The Iznik Tile Kiln Excavations (The second round: 1981-1988). Edited by Tülay Duran.
New English Original cloth bdg. 4to. (31 x 22 cm). Edition in English. 326 p., color and b/w ills. The Iznik Tile Kiln Excavations (The second round: 1981-1988). Edited by Tülay Duran. "The progress taking place in the second round of excavations of Iznik tile kilns was starting point for the declaration of 1989 as 'The year of Iznik'. This object of this book is to provide a scholarly classification and presentation of the results of excavations that are product of eight years of effort. The finds turned up both in the first round of excavations (which began in 1964) and in the second have been eagerly awaited by Turkish and foreign art historians. We believe that the results of the work at Iznik will be an important source of information for the International Iznik Symposium that is to be held in Istanbul this year. A veil of mystery, reinforced by foreign sources, has shrouded Iznik tiles and pottery and led to a number of misinterpretations. We believe that through this book, that veil will be lifted for it proves -among other things- the error of such mistaken classifications as 'Miletos ware', 'Damascus ware', and 'Rhodes [Rhodos] ware' while at the same time in reveals the connection between Iznik ceramics manufacture and Seljuk ceramic manufacture, a fact of importance from the standpoint of the continuity of Turkish culture...". (From preface by Isil Aybakgil). One of 500 copies.

Karia Arkhaia: La Carie, des origines a la periode pre-hekatomnide (Recontres 2013).
New English Paperback. 4to. (28 x 20 cm). Articles in French, English and German, and Turkish. 604 p., color and b/w ills. Karia Arkhaia: La Carie, des origines a la periode pre-hekatomnide. This volume brings together 27 papers presented at the 'Rencontres d'Archéologie de l'IFEA' devoted to the 'early' periods of a region of southwest Asia Minor: Caria. Several recent studies have significantly advanced Carian studies, but these have been limited to chronological fields from the Hekatomnids to the end of the Roman Empire. It has therefore seemed useful to propose around a symposium and its publication a state of knowledge for periods prior to the Hekatomnids by offering both archaeologists to present unpublished archaeological material, resulting from recent (often rescue) excavations, and historians to expose their latest reflections based on material already known but reassessed in the light of new discoveries. Archival memories: Marcell Restle's research in Anatolia and beyond.
New English Paperback. 4to. (28 x 23 cm). In English. 192 p., ills. Archival memories: Marcell Restle's research in Anatolia and beyond. Authors: Su Sultan Akülker, Klaus Belke, Birgitt Borkopp-Restle, Friedrich Hild, Cedric Huss, Johannes Koder, Caroline Mang, Philipp Pichler, Nina Rannharter, Marcell Restle, Lioba Theis, B. Tolga Uyar, Peter Waldhausl... Marcell Restle was born in 1932 in a small town named Bad Waldsee in southern Germany and studied art history, Byzantine studies, and the history of Christianity at the universities of Tu?bingen and Munich. The classes Restle took from German and Turkish professors at Istanbul University, where he studied for a year, opened up new horizons for him. The studies he made of Islamic, Seljuk, and, especially, Ottoman art and architecture, as well as of Byzantine art; the classes he taught at the universities of Vienna and Munich on these topics; and the countless study trips he made around the Eastern Mediterranean, including to Istanbul and Anatolia, made him an expert in the field of architecture, especially in the systematic documentation of buildings. "Archival Memories" on the one hand informs viewers about how a researcher organized his working day, how he systematically allotted his time, and what methods he used in the pre-digital age. On the other hand, it aims to present from retrospective perspectives the states of numerous cultural assets, most of which remain today only as memories within urban structures.

SEBASTIAN MÜNSTER, (Map-maker), (1488-1552).
[HAND-COLOURED MAP of ASIA MINOR by MÜNSTER] Von den Landern Asie.
Very Good German Original hand-colored map. 4to. 27x19 cm, with cartoon frame: 40x30 cm. A decorative small map of Asia Minor, from east to the Euphrates, South to the Mediterranean, North to the Black Sea and including Thracia (Thrace). It shows Thracia, Bithynia, Pontus, Paphlagonia, Galatia, Phrygia Minor, Mysia, Phrygia Maior, Lydia, Ionia, Ephesos, Meandros, Lycus [Valley], Caria, Lycia, Pamphylia, Cilicia, Lycaoni, Pisidia, Argos Mt., Taurus Mt., Sebastia, Cappadocia, Armenia, Syria, Nicopolis. Seas decorated with sea monsters. The land filled with mountains. "Münster's Cosmography was one of the most influential geographical works of the 16th Century. It was published in a number of editions over a half century and was continuously revised and updated to include new illustrations and updated information. Sebastian Münster (1488-1552) was a cosmographer and professor of Hebrew who taught at Tübingen, Heidelberg, and Basel. He settled in the latter in 1529 and died there, of plague, in 1552. As a young man, Münster joined the Franciscan order and studied philosophy in Heidelberg. He also studied geography and mathematics in Loewen, as well as Hebrew at Freiburg. In 1512, he was ordained as a priest and taught philosophy and theology at Tübingen from 1514 to 1518. While in Tübingen, he also conducted further studies in geography. He moved to Basel in 1518 and published a Hebrew grammar, one of the first books in Hebrew published in Germany. In 1521 Münster moved again, back to Heidelberg, where he continued to publish Hebrew texts and the first German-produced books in Aramaic. After converting to Protestantism in 1529, he took over the chair of Hebrew at Basel, where he published his main Hebrew work, a two-volume Old Testament with a Latin translation. Münster made himself the center of a large network of scholars from whom he obtained geographic descriptions, maps, and directions. He published his first known map, a map of Germany, in 1525. Three years later, he released a treatise on sundials. In 1540, he published Geographia universalis vetus et nova, an updated edition of Ptolemy's Geographia. In addition to the Ptolemaic maps, Münster added 21 modern maps. One of Münster's innovations was to include one map for each continent, a concept that would influence Ortelius and other early atlas makers. The Geographia was reprinted in 1542, 1545, and 1552. Münster is best known today for his Cosmographia universalis, the first German-language description of the world. It was first published in 1554 and contained 471 woodcuts and 26 maps over 6 volumes. Many of the maps were taken from the Geographia and modified over time. It was released in at least 46 editions in 6 languages by 1650, with 21 German editions alone. The Cosmographia was widely used in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and the text, woodcuts, and maps all influenced geographical thought for generations.".

