ISBN 9782503531649.‎ ‎In Late Antiquity, Ptolemy?s treatise on cartography (second century AD) was yet to achieve the recognition that Ptolemy had hoped for, despite relatively wide distribution. However, in the early Middle Ages, knowledge of the Geographia did not disappear completely, owing mainly to treatises on astronomy translated from Arabic. The Latin version produced at the beginning of the 15th century did not, therefore, have the revolutionary character that is often attributed to it. The work that made it possible to understand the universe of Antiquity as it appeared in the classics was well received from the ?literary? point of view. But the astrologists and scientists educated in universities were instrumental, in a way that has, until now, been little studied, in analysing the contradictions between the Ptolemy?s representation of the universe and other representations that were still current and accepted. The long process of the modernisation of Ptolemy?s vision entered a decisive phase at the beginning of the second half of the fifteenth century following the synthesis between humanism and natural philosophy. It continued until the beginning of the sixteenth century, considering the modes of representation (anachronistically called ?projections?), retaining the concept of the influence of celestial bodies on the sublunar sphere, a feature of conceptions of the world held since Antiquity that the work of Ptolemy justified as best. This book questions a certain number of commonplaces of cultural history. The walls, but above all the pavements, with their rich mosaic decor, are often well conserved when protected by a covering of sand or earth. Over the last twenty years, an interest has also developed for the evolution of liturgical rites and therefore for the material installations which reveal their trace in places of worship. This book is divided into two parts. A continuous account examines successively the ecclesiastical organisation of the territory in the period under consideration, the repartition of the churches in the cities and in the countryside, the different types of plans and the resulting technical specificities (wood roofing, vaulted apses, and eventually domes), the mode of floor decoration in function of the plans, and sometimes the wall decoration, and also the liturgical furnishings (altar, ambo, seats) and installations (chancel, precincts, reliquaries) which are associated. Numerous synoptic tables and typological plates allow a rapid glance at the particularities provided by archaeology which, given the scarcity of literary sources, is essential for the history of the Churches in the provinces which correspond with Jordan at the present time, the hagiography in the region, the economic and social history, and the evolution in the liturgy. The inventory, interrupted in 1998, includes a normalised analysis of the architecture and liturgical furnishings of about 180 monuments. It reproduces and translates the numerous inscriptions (in general on mosaics) which allow quite precise dating of the churches between the 6th and the 8th centuries, sometimes the names of the titular saints and the circumstances of their construction or their decoration. In Late Antiquity and in the early Middle Ages four areas are distinguished in the Eastern Black Sea Coast Region: Lazica (South part), Apsilia, Abasgia. The coastline is connected to the North Caucasus via important passes (such as the passes of Klukhor, of Marukh, of Sanchar) in the gorges of the Abkhazian hinterland. Chronologically, the work deals with the period of the fourth to the XIV centuries. The author has gathered an impressive amount of iconographic material, most of it unpublished. Almost all the monuments that have come down to us are in a state of ruins, and most of these have been excavated. Only a few buildings have retained walls to the original height, and these buildings have usually been rebuilt, as for instance the basilicas of Tsandripsh and the aisleless church in Gagra. Well-preserved (including the dome) is the large church in Dranda. Apart from church ruins, the author separately examines architectural decoration. Some elements of church interiors were imported from Byzantine workshops on the island of Prokonessos. Local sculptors who used limestone or less frequently sandstone for reliefs and in some cases capitals were also involved. Floor mosaics are found uniquely in the basilica of Pityous. ISBN 9788862400107.‎ ‎The three volumes - Capernaum VI, Capernaum VII, and Capernaum VIII - are intertextual and present the description (Capernaum VI), illustrated documentation (Capernaum VII) and photographic documentation (Capernaum VIII) for the ceramics collected on the Franciscan property in Capernaum (Israel) over the course of twenty-three archaeological digs. For this project, the author took part as Assistant to the Director V. Corbo (1968 ? 1986) and then as his successor (2000 ? 2003), and the dates of the material range from the early Bronze Age to the Mamluk period (about 3200 BC to 1400 AD). In this account, the different types of terra cotta vases are presented using a uniform classification system with an alphanumeric code assigned according to type, and with references to the illustrations, photographs, descriptions, frequency, dating, contexts, and parallels. There are numerous illustrations: 10,539 of the 44,730 items recorded have been sketched to illustrate both individual type and their associations in certain stratigraphic contexts. The Ceramics Register makes cross-referencing between the three volumes easy. The author allows the figures to speak for themselves in the twenty-one tables included. For example, regarding Table XIII, one learns that terra sigillata is represented at Capernaum by a tremendous 8,387 examples. No other archaeological site in the Holy Land has furnished such a massive amount of terra sigillata, coming mostly from Africa Proconsularis (896 examples of African terra sigillata), the western coasts of Asia Minor (3,832 pieces of Phocaean terra sigillata.) and Cyprus (2,947 specimens of Cypriot terra sigillata). This flood of terra sigillata affected all of the homes in Capernaum irregardless of social class, which can be readily verified vis-a-vis the Register. Additionally, the author presents Map II to show the areas in Capernaum where terra sigillata moulds with crosses were located. Capernaum's contacts with foreign countries are not limited to the elegant terra sigillata plates primarily from the Byzantine period. An Egyptian scarab was already present as early as the Second Millennium BC. In the Persian period, characteristic amphorae from Phoenicia reached Capernaum. Plates inspired by the ceramics of Megara, amphorae with Greek inscriptions most likely from Rhodes, and ciboria from Corinth are recorded in the Hellenistic and Roman periods. The involvement with distant cultures does not end with the Arab period; even in the Mamluk period, glazed ceramics inspired by faraway China were found in Capernaum. Beyond these lively contacts with foreign places, facilitated by Capernaum's position on the via maris, the lengthy excavations at Capernaum have yielded other results that are just as important to ceramologists interested in the region's 'common' pottery. The chapter is followed by a in-depth analysis of the more than 1400 isolated coin finds with special attention paid to the provenance and the quantitative distribution of the coins by period - from the Seleucids to the Mamluks. By doing so for each of the periods Callegher moves beyond merely cataloging site coins used for dating excavated strata into the more fascinating facets of coin circulation and monetary history. In particular his minute description of the various categories of coins circulating in Capernaum during Roman and Byzantine rule (c. 90% of the total number of isolated coin found at the site) provide new and original insight into the use of money in Eastern Galilee during this period. Finally, the large number of references to the latest regional coin studies and sites and a copious bibliography turns Callegher's study into a vital tool for both historians and numismatists dealing with the Roman and Byzantine East. In particolare la descrizione minuziosa dei vari generi di monete in circolazione a Cafarnao durante i periodi Romano e Bizantino (circa il 90% del nunero totale dei ritrovamenti isolati) offre un nuovo e originale punto di vista sull?uso delle monete nella Galilea orientale in questo contesto temporale.
