‎Rituals, Memory, and Societal Dynamics: Contributions to Social Archaeology A Collection of Essays in Memory of Sharon Zuckerman‎

‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 2025 Paperback, pages: xiii + 301 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:42 b/w, 28 col., 26 tables b/w, Language:English, *New. ISBN 9782503612928.‎

‎Thanks largely to the introduction of new methods of recovery and analysis, archaeology is increasingly treated as a science. Yet, it should continue to ask questions that are founded in the humanities. This is especially true of social archaeology, which forms the core of this volume. Being based on the notion that ?the social? permeates all areas of life, the chapters gathered here give priority to archaeological data and contexts, which in turn form the prerequisite for analyzing how, at particular times and places, people negotiated or reaffirmed the society around them. Case studies from the Levant and the Eastern Mediterranean sit alongside selected comparative cases from other parts of the world and assess issues such as the development of cultural characteristics of societies, societal continuity and collapse, religious beliefs and rituals, and the role of social memory, as well as interactions within and between societies. The volume is dedicated to the memory of our colleague and friend, Dr Sharon Zuckerman, who embraced the quest for ?the social? throughout her career. TABLE OF CONTENTS List of Illustrations 1. ‎From the Chalcolithic onwards, the culture and society of Sumer flourished along the banks of the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, with communities living close to the ancient shoreline in an environment that was closely linked to the exploitation of fluvial systems, the sea, and the unique marshlands of the area. This volume gathers together research first presented as part of a workshop, entitled Sumer and the Sea: Deltas, Shoreline, and Urban Water Management in 3rd Millennium Mesopotamia, to explore the interaction between Sumerians and their water-dominated environment. The chapters gathered here offer updates on methodologies and the most recent research from the field to provide new understanding and fresh insights into how the Sumerians adapted to the world in which they lived. ‎Gendering the Nordic Past Dialogues between Perspectives‎

‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 2025 Paperback, Pages: 264 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:6 b/w, 19 col., 11 tables b/w., Language:English, *New. ISBN 9782503608877.‎

‎The idea of the Nordic nations as champions of gender equality is firmly rooted in today?s perceptions of society. But how does such a modern comprehension influence our views of history? Does our understanding of gender impact on how we see the past? And do the ways in which we gender the past have an effect on our present identities? From the Stone Age to the Early Modern period, and from warriors and queens to households and burials, this groundbreaking volume draws together research conducted as part of the project Gendering the Nordic Past, an inter-Nordic collaboration aimed at (re)evaluating and revitalizing the field of gender studies in the region. The chapters gathered in this volume, contributed by archaeologists and historians, theologians, art historians, and specialists in gender studies, aim to offer novel perspectives on the ways in which we gender the past. While many of the chapters focus explicitly on the Nordic countries, comparisons are also drawn with other regions in order to provide both internal and external views on the role of the collective past in present Nordic identities. The result, presented here, is an essential dialogue into the importance of gender in creating and maintaining past identities, as well as a new understanding of how the identities that we construct for the past can relate to heritage narratives. ‎Resourcescape and Human Impact in Southwest Asia‎

‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 2025 Paperback, Pages: xii + 164 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:42 b/w, 56 col., 9 tables b/w., Language:English, *New. ISBN 9782503616681.‎

‎Landscape archaeology has, in recent years, expanded as a discipline to include various aspects of human-environment interactions in the past. In line with this trend, this volume offers a comprehensive perspective on three topics: theoretical and textual approaches to landscape, which provides an important framework for interdisciplinary research; the use of land and resources, which, while a popular topic in Southwest Asian archaeology, remains relatively understudied in connection to ancient technologies; and human impact on the highlands. The contributions gathered in this volume cover topics as diverse as agricultural practices, metallurgy, trade, and environmental research, and draw together evidence from both textual and material evidence to shed light on different places and periods from the Bronze Age through to the Roman era. Together, these varied case studies offer new insights into how different methods can be utilized to assess unique patterns in human-environment interactions in Southwest Asia. ‎Sanctuary of Parthenos at Ancient Neapolis (Kavala) Volume I Incised and Painted Ceramic Inscriptions from the Sanctuary and in Aegean Thrace‎

‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 2025 Paperback, Pages: xvi + 192 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:191 b/w, 17 col., 20 tables b/w., Language:English, *New. ISBN 9782503614809.‎

‎The ancient city of Neapolis (modern Kavala, Greece) was founded by Thasos in the seventh century BCE at a strategic location where the Thracian hinterlands meet the Aegean Sea. The patron deity of this North Aegean polis was Parthenos (the Maiden), known to us through epigraphic and archaeological evidence. Her sanctuary came to light in the twentieth century during rescue excavations, and yielded numerous finds, most of which date from the Archaic period. This monograph provides a discussion of the history of excavations at this sanctuary, as well as a contextual examination of the material, leading to a new interpretation of Parthenos? identity. Among the wealth of finds from the site, the corpus of incised and painted ceramic inscriptions stands out, as it offers a unique glimpse into the history of the cosmopolitan temenos and the dedicatory practices and rituals that took place there. The inscribed vessels carry dedications, numerical and other graffiti, and dipinti, as well as the initials of the goddess, which designate them as sacred equipment. When considered in the context of the ceramic inscriptions from sanctuaries across Aegean Thrace, they further underscore the important role of Neapolis and the Sanctuary of Parthenos in the commercial networks and cultural dynamics of the Aegean, both in the early stages of Greek colonization, and in the centuries that followed. ‎Common Wares of Sagalassos‎

‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 2000 softcover Pages: 350 pages, Size:210 x 295 mm, Language :English . ISBN 9782503507972.‎

‎By far the most common archaeological finds consist of potsherds. Although the study of ceramics started at an early date, discrepancies and lacunae are rife in this area of archaeological research. For the Roman period the so-called fine wares have always attracted more interest than the more utilitarian ceramics. Although this situation has been rectified to a large extent in the Roman west, the eastern part of the empire remains by and large terra incognita, with most of the effort going into the study of fine wares. A second discrepancy exists between the coastal areas, which are rather well known, and the inland sites, specifically in Asia Minor. This book is one of the first attempts to rectify at least in part the existing situation by studying the common wares of the Roman town of Sagalassos in Pisidia from the first to the middle of the seventh century. The research on a previously unknown pottery manufacturing centre is placed within the wider framework of pottery research in the eastern Mediterranean, but contrary to most of the extant studies, the chosen approach is not limited to typology and chronology. Also included are a full mineralogical/chemical analysis of the different fabrics, both local and imported, while the full typological spectrum of wares and types is described, quantified and illustrated. As such it represents a major addition to the ceramics research concerning the eastern Roman empire.‎

‎Writing Tablets of Roman Tongeren (Belgium) and Associated Wooden Finds‎

‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 2025 Hardback, Pages: 424 p. Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:3 b/w, 295 col., 11 tables b/w. Language:English *new. ISBN 9782503616872.‎

‎Roman wooden writing tablets, known in Latin as tabulae ceratae, have been found by archaeologists in various locations around the former capital of the civitas/municipium Tungrorum or Roman Tongeren (now the Belgian city of Tongeren-Borgloon). These rare and delicate finds are remarkable not only due to the excellent state of their preservation, but also because they are inscribed with the remnants of texts, once etched into an overlying wax layer, that can, to the discerning eye, still be deciphered. The tablets not only provide concrete information about religious, judicial and administrative practices, but they also enhance our understanding of the complex processes of Romanisation and Latinisation in the northwestern civitates and municipia of the Roman Empire. Unearthed in the first half of the twentieth century, with a second group discovered in 2013, the Roman tablets housed in the Gallo-Roman Museum of Tongeren-Borgloon and in the city?s municipal heritage depository, became the object of an in-depth study by an international team of specialists piloted by the Gallo-Roman Museum. It is the results of this project that are presented here in this volume for the first time. The painstaking process of deciphering and interpreting the script marks and text fragments is explored via analysis of palaeography, philology and onomastics, along with key scientific techniques such as wax analysis, wood species identification, and script visualisation by Multi-Light Reflectance Imaging. Rich detail is also provided about other associated wooden finds that shed light on how and where the tablets were produced. The result is a beautifully illustrated and insightful volume that introduces the lost world of Roman Tongeren and its writing tablets to professionals and the general public alike.Edited by Else Hartoch and with contributions by Bl nsdorf J., Scholz M., Accardo S., Boudin M., Deforce K., De Vos D., Groetembril S., Hameeuw H., Hartoch E., Marquez C., Pauwels D., Raepsaet G., Raepsaet-Charlier M.-Th., Vanderhoeven A., Van Kersen V., Verbanck-Pi rard A. & Watteeuw L.‎

