GREEK SCULPTURE IN THE ART MUSEUM, PRINCETON UNIVERSITY Greek Originals, Roman Copies and Variants
Faint crease to 1 corner of wraps. ; From its foundation in 1888, The Art Museum, Princeton University, has amassed an impressive collection of ancient Greek sculpture, which, along with the museum's other collections of ancient art, has long played an integral role in the training of art historians and archaeologists. This book is a comprehensive catalog of The Art Museum's ancient Greek sculpture. Here a team of scholars headed by Brunilde Ridgway thoroughly documents each of the forty pieces that constitute this broad and diverse collection. The collection includes gravestones, votive reliefs, and portraits of poets, playwrights, and philosophers, as well as representations of gods and goddesses, satyrs, centaurs, nymphs, and sphinxes. The resulting catalog will be a valuable tool to anyone wishing to learn about the world of ancient Greece. The catalog covers both original works of Greek stone sculpture as well as Roman sculptures that copy or owe their inspiration to earlier Greek works. Photographs of each piece are accompanied by information on dating, provenance, material, dimensions, and condition and by a detailed description and an analysis placing the piece in its artistic and historical contexts. ; 10.9 X 8.3 X 0.5 inches; 131 pages

A CATALOG OF IDENTIFIABLE FIGURE PAINTERS OF ANCIENT POMPEII, HERCULANEUM, AND STABIAE
Old price sticker to ffep. Small tear to front panel of DJ with a bit of loss. ; How did figure painting fit into the economic and artistic life of Pompeii? Did the best painters work in conjunction with one another? Did they paint only the important pictures in the best rooms and, if so, who painted the rest? Were the best houses the showplaces for these painters' work? If not, what was the function of these decorations in Pompeian life? L. Richardson, jr, has had a long and distinguished career writing about Roman art and architecture, particularly that of the companion town of Pompeii and its environs. In this newest work, he attributes many of the surviving wall decorations to particular painters. It is a catalog in the true sense, grouping the pictures by style and then by painter. Richardson describes the salient characteristics of a painter's work, and then inventories the pictures he attributes to that painter, together with cross-references to other catalogs and sources of good reproductions. ; 190 pages

POMPEII
Light edgewear to extremities. ; 160pp, nicely illustrated. Since its discovery in the middle of the eighteenth century, Pompeii has aroused the interest of scholars and laypeople alike. The thrill of finding the ancient city--buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD--was heightened by the rich history of this Roman town and her people. When the ancient sculptures, decorations, and buildings of Pompeii first came to light, they were eagerly compared with then-contemporary knowledge of classical antiquity, and still today are immensely important in understanding ancient Roman civilization. This comprehensive guide features an insightful history of Pompeii along with beautiful photographs of the ruins, frescoes, and art objects of the city. Pompeii is toured via three itineraries: from Porta Marina to the House of Ceii; from Via dell'Abbondanza to Porta Nocera; and from the House of Julius Polibius to the Villa of the Mysteries. A thematic index and an index of places and buildings are also included, making this a useful guide for travelers, students, scholars, and anyone else with an interest in this fascinating site. ; Art Guide Itineraries; Photographs; 160 pages

POMPEII An Architectural History
Very minor shelfwear to book. DJ has chipping and minor edgewear. ; Excavations at Popeii have been going on for more than two centuires, since 1748, and discoveries there have regularly produced new and important information about ancient Roman life. The site holds a rich concentration of municipal buildings, houses of every size and condition, villas, and tombs. Now in paperback, the first book of this century written in English devoted to Pompeian architecture and urban development tells the story of the city and its buildings. With text and illustrations, L. Richardson, jr portrays Pompeii in context, as a keystone in the architectural history of antiquity. Pompeii's life was comparatively short. From its meteoric rise as a seaport and shipbuilding center during the First Punic War until its abrupt destruction with the eruption of Vesuvius in A. D. 79, the city passed through four major building periods. After a general introduction to Pompeii's history and geography, the book proceeds through each period, discussing its public buildings, private buildings, and tombs. Each building is described and placed according to its importance in the development of its particular architectural form. Richardson offers new dates and arrives at new conclusions about the development of such important features as the city plan, fortifications, and the atrium/peristyle house. Fifty ground plans and twenty-five photographs illustrate the text. ; 10.5 x 1.5 x 8 Inches; 480 pages; Excavations at Pompeii have been going on for more than two centuires, since 1748, and discoveries there have regularly produced new and important information about ancient Roman life. ARTFUL CRAFTS Ancient Greek Silverware and Pottery
Some pencil notes and marginalia (Jenifer Neils). Some edgewear with laminate lifting along lower edge of rear wrap. Faint creasing. ; This book challenges the widely held view that Greek pottery vases were objects of great value in antiquity, commissioned by rich patrons from the greatest artists of the day. Instead, they are shown to have been simply low cost versions of tableware originally made in silver and gold. Vickers and Gill demonstrates how Greek pottery first came to be regarded as a high value commodity in the eighteenth century thanks to clever, if not fraudulent, sales techniques. They explore the ways in which work in gold and silver influenced painted pottery, and examine the primary sources, both literary and epigraphic, to find what materials the ancients did consider to be important. ; 0.58 x 9.67 x 7.46 Inches; 254 pages

PLACING THE GODS Sanctuaries and Sacred Space in Ancient Greece
Very light shelfwear. Faint bump to middle of front board. DJ has edgewear to top of spine. ; 288 pages; Cult activity played an extremely important role in ancient Greece--to the point, historians believe, that the placing of cult centers played a major part in establishing the whole concept of the city-state in archaic Greece. The essays in this collection critically examine the social and political importance of sanctuary placement, extending the analysis back to Mycenean Greece and on to Greece under Roman occupation. Revealing the complexity of relations between religion and politics in ancient Greece, these essays show how important tradition, gender relations, and cult identity were in creating and maintaining the religious mapping of the ancient Greek countryside.

ATTIC SCRIPT A Survey
Light bumping to 1 corner. Dustjacket has creasing along upper edge. ; Oxford Monographs on Classical Archaeology; 286 pages; This study places the inscriptions found on Athenian vases in the context of the early development of writing in Athens. Focusing on the period from the invention of the alphabet in the 8th century B.C. to the early 4th century B.C., when the local alphabet had been supplanted by the common Ionic script, the book presents inscriptions on stone, both public and private, scratched inscriptions on pottery, including the political ostraca, and some inscriptions on lead tablets. Although the vase inscriptions are brief, they number in the thousands and give an accurate picture of the art of writing and the state of literacy in the Classical Period.

Barletta, Barbara A.
THE ORIGINS OF THE GREEK ARCHITECTURAL ORDERS
Includes memorial guide for Barletta tipped in. Scholar's name to ffep (Jenifer Neils). Else book is fine. ; Much of our understanding of the origins and early development of the Greek architectural order is based on the writings of ancient authors, such as Virtruvius, and those of modern interpreters. Traditionally, the archaeological evidence has been viewed secondarily and often made to fit within a literary context, despite contradictions that occur. Barbara Barletta's study examines both forms of evidence in an effort to reconcile the two sources, as well as to offer a coherent reconstruction of the origins and early development of the Greek architectural orders. Beginning with the pre-canonical material, she demonstrates that the relatively late emergence of the Doric and Ionic orders arose from contributions of separate regions of the Greek world, rather than a single center. Barletta's reinterpretations of the evidence also assigns greater importance to the often overlooked contributions of Western Greece and the Cycladic Islands. ; 11.3 X 6.9 X 0.8 inches; 232 pages
