Thinking about Space, The potential of surface survey and contextual archaeology in the definition of space in Roman times.
Paperback, X 255 p., 5 colour ill., 210 x 295 mm, Languages: English. fine condition !!. ISBN 9782503513577. The incorporation of new provinces in the Roman Empire, both in the East and the West, coincides with marked changes in urban infrastructure and layout, and in rural settlement patterns, as is attested by numerous excavations and surveys. While scholars agree on the quantitative and qualitative transformation of cities and their territories, such as an increase in the number of monumental buildings and rural sites, a significantly higher degree of urbanization, a more sophisticated lifestyle etc., little research has been devoted to the ways in which these structures and sites, and their internal components, were organized spatially. The eleven papers presented in this volume result from workshops organized by the international, interdisciplinary ROCT-network (Roman Crafts and Trade). From a heterogeneous chronological and geographical background, the peer-reviewed collection of papers focuses on one central issue: the use of space in the Roman world. Space, on all sorts of levels, shapes human life, now as in the past. The edited volume contrasts two dimensions of space: the macro-scale at regional level and the micro-scale at local level. Moreover, the selected papers are written against a variety of methodological backgrounds and practices, including excavation and surveying strategies, contextual analysis and material culture studies. The variety of content, approaches and interpretation results from the conscious deliberation that this is the only possible way to think about space in the Roman world. The contributions cover the Roman world with its provinces, throughout the long period in history which can be considered Roman in each of the study areas.Frank Vermeulen is professor of Roman archaeology and of archaeological method at Ghent University. His research interests cover settlement history and landscape development in the western Mediterranean during Antiquity. Hannelore Vanhaverbeke is a Postdoctoral Fellow of the Research Foundation - Flanders (FWO-Belgium); she is the field director of the annual rural surveys near Sagalassos and teaches at the Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium). Jeroen Poblome is a research professor at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. He studies artisanal production organization and exchange patterns and mechanisms in the ancient eastern Mediterranean, with fieldwork in Boeotia, Pisidia and Cilicia.

VONDSTEN UIT VUUR. ROMEINS GRAFVELD MET NEDERZETTINGSSPOREN AAN DE HOGE DIJKEN IN JABBEKE.
Paperback, 128p, throughout colour illustrations, 27x21cm., new. ISBN 9789076297439.

Viking Archaeology in Iceland, Mosfell Archaeological Project.
Paperback, XXVI 256 pages ., 83 b/w ill. 10 colour ill. 17 maps, 23 graphs, 28 b/w tables, 216 x 280 mm, Languages: English. ISBN 9782503544007. The Viking North Atlantic differs significantly from the popular image of violent raids and destruction characterizing the Viking Age in Northern Europe. In Iceland, Scandinavian seafarers discovered and settled a large uninhabited island. In order to survive and succeed, they adapted lifestyles and social strategies to a new environment. The result was a new society, the Icelandic Free State. This volume examines the Viking Age in Iceland through the discoveries and excavations of the Mosfell Archaeological Project (MAP) in Iceland?s Mosfell Valley. Directed by Professor Jesse Byock with Field Director Davide Zori, MAP brings together scholars and researchers from Iceland, Britain, Canada, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Germany, and the United States. The Project incorporates the disciplines of archaeology, history, saga studies, osteology, zoology, paleobotany, genetics, isotope studies, place-names studies, environmental science, and historical architecture. The decade-long research of MAP has led to the discovery of an exceptionally well-preserved Viking chieftain?s farmstead, including a longhouse, a pagan cremation site, a conversion-era stave church, and a Christian graveyard. The research results presented here tell the story of how the Mosfell Valley developed from a ninth-century settlement of Norse seafarers into a powerful Icelandic chieftaincy of the Viking Age.

Hardcover. 188 p., 156 x 234 mm, Languages: French, Fine copy. Including an index. ISBN 9782503511740.

Atlas of the Assyrian Pottery of the Iron Age
Paperback, VI 197 p., 73 b/w ill. 2 colour ill., 210 x 295 mm, 2010. ISBN 9782503532882. Assyrian pottery of the Iron Age is a very special topic in Near Eastern archaeology: it is widely diffused, related to the expansion of the first real "empire" in Western Asia, and it is well characterized as far as its typology, manufacturing and decoration are concerned. Especially from the VIII cent. BC, the Assyrian policy of settlement in the conquered regions led to a capillary occupation of most of the available landscapes in the provinces: the result is a large amount of excavations with materials dating to this period. The Atlas aims to develop a global typology that can be applied to the whole Assyrian repertory, in order to highlight the main types and to define their precise chronology and diffusion in the various regions conquered by Assyrians.

