"The "Images in Terracotta" exhibition being held on 18 November 2011-15 April 2012 consists of Greek and Roman period terracotta figurines in the Vehbi Koc Foundation Sadberk Hanim Museum.Production of figurines can be traced back to prehistoric times, when people began to depict sacred entities or figures they held in regard. These were made of diverse materials, depending on the period and region. In antiquity the preferred material was terracotta. The earliest examples were shaped by hand, but in later centuries moulding techniques were introduced and mass production began.The terracotta figurines dating from Greek and Roman periods that are the subject of this exhibition were principally used as votive offerings or grave gifts, as demonstrated both by ancient written sources and archaeological excavations. Figurines representing gods and goddesses predominate among those with sacred significance. In addition the exhibition includes figurines that reflect daily life in antiquity, such as mothers nursing their babies or sewing.".

HÂMIT ZÜBEYR KOSAY, (Turkish archaeologist, ethnographer, writer and folklore researcher), (1897-1984).
Autograph letter signed 'H. Kosay' with its envelope, addressed to Ibrahim Hakki Konyali, (1896-1984).
Very Good Turkish Original ALS by Hamid Zübeyr Kosay sent to Ibrahim Hakki Konyali. With its envelope. 21x14,4 cm. In Turkish. He congratulates Konyali and he says that he's working on the ancient civilizations reports, and he has to return his ex-duty in Ethnography Museum. He praises 'Tarih Dünyasi' periodical which was a historical magazine published in 1950s by Konyali. Hamit Zübeyir was a Turkish archaeologist, ethnographer, writer, and folklore researcher. He was the son of Ubeydullah Efendi who was a scholar of the period and Rizaetdin Fäxretdin (a close friend of Musa Carullah) a famous scientist, was his brother-in-law. He was sent to Turkey with the support of Rizaetdin Fäxretdin for his education in 1909. He graduated from Thessalonica Central Secondary School in 1911. At the break of the Balkan War, he returned to Istanbul when he was in Sultaniye. He finished the teacher training school in 1916 and became a teacher. After attending courses on ethnography and the Hungarian language at university for the winter semester, he went to Hungary to continue his education where he completed pedagogy. He was accepted to the Advanced Teachers Training School at Eötvös Kollegium (Eötvös Loránd University with the support of Prof. Ne'meth Gyula. Then he attended the same university's Faculty of Philosophy and received the title of Doctor of Language and Turcology. He went to Germany in 1924 to attend the courses of Prof. Bang Koup at Berlin University and did research at the State Library and museums. In 1925 he returned to Turkey and worked at the Ministry of National Education. After working as the Inspector of Libraries at the Ministry of Culture he was a director for the Department of Culture, Antique Works, and Libraries at the same ministry. He continued as the General Director of Antique Works and Museums, board member of Culture Training, and for the second time as the Director of the Ethnography Museum. He retired on 1 December 1969 after working for two years as Deputy Director of the Ethnography Museum and Consulting General Director of Antique Works and Museums.

Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original manuscript autograph letter/document signed by Halil Edhem Eldem as the director of Müze-yi Humâyûn [i.e. The first Ottoman / Turkish Archaeological Museum] sent to Mehmed Fuaad Köprülü, (1890-1966), requesting the return of books (listed on letter) borrowed from the museum's library. 35x21 cm. In Ottoman script. Includes 10 lines. Water stain on a big area on the paper. The script is fine and legible. A couple of punch-holes on the left side. Otherwise a good paper. Mentioned books are written at the beginning of the letter as a list: 1. Mongol history in French. 2. Jornal Azbatin (?). 3. Hun tarihi [i.e. History of Huns]. 4. A manuscript on the Ottoman geography. An interesting and rare manuscript. Halil Bey is an important figure in Turkish cultural history who operated in the late Ottoman period and the beginning of the Republic period. As he was the head of the Asari Atîka Museum, he was mostly interested in ancient works, but also worked on Turkish-Islamic inscriptions and coins. Halil Bey, who made important contributions to the development of Turkish museums, made efforts to collect and publish hundreds of inscriptions in Anatolia and to protect and restore Turkish architectural works.

Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original manuscript autograph letter written with a fine riq'a script signed by Naum Nimetullah Pasha as 'Paris Sefîr-i Kebîri' [i.e. Paris ambassador] of the Imperial Ottoman, addressed to 'Ottoman Foreign Ministry', on the Ottoman princes that [Abdürrahim] Muhib Pasha sent to Paris for education. Includes 12 lines. Full. 25x15,5 cm. In Ottoman script. 1 p. Sealed as 'Naum, 1314'. Dated fî 11 Rubu'üssani sene [1]326 AR = fî 22 Tesrînisânî [1]324] AH = 1908 AD. Naum Pasha, (The governor of Cebel-i Lebanon between 1892-1902; ambassador of Paris, France between 1908-1911), was an undersecretary in the Foreign Ministry of Imperial Ottoman at the time of his Lebanon appointment and enjoyed the confidence of a number of senior Ottoman statesmen. He was also a favored candidate of the Maronite Church by virtue of being the nephew and son-in-law of Franko Kusa, the second governor of the mutasarrifiyya, he was still remembered for his friendly relations with the Church. Furthermore, Naum gained the support of Mustafa Arslan by reappointing him to the district-governorship of Shuf-albeit reluctantly, under pressure from a number of Mustafa's friend in Istanbul, Damascus, and Beirut. But Naum's greatest advantage was the concurrence of his tenure with the most tranquil years of the last half-century of Ottoman history. [.] Naum served in Mount Lebanon. (Source: The Long Peace: Ottoman Lebanon, 1861-1920). Naum Pasha is of Arab Christian origin. Soon after beginning in the 'Hariciye Tahrirat Kalemi' and serving in various positions in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he was appointed as the governor of Cebel-i Lebanon (1892) with the rank of vizier. During the Second Constitutional Monarchy, he served as the Minister of Public Works for a short time (3-8 August 1908). He was sent to the Paris Embassy for the second time while he was under the Undersecretariat for Foreign Affairs. He died while he was in this post.; Abdürrahim Muhib Efendi, or, pasha, was the ex-ambassador of Paris between 1806-1811 before Naum Pasha.

The city of Nicaea was located near a large lake and fertile plain, which was the main reason of city's importance through the ages. Notable for its climate and geographical features, it was a socio-political and economic centre of the Bithynia. It has always been one of the most important cities in the region during the Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuks and Ottoman periods. Although the Roman Theatre is the most striking structure of the city, other architectural remains such as tombs, bridges, aqueducts, city walls and gates are still standing. The Roman theatre at Nicaea is located in the southwestern part of the city, close to the city walls and Lake Iznik (Ascania Limme). One of the most impressive archeological buildings in Anatolia, the theatre has been a frequent destination for western travellers for many years. The first scientific studies on the theatre were conducted in 1938 by A. M. Schneider in order to have a better idea of the substructures. The excavations revealed that the theatre was built on a Hellenistic stratum. Although it ceased to function as a theatre in the Late Roman Period (4th cent. AD), it was used for different purposes in the Byzantine and Ottoman periods.

I was fascinated when I first saw the Catalhoyuk map, a heritage of 'Anatolian Civilizations' which has survived 8,200 years of history, while at the same time I was greatly disappointed that such a unique map was neither known sufficiently enough nor introduced to the cartographic scholars. It was for this reason that about two years ago, I decided to conduct research into the matter. However, as I was already involved in two research projects entitled 'The History of Turkish Mapping in the Republican Era' and 'Historical Relief Maps, ' respectively, it was not possible to find time for the Catalhoyuk map. Once I had completed these studies, I started to carry out my study on 'Piri Reis Kitab-i Bahriye' (Piri Reis and His Book of the Sea) , which has been continiuing for a few years, Thus, my study of the Catalhoyuk map had been delayed once again. When I saw the map once again, in early 1999, I decided that I could not wait any longer. An investigation of a Roman road-station in its archaeological and geographical context that provides a new perspective on the historical landscape of southern Anatolia. This study is based on fieldwork carried out during the 1990s in southwest Turkey in the modern vilayets of Burdur and Antalya, and it focuses on the settlements associated with a Roman mansio located in the Döseme Bogazi, the pass that linked Pisidia with the coastal region of Pamphylia. The course of the road and the structures that emerged along it were defined not by the evolution of Pisidia's Hellenized indigenous culture but by the priorities of Roman rule, especially during late antiquity. Furthermore, the study of the road where the mansio was located raises fundamental questions about the role played by this mountain pass in the movement of people and animals between the lowlands and highlands of South-west Anatolia.

Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) First and only edition of this rare book on the history of Egyptian kings (pharaohs) by an Ottoman statesman and one of the most famous painting collectors in history. Halil Serif was educated in France, where his studies have primarily been on the realm of political science. Following his return to Egypt, he became for a brief period the second secretary of Abbas Pasha, the governor (1848-1854), and a member of the Council of Justice (Ahkam-i Misriye). Thereafter, he became the Director of the Office of Translation and of the Bureau of Correspondence within the body of Egyptian foreign affairs administration for five years -approximately between 1850 and 1855. Said Pasha (1854-1863), the successor of Abbas as governor of Egypt, then appointed Halil Serif as the commissioner in charge of Egyptian exhibits sent to Paris for the international exposition of 1855. Also known for his own great painting collection, Halil Serif must have stayed in Paris for about a year. He was still there in February and March, 1856, when the Congress of Paris had met to institute peace after the Crimean War. The Ottoman Empire was represented at that Congress by its Grand Vizier, Mehmed Emin Ali Pasha. While Halil Bey was in St. Petersburg, an article on Egyptian history which he had written appeared in Mecmua-i Fünun (the journal of the newly founded Cemiyet-i Ilmiye-i Osmaniye), which began its publication in 1862. 'Kudema-i mülûk-i Misriye Tarihi' (History of the Ancient Egyptian Kings) was published serially in volumes of 1 and 2. Later on, the articles were published by Ebüzziya's press in the form of a book. These articles also brought Halil Bey to the notice of Europeans. First and only edition of this extremely rare first separate Roman history (as well as the Byzantine history) in the Ottoman/Turkish literature. Ahmed Cevdet Pasha had already dealt briefly in Roman and Byzantine history as part of an outline of ancient and medieval European history (Avrupa'nin Ahval-i Sabika ve Lahikasi): Tarih-i Cevdet (first edition) vol. 6 (Istanbul 1294 AH /1877). The Roman history until Constantine the Great is limited to the first ten pages of this account, the remainder deals with Byzantine history. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Ahmed Cevdet Pasha was an Ottoman scholar, intellectual, bureaucrat, administrator, historian, and a prominent figure during the Tanzimat reforms of the Ottoman Empire. He was the head of the Mecelle commission that codified Islamic law for the first time in response to the Westernization of law. He is often regarded as a pioneer in the codification of civil law based on the European legal system. The Mecelle remained intact in several modern Arab states in the early and mid-20th century. In addition to Turkish, he was proficient in Arabic, Persian, French, and Bulgarian languages. He wrote numerous books on history, law, grammar, linguistics, logic, and astronomy. Centred in the large curve of the Halys, which they called the Marasantiya, they had loose frontiers, their longest extending from the Aegean to the other side of the Euphrates (Hittite Mala) and from the Pontic Mountains to the Mediterranean and the source of the Orontes River. The rock-reliefs, which are still spread all around the country, show the routes by which their armies campaigned. The artifacts of their unsophisticated material culture are among the most interesting items of many museums. In Turkey, even if the traveller may not have the chance to visit their capital Hattusa, the name of the Hittites greets him at every turn.". The aim of this book is to present a brief overview of archaeological and historical research on Caria from the very first signs of occupation in the Prehistoric times to the Late Ottoman period. The region occupied by ancient Caria can roughly be described as the southwestern portion of the Anatolian peninsula South of the Menderes Valley and west of the Dalaman River. The Carians are mentioned several times in the 2nd millennium BCE for having supported the fight of Anatolian nations against the Hittite invaders and later to have fought beside the Hittite kings against the Egyptian forces. They were also counted amongst the legendary Sea People, traveling the Mediterranean, spreading destruction on their path and bringing down some of the most powerful empires of the Late Bronze Age. Later, Homer mentions them in the list of allies who came and supported Troy against the Greeks, emphasizing the wealth of the Carians, who "came to fight decked like a girl with gold".

"Carl Gustaf Löwenhielm (1790-1838) served as Sweden's ambassador to the Sublime Port between 1824 and 1827. Traveling throughout the Ottoman Empire, he produced about 250 paintings, covering a wide range of themes. This book presents about half of Löwenhielm's pictures, some selected from five sketch books, which are kept in the Uppsala University Library. Paintings kept in the Stockholm Museum of Fine Arts as well as in private collection are also included. Each picture is accompanied with written comments highlighting their documentary as well as artistic value.
