‎Summary The spurs of horse riders have long been acknowledged as an important item of grave furniture in the Late Roman and Migration period burials of Poland, a reflection of the high social position held by the deceased. Yet while spurs have been studied at a general level, and typo-chronological studies have been conducted on spurs found in southern and central Poland, no such research has so far been conducted on finds from the West Balt Circle, in north-eastern Poland. This volume is an attempt to rectify the situation by offering a thorough examination of finds attributed to the Bogaczewo and Sudovian Cultures. The author here offers a comprehensive assessment of surviving materials from the period, many of which are scattered through museums across Europe, together with an in-depth analysis of archival sources (included among them the private inventories of archaeologists working in the pre-war period) in order to reconstruct our understanding of the furnishings and data relating to spurs. ‎Summary The Decapolis city of Jerash has long attracted attention from travellers and scholars, due both to the longevity of the site and the remarkable finds uncovered during successive phases of excavation that have taken place from 1902 onwards. ‎Hoards are among the most enigmatic of archaeological finds. The term ?hoard? itself has been applied to different assemblages across space and time, from the Stone Age into the modern era, with an inventory that typically includes artefacts made of valuable raw materials, to which significant symbolic meanings can also be assigned. Archaeologists have been trying to understand this phenomenon for much of the last century, sometimes emphasizing the universal nature of hoards, but more typically focusing on specific regions, chronologies, and finds. They have, for the most part, used results derived from typolo-chronological methods. Contemporary archaeology has, however, developed a broad spectrum of paradigms and methods, and hoardresearch in the twenty-first century draws on an increasingly wide range of approaches. This volume presents examples of research that make use of these multi-faceted approaches through a focus on European hoards of metal objects dating to the Bronze and Iron Ages. The contributors to this volume make use of diverse methods, among them archaeometallurgical analyses, studies of use- and production-wear, destruction patterns, and landscape archaeology, but together, their common denominator is the search for a methodological toolkit that will allow researchers to better understand the phenomenon of hoard-deposition more broadly.‎

‎Offrande de très grand prix faite aux dieux par les plus riches des cités grecques, un Trésor était dans l'Antiquité un petit édifice construit avec soin et richement sculpté, destiné à recevoir et entreposer des objets précieux, comme son nom grec, "Thesauros", le rappelle. Cette offrande des Massaliètes à Delphes confirme l?importance exceptionnelle de la cité phocéenne à la fin de l?époque archaïque, une cité rapidement enrichie par l'industrie et le commerce international. Sa prospérité nouvelle s'affichait ainsi, de manière ostentatoire, aux yeux de tous. Avec le concours décisif de l'Ecole française d'Athènes et de l'Ephorie de Delphes, ce ne sont pas moins en effet de trente-quatre figures sculptées ou éléments d'architecture du Trésor des Marseillais qui ont traversé la Méditerranée. Eléments majeurs de l'édifice et de sa décoration sculptée, ces objets, autant de "trésors nationaux" helléniques n'étaient jusqu'à présent jamais sortis du territoire grec. Il retrouvent, à l'occasion de cet événement exceptionnel que représente l'élection par l'Union européenne de Marseille comme "Capitale européenne de la culture 2013", la cité qui les avaient consacrés à la déesse guerrière, il y a un peu plus de deux mille cinq cents ans. Trésors en soi, il convenait de redonner à ces marbres finement ciselés et peints toute leur place dans l'édifice à l'occasion de ce prêt prestigieux. Archéologues, historiens, architectes et informaticiens, Français et Grecs, ont apporté leur concours à la restitution virtuelle du Trésor et de son riche décor sculpté. Les uns et les autres ont collaboré, sur place, à Delphes, sur le terrain et au plus près des oeuvres, puis dans leurs laboratoires respectifs, à Marseille et Aix-en-Provence. Dans cette entreprise collective, ils ont conçu et développé à cette occasion les outils de modélisation 3D les plus performants afin de restituer, au plus près de la réalité antique, formes, figures et couleurs d'un chef- d'oeuvre de la sculpture monumentale en haut relief de la fin de l'archaïsme grec.‎

‎Het verborgen Mechelen komt in dit boek aan de oppervlakte aan de hand van foto?s van historische kelders en andere ondergrondse ruimten waar onze stad zo rijk aan is. Mechelen heeft, als middeleeuwse stad, tientallen gebouwen die ontstonden vanaf de 14de eeuw. De eeuw waarin de eerste stenen gebouwen verschenen. Eerder werden de huizen voornamelijk in hout opgetrokken. Het bouwen met stenen, voornamelijk baksteen, zandsteen en arduin, vergde omwille van het gewicht sterke funderingen. Te samen ontstonden ook de kelders waarvan er op heden nog heel wat bestaan. De kelders in dit boek bevinden zich allen ?intra muros?, binnen de stadmuren van weleer. Naast historische kelders schenkt het boek aandacht aan andere ondergrondse ruimten zoals tunnels. Tunnels die binnen enkele jaren voorgoed zullen verdwijnen en daarom in dit boek als herinnering vermeld worden. Verder wordt aandacht gegeven aan de grootste bouwwerf die Mechelen ooit gekend heeft, de nieuwe spoor- en wegverbinding over 2,5 km, die voor een groot deel ondergronds loopt.‎

