‎The author brings together the references to Sri Lanka (the island of Taprobane in Greek and Latin texts) for the purpose of examining their value as sources for the study of ancient Sri Lanka. One of the main reasons for Sri Lanka to maintain political, religious and commercial relationships with the external world was its role as a great emporium in the long distance maritime trade, a result of its central position in the Indian Ocean, its numerous bays and harbours facilitating both sea-borne and inland trade and its holdings of high export value goods such as precious stones, textiles and spices. Any study of this commerce has to be based on literary and epigraphical sources on the one hand and archaeological evidence on the other. The range of the volume is vast and includes not only a critical assessment of all the notices by classical writers on Taprobane (the author provides an up to date analysis), but also a chapter on Roman coins found in Sri Lanka and a chapter on alleged classical references in the interlinear inscriptions from Sri Lanka, which questions their genuineness. ‎Au coeur de la grande plaine indienne, entre Gange au sud et Brahmapoutre a l'est, le site de Mahasthan fut occupe des les derniers siecles du Ier millenaire av. J.-C., sans doute fonde au IVe s. Dans un environnement agricole riche, la cite connue sous le nom de Pundranagara - la ville de la tribu des Pundra - s'est developpee comme un poste avance de l'empire Maurya (fin IVe-IIe s. av. J.-C.) sur sa frontiere orientale : derriere ses hauts remparts, en bordure d'une puissante riviere sacree, la Karatoya, cette capitale regionale etait un passage de premiere importance dans les courants commerciaux, religieux et culurels entre la plaine gangetique, la baie du Bengale au sud, et les pays sub-himalayens au nord et a l'est (Nepal, Assam, Birmanie). Cette fonction prospere, qui culmine au tournant de l'ere comme le revele l'archeologie, se poursuit sur un rythme inegal jusqu'au XIIIe siecle, lorsque cette province orientale de l'Inde passe sous le controle des musulmans du Sultanat de Delhi. D'autres capitales sont alors etablies, les circuits d'echanges sont modifies, et le site n'est plus occupe que par episodes. Re-decouverte au XIXe s., la ville de Mahasthan a fait l'objet de nombreuses recherches archeologiques, en particulier dans les annees 1930 par l'Archaeological Survey of India, et dans les annees 1960, par le Departement d'Archeologie du Pakistan oriental. Depuis 1993, une equipe franco-bangladaise a entrepris une exploration plus systematique du site, dans le cadre d'un accord gouvernemental de cooperation franco-bangladaise. Ce sont les premiers resultats de cet ambitieux projet de recherche qui sont presentes ici, premier volume d'une serie appelee a se poursuivre. Une introduction historique eclairera un lecteur peu familier sur les grandes etapes du developpement de la region et sur ses relations avec les pays avoisinants ; une etude preliminaire sur l'environnement demontrera les riches potentialites agricoles d'un territoire bien arrose, aux terres fertiles. On rappellera aussi que Mahasthan n'est pas seulement une cite fortifiee, mais un ensemble d'etablissements disperses sur une vaste etendue, les relations entre le coeur du territoire et sa peripherie ayant varie au cours des siecles. Puis viendront les etudes plus proprement techniques : etablissement de la stratigraphie du site, elaboration d'une grille chronologique appuyee sur des analyses au radiocarbone, etudes sur la ceramique, les monnaies, les perles, etc. Chacune de ses analyses apporte une lumiere nouvelle sur l'histoire de cette ville oubliee, et la poursuite des recherches permettra, bientot, d'offrir une synthese renouvelee sur l'antiquite et le passe recent du Nord-Bengale, et du Bangladesh plus generalement. ‎Kosmas Indikopleustes (6th c.) was a merchant from Alexandria. He travelled nearly around the whole ancient world. Whether or not he came