‎, Hermann, 2020 Hardcover, 450 pages, 22 x 28 cm, illustr . *Neuf. ISBN 9791037001627.‎

It is a fascinating document of some of the finest achievements in craftsmanship, drawing on the historical context as well as literary and artistic sources. After a first section which explains the technical processes at the disposal of the ancient goldsmith, the jewelry itself is described, period by period. The book was first published in 1961, and this new edition has been extensively revised to to take account of recent discoveries; a large proportion of the important pieces of jewelry, drawn from museums around the world, is represented in 64 pages of plates; and a full list of sites with bibliographical references accompanies the text.‎

‎Studies in Hellenistic Architecture‎

‎Toronto, University of Toronto Press, 2006 Linnen binding under dustjacket, 460 pages, 28 x 21 cm, English text. *fine condition . ISBN 9780802039149.‎

‎Studies in Hellenistic Architecture is a detailed analysis of the development of the major building-types of the Hellenistic age ? the mid-fourth century B.C. to the time of the Roman conquest of the Eastern Mediterranean. In this meticulous work, Frederick E. Winter reveals how the architects of the period went beyond anything achieved by their Classical Greek predecessors, and how these impressive skills prepared the way for many of Rome's later architectural achievements. Geographically, the monuments included in this volume extend from Spain to Afghanistan and from Provence to North Africa. Winter discusses the architectural achievements of the various regional styles of the Eastern Mediterranean, and takes a detailed look at Hellenistic developments west of the Adriatic. While the interrelationship of these regional developments is often unclear, especially in cases where there are no explicit criteria for dating, Winter makes excellent use of the advance in scholarship over the past fifty to sixty years, offering the first real attempt at a synthesis of this vast subject. Studies in Hellenistic Architecture is an invaluable resource, containing a wealth of illustrations of the various types of Hellenistic building and the most comprehensive scholarship to date on the topic.‎

‎Origins of Classical Architecture: Temples, Orders, and Gifts to the Gods in Ancient Greece‎

‎, Yale University Press, 2014 Linnen binding under dustjacket, 288 pages, 30 colour images + 230 black-&-white illustrations, 26.5 x 22 cm. English text. *New . ISBN 9780300182767.‎

‎The Greek architectural orders?Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian?lie at the heart of the classical traditions of building, and yet satisfying accounts for their origins have proved elusive. In contrast with conventional theories that would see the orders originating over the course of a long evolution, this book stresses the suddenness of the phenomenon and its dependence on historical context, human agency, and artistic inspiration. Casting new light on a subject that has preoccupied architects since the Renaissance, Mark Wilson Jones shows how construction, influence, appearance, and meaning found expression in complex and multifaceted designs. New emphasis is placed on the relationship between the orders and the temples of worship that they were created to adorn. Temples were exquisitely made offerings to the divinity, and they also contained valuable offerings. In revealing affinities between certain offerings and the orders, the author explains how these gave architectural expression to sensibilities of intense social and religious significance.‎

‎Antioch: The Lost Ancient City‎

‎, Princeton University Press, 2000 Softcover, 253 pages, 23cm x 30.5cm, English text Fine copy. ISBN 9780691049335.‎

