‎This study focuses on a major issue in Near Eastern prehistoric archaeology: the rise of the Halaf culture, ca. 5900 - 5400 cal. BC. The book presents in a detailed, quantified and lavishly illustrated manner the ceramics excavated by the National Museum of Antiquities Leiden at Tell Sabi Abyad, northern Syria. Concentrating on the 1996 - 2000 campaigns, the book also synthesizes much earlier work in order to come to a comprehensive overview. Tell Sabi Abyad thus far remains the only archaeological site in the Near East where the shift from a Pre-Halaf to an Early Halaf cultural assemblage can be followed within a continuous, meticulously stratified sequence. This shift occured during a short-lived transitional stage, radiocarbon dated at 6100-5900 cal. BC, In terms of the ceramics, this transition is characterized by the gradual replacement of plain Coarse Ware by intricately painted Fine Wares, and by numerous innovations in ceramic technology, morphology and decorative style. More than merely a pottery report, the book offers a lively discussion of past and present views on the origins of the Halaf culture. It also places the excavated ceramics in the broader socio-economic and symbolic context of Late Neolithic societies in northern Syria. Using the concepts of feasting and emulation, the study aims to gain insight in patterns of rapid ceramic innovation and change. ‎The Demotic texts published in this volume come from the Archives of the funerary-workers of the Memphite Necropolis. The papyri date to the Ptolemaic Period and were discovered early in the 19th century. The book is in two sections. The first part provides an introduction to the Archives and to the funerary-workers and their families. The topography of the Necropolis is discussed and the different types of tomb structures and funerary income are examined. The second part contains full editions of and commentaries on nine of the papyri, most of which are either unpublished or only available in summary and now-out-of-date editions. Seven of the texts are kept in the National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden; one is in the British Museum and another in the Hermitage. ‎Questo volume del Corpus della pittura medievale a Roma studia un periodo storico a forti contrasti. La storia inizia infatti dagli anni del pontificato di Innocenzo III: papa autoritario, di lucida visione teocratica e di vasti disegni politici, che proclama l'universalita della Chiesa e al tempo stesso bada a consolidare il suo potere temporale, fortificando i territori circostanti a Roma, estendendo l'autorita pontificia sulle regioni limitrofe, facendo insomma dello Stato della Chiesa uno stato agguerrito e capace di fronteggiare i pericoli e gli attacchi anche militari. Non meraviglia, in questo quadro ideologico e politico, che Innocenzo III sia anche il papa che mette mano ai piu grandi edifici della citta sacra, Roma, per rifarli e rammodernarli e in questo modo presentare l'immagine di una chiesa tradizionale, ma attuale e rinnovata. Tramite i cantieri innocenziani, Roma viene toccata da una potente ondata bizantineggiante, originata dal risalire degli artisti che erano stati attivi nei cantieri normanni di Palermo e Monreale, e che rimasti senza lavoro per la fine della potenza normanna in Sicilia e Italia meridionale vanno a cercarne la dove l'attivita e piu intensa, e quindi specialmente a Roma. Subito dopo pero le cose cambiano, e la cultura dell'Europa gotica comincia a premere anche alle porte della Citta per definizione piu tradizionalista di tutte. Nei decenni centrali del Duecento una vera e propria invasione di temi e iconografie rinnovate si verifica, negli edifici della citta che li hanno conservati e che sono stati riscoperti anche molto recentemente: il caso del grande ciclo ad affresco nel salone gotico dei Santi Quattro Coronati e emblematico, centinaia di metri quadri di splendida pittura meravigliosamente conservata, ritrovati e rimessi in luce da pochi anni, testimonianza di una cultura pittorica modernissima e raffinata. Il ciclo dei Santi Quattro, insieme ad altri ritrovamenti ugualmente recenti ma di minore entita come ad esempio quello nel convento di San Clemente mette in luce un momento della vita della Roma medievale, fino ad ora considerato 'vuoto' e privo di testimonianze artistiche; e segnala con grande evidenza la ricchezza e la modernita della pittura che si faceva a Roma, nelle cerchie dei papi, dei cardinali, nei loro palazzi fortificati e nelle loro chiese, anche quando il papa, con la curia, era esule e rifugiato altrove, anche quando la citta di Roma viene a lungo abbandonata dalla corte pontificia che preferisce sedi e palazzi come quelli di Viterbo o di Orvieto, piu lontani dalla minaccia federiciana. Mette in luce, anche, quanto 'gotica' sia stata la tradizionalissima cerchia dei papi: proprio perche la corte pontificia era, appunto, una corte, attorno a papi che nei decenni centrali del Duecento sono spesso