ISBN 9782503991238.‎ ‎Royal stelae are one of the most important sources for reconstructing the history of pharaonic Egypt. They document a variety of royal actions: military campaigns; construction work in temples; donations of statues and barques to temples; gifts of cult instruments and other offerings. During the 18th Dynasty they play an increasingly significant role in the demonstration of royal power. Hitherto, a strictly historical approach has determined how these monuments are viewed by scholars and a fresh approach is now needed, asking such questions as: for what purpose was a stela erected? where? by whom? and what was the nature of its visual appearance? Such an investigation has to be based on the premise that royal stelae are official monuments which reflect how pharaoh wished to present himself. The stelae combine picture and text in one monument which also draws its meaning from the architectural context in which it stands. An important question is to determine the target group for whom the stelae were intended. Some were clearly intended to be read by or declaimed to a large audience while others were addressed primarily to the gods. This book is intended to serve as a source book and the main part consists of the documentation of each stela followed by an analysis of the totality of the stelae. The study includes unknown or poorly published monuments and offers new readings and observations based on an examination of the original monuments. Beside the most familiar "historical" stelae, the book also deals with a group of small stelae which have been of peripheral interest until now because of their short or even missing texts. The book pulls all the information together in trying to establish the evolution, meaning and function of royal stelae in the 18th Dynasty before the Aton religion took over. The study demonstrates that the stelae were embedded in the king's ritual activity. Die Inschriften enthalten eine der wichtigsten Versionen des sogenannten Stundenrituals, eine umfangreiche Ausgabe des Totenbuchs der 26.Dyn. und verschiedene Auszuge von Pyramidentexten. Von der originalen Grabausstattung blieben Reste eines Holzsarges, von Uschebtis, Kanopen, und eines Opferstanders erhalten. Der grosste Teil der Funde betrifft Nachbestattungen bis in die romische Zeit, aber auch Streufunde, die aus anderen Teilen der Nekropole nach TT 196 verschleppt wurden. Ein alteres Grab unter dem Treppenraum aus der Zweiten Zwischenzeit enthielt einen vergoldeten Holzsarg und eine vergoldete Kanopenkiste. Der Abraumschutt vom benachbarten Grab TT 192 des Cheruef, auf dem der Dritte Hof des Grabes TT 196 ruht, verbarg einen vollstandigen Frauensarg mit Mumie aus der 22.Dyn. An ihr wurde im Jahre 2000 eine Computertomographie in Luxor durchgefuhrt. ISBN 9782503526775.‎ ‎Questo volume del Corpus della pittura medievale a Roma studia un periodo storico a forti contrasti. La storia inizia infatti dagli anni del pontificato di Innocenzo III: papa autoritario, di lucida visione teocratica e di vasti disegni politici, che proclama l'universalita della Chiesa e al tempo stesso bada a consolidare il suo potere temporale, fortificando i territori circostanti a Roma, estendendo l'autorita pontificia sulle regioni limitrofe, facendo insomma dello Stato della Chiesa uno stato agguerrito e capace di fronteggiare i pericoli e gli attacchi anche militari. Non meraviglia, in questo quadro ideologico e politico, che Innocenzo III sia anche il papa che mette mano ai piu grandi edifici della citta sacra, Roma, per rifarli e rammodernarli e in questo modo presentare l'immagine di una chiesa tradizionale, ma attuale e rinnovata. Tramite i cantieri innocenziani, Roma viene toccata da una potente ondata bizantineggiante, originata dal risalire degli artisti che erano stati attivi nei cantieri normanni di Palermo e Monreale, e che rimasti senza lavoro per la fine della potenza normanna in Sicilia e Italia meridionale vanno a cercarne la dove l'attivita e piu intensa, e quindi specialmente a Roma. Subito dopo pero le cose cambiano, e la cultura dell'Europa gotica comincia a premere anche alle porte della Citta per definizione piu tradizionalista di tutte. Nei decenni centrali del Duecento una vera e propria invasione di temi e iconografie rinnovate si verifica, negli edifici della citta che li hanno conservati e che sono stati riscoperti anche molto recentemente: il caso del