‎This lavish exhibition catalog brings to life Antioch, the magnificent city known for its Hellenic culture and luxurious way of life, once ranking with Rome, Alexandria, and Constantinople as one of the great metropolises of the Roman and early Christian world. Located in what is now southern Turkey, Antioch was the capital of Ancient Syria, a vital marketplace at the crossroads between East and West. It was here that St. Paul preached to the first gentile community to be called "Christians" and where a Greek-speaking Jewish culture flourished alongside Roman, Egyptian, and Near Eastern cults. A large middle-class shared in the wealth and culture of the city, and art abounded in numerous forms, especially in beautiful mosaics depicting scenes from mythology and everyday life. Featuring 118 objects excavated from the city's ruins, all reproduced in full color, Antioch: The Lost Ancient City recreates the spatial sensation, visual splendor, and cultural richness of this urban center. Devastated by an earthquake in 526 C.E., as well as by fires, plagues and invasions by Persians, Antioch survived only in memory through ancient written accounts until the 1930s, when excavations revealed a wealth of finds from the private houses of its inhabitants, including a large cache of floor mosaics. In addition, archaeologists found several churches, a stadium, a circus, a theater, and several baths. This catalog displays and describes the excavated artifacts--mosaics, sculpture, glass, metalwork, coins--within their architectural and cultural contexts, thereby evoking the street life as well as the domestic lives of Antioch's citizens. Among the treasures are the mosaics The Drinking Contest between Dionysos and Herakles and The Judgment of Paris, the Antioch chalice, gold jewelry from Syria, bronze tyche figurines, and mosaics of river and sea deities. Antioch emerges as a compelling model of a melting-pot city, one that challenges our own notions of civic community and diversity. The contributors are Susan Boyd, Bernadette Brooten, John J. Dobbins, Anna Gonosov , Susan Ashbrook Harvey, Florent Heintz, Sandra Knudsen, Christine Kondoleon, Michael Maas, William Metcalf, James Russell, Sarolta Tak cs, Cornelius Vermeule III, and Fikret Yegul.‎

‎What did ?religion? mean for the Ancient Egyptians? Was the state involved in acting as a unifying and founding force for Egyptian religion or can we still identify some clashes between different religious practices? To what extent did different rituals, practices, and beliefs intersect and merge across time and space? Such questions have long preoccupied scholars working in the field, but they have often only been considered through the lens of official, ?centralized? texts. Yet increasingly, there is an acknowledgment that such texts require calibration from archaeological data in order to offer a more nuanced understanding of how people must have lived and worshipped. The chapters gathered in the volume aim to offer a thorough exploration of Egyptian cultural and religious beliefs, and to explore how these impacted on other areas of daily life. Contributors explore the connection between religion and central power, the paradigms around burial and access to the afterlife, the interconnections between religion, demonology, magic, and medicine, and the impact of multicultural interaction on the religious landscape. What emerges from this discussion is an understanding that the only truly identifiable clash is that between modern, Eurocentric perspectives and the views of the ancient Egyptians themselves. Sommario: Prima parte: Introduzione. Precedenti studi topografici. ‎Leuven, Leuven University Press, 1993 Softcover, 277 pages, 27.5 x 21 cm, English text. *Fine condition. ISBN 9789061865742.‎

‎Sagalassos, once the metropolis of the Western Taurus range (Pisidia, Turkey), was only thoroughly surveyed in 1884 and 1885 by an Austrian team directed by K. Lanckoronski. In 1986-1989 this work was resumed by a British-belgian team co-directed by Dr. Stephen Mitchell (University College of Swansea) and by Prof. Dr. Marc Waelkens (Catholic University of Leuven). In 1990 Sagalassos became a full scale Belgian project and a leading centre for interdisciplinary archaeological and archaeometrical research. Due to its altitude, the site is one of the best preserved towns from classical antiquity, with a rich architectural and sculptural tradtion dating from the second century BC to the sixth century AD. From early Imperial times untiel the early Byzantine period a complete range of coarse and red slip wares was produced locally. Excavations are concentrated on qthe upper and lower agoras to document the plitical and commercial life in the town and also in the area where a late Hellenistic fountain house, which stll functions to date, and a Roman library were discovered. Major efforts are undertaken to restore the excavated monuments in their old glory. Several disciplines integrate the town again within its ancient environment and document the central role which Sagalassos played in the area.‎

