons of Bronze Age Greece which are the subjects of this comprehensive study do not appear as they do in their usual format - illustrations in a book with descriptions of contexts. In this project and therefore in this book each object is revealed from the inside and because of this it has a different story to tell - what people ate and drank in everyday life the diet and health of the people who lived in Bronze Age Greece. By means of organic residue and stable isotope analysis knowledge has been extended beyond anything previously gleaned through normal archaeological research. There are some fascinating insights such as the origin of modern Greek retsina which was traced first to the time of Agammemnon then to Crete in the 17th century BC and finally to the Early Minoan Period c. 2000 BC. The results of this ground breaking project have been presented in 7 international exhibitions starting with the National Archaeological Museum in Athens in 1999. It is the most widely travelled exhibition of Greek artefacts ever mounted. This volume gives the reader the ultimate "story within the story": the primary scientific evidence behind the work that has been carried out up to 2003. It has been written by the world renowned scientists who carried out the work. . 1842172387 . Oxbow Books hardcover‎
