L'etude fondamentale du professeur Ludwig Borchardt qui publia en 1930 un article intitule Aegyptische "Altertumer", die ich fur neuzeitlich halte, est a l'origine des recherches qui ont ete entreprises par divers connaisseurs d'art egyptien afin de separer le bon grain de l'ivraie. Le sujet est fascinant et certains de ses plus interessants aspects n'ont jamais ete reveles. L'histoire des faux, des faussaires et de leur identification est en effet, par nature, confidentielle. Les progres de l'etude de l'art egyptien et des methodes scientifiques d'analyse ont engendre, chez plusieurs conservateurs, des revisions douloureuses de leurs choix anterieurs. Ils considerent aujourd'hui volontiers l'acquisition d'?uvres inauthentiques comme faisant partie des risques de leur metier. L'ouvrage est consacre a l'histoire de cette chasse aux faux et a l'identification des grands faussaires, tels que Oxan Aslanian, le "Maitre de Berlin", qui dans la premiere moitie du 20e siecle a trompe plus d'un conservateur ou collectionneur. ‎Since the discovery of prehistoric tombs on the island of Umm an-Nar in the 1950's, funerary monuments and mortuary rites of the ancient population of the Oman peninsula have been foci of archaeological research in the region. Literally hundreds of tombs have been excavated over the past four decades, but the fact that many of these had already been looted in antiquity and/or re-used often led excavators to adopt a slipshod approach to their recording. In 1995 an extraordinary tomb in Dubai was excavated with great care by a teamfrom the University of Sydney, setting new standards for the recording of grave goods and human skeletal remains. The discovery of bone pits outside the main structure which contained cremated remains raises a whole series of questions about the nature of the third millennium mortuary rites and the origins of the practice of cremation in the Arabian peninsula. Excavations at Al Sufouh is certain to be of great interest to archaeologists, biological anthropologists and historians concerned with the prehistoric population of the area known in Mesopotamian cuneiform sources as Magan. The interaction between that population and its Iranian and Harappan neighbours is explored in this detailed study. New.‎

‎The site of Capernaum, where Jesus preached and performed many of his miracles and from where five of the twelve apostles, foremost Peter originated, has attracted intense archaeological and scholarly interest ever since the American scholar Edward Robinson correctly identified its ruins with the center of Jesus' Galilean ministry in 1838. There are few sites like Capernaum, possibly with the exception of Qumran, where the interplay between the Scriptures, archaeology and written sources make any publication an event that immediately transcends the standard scholarly debate. No doubt such is the present publication of Bruno Callegher dealing with the isolated coin finds accumulated from the village area of Capernaum during surveys and excavations conducted over the past hundred years. In a meticulously detailed introduction Callegher takes his reader through the history of the sites' exploration focusing on the coin finds. Here for the first time a comprehensive picture of the coin finds at Capernaum and their historical and archaeological significance is presented. The introduction is not only extremely helpful for both laymen and specialists but also presents fascinating new information about unpublished coin material in the holdings of the SBF at Jerusalem. The chapter is followed by a in-depth analysis of the more than 1400 isolated coin finds with special attention paid to the provenance and the quantitative distribution of the coins by period - from the Seleucids to the Mamluks. By doing so for each of the periods Callegher moves beyond merely cataloging site coins used for dating excavated strata into the more fascinating facets of coin circulation and monetary history. In particular his minute description of the various categories of coins circulating in Capernaum during Roman and Byzantine rule (c. 90% of the total number of isolated coin found at the site) provide new and original insight into the use of money in Eastern Galilee during this period. Finally, the large number of references to the latest regional coin studies and sites and a copious bibliography turns Callegher's study into a vital tool for both historians and numismatists dealing with the Roman and Byzantine East. Questa Introduzione non solo e di estrema utilita sia per il lettore comune che per lo specialista, ma contiene anche non poche nuove informazioni relative a monete alla collezione numismatica, in parte ancora da pubblicare, dello Studium Biblicum Franciscanum di Gerusalemme. Segue l?approfondita analisi dei piu di 1400 ritrovamenti isolati prestando particolare attenzione alla provenienza e alla distribuzione quantitiva dele monete nei vari periodi - dai Seleucidi ai Mamelucchi. In questo modo si va al di la di un puro catalogo di monete utili per la datazione di strati archeologici, entro gli aspetti piu affascinanti della circolazione monetaria e della storia numismatica. In particolare la descrizione minuziosa dei vari generi di monete in circolazione a Cafarnao durante i periodi Romano e Bizantino (circa il 90% del nunero totale dei ritrovamenti isolati) offre un nuovo e originale punto di vista sull?uso delle monete nella Galilea orientale in questo contesto temporale.
