‎De site behoort tot de oudste kern van de stad. Oorspronkelijk was het een omwalde burcht voorzien van toegangspoorten. Hij was gelegen op het knooppunt van de mogelijk Romeinse weg Oudenburg-Aardenburg (de "Zandstraat") en de Reie. De burcht had een oppervlakte van circa 1 ha. Graaf Arnulf I (889-965) bouwde de Brugse burcht uit tot een machtscentrum met keizerlijke allures, een gebied van 1,5 ha. Van de 11de tot het einde van de 13de eeuw bevond zich aan de westzijde van het plein een van de residenties van de graven van Vlaanderen, Het Steen. Binnen de versterking werd in het noorden de burchtkerk opgetrokken, toegewijd aan Onze-Lieve-Vrouw en Sint-Donaas. Later werd het bijhorend kapittel van kanunniken gesticht. Hieraan ontleende de burcht zijn tweeledige functie: de zuidelijke helft had een civiele functie en de noordelijke helft een kerkelijke. Toen Brugge in 1559 een bisdom werd, werd de Sint-Donaaskerk een kathedraal. In de nacht van 13 op 14 februari 1967 werd op de Burg een bomaanslag gepleegd aan de poort van het gerechtshof.[1] Er vielen geen doden, maar de glas-in-loodramen van het stadhuis, het gerechtshof en de Basiliek van het Heilig Bloed werden compleet verwoest. Ondanks tientallen huiszoekingen en verhoren is de zaak nooit opgehelderd.‎

‎The site of Capernaum, where Jesus preached and performed many of his miracles and from where five of the twelve apostles, foremost Peter originated, has attracted intense archaeological and scholarly interest ever since the American scholar Edward Robinson correctly identified its ruins with the center of Jesus' Galilean ministry in 1838. There are few sites like Capernaum, possibly with the exception of Qumran, where the interplay between the Scriptures, archaeology and written sources make any publication an event that immediately transcends the standard scholarly debate. No doubt such is the present publication of Bruno Callegher dealing with the isolated coin finds accumulated from the village area of Capernaum during surveys and excavations conducted over the past hundred years. In a meticulously detailed introduction Callegher takes his reader through the history of the sites' exploration focusing on the coin finds. Here for the first time a comprehensive picture of the coin finds at Capernaum and their historical and archaeological significance is presented. The introduction is not only extremely helpful for both laymen and specialists but also presents fascinating new information about unpublished coin material in the holdings of the SBF at Jerusalem. The chapter is followed by a in-depth analysis of the more than 1400 isolated coin finds with special attention paid to the provenance and the quantitative distribution of the coins by period - from the Seleucids to the Mamluks. By doing so for each of the periods Callegher moves beyond merely cataloging site coins used for dating excavated strata into the more fascinating facets of coin circulation and monetary history. In particular his minute description of the various categories of coins circulating in Capernaum during Roman and Byzantine rule (c. 90% of the total number of isolated coin found at the site) provide new and original insight into the use of money in Eastern Galilee during this period. Finally, the large number of references to the latest regional coin studies and sites and a copious bibliography turns Callegher's study into a vital tool for both historians and numismatists dealing with the Roman and Byzantine East. ‎The Basilica of Sv. Marija Velika near Bale is, along with the early medieval Cathedral in Novi-grad, one of the most important Carolingian monuments in Istria. It is a part of a monastery complex, the remnants of which are still being excavated and researched. The church mani-fests traditional architectural forms: the origin of the three-aisled basilica with three-apsidal sanctuary with polygonal apses can be traced back to the time of Emperor Justinian, and the typology of capitals follows the famous 6th century examples from the basilica of Eufrasius in Porec, representing a variant of the type used in Constantinople and Ravenna. The hand of the stone-mason, ? The Master of Bale capitals? , was recognized also at some other Carol-ingian sites in Istria, and the products of his workshop were recognized as the first coherent pre-Romanesque sculptural opus in Istria, dated to the last quarter of the 8th century, to the time of important missionary activities in the areas under Carolingian rule. ‎Bilingual Notaries in Hellenistic Egypt. A study of Greek as a second language‎

‎In the Upper Egyptian town Pathyris nearly twenty bilingual family archives have been found, dating to the second and first centuries BCE. They contain different types of documents, but contracts play an important role. Most of the Greek contracts were written by notaries (agoranomoi), whose native language was Egyptian. This study describes the language contact situation in Hellenistic Egypt in general and in Pathyris in particular. Notarial offices and scribal families in Upper Egypt are also discussed. The main focus of the study is a thorough phonological and morpho-syntactic analysis of the Greek language of the bilingual notaries. With the help of handwriting analysis, we get close to studying idiolects. Some of the notaries had more transfer features from their first language than others. Especially a notary called Hermias used creative strategies to avoid certain Greek structures and his Greek seems to present a learner's interlanguage with first and second language structures intertwining.‎

‎The Encyclopaedic Prosopographical Lexicon of Byzantine History and Civilization (EPLBHC) is a multivolume encyclopaedic lexicon aiming to cover the whole of Byzantine prosopography for the period c. 300 to c. 1500 CE by an estimated 7000 entries on the chief personalities, families and dynasties that gave the Byzantine Empire its profile. The Lexicon makes available in an accessible way a vast array of subjects, so that the real themes of Byzantine history can shine through. It aims to spell out for ready consultation, with detailed bibliographies of sources and secondary works, what it takes to be conversant with Byzantine history and civilization. The Lexicon consists of a collaborative international project: contributions have so far been submitted by over 70 scholars of a wide range of disciplines, including byzantinists, slavicists, orientalists and medievalists, based in numerous countries including Armenia, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Cyprus, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Italy, Russia, Serbia, Montenegro, South Africa, Tunisia, Turkey and the United States of America. The Lexicon will consist of eight volumes of approx. 470 pages each. The publication programme commences in November 2007 with volume I (Aaron-Azarethes) and continue in Spring 2008 with volume II (letters B-E). The rest of the Lexicon is expected to appear in five more volumes. An eighth volume will contain the general bibliography, a cumulative index and eventual addenda et corrigenda.