francesi, in contatto con la cultura d'oltralpe, e si fanno tramite dell'arrivo di oggetti e di testimonianze del gusto nordico. Il volume si chiude con gli avvenimenti di un pontificato quello di Nicolo III Orsini che dura pochi anni, dal 1277 al 1280, ma che rappresenta un nuovo momento di importanza fondamentale per la storia della cultura e dell'arte a Roma. A differenza di molti suoi immediati predecessori, Nicolo Orsini non e francese, non e forestiero: e romano, di nobile famiglia, e il programma del suo regno e tutto volto a riprendere in mano la Citta, a riconsiderarne le tradizioni, a riproporre con forza l'immagine di un'autorita pontificia che e indissociabile dall'idea di Roma. Non molti anni fa, la riscoperta e il restauro degli affreschi del Sancta Sanctorum al Laterano che sono naturalmente compresi in questo volume - mostrarono con chiarezza a quale livello di qualita e di densita simbolica fosse arrivato questo papa, committente della cappella e della sua decorazione a mosaico e ad affresco, pur in un tempo cosi breve di regno. ‎L'ouvrage consiste en la publication du memoire d'Habilitation a diriger des recherches, presente en decembre 2002 devant l'universite de Paris I'Pantheon-Sorbonne. Il constitue une enquete sur l'abbatiat d'une principaute territoriale puissante, la Normandie, une region qui fut, de 1066 a 1204, englobee dans un ensemble territorial aux mains des ducs de Normandie-rois d?Angleterre. Ce type de recherche n?a jamais ete entrepris, ni en Normandie ni ailleurs. Seules quelques figures abbatiales prestigieuses, Lanfranc de Caen, Anselme du Bec ou Jean de Fecamp ont fait l?objet de monographies. L?enquete repose sur une prosopographie, c?est-a-dire un corpus de 327 notices biographiques des abbes des trente-trois abbayes benedictines. Ces notices sont organisees en cinq rubriques (datation et fin des abbatiats, origines familiales, origines religieuses, conditions d?acces a l?abbatiat et activite des abbes). Cette prosopographie, placee en annexe, sera un instrument de travail pour tous les chercheurs. Entre les Xe-XIe et le XIIe siecle, on observe un abaissement du niveau social des abbes. Venus des familles de l'entourage ducal, les abbes finissent par etre issus, pour la grande majorite, de la strate moyenne de l?aristocratie normande, mais aussi de regions exterieures a la Normandie (Italie, Allemagne, Angleterre, Val de Loire). Ils forment une veritable ? meritocratie ? . Leur formation au sein des ecoles monastiques fait d'eux des reformateurs du monachisme normand, des theologiens de renom, des specialistes de la musique, de bons connaisseurs du droit canon. Au XIIe siecle, leur formation passe de plus en plus par une experience pratique acquise dans l'exercice d'un office claustral. Leur accession a l'abbatiat les place au carrefour des interventions, parfois conflictuelles, du pape, du prince, des aristocraties bienfaitrices et de l?episcopat. Les ducs, de Guillaume le Conquerant a Jean sans Terre, ont cherche a s?entourer des abbes, dont ils recurent des conseils en matiere religieuse. Mais, plus neuve est la mise en evidence de l'influence tenue par les abbes ans le domaine politique. Deja a la fin du XIe siecle, mais de plus en plus au XIIe siecle, des abbes ont rempli des missions de grande importance, dans les affaires financieres, fiscales, diplomatiques. Cet ouvrage sera une contribution a l'histoire des elites dans une principaute du Grand Ouest de l'Europe medievale, des elites religieuses et intellectuelles dont l'implication dans l'exercice du pouvoir demeure forte a une epoque qui voit le debut de la secularisation des entourages princiers. ‎Im Zentrum der Abhandlung steht die Barkenkapelle des Konigs Sobekhotep III. in Elkab, deren dekorierte Bauteile in den belgischen Grabungen von 1938 bzw. 1968 aufgedeckt wurden. Ihr Baubestand ist so ausreichend erhalten, dass erstmals eine Rekonstruktion fur ein Bauwerk der 13. Dynastie gewagt werden konnte. Die Barkenkapelle des Konigs Sobekhotep III. steht dabei den Stationsheiligtumern des Mittleren und Neuen Reiches im Aufbau des Bildprogrammes sehr nahe. Das Heiligtum aus der 13. Dynastie nimmt nicht nur chronologisch eine vermittelnde Stellung zwischen den Bauten des Mittleren und des fruhen Neuen Reiches ein, sondern auch bei der Entwicklung der architektonischen Massverhaltnisse und des Dekorationsprogrammes. Ausgehend von diesem Heiligtum in Elkab werden weitere Bauwerke aus der Zeit der 13. und 17. Dynastie, deren Baubestand ausreichend erhalten ist, naher betrachtet und versuchsweise rekonstruiert. Zum einen ist dies der Schrein bzw. das Heiligtum des Konigs Antef V. in Koptos aus der 17. Dynastie, fur das hier erstmals eine Rekonstruktion des Gebaudes und der Toranlagen vorgestellt wird. In gleichem Masse gilt dies fur den Month-Tempel von Medamud, in dem zahlreiche Bauteile der 13. und 17. Dynastie verbaut waren. In Medamud ist es schliesslich aufgrund des ergrabenen Grundrisses des Tempels des