‎This book is the initial publication in a four-volume series on the collection of cuneiform tablets and inscriptions in the Metropolitan Museum's Department of Ancient Near Eastern Art. It is a scholarly study of objects acquired largely during the 1880s, when the Metropolitan became the first American museum to acquire a substantial number of cuneiform texts. Today the Museum's collection totals more than five hundred texts and fragments; the publication of these volumes will make these texts available in a manner that will instruct and inform as wide an audience as possible. Cuneiform Texts in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Volume I: Tablets, Cones, and Bricks of the Third and Second Millennia B.C. presents 120 commercial texts, legal texts, and letters, along with cones and bricks, from ancient Mesopotamia. This material is offered in both transliteration and translation, with drawings and selected photographs of the tablets as well as descriptions, drawings, and photographs of the seal impressions appearing on them. Features of special interest in this volume include the presentation of Sumerian ledger-account translations in modern accounting formats; allocations for the royal family of the Sumerian king Sulgi of the Third Dynasty of Ur; an Old Babylonian military confrontation with the Kassites, as disclosed in correspondence; Old Assyrian correspondence involving smuggling, moth-eaten textile shipments, legal testimony, and a caravan report presented in both textual translation and modern-ledger format; as well as new collations and translations of Amarna-period royal correspondence. Ira Spar is the editor of the Museum's cuneiform-tablet project, with a distinguished international group of collaborators assisting in the preparation of the texts. Each scholar has prepared manuscripts within his respective field of expertise, and hand copies of the tablets and seal inscriptions have been drawn by Dr. Spar. The inclusion in this volume of a comprehensive catalogue of the seal impressions on the tablets and cases illustrates the Museum's interest in publishing these works of art in their original context. The seal impressions are presented with brief commentary together with photographs and scale drawings prepared by Holly Pittman, Associate Curator in the Department of Ancient Near Eastern Art at the Metropolitan Museum. The second volume of this series will contain the literary and scholastic texts from the second millennium B.C. to the first century A.D.; the third volume will present the administrative, commercial, and legal tablets from the first millennium B.C. A final short volume will contain all cuneiform inscriptions found on objects in the Museum's collections.‎

Il fallait donc s?interroger sur la naissance et le développement de la notion même de sculpture hellénistique en abordant la question par l?histoire de la réception pour retrouver la fraîcheur de l?homme de la Renaissance qui découvrait des antiques à Rome dont il avait des notions par les textes antiques et dont la vision modèle encore notre propre perception de l?art hellénistique. On saisit l?importance d?analyser aussi le regard romain sur l?art hellénistique, qui est tributaire d?écrits d?histoire de l?art plus anciens, dont ne subsistent que des bribes : l?art hellénistique c?était la nouveauté, la nature, la spontanéité, la vérité, nous disent ces textes. Et les images le confirment tout en appelant un traitement distinct de l?analyse littéraire. Il faut donc se plonger dans une documentation elle-même en partie renouvelée par des découvertes récentes pour cerner au plus près les caractères d?un art qui prône la variété et qui veut toucher l?individu. Pour comprendre ces sculptures et cerner leur action il faut les mettre en contexte, bien concrètement autant que possible : c?est ainsi que l?étude des fonctions et des thèmes amène à saisir les mécanismes du dynamisme artistique et les ressorts de l?émotion.‎

‎Summary The Santa Maria Antiqua Complex in the Forum in Rome was probably established at the foot of the Palatine Hill in the 6th century. Over the following 600 years it was decorated with a unique series of frescoes bearing evidence of imperial, papal and monastic influences. Abandoned in the 9th century, limited use probably continued up to the 11th century. By the 17th century the complex was completely buried under the rising floor of the Forum. Excavations in 1900 exposed a largely intact complex containing hundreds of 6th - 11th century frescoes, in some places over four layers deep and a unique Chapel of Medical Saints which suggests this was also an incubation site. The English Press hailed the site as the 'Sistine Chapel of the Ninth century'. Lavish illustrations of these frescoes, following recent restoration, make this book an indispensible resource, not only for those working on the church but also for those interested in contemporaneous material in medieval sites especially in Rome, Europe and Byzantium. This monograph contains the proceedings of an International Conference held at the British School at Rome on 4-6 December, 2013. It reports results of the major project of preservation and research led by the Soprintendenza and carried out over the last 12 years on the fabric of the church, its frescoes, floor, wall and ceiling mosaics, its drainage and infrastructure. Much of the restoration was funded by the World Monuments Fund. The conference also marked the 75th anniversary of the death of Gordon Rushforth, the first Director of the British School at Rome and the author of one of the earliest key papers on the S. Maria Antiqua site.