Amuq-Terrakotten. Untersuchungen zu den Terrakotta-Figuren des 2. und 1. Jahrtausends v.
Paperback, VI 469 p., 639 b/w ill., 210 x 295 mm, 2010. New. ISBN 9782503535272. This volume presents 569 objects of baked clay from three sites in the Amuq Plain (southern Turkey). They were excavated in the 1930ies by a team from the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago, directed by Robert J. Braidwood. Most of them were never published before. Their dates range from the late 3rd millennium BC until the Hellenistic period. The terra-cottas are presented in a catalogue, but also set in a frame of their cultural and artistic background. This book is thus not only a publication of material from the Amuq excavations, but also a history of 2nd and 1st millennium terra-cotta production in ancient Syria. The study of these figurines highlights the extent and limitations of iconographic influences from abroad and proves the continuity of images and beliefs across the borders of cultural periods.

Hardcover. V 295 p., 165 x 240 mm, Languages: French, Including an index. Fine copy. ISBN 9782902685684.

Administrative Documents from Tell Beydar (Seasons 1993-1995)
Hardcover. 287 p., 93 bl/w ills. 145 drawings, 210 x 295 mm, Languages: English, Including an index. Fine copy. ISBN 9782503505398. Although only 147 tablets have been discovered at Beydar, and although almost all the tablets contain administrative texts, they are nevertheless of great importance for our understanding of the culture and the society of Northern Jazirah in the second half of the third millenium B.C. Until the discovery of tablets at Beydar, Northern Syria had not yielded any tablets dating to the Early Dynastic period. For the first time we get an idea not only of the language, the calender, the metrology and the pantheon of Northern Syria, but also of its political and cultic institutions. These documents are now published in this second issue in the Subartu-Series. It contains chapters on linguistics, historical evaluation, technical aspects, geography, sign lists, metrology, calendars, personal names, terminology, groups of documents, transliterations.

Early Prehistory of Mesopotamia
Hardcover. 250 p., ill., 210 x 295 mm, Languages: English, Including an index. Fine copy. ISBN 9782503507293. The early prehistory of Mesopotamia provides a uniquely rich and significant contribution to the study of the human past. Within the geographic bounds of Mesopotamia many major developments took place. Early forms of hominid, probably Homo erectus and definitely Neandertal, passed countless millennia here, to be succeeded by anatomically modern humans. After the end of the last Ice Age the pace of human activity increased. Settled communities appeared for the first time, followed by the extensive and intensive exploitation and domestication of plants and animals. By 4,500 bc settled human communities were practising a full spectrum of agricultural techniques, cultivating a range of crops and husbanding domesticated animals for a variety of purposes, while maintaining an involvement in traditional hunting strategies. Firmly based on site by site examination, this volume contains detailed analyses of all evidence relevant to these and other major concerns of the early Mesopotamian past.

Hardcover. 358 p., ills., 210 x 295 mm, Languages: French, Including an index. Fine copy. ISBN 9782503510637. At the beginning of the nineties, after many years of intensive archaeological research in Northern Mesopotamia, partially enhanced by the salvage operations connected with the construction of dams on the Habur and the Euphrates, it was important to start to evaluate the results of these works in a global and historical perspective. This book, containing almost thirty articles, with a complete bibliography and illustrations, represents the first effort of synthesis of the research programs developed in these last years in Northern Syria, and it offers an interesting view on the historical debate still going on.

Cultures locales du Moyen-Euphrate. Modeles et evenements (IIe-Ier millenaires av. J.-C.)
Hardcover. 200 p., 12 b/w ill., 210 x 295 mm, Languages: French, Including an index. Fine copy. ISBN 9782503991160. The analysis of the organization of local societies in the Middle Euphrates and the Northern Mesopotamia area - and, at the same time, of the historical models used to describe them - shows that during the late Bronze and Iron Ages these regions are not to be considered settled only by semi-nomadic Aramaic tribes or by their enemy, the Assyrians. The stele found in 1948 in Tell Ashara - Terqa, dated from the beginning of the Ninth century BC, is the best evidence of the existence and of the survival of an ancient urban culture. A study of this document enlightens the main characters of the political structure of the local society, integrating not only the sedentary population, but also its semi-nomadic component, and their relationship with the Assyrian imperial power.