Mittleren Reiches und der Zweiten Zwischenzeit moglich, die einzelnen Bauteile genauer im Tempelbezirk zu plazieren und verschiedenen Bauphasen zuzuweisen. Anhand dieser besser erhaltenen Bauwerke kann schliesslich nachgewiesen werden, dass die Tempelbaukunst der Zweiten Zwischenzeit in der Entwicklung der Dekorationsprogramme und der architektonischen Massverhaltnisse eine vermittelnde Stellung zwischen dem Mittleren und Neuen Reich einnahm. Ce qui permet a Ton Derks, d?inserer dans leur contexte historique des conduites sociales jusqu?alors mal interpretees, ? la prise en compte des deplacement de categories entre hommes et femmes, masculin et feminin, qu?apportent les etudes de genre mises en perspective par Violaine Sebillotte, ? l?exploration d?un certain nombre de domaines nouveaux, parmi lesquels, celui des emotions que j?ai moi?meme aborde, ou celui de la perception des couleurs dont Adeline Grand?Clement s?est attachee a eclairer la logique. L?ensemble des incursions ainsi menees dans l?Antiquite (grecque, romaine, phenicienne, gallo-romaine), fait emerger une richesse qui n?est jamais figee et qui fait echo aux propos de Jean-Pierre Vernant dans la Preface redigee en 1968, pour l?edition des etudes de Louis Gernet reunies sous le titre ? Anthropologie de la Grece antique ? . Pour definir les approches qui avaient ete celles de ce savant, Vernant ecrivait : ? On ne saurait comprendre leur dynamisme que si on s?interroge, non certes sur l?Homme, mais sur les mentalites particulieres des hommes, des groupes humains qui les ont mis en ?uvre, si on cherche a penetrer ce que furent leurs modes de penser, leurs cadres et outils intellectuels, leurs formes de sensibilite et d?action, leurs categories psychologiques au sens que Mauss donnait a ce terme. ? ‎The Historical Atlas of the Persian Gulf is a joint initiative of the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes in Paris, the University of Tehran, and the Documentation Centre of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran. The aim of this trilingual (French, English and Persian) publication is to trace the evolution of the cartographical representations of the Gulf between 1500 and 1750. About a hundred printed and manuscript maps from libraries and archives all over Europe, the United States and Iran have been gathered, some of them being published for the first time. The maps and charts are presented in five sections dedicated to Portuguese, Dutch, French, English and German cartography. Each item is published with enlarged detail reproductions showing the Gulf, and accompanied by brief commentaries as well as transcriptions of the place names and legends. The authors make numerous suggestions as to how the maps and charts developed in the context of international scientific exchange during the Early Modern age. Hence, the Atlas shows new perspectives on the genealogy of Gulf maps and provides an excellent working tool for future research on the cartography and the history of one of the World?s great strategic areas. Une centaine de cartes imprimees et manuscrites provenant de bibliotheques et d?archives d?Europe, des Etats-Unis et d?Iran ont ete rassemblees, dont certaines publiees pour la premiere fois. ‎Een onderzoek naar de ligging en exploitatie van thans verdwenen venen in het gebied tussen Antwerpen, Turnhout, Geertruidenberg en Willemstad "Actualisering 2013" Wist u dat een groot deel van de streek tussen Antwerpen en Geertruidenberg ooit met veen bedekt was? Dat daar tussen 1250 en 1750 veel turf en zout van gemaakt werd? En dat de zee een deel van dat veen met klei bedekt heeft? Verdwenen Venen vertelt wat veen eigenlijk is, waar dat veen lag en vooral: hoe het zo uit het zicht kon verdwijnen en waar u er toch nog sporen van kunt zien. Een voor de streek belangrijke en voor de Nederlanden uitzonderlijke geschiedenis wordt hier opnieuw verhaald, aangevuld met de resultaten van nieuw onderzoek. In dit geheel bijgewerkte en van extra illustraties voorziene boek wordt aangetoond dat vooral in de noordwestelijke helft van het bestudeerde gebied tot aan de middeleeuwse en latere ontginning uitgestrekte veengebieden aanwezig waren. Bovendien wordt uitvoerig beschreven waarom we die venen nu niet meer zien. Ze zijn deels weggegraven, deels weggespoeld en deels met klei bedekt. Turf- en zout werd ervan gemaakt en soms werd er op het veen landbouw bedreven. Het boek beschrijft ook de aanleg van de nog wel herkenbare turfvaarten en de wijze waarop die werden gebruikt. Het boek uit 1989 was aanleiding voor allerlei nader onderzoek door verschillende personen en instellingen uit Nederland en Vlaanderen. De resultaten daarvan zijn verwerkt in de nieuwe uitgave van 2013. Zo konden er toch nog restjes veen geanalyseerd worden, werd ruim 10 hectare van het eindstadium van een turfgraverij blootgelegd en onderzocht, werd het bestek van een turfschuit van rond 1700 ontcijferd zodat deze schuit nagebouwd kon worden, en nog veel meer.‎
