‎K.V. Soundara Rajan‎

‎The Ellora Monoliths: Rashtrakuta Architecture in the Deccan [Hardcover]‎

‎This book seeks to lift into focus the monolithic legacy of the Rashtrakutas at Ellora, from out of the reason that these monoliths perhaps are best suited to understand and reconstruct the artistic, architectural, traditional, religious and cult interactions and growth-spectra that had taken place in the period from the 8th to the 10th century A.D., very much more eloquently than the study of the cave temple types. Without the stabilizing role of these monoliths, in the over view of the status of temple art, in that period which the Rashtrakutas adorned by their vigorous patronage, eclecticism and multi-pronged political thrusts all over India in their heyday, the cave-art syndrome would tend to cloy even under the best circumstances, as something repetitive, potteries and commandeered which surely it was not. The book deals with the five monoliths at Ellora, in their own historical architectural, iconographic-religious perspectives, and elucidates how they were greatly diversified and pregnant with rich potential for the reconstruction of the are situation; and it compares them also with their compeer monoliths elsewhere in South India, in the same ilk, as in the Pallava and Pandya zones of the past. The chief aim of the book is to give a satisfactory formal picture of these monoliths and to vest them with the credit of being land-marks in the arche-types they sought to represent. Profusely illustrated and with a helpful set of charts and glossary, it is designed to cover a felt need in art studies at Ellora. About The Author:- Dr. K. V. Soundra Rajan (b.1925) took his Post-graduate degree in Sanskrit with Epigraphy form Allahabad University, and was trained and selected in 1947 by Sir Mortimer Wheeler, then Director General, Archaeological Survery of India, as scholar, and by the U.P.S.C. as an officer in 1954. Seeing service in several capacities and varying responsibilities from Prehistory to Temple Survey, he retired recently as Additional Director General in the Survey. Widely traveled in the East and West (where he taught at Chicago and Los Angeles Universities) he has ten books to his credit so far on various aspects of history, art and archaeology. President of the Indian Society for Prehistoric and Quaternary Research, Vice President of the Indian Archaeological Society, and President-elect of the Epigraphically Society of India, besides being associated with several learned bodies, and a senior research fellow of the Indian Council of Historical Research, his wide and versatile interests had earned him a reputable place among the senior archaeologists and art historians, alike of India as abroad, as an ardent scholar, writer and speaker. ‎Ancient Bundelkhand [Hardcover]‎

‎The book is a beautiful narrative of bygone Bundelkhand and verily brings it alive. Based entirely on archaeological remains and epigraphic records of the region, it is an authentic as well as analytical account of Indian’s heartland. It defines Bundelkhand tracing the origin of its name and fixing its frontiers in historical perspective. Its social and political formations have been presented with as much precisions as permitted by the sources, documenting in the process the details of interaction between the Little and Great Traditions. Conceived around the core-theme of Religion, the narrative nowhere separates from contemporary political or social structure and economic life or artistic expression. Sources so far unutilised have been utilises and sites so far unnoticed have been noticed. Incorporating a lot that is worth-recording and remembering about Ancient and Early-Medieval Bundelkhand, the book attempts to cover a period of more than three millennia from the dawn of civilization to the downfall of the Candellas in the fourteenth century A.D. with as many details and as much analysis as can be reasonably accommodated, maintaining the unity of scheme and impression. ‎John William Kaye‎

‎A History of the Great Revolt Volume 3 Vols. Set [Hardcover] Volume 3 Vols. Set‎

‎The saga of 1857 revolt, the First War of Independence is written with painstaking care, and much toil and tears. It is a historian’s account of chain of events and their cascading effects, baring the truth lying buried deep under the official positions and unofficial assertions. Recounting the events, the author even risked stirring up of controversy. John William Kaye had mountain of important papers in his possession related to Sepoy War, and to add, promised of further assistance from the surviving actors in the hot scene. The story of the Indian Rebellion of 1857 is, perhaps, the most signal illustration of our great national character ever yet recorded in the annals of our country. It was a vehement and inordinate self-assertion of the Englishman that produced the conflagration, it was the same vehement self-assertion of Indian people showed in the First War of Independence, the Indians cherish even to the date. It is an engrossing and heart-throbbing narration-a must read for the present day generation of Indians. ‎Land Transfers: a Case Study [Hardcover]‎

‎Over the years, and specifically since the enactment of land ceiling laws in a number of States in the country in the 1950s, agricultural land has changed hands in a manner that needs a searching enquiry not only for academic purpose but the planners and rural development agencies as well. Land transfer is of utmost significance as it offers vital clues to the emerging agrarian structure. Land alienation is nor only uprooting hundreds of thousands of small farmers but also adding to the population explosion in the urban areas which are already tottering under the weight of too much population. What are the factors behind land alienation? Which classes are losing land and which classes are gaining it? Why is landlessness on the increase? Is it due to immiserisation or has the diversification of the economic abetted the process. All these and other questions have been analysed in this empiricial study in the context of dynamics of new agricultural technology in a backward state like U.P. with its marked regional diversities. About The Author:- Dr. Kripa Shankar, obtained his D.Phil, degree from University of Allahabad and has been an activist in the Kisan movement. He continued with his academic pursuits, doing empirical studies on rural poverty, development and growth process. ‎Sven Hedin Foreword By K. Vatsyayana‎

‎Trans Himalaya Discoveries and Adventures in Tibet Volume 3 Vols. Set [Hardcover] Volume 3 Vols. Set‎

‎"My long journey backwards and forward over the Trans-Himalaya cannot be regarded as more that a cursory and defective reconnaissance of a country hitherto unknown. It is easier to go to Lhasa with a force armed to the teeth, and shoot down the Tibetans like pheasants if they stand in the way, than to cross Tibet in all direction for two long years with four governments and all the authorities of the land as opponents, twelve poor Ladakis as companions, and not a single man as escort. It is no merit of mine that I was long able to maintain a position which from the first seemed untenable. The same lucky star looked down, as often before, on my lonely course through vast Asia, since I first took up my pilgrim staff. “Go, then, out into the world thou ringing and sonorous name for one of the world’s mightiest mountain systems, and find thy way into geograp hical text-books and remind children in the schools of the snow-crowned summits on the Roof of the World, among which the monsoon storms have sung their deafening chorus since the beginning. As long as I live, my proudest memories-like royal eagles, will soar round the cold desolate crags of the Trans-Himalaya.” About The Author:- Sven Hedin’s journey through the Himalayas was on of the most hazardous but at the same time most fascinating exploration of his time. His three-volume reportage of the journey remains a classic of travel writing to this day. Besides writing, Hedin had meticulously drawn pictures of what he saw and encountered during his journey to Tibet, which again are classic works of art. This publication contains the entire travelogue of Hedin. With an entourage of helpers, Hedin set out to his destination-Lhasa. He began interestingly, from India. From Simla to Leh to Lhasa the caravan journeyed through the inhospitable Himalayan track and reached the destinations in to Nepal, the sight to picturesque Mansarovar, the holy Lamas in caves and monasteries, the search for the sources of Indus and Brahmaputra- the mosaic is arrestingly charming. A gem of a travelogue, Trans-Himalaya is sheer delight to read, and contains a mine of information.