to India is still disputed. In the Christian topography he explains the structure of the world according to the literal interpretation of the bible. He learned to read and understand the bible by his Nestorian teacher Mar Aba, Katholikos of the eastern church, who was teaching the principles of the so-called Antioch school of exegesis. This work analyzes the structure and transmission of the whole text constantly referring to the manuscripts and gives for the first time a complete German translation with notes which serves to document the theses discussed. The so-called paragraphai which occur in the text are scholia and not narrative digressions. A new history of the transmission of the several editions which Kosmas produced of the Christian topography is given. Horst Schneider is working in the editorial department of Fontes Christiani at Munich. His research interests are Early Christian writers (200-600), the history of monasticism and the cultural transfer between Byzantium and the West (1204-1500). Kosmas Indikopleustes (6. Jh.) war ein am praktisch Leben interessierter Kaufmann aus Alexandria. Er bereiste fast die ganze antike Welt. Ob er tatsachlich auch nach Indien kam, ist in der Forschung umstritten. In der Christlichen Topographie erklart er den Aufbau der Welt mit Hilfe der wortlichen Bibelauslegung der syrisch-antiochenischen Bibelexegese, die er von seinem nestorianischen Lehrer Mar Aba, Katholikos der Kirche des Ostens, ubernahm. Die Arbeit analysiert die Struktur der uberlieferten Textmasse, wobei stets auch Bezug auf die Handschriften genommen wird. Bei den zahlreichen sogenannten Paragraphai, die sich im uberlieferten Haupttext befinden, handelt es sich nicht um vom Verfasser intendierte theologische Exkurse, sondern vielmehr um mehr oder weniger theologisch gehaltvolle Scholien, die aus buchtechnischen Grunden nicht am Rand plaziert werden konnten, und deshalb klar von den ebenfalls uberlieferten narrativen Exkursen zu trennen sind. Die verschiedenen Prologtexte werden im Zusammenhang der Editionsgeschichte der Christlichen Topographie neu interpretiert und eingeordnet. Die Untersuchung liefert zudem die erste deutsche kommentierte Gesamtubersetzung, die die uberlieferungsgeschichtlichen Thesen illustrieren soll, sowie eine Neuedition der griechischen Fragmente des sogenannten Indienlogos mit ausfuhrlichem Kommentar. Die Analysen und Ergebnisse dieser Arbeit sind als Prolegomena fur eine kritische Neuausgabe der Christlichen Topographie zu verstehen. Languages : German.‎

‎In dieser Publikation werden zwei Ritualszenen aus dem Chonstempel in Karnak, die kurz vor der Zeitenwende entstanden sind, untersucht. Beide Szenen zeigen den Konig, der die Figur der Gottin Maat jeweils einer Gruppe von 15 bzw. 11 Gottheiten uberreicht. Die fur thebanische Ritualszenen ungewohnlich langen Begleitinschriften (51 und 31 Zeilen) geben eine spate Version der ortlichen Kosmogonie wieder, in die sowohl lokale als auch uberregionale Gottheiten einbezogen sind. Wahrend Ausschnitte von einer der beiden Szenen schon langer bekannt sind (erste Veroffentlichung von Daressy 1884, uberarbeitete Abschrift von Sethe 1929), liegen in der vorliegenden Publikation jetzt erstmals Umzeichnungen der beiden Szenen vor. Das Kernstuck des Bandes ist eine neue Ubersetzung und ein ausfuhrlicher Kommentar dieser thebanischen Kosmogonie. Das eigentlich Besondere der Inschriften ist dabei die Zusammenstellung konventioneller Topoi mit singularen Textabschnitten, die einen Einblick in die ausserst kreative theologische Arbeit gewahren, die die Priester der griechisch-romischen Epoche geleistet haben. Sie verbanden altere Uberlieferungen mit neu entwickelten Vorstellungen, um den aktuellen Stand des theologischen Diskurses wiederzugeben. Eine Reihung ungewohnlicher Aussagen in einem der beiden Texte macht es schliesslich moglich, diesen mit einem spateren Bericht des Porphyrios (um 300 n. Chr.) in Verbindung zu setzen, was einen Einblick in die antike Agyptenrezeption ermoglicht. Languages : German.‎