‎The body or relics of a saint could attract divine protection on the community and the place where they were kept. If, in some cases, the monasteries were structures of assistance to sanctuaries of certain notoriety, starting from the 7th century, they increasingly played the role of protagonists, autonomously managing the devotional activities derived from the acquisition or translation of relics. The need to preserve the isolation of the 'clausura' and to manage, at the same time, an increasing flow of pilgrims led these monasteries to build new spaces for prayer, communion and assistance. This book includes the Proceedings of the International Conference held in Naples (Italy) on November 28-29, 2022. The Conference - organized, as part of a Marie-Curie research project, by the Fondazione San Bonaventura with the contribution of the Italian Ministry of Culture - brought together historians, archaeologists, and art historians to discuss the theme of spatial articulation of monasteries chosen as places of pilgrimage during the Early Middle Ages in Western Europe. From this interdisciplinary discussion, exciting insights have emerged on aspects of particular relevance, such as the organization of the funerary space and interaction between monks and laypeople, the elements of balance or clash between 'clausura' and hospitality and the comparison between male and female monasteries as devotional centers. ‎The expansion of Rome into northwestern Europe brought with it the presence and the increased usage of coinage both within the empire and in the Barbaricum. Coin Finds and Monetization in the Roman Northwest presents a study of coin finds and the monetary economy of northwestern continental Europe over much of the Roman period (c. 50 BC?AD 274). One of the largest datasets of coin finds ever assembled is deployed to analyze distribution patterns and fluctuations over time and space. It is clear that the Roman state made a concerted effort to manage coinage and the monetary economy during its rule in northwestern Europe, to the extent that was possible. Regionality is, however, a key feature of the coined monetary economy that resulted from deliberate action or the state?s inability to respond to demand, underscoring how centralized and empire-wide factors had an impact in the study region. Publication of this book has been aided by a grant from the von Bothmer Publication Fund of the Archaeological Institute of America. ‎This issue of Journal of Urban Archaeology combines an open call for papers with a special thematic section focused on the entanglement of political control and colonialism with the archaeology of urban sites in the Near East and Egypt during the late Ottoman and the Mandate periods. The articles in this special issue examine how earlier colonial and orientalist approaches informed and shaped archaeological fieldwork, and created persistent legacies in the study of ancient urban sites, through the use of specifi c case studies. Through this approach, these articles demonstrate how the critical re-examination of legacy data can structure nuanced narratives, and together, the authors point the way forwards for dismantling current paradigms around the urban archaeology of the region. ‎Sanctuary of Parthenos at Ancient Neapolis (Kavala), Volume II Pottery, Stone Inscriptions, and Small finds‎

‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 2025 Paperback, xviii + 272 Pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:253 b/w, 83 col., 4 tables b/w., Language:English, *new. ISBN 9782503617671.‎

‎The ancient city of Neapolis (modern Kavala, Greece) was founded by Thasos in the seventh century BCE at a strategic location where the Thracian hinterlands meet the Aegean Sea. The patron deity of this North Aegean polis was Parthenos (the Maiden), a goddess often associated with Artemis and known to us through epigraphic and archaeological evidence. Her sanctuary came to light in the twentieth century, during rescue excavations, and yielded numerous finds, most of which date from the Archaic period. This edited volume draws together the material evidence from the Sanctuary of Parthenos, with a particular focus on the ceramic wares, stone inscriptions, and small finds from the site. Published as a counterpart to an earlier publication in this series, Amalia Avramidou?s monograph, The Sanctuary of Parthenos at Ancient Neapolis (Kavala): Incised and Painted Ceramic Inscriptions from the Sanctuary and in Aegean Thrace, the essays gathered here nonetheless form a stand-alone volume that sheds light on both the importance of the site as a place of cult, and more broadly the role that it played within the commercial networks and cultural dynamics of the Aegean.