grande ciclo ad affresco nel salone gotico dei Santi Quattro Coronati e emblematico, centinaia di metri quadri di splendida pittura meravigliosamente conservata, ritrovati e rimessi in luce da pochi anni, testimonianza di una cultura pittorica modernissima e raffinata. Il ciclo dei Santi Quattro, insieme ad altri ritrovamenti ugualmente recenti ma di minore entita come ad esempio quello nel convento di San Clemente mette in luce un momento della vita della Roma medievale, fino ad ora considerato 'vuoto' e privo di testimonianze artistiche; e segnala con grande evidenza la ricchezza e la modernita della pittura che si faceva a Roma, nelle cerchie dei papi, dei cardinali, nei loro palazzi fortificati e nelle loro chiese, anche quando il papa, con la curia, era esule e rifugiato altrove, anche quando la citta di Roma viene a lungo abbandonata dalla corte pontificia che preferisce sedi e palazzi come quelli di Viterbo o di Orvieto, piu lontani dalla minaccia federiciana. Mette in luce, anche, quanto 'gotica' sia stata la tradizionalissima cerchia dei papi: proprio perche la corte pontificia era, appunto, una corte, attorno a papi che nei decenni centrali del Duecento sono spesso francesi, in contatto con la cultura d'oltralpe, e si fanno tramite dell'arrivo di oggetti e di testimonianze del gusto nordico. Il volume si chiude con gli avvenimenti di un pontificato quello di Nicolo III Orsini che dura pochi anni, dal 1277 al 1280, ma che rappresenta un nuovo momento di importanza fondamentale per la storia della cultura e dell'arte a Roma. A differenza di molti suoi immediati predecessori, Nicolo Orsini non e francese, non e forestiero: e romano, di nobile famiglia, e il programma del suo regno e tutto volto a riprendere in mano la Citta, a riconsiderarne le tradizioni, a riproporre con forza l'immagine di un'autorita pontificia che e indissociabile dall'idea di Roma. Non molti anni fa, la riscoperta e il restauro degli affreschi del Sancta Sanctorum al Laterano che sono naturalmente compresi in questo volume - mostrarono con chiarezza a quale livello di qualita e di densita simbolica fosse arrivato questo papa, committente della cappella e della sua decorazione a mosaico e ad affresco, pur in un tempo cosi breve di regno. Die Texte sind an funf Stellen des Wadi Hilal angebracht, das von Elkab in die Ostwuste fuhrt, die meisten auf zwei freistehenden hohen Sandfelsen. Das Gros der Texte, namlich weit uber 400, stammt aus der 6. Dynastie, eine kleinere Zahl jeweils aus dem Mittleren Reich, der 2 Zwischenzeit, dem Neuen Reich und der Spatzeit bis in die romische Zeit. Die Inschriften des Alten Reichs stammen von Angehorigen der lokalen Priesterfamilien, die mit ihrem Personal zu einem Tempel in der Wuste zogen. Ein grosser Teil der genannten Personen lasst sich in zwei Abstammungslisten zu Familien zusammenstellen, und zwar uber 8 Generationen, d.h. mindestens 200 Jahre, hinweg; einige dieser Personen sind auch in den noch unpublizierten Felsgrabern von Elkab bezeugt. Die Kenntnisse uber die Prosopographie dieser Zeit erweitern sich dadurch erheblich, sowohl was die Bildung der Namen als auch deren Weitergabe in der Familie betrifft. Auch eine "Vererbung" von Priestertiteln in der Familie lasst sich beobachten. Die Barkenkapelle des Konigs Sobekhotep III. steht dabei den Stationsheiligtumern des Mittleren und Neuen Reiches im Aufbau des Bildprogrammes sehr nahe. Das Heiligtum aus der 13. Dynastie nimmt nicht nur chronologisch eine vermittelnde Stellung zwischen den Bauten des Mittleren und des fruhen Neuen Reiches ein, sondern auch bei der Entwicklung der architektonischen Massverhaltnisse und des Dekorationsprogrammes. Ausgehend von diesem Heiligtum in Elkab werden weitere Bauwerke aus der Zeit der 13. und 17. Dynastie, deren Baubestand ausreichend erhalten ist, naher betrachtet und versuchsweise rekonstruiert. Zum einen ist dies der Schrein bzw. das Heiligtum des Konigs Antef V. in Koptos aus der 17. Dynastie, fur das hier erstmals eine Rekonstruktion des Gebaudes und der Toranlagen vorgestellt wird. In gleichem Masse gilt dies fur den Month-Tempel von Medamud, in dem zahlreiche Bauteile der 13. und 17. Dynastie verbaut waren. In Medamud ist es schliesslich aufgrund des ergrabenen Grundrisses des Tempels des Mittleren Reiches und der Zweiten Zwischenzeit moglich, die einzelnen Bauteile genauer im Tempelbezirk zu plazieren und verschiedenen Bauphasen zuzuweisen.