‎Un ensemble de 269 figurines en terre cuite, mises au jour par la Mission archeologique egypto-polonaise au cours des annees 1985-1991 sur le site de Tell Atrib - l'ancienne Athribis - dans le Delta du Nil, constitue l'objet du present ouvrage. Le caractere unique de cet ensemble provient d'un contexte archeologique date, qui offre la possibilite de reexaminer la chronologie des terres cuites qui, jusqu'ici, reposait principalement sur des criteres stylistiques. Le materiel d'Athribis contribue a une meilleure connaissance de l'industrie coroplathique de l'Egypte greco-romaine. En effet, maintes pieces sont issues des ateliers locaux dont les vestiges ont ete mis au jour sur le site. Dans ce groupe figurent un certain nombre d'objets uniques, qui n'ont d'equivalent ni en Egypte, ni ailleurs. Inspires parfois d'?uvres majeures de la sculpture contemporaine ces objets enrichissent sensiblement nos connaissances en histoire de l'art. Le chapitre I, fonde sur un choix de sources ecrites et archeologiques, presente l'histoire de l'ancienne Athribis a partir de l'epoque pharaonique. Le chapitre II contient les donnees relatives a la technique de fabrication des figurines, a la lumiere notamment d'une etude des ateliers decouverts sur le site. Le chapitre III, qui se refere a de nombreuses figurines analogues et connues dans le monde hellenistique, propose une interpretation stylistique et thematique des motifs religieux et profanes qu'elles representent. L'etude de l'evolution stylistique et typologique des figurines athribites, traitee au chapitre IV, apporte des donnees de premiere importance pour la datation des objets de l'industrie coroplathique de l'Egypte greco-romaine. Plusieurs elements indiquent que le site a ete occupe par des soldats macedoniens a la fin du IVe siecle av. J.-C. Leur presence a certainement exerce une influence sur le repertoire thematique des terres cuites. Ce repertoire, qui s'enrichit au fil du temps, reflete mieux que n'importe quelle autre source les croyances et les m?urs des habitants de la cite. Un catalogue termine l'ouvrage. Les occupations recentes de la necropole, comme celle de l'epoque copte, ou des ermites peuplaient la montagne thebaine, ou celle de l'epoque moderne, n'ont meme jamais recu l'attention qu'elles meritent. ? Thebes aux 101 Portes ? constitue un etat de la question, une espece ? d'arret sur images ? , abordant par ailleurs la conservation et la restauration, devant preserver ce patrimoine pour les generations futures. Les auteurs puisent largement dans la riche documentation, en grande partie inedite, provenant des tombes d'Amenemope (TT 29) et de Sennefer (TT 96). ‎Als zweite Unternehmung der Grabungen des Comite des Fouilles Belges en Egypte im Tal El-Asasif (in der Endphase seit 1999 ein Projekt finanziert aus Mitteln der DFG) wurde seit 1971 das Grab TT 196 aus der 26.Dyn. freigelegt, bearbeitet, teilweise innen und im Oberbau restauriert bzw. konsolidiert. Die zweibandige Publikation bietet die Geschichte der Grabung, die detaillierte Beschreibung der Anlage mit ausfuhrlicher Dokumentation durch 17 zeichnerische Abbildungen, 12 Plane und 42 Tafeln mit Photos, eine vollstandige Wiedergabe aller Inschriften mit 170 Seiten hieroglyphischem Text sowie einen entsprechend mit 101 Tafeln mit Photos und Zeichnungen ausgestatteten Fundkatalog uber 549 Objekte. Die Keramik (ca 185 Gefasse) wird zusatzlich separat vorgestellt. Das System der Dekoration wird durch 41 Schlusselplane erschlossen, die bildlichen Darstellungen (Vignetten) durch weitere 27 Tafeln mit Umzeichnungen. Weiterhin sind enthalten diverse naturwissenschaftliche Beitrage als Anhange, eine Liste mit Angaben uber den Verbleib der Fundstucke sowie Indices (Namen, Titel, archaologische Stichworte). Die Architektur des Grabes stellt eine Art Idealversion eines Spatzeitgrabes (realisiert mit beschrankteren Mitteln (verglichen mit grosseren