ISABELLA CANEVA, GIULIO PALUMBI.
The Chalcolithic at Mersin Yumuktepe. Level XVI reconsidered.
New English Paperback. 4to. (30 x 21 cm). In English. 192 p., color and b/w ills. The Chalcolithic at Mersin Yumuktepe. Level XVI reconsidered. The final publication of Level XVI at Mersin-Yumuktepe is the terminal step of a long-term project. The aim of this publication is to integrate the data obtained by J. Garstang during the excavations conducted at Mersin-Yumuktepe (1936-39 and 1946-47) and published in 1953 in the monograph "Prehistoric Mersin", with those produced during the excavations carried out from 1993 to 2004, under the direction of I. Caneva, for a comprehensive reconstruction of one of the most notorious levels of occupation at Yumuktepe. The long prehistoric occupational sequence reconstructed by Garstang, the first to have been established in the archaeology of Cilicia, quickly became one of the main references in the Near Eastern, Levantine and East Mediterranean archaeology. In this framework, the unique evidence represented by the "Citadel" of the Level XVI was often considered as a "hall-mark" of Yumuktepe and a recurring "topos" of the archaeological discourse dealing with the chalcolithic societies of the region. To confront with such a "giant" of the Near Eastern archaeology and with the heritage left by Garstang has not been an easy task. The integration of heterogeneous data produced in the frame of different practices, epistemologies and narratives of archaeology has required a long, continuous and sometimes quizzical process of interpolation and negotiation between past and present archaeological evidence aimed at a detailed and attentive reconstruction of the economic, social and cultural developments of the Early-Chalcolithic community at Yumuktepe. Contents: Preface.; Giulio Palumbi and Isabella Caneva / An Introduction to Yumuktepe Level XVI.; Section I - The Settlement.; 1. Emanuela Brunacci / Topographic survey and graphic rendering 2. Isabella Caneva / Yumuktepe Level XVI: the field data 3. A monument in Lycia: The church of Saint Nicholas in Myra.= Likya'da bir anit: Myra'nin Aziz Nikolaos kilisesi.
New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 15 cm). In English and Turkish. 172 p., color and b/w ills. A monument in Lycia: The church of Saint Nicholas in Myra.= Likya'da bir anit: Myra'nin Aziz Nikolaos kilisesi. Today, the church associated with St. Nicholas, namely the Church of St. Nicholas, is located in the ancient city of Myra, within the district of modern Demre. Resulting from the alluvium carried by the rivers, the structure remains 7.5-9 meters below ground level today. It is through these alluvial deposits that the structure had been preserved to a large extent. The Church of St. Nicholas was a prominent building in the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Period. The Church of St. Nicholas is a basilica type structure. The Outer Narthex of the church was reorganized during the 1862 renovation while the Inner Narthex rising above the older foundations of the structure, survived to our day. The oldest wall paintings in the church, which date to the 11th century AD, are painted on the vaults of the Inner Narthex. Arranged into six scenes, these wall paintings depict the bishops and emperors in council (there are two different painting levels in the area south of the middle vault). Prophet figures are depicted on the arches separating the vaults of the Inner Narthex.Inside the dome of the northeastern section of the church, we find the Communion Scene, in which Christ is offering the Apostles bread (rightward) and wine (leftward). This scene, which is dated to the 11th-12th centuries AD, reflects the stylistic characteristics of the capital Constantinople. The wall paintings on the South Burial Chamber have become clearer and more comprehensible after restoration. The wall paintings inside the burial niches on the northern wall of this section have been restored. Among these, there are 5 feast scenes, 15 scenes from the life story of St. Nicholas depicted on the arches of the niches and 45 figures of saints, bishops, martyrs and monks. During the restorations works, new geometric and vegetal motifs have also been discovered.

In English and Persian (parallel text in all descriptions of visual materials; historical texts also bilingual in English and Persian separate). 12, [3], 585 p., many color and b/w ills. and photos. Gouy-O-Chogân: The ball and the polo stick in history, culture and art of Iran.= Guy va chugan: Der gustere tarikh, farhang va hanr Iran. English translation by Shirin Samii. [BOXED]. According to historical documents, the polo game in Iran is more than 3000 years old and has been uninterrupted throughout history and has become so intertwined with the history, culture, art and literature of Persian land that it has become part of every Iranian's identity. There are thousands of important historical documents from the polo game about different periods of history, some of which are mentioned in this book. The role of the polo and the polo stick, the spread of this game dating back 3000 years to the empires of Zoroastrianism, Achaemenid and Sasanid, and the continuation of it to the present day, is clearly seen in the seals found in the archaeological excavations in the large plateaus of Iran. One of the most important challenges of this study was the lack of reliable researches and sources of polo game from the prehistoric period to the Achaemenid period and the dispersal of recorded sources from the Achaemenid Empire to the Islamic period of Iran. Undoubtedly, if more extensive researches are done in different periods of ancient Iranian history, more and more traces of the game of polo can be traced and recorded.
