‎New English Original bdg. HC. Oblong 4to. (22 x 30 cm). In English and Romanian. 115, [140] p., fully color ills. Byzantine manuscripts in Bucharest's collections.= Manuscrise bizantine în colectii bucurestene. Project coordinator: Ileana Stanculescu. From the first article: "From the photographs taken over time, we chose those which best capture a special artistic quality with their strictly documentary value. This selection of manuscripts ends before the dawn of the 16th century, given the common view that after the fall of Constantinople (1453) we can no longer speak of a truly Byzantine culture, but only of a Byzantine style, albeit one which continued to shine. The selection of images was also intended to emphasize not only the aesthetics of the illuminated folios, but also those details that are significant for the codices as a whole, things which would dryly translate today as typeface font type, page layout and binding. Far from the sight of all interested parties, the Byzantine manuscripts in the Bucharest repositories are still full of mysteries waiting to be discovered and explained by researchers. We present these images here to provide a platform for a wider discussion of the significance of the Byzantine legacy for Romanian pre-modern culture. For the identification and description of the items chosen we used several catalogues, either manuscript or in print, which we then compared with the corresponding labels used by the repositories. The bibliography at the end of the volume indicates the various catalogues used for each collection. We found a wealth of details pertaining to the manuscript collections of the Romanian Patriarchy in the album published by the archimandrite Policarp. This is an excellent occasion to thank the specialists involved in the inventory of the collection for the additional information they supplied. We extend our warmest gratitude to them. Here and there we updated and corrected the information found in the aforementioned sources in the light of recent research: the dating of ms. sl. II 280, from the Library of the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church at the Antim Monastery. We thank Mrs Tatiana Popova (University of St. Petersburg in Severodvinsk), for the observation that we are dealing with a direct copy, made at the end of the 14th century, of the Russian metropolitan Kyprian's reworking (dated 1385) of the Ladder of John Climax. Ms. sl. II 280 belongs to a group of manuscripts kept at Antim Monastery, but originates from a collection in Slava Rusa, a settlement in Dobrogea and a known...".‎

‎New English Paperback. 4to. (28 x 23 cm). In English and Turkish. [10], 142, [1] p., color ills. Ottoman ceramics embracing the Mediterranean and their reflections to the present.= Akdenizle kucaklasan Osmanli seramikleri ve günümüze ulasan yansimalari. In the considerably long time span from the 16th century to the beginning of the 20th century, when the Iznik, Kutahya and Canakkale ceramics were in production, the Ottoman Empire spread across three continents, and her galleons, galleys and lighters carried her flag on trade missions and voyages on the open seas such as the Red Sea, the Persian Gulf, the Black Sea and the Indian Ocean in addition to the Mediterranean. Various types of imaginary ships in the Ottoman ceramics bringing to life the dreams of the masters regarding the far-away lands seem to be capturing an image only. The most important feature of the vessels, usually depicted without details, is their sails of various types, which led them to the open seas.‎

‎Fine English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 13 cm). In english. [6], 173 p., color ills., Patara. The history and ruins of the capital city of Lycian League. Translated by Merih Çobanoglu. Signed ad inscribed by Isik. Patara (Patar in Hittite language, Pttara in Lycian language) is located near the Gelemis village in Antalya province on the southwestern coast of Turkey. Patara, an ancient Lycian harbor city, can be dated back to the 8th century B.C. It is said that the city was founded by Patarus, a son of Apollo. In ancient times, the Xanthus River flowed through Patara, where was the only entrance to the Xanthos valley. Thus Patara became a very important harbor city and flourished because of trade throughout history.‎

Volume I was concerned almost exclusively with the finds made in the deep sounding on the inner flank of the western hill, which penetrated the Early Bronze Age and Chalcolithic settlements, while Volume II covered the greatly extended occupation of the entire site in the Middle Bronze Age. Since it now remains for us to describe the more modest, but perhaps equally interesting installations of the Late Bronze Age, it will be understood... The earliest buildings of this settlement, dating from the Late Bronze Age appear in our plan ofLevel III(Fig. 2). It will be seen that only a limited area, measuring approximately 30 m. square, was exposed, but it proves sufficient to illustrate the still rather impoverished character of the place at this period. The actual summit of the hill at this time must have been located a little to the west of the area excavated; so that the two parallel streets, each about 3 m. wide, sloped upwards at an inclination of about 1:40 from approaches on the eastern... Reference to the Late Bronze Age buildings in Area R, on the northern periphery of the western hill, has been postponed until now because, in our own opinion, they have no resemblance to or connection with the ordinary domestic dwellings exposed elsewhere. This, however, depends on an argument regarding their purpose, which cannot be discussed usefully until they have been described properly. The reader should, at the same time, immediately be reminded that it was the continued excavation of this area, after the Late Bronze Age buildings had been removed, which led to the discovery in the Middle Bronze levels...‎