Grabern nebenan) dar. Die Inschriften enthalten eine der wichtigsten Versionen des sogenannten Stundenrituals, eine umfangreiche Ausgabe des Totenbuchs der 26.Dyn. und verschiedene Auszuge von Pyramidentexten. Von der originalen Grabausstattung blieben Reste eines Holzsarges, von Uschebtis, Kanopen, und eines Opferstanders erhalten. Der grosste Teil der Funde betrifft Nachbestattungen bis in die romische Zeit, aber auch Streufunde, die aus anderen Teilen der Nekropole nach TT 196 verschleppt wurden. Ein alteres Grab unter dem Treppenraum aus der Zweiten Zwischenzeit enthielt einen vergoldeten Holzsarg und eine vergoldete Kanopenkiste. Der Abraumschutt vom benachbarten Grab TT 192 des Cheruef, auf dem der Dritte Hof des Grabes TT 196 ruht, verbarg einen vollstandigen Frauensarg mit Mumie aus der 22.Dyn. An ihr wurde im Jahre 2000 eine Computertomographie in Luxor durchgefuhrt. Unter der Sudwestecke des Dritten Hofes wurde 1999 einer der Eingange zu einer Doppelgrabgruppe aus dem Mittleren Reich freigelegt. Diese wird separat publiziert werden. Languages : German.‎

Tell Sabi Abyad thus far remains the only archaeological site in the Near East where the shift from a Pre-Halaf to an Early Halaf cultural assemblage can be followed within a continuous, meticulously stratified sequence. This shift occured during a short-lived transitional stage, radiocarbon dated at 6100-5900 cal. BC, In terms of the ceramics, this transition is characterized by the gradual replacement of plain Coarse Ware by intricately painted Fine Wares, and by numerous innovations in ceramic technology, morphology and decorative style. More than merely a pottery report, the book offers a lively discussion of past and present views on the origins of the Halaf culture. It also places the excavated ceramics in the broader socio-economic and symbolic context of Late Neolithic societies in northern Syria. La storia inizia infatti dagli anni del pontificato di Innocenzo III: papa autoritario, di lucida visione teocratica e di vasti disegni politici, che proclama l'universalita della Chiesa e al tempo stesso bada a consolidare il suo potere temporale, fortificando i territori circostanti a Roma, estendendo l'autorita pontificia sulle regioni limitrofe, facendo insomma dello Stato della Chiesa uno stato agguerrito e capace di fronteggiare i pericoli e gli attacchi anche militari. Non meraviglia, in questo quadro ideologico e politico, che Innocenzo III sia anche il papa che mette mano ai piu grandi edifici della citta sacra, Roma, per rifarli e rammodernarli e in questo modo presentare l'immagine di una chiesa tradizionale, ma attuale e rinnovata. Tramite i cantieri innocenziani, Roma viene toccata da una potente ondata bizantineggiante, originata dal risalire degli artisti che erano stati attivi nei cantieri normanni di Palermo e Monreale, e che rimasti senza lavoro per la fine della potenza normanna in Sicilia e Italia meridionale vanno a cercarne la dove l'attivita e piu intensa, e quindi specialmente a Roma. Subito dopo pero le cose cambiano, e la cultura dell'Europa gotica comincia a premere anche alle porte della Citta per definizione piu tradizionalista di tutte. Nei decenni centrali del Duecento una vera e propria invasione di temi e iconografie rinnovate si verifica, negli edifici della citta che li hanno conservati e che sono stati riscoperti anche molto recentemente: il caso del grande ciclo ad affresco nel salone gotico dei Santi Quattro Coronati e emblematico, centinaia di metri quadri di splendida pittura meravigliosamente conservata, ritrovati e rimessi in luce da pochi anni, testimonianza di una cultura pittorica modernissima e raffinata. Il ciclo dei Santi Quattro, insieme ad altri ritrovamenti ugualmente recenti ma di minore entita come ad esempio quello nel convento di San Clemente mette in luce un momento della vita della Roma medievale, fino ad ora considerato 'vuoto' e privo di testimonianze artistiche; e segnala con grande evidenza