‎TEMPLE DECORATION AND CULTURAL IDENTITY IN THE ARCHAIC GREEK WORLD The Metopes of Selinus‎

‎Lower corners bumped. ; In this book, Clemente Marconi provides a new interpretation for the use of figural decoration in Greek temples of the Archaic period, through a study of the Archaic metopes of Selinus. The study of figural decoration on Greek temples has traditionally been identified with the broader study of architectural sculpture. At the same time, the original, articulated appearance of Archaic temples has been fragmented into a discussion of individual types. Marconi argues against both the typological approach and the tendency to investigate style and iconography as two aspects unrelated to the cultural and social background within which temple decoration operated. He explores the relation between style and function and examines the function of figures on temples within the cultural and social context of the communities for which these images were created. Critical to this exploration are the reintegration of the figures into the fabric of buildings, the space of Archaic sanctuaries and cities, and the ritual dimension that represented the context for the reception of the figural decoration of Greek temples. Marconi argues for a closer interaction between art history and disciplines such as semiotics, anthropology, and hermeneutics. ; 10.3 X 7.1 X 1.1 inches; 370 pages‎

‎BURIAL AND ANCIENT SOCIETY The Rise of the Greek City-State‎

‎Minor shelfwear. Inner hinges slightly strained. DJ spine is sunned and discolored. ; New Studies in Archaeology; 262 pages; This study of the changing relationships between burial rituals and social structure in Early Iron Age Greece will be required reading for all archaeologists working with burial evidence, in whatever period. This book differs from many topical studies of state formation in that unique and particular developments are given as much weight as those factors which are common to all early states. The ancient literary evidence and the relevant historical and anthropological comparisons are extensively drawn on in an attempt to explain the transition to the city-state, a development which was to have decisive effects for the subsequent development of European society.‎

‎THE ANCIENT MYSTERIES A Sourcebook of Sacred Texts‎

‎Zeus and the other gods of shining Olympus were in reality divine only by popular consent. Over the course of time Olympian luster diminished in favor of religious experiences more immediate to the concerns of people living in an increasingly cosmopolitan ancient world. These experiences were provided by the mysteries, religions that flourished particularly during the Hellenistic period and were secretly practiced by groups of adherents who decided, through personal choice, to be initiated into the profound realities of one deity or another. Unlike the official state religions, in which people were expected to make an outward show of allegiance to the local gods, the mysteries emphasized an inwardness and privacy of worship within a closed band of initiates. In this book, Marvin W. Meyer explores the sacrifices and prayers, the public celebrations and secret ceremonies, the theatrical performances and literary works, the gods and goddesses that were a part of the mystery religions of Greece in the seventh century B. C. To the Judaism and Christianity of the Roman world of the seventh century A. D.; 9.0 X 6.1 X 0.7 inches; 280 pages‎

‎THE AEGEAN FROM BRONZE AGE TO IRON AGE Continuity and Change between the Twelfth and Eighth Centuries Bc‎

‎Very faint shelfwear. ; Following Oliver Dickinson’s successful The Aegean Bronze Age, this textbook is a synthesis of the period between the collapse of the Bronze Age civilization in the thirteenth and twelfth centuries BC, and the rise of the Greek civilization in the eighth century BC. With chapter bibliographies, distribution maps and illustrations, Dickinson’s detailed examination of material and archaeological evidence argues that many characteristics of Ancient Greece developed in the Dark Ages. He also includes up-to-date coverage of the 'Homeric question'. This highly informative text focuses on: the reasons for the Bronze Age collapse which brought about the Dark Ages the processes that enabled Greece to emerge from the Dark Ages the degree of continuity from the Dark Ages to later times. ; 9.1 X 6.1 X 0.8 inches; 320 pages‎

‎FROM PERGAMON TO SPERLONGA Sculpture and Context‎

‎Minor bump to 1 corner. Else minor shelfwear to book and DJ. ; This volume brings together the work of leading scholars on two of the most important, yet puzzling, extant ensembles of Hellenistic Age sculpture: the Great Altar at Pergamon, with its Gigantomachy and scenes from the life of Telephos, and the Cave at Sperlonga in Italy, with its epic themes connected especially with the adventures of Odysseus. From Pergamon to Sperlonga has three aims: to update the scholarship on two important monuments of ancient art and architecture; to debate questions of iconography, authorship, and date; and to broaden the scope of discussion on these monuments beyond the boundaries of studies done in the past. In addition, the volume brings forward new ideas about how these two monuments are connected and discusses possible means by which stylistic influences were transmitted between them. ; Hellenistic Culture and Society; 9.1 X 6.0 X 1.2 inches; 449 pages‎

‎CLASSICAL ATHENS‎

‎This book is an introduction to the city of Athens, its history and its monuments. Its focus is 5th century Athens, the time of the city's heyday. The influence and importance of the city during this period reverberates through the centuries to the present day. As one of the dominant powers in the Mediterranean, Athens became the archetypal Classical city, and its monuments and temples stand as a testament to the glory of the city and its people. This book is structured as a progressive tour that physically takes the visitor through Athens, starting on the Acropolis, moving down the slopes through the Agora, through the city's narrow alleyways past houses, shops and sanctuaries, up to the city gates and beyond, to the Kerameikos cemetery, and finally to the city's harbour, Piraeus. As each chapter provides an interesting and informative introduction to the main areas of Classical Athens it can be used as a reference guide to areas of particular interest as well as a tour. This book can be used as a guide whilst walking the streets of Athens, or sitting at home in an armchair. ; A Place in History; 9.4 X 6.7 X 0.3 inches; 80 pages‎