Tell Beydar, The 1995 to 1999 Seasons of Excavations.
softcover. 2 vol., 620 p., 44 colour ill., 210 x 297 mm, Languages: English. ISBN 9782503991177. This volume is the progress report of three further seasons of excavations at Tell Beydar (Syria, 1995-1997). The excavations at the central acropolis of the the IIIrd Millennium tell revealed most important Early Jezirah III and IV official buildings, including an official block (EJ III) and a series of temples (EJ III-IV). Deep soundings (fields G and I) brought much informations about the early levels of the Kranzhugel. The E field granary is fully published and adds considerable knowledge about the debated question of storage facilities in Upper Mesopotamia. The discovery of several levels of inner fortification walls proved the strategical importance of this town in the third Millennium. A considerable amount of stratified evidence is presented and helped in setting up the periodization of this urban centre, the ancient name of which was probably Nabada. Evidence from the hellenistic levels from the Upper Town enlightens the stratigraphy of this poorly known period in Upper Mesopotamia. Subartu IX includes a preliminary report of excavations at Beydar III, a Late Chalcolithic settlement.

Tell Boueid II. A Late Neolithic Village on the Middle Khabur (Syria)
softcover . 220 pages ., 93 b/w ill., 210 x 295 mm, Languages: English, Including an index. Fine copy. ISBN 9782503513447. Tell Boueid II is one of many sites submerged by the completion of the Middle Khabur dam, northeastern Syria. Salvage excavations by Antoine Suleiman (DGAM) in 1997 and 1998 exposed a small (about 0.12 ha) settlement dated on the basis of the ceramics to the Late Neolithic period. More specifically, comparisons with Tell Sabi Abyad and Tell Chagar Bazar suggest a date at the end of the Pre-Halaf era and the beginning of the Transitional stage between pre-Halaf and Early Halaf. During this crucial period, which remains poorly understood in Syria and northern Mesopotamia, various regional communities in Syria and northern Mesopotamia exhibit an increasingly strong cultural unity. In the report, archaeologists and specialists present the analyses of some aspects of the excavations: the architecture, the small finds, the Late Neolithic ceramics, the faunal remains, the obsidian, two clay sealings and the contents of two Late Chalcolithic pits. The ceramics show strong relationships with the so-called Hassuna and Samarra traditions known from Iraq. The obsidian tools, too, show affinities with the Samarra tradition but also with local, Syrian traditions. Of particular significance are two sealings with stamp seal impressions, which are similar to sealings recently excavated at Tell Sabi Abyad. In a concluding chapter the authors bring together their viewpoints in a joint discussion of Tell Boueid II.

Third Millenium Cuneiform Texts from Tell Beydar (Seasons 1996-2002)
Hardcover. XII 132 p., 210 x 295 mm, Languages: English, Including an index. Fine copy. ISBN 9782503515427. With this volume the epigraphical team of Tell Beydar (Syria) continues the publication of the Early Dynastic cuneiform texts found during the Euro-Syrian excavations in 1996-2002. The tablets from Tell Beydar constitute the most important find of Presargonic texts from Northern Mesopotamia. A first volume with the edition of the tablets from seasons 1993-1995 appeared in 1996 in the same series (Subartu II). The 69 new texts include administrative documents, a considerable number of inscribed and sealed bullae and a Sumerian literary text. Indexes and additions to Subartu II close this part. Several studies, mostly by authors of the volume, concentrate on various aspects of the new texts: the archaeological context (M. Lebeau); sheep husbandry at Beydar; the bullae and their administrative use; inscribed seals and sealings on the bullae (G. Jans); women in the Beydar texts; the Sumerian literary text; Nabada/Tell Beydar in its regional setting (with J. Ur); and an overview of the Tell Beydar texts in Arabic by F. Ismail. These studies integrate the new written sources into the wider context of the history and culture of Northern Mesopotamia in the Third Millennium B.C.