la ricchezza e la modernita della pittura che si faceva a Roma, nelle cerchie dei papi, dei cardinali, nei loro palazzi fortificati e nelle loro chiese, anche quando il papa, con la curia, era esule e rifugiato altrove, anche quando la citta di Roma viene a lungo abbandonata dalla corte pontificia che preferisce sedi e palazzi come quelli di Viterbo o di Orvieto, piu lontani dalla minaccia federiciana. Mette in luce, anche, quanto 'gotica' sia stata la tradizionalissima cerchia dei papi: proprio perche la corte pontificia era, appunto, una corte, attorno a papi che nei decenni centrali del Duecento sono spesso francesi, in contatto con la cultura d'oltralpe, e si fanno tramite dell'arrivo di oggetti e di testimonianze del gusto nordico. Il volume si chiude con gli avvenimenti di un pontificato quello di Nicolo III Orsini che dura pochi anni, dal 1277 al 1280, ma che rappresenta un nuovo momento di importanza fondamentale per la storia della cultura e dell'arte a Roma. A differenza di molti suoi immediati predecessori, Nicolo Orsini non e francese, non e forestiero: e romano, di nobile famiglia, e il programma del suo regno e tutto volto a riprendere in mano la Citta, a riconsiderarne le tradizioni, a riproporre con forza l'immagine di un'autorita pontificia che e indissociabile dall'idea di Roma. Non molti anni fa, la riscoperta e il restauro degli affreschi del Sancta Sanctorum al Laterano che sono naturalmente compresi in questo volume - mostrarono con chiarezza a quale livello di qualita e di densita simbolica fosse arrivato questo papa, committente della cappella e della sua decorazione a mosaico e ad affresco, pur in un tempo cosi breve di regno. ‎L'ouvrage consiste en la publication du memoire d'Habilitation a diriger des recherches, presente en decembre 2002 devant l'universite de Paris I'Pantheon-Sorbonne. Il constitue une enquete sur l'abbatiat d'une principaute territoriale puissante, la Normandie, une region qui fut, de 1066 a 1204, englobee dans un ensemble territorial aux mains des ducs de Normandie-rois d?Angleterre. Ce type de recherche n?a jamais ete entrepris, ni en Normandie ni ailleurs. Seules quelques figures abbatiales prestigieuses, Lanfranc de Caen, Anselme du Bec ou Jean de Fecamp ont fait l?objet de monographies. L?enquete repose sur une prosopographie, c?est-a-dire un corpus de 327 notices biographiques des abbes des trente-trois abbayes benedictines. Ces notices sont organisees en cinq rubriques (datation et fin des abbatiats, origines familiales, origines religieuses, conditions d?acces a l?abbatiat et activite des abbes). Cette prosopographie, placee en annexe, sera un instrument de travail pour tous les chercheurs. Entre les Xe-XIe et le XIIe siecle, on observe un abaissement du niveau social des abbes. Venus des familles de l'entourage ducal, les abbes finissent par etre issus, pour la grande majorite, de la strate moyenne de l?aristocratie normande, mais aussi de regions exterieures a la Normandie (Italie, Allemagne, Angleterre, Val de Loire). Ils forment une veritable ? meritocratie ? . Leur formation au sein des ecoles monastiques fait d'eux des reformateurs du monachisme normand, des theologiens de renom, des specialistes de la musique, de bons connaisseurs du droit canon. Au XIIe siecle, leur formation passe de plus en plus par une experience pratique acquise dans l'exercice d'un office claustral. Leur accession a l'abbatiat les place au carrefour des interventions, parfois conflictuelles, du pape, du prince, des aristocraties bienfaitrices et de l?episcopat. Les ducs, de Guillaume le Conquerant a Jean sans Terre, ont cherche a s?entourer des abbes, dont ils recurent des conseils en matiere religieuse. Mais, plus neuve est la mise en evidence de l'influence tenue par les abbes ans le domaine politique. Deja a la fin du XIe siecle, mais de plus en plus au XIIe siecle, des abbes ont rempli des missions de grande importance, dans les affaires financieres, fiscales, diplomatiques.