Nuh ve Cudi Dagi Sempozyum Bildirileri. 27-29 September 2013. German explorers have visited the summit of Mount Cudi since 1899. Unique photographs were taken and much fascinating information has been assembled. Although I did not visit the site so far myself, I was able to explore the summit by using Google Earth images, through which I indeed managed to put together many important pieces of the jigsaw puzzle on the possible location of what may actually remain of Noah's ark. Johannes Lepsius Figure 2: Johannes Lepsius (Lepsius House, Potsdam) The first photo ever taken on the summit of Mount Cudi stems·from Johannes Lepsius and dates to the summer of 1899. It is printed in his book »Ex Oriente Lux, in which he reports his »Besteigung des Ararat« (»Ascent of Ararat«). He explains: Not the 'Masis' at the border of Russia, but the Cudi on the northern edge of Mesopotamia is the Ararat of Scripture as (found) in oriental tradition, Lepsius was bornin Berlin on December i5, i858, while his father Karl Richard Lepsius (1810-1884) is considered to be the founding father of German Egyptology, who in turn was a friend of the famous naturalist Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859). Lepsius' mother, Elizabeth (1828-1899) was the daughter of the famous composer Bernhard Klein (1793-1832) and the great-granddaughter of the writer Friedrich Nicolai (1733-1811). Consequently at Lepsius' home several influential personalities within the fields of politics, culture and ecclesiastical life regularly gathered. Johannes Lepsius himself had studied math and philosophy, while he received a doctorate in Theology in i880. While he was an assistant reverend at the German‎

‎Hermus (Gediz) valley in Western Turkey. Results of an archaeological and historical survey.‎

‎New English Paperback. 4to. (29 x 21 cm). In English with a Turkish summary. 368 p., b/w and color ills. Hermus (Gediz) valley in Western Turkey. Results of an archaeological and historical survey. The importance of Gediz River, which has been inhabited since Neolithicum (6th Millenium B.C.) in 15 sites, had increased rapidly due to fertile lands and suitable communication routes with Aegean Islands and Interior Anatolia. The Gediz known Seha River Land by Hittites was ruled (ca.1300 B.C.) by vassal king Manapatarhunda appointed by Mursili II. Many newly discovered Late Bronze Age sites i.e. Kumtepe, K. Yamanlar, Pinarbasi, Nemrut, Akçapinar, Asartepe-Urganli, Gavurtepe, testify to this expansion. During the Iron Age, Gediz River was called Hermus. The valley connected Ionia, Aeolis and Lydia with each other. The Aeolic towns were generally small and fortified on high and rocky hill sites with isolated acropolis on the summit. Some newly discovered fortified settlements were connected with so far unknown Aeolic cities: Aegiroessa with Boztepe, Notium with Kumtepe and Killa with Asarlik Tepe. The central part of the Hermus valley was the land of Lydians with the capital Sardis. No other Lydian town was satisfactorily explored so far. Clear traces of Lydian occupation were attested in Daldis, Akçapinar, Mersinli, and Kemaliye during recent research. The burial mounds i.e.tumuliwith tomb chambers built with delicately dressed limestone blocks were so popular in Lydia and hence compared with Egypt and called also Lydian pyramids. Some of them were investigated and recorded during the survey which were illicitly excavated by treasure hunters. Hermus enjoyed a high degree of prosperity under Attalids and Romans. The associations of professions are well developed and mentioned in inscriptions especially in the production of textile and leather. Numerous fortifications, monasteries and a summer residence at Nymphaeum were built during 13th century under the Lascarids. 12th and 13th centuries are characterized also by migrating Turcoman tribes into Byzantine territories. The Emirate of Saruhan (1313-1410) continued the former stability in central Lydia. Manisa started to prosper as a capital of the Emirate. During Ottoman Period Manisa was a city governed by princes of the Sultanate. For that reason, Manisa is a typical Ottoman town adorned with numerous mosques, khans, Turkish baths and covered bazaars. The fertile valley is still an extensive reservoir for the research on the past cultures not only with respect to material remains but also the continuity of cultures is still perceivable i.e. in the tradition of place names, agriculture, handicrafts and architecture, despite the evergrowing pressure of 'modernity.'‎