Atlas of PreClassical Upper Mesopotamia (APUM), including a Supplement to "The Archaeology of Upper Mesopotamia. An Analytical Bibliography for the Pre-Classical Periods"and an Analytical Repertory of Archaeological Excavations.
Hardcover. X 420 p., 60 colour ill., one Cd-Rom, 210 x 295 mm, Languages: English, Including an index. Fine copy. ISBN 9782503991207. Due to an important number of salvage projects and rescue excavations in Northern Syria, Southern Turkey and Northern Iraq, the archaeological records documenting Upper Mesopotamia drastically increased these last decades. More than 300 regular or rescue preclassical excavations have been registered in Upper Mesopotamia so far. This Atlas of Preclassical Upper Mesopotamia is the result of a systematic examination of the published evidence. More than 100 collaborators have contributed to set up an analytical repertory, summing up the available data through a standardized file. This repertory enumerates each site and reports topography, dimensions of the settlement, geographical location, data on the excavations, periods of occupation (A to Z), environmental and archaeometrical studies, material culture (72 entries), 14C samplings and bibliography. All these ancient settlements are carefully located in new 4-colour maps. Subartu XI includes an updated bibliography, to be considered as the Supplement to Subartu I.

Tell Beydar, the 2000-2002 Seasons of Excavations, the 2003-2004 Seasons of Architectural Restoration.
softcover. VI 309 p., 359 b/w ill., 210 x 295 mm, Languages: English, French, Including an index. Fine copy. ISBN 9782503518121. The third volume about the Euro-Syrian excavations at Tell Beydar constitutes the progress report of the 2000 to 2002 seasons of excavations and the 2003 - 2004 (springtime) seasons of architectural restoration. The central acropolis is currently almost completely uncovered, revealing the Early Jezirah IIIb administrative centre of the ancient city of Nabada. Immediately S of the acropolis, three temples (B, C and D), workshops and storerooms are located in a specific quarter. Soundings have been initiated below the floors of the EJ IIIb Palace and Temple A, reaching official architecture from the EJ IIIa period. B Field has been extended, providing more private houses. Private houses were discovered as well in Field Q. A new area of excavations (P) is scheduled to survey the E part of the city. W of Temple C, a new area of excavations (M/O) reaches a quarter of the city seemingly devoted to handicraft and economical purposes. The hellenistic building of Area A provides clues about architecture, pottery and stratigraphy of a poorly documented period in Upper Mesopotamia. In 2003 a large programme of architectural restoration has been launched, having as main priority the preservation of the EJ IIIb official buildings of the central acropolis. The methods of consolidation/restoration/reconstruction are detailed in the volume. The hellenistic building of Area A has been restored as well.

espaces syro-mesopotamiens. Dimensions de l'experience humaine au Proche-Orient ancien, Volume d'hommage offert a Jean-Claude Margueron
Hardcover. XXXII 548 p., 210 x 295 mm, Languages: French, English, Including an index. Fine copy. ISBN 9782503520230.

Preliminary Reports on Excavation Campaigns and Study Season
Hardcover. VI 257 p., 244 b/w ill., 210 x 295 mm, Languages: English, French, Including an index. Fine copy. ISBN 9782503522913. This collective work presents the preliminary results of excavations undertaken by the Canadian archaeological mission to Tell ?Acharneh, Syria in 1998, 1999, and 2002, as well as the results of a study season of excavated materials carried out in the Hama Museum in 2004. Field reports on each annual campaign, prepared by the director of the mission, describe the architectural remains according to their chronological and stratigraphic position at the site. Those reports are completed with specialized studies, written by different experts, of various categories of artifacts recovered over the course of excavations, such as pottery, coins and chipped stone artifacts. The archaeological studies are preceded by articles pertaining to epigraphic sources which make reference to Tunip, a city which is frequently documented in ancient texts and which corresponds most probably to the site of Tell ?Acharneh. Historical documents of the Middle Ages, during which time Tell ?Acharneh became designated by the toponym Tal Ibn Macher, are also discussed in this volume.

Glanzvolle Silhouetten Meisterwerke archaischer Toreutik im Badischen Landesmuseum Karlsruhe
bound, hardcover with dusjacket 228 Seiten, uber 100 Abb., vier Beilagen, Format 33 x 33 cm, 1. Auflage 2014. ISBN 9783898707954.
