‎Summary The new monographic study of the village of Kafr 'Aqab is a contribution to broadening the field of research into the western part of the Limestone Massif in Northern Syria which, until now, had been the subject of only limited interest. The ruins of the site are mainly spread out over a vast rocky headland which is strategically situated at the northern extremity of the gebel Wastani near the Orontes valley in the inland region of Antioch. These ruins reveal the existence of an ancient village with over 80 homes, various communal constructions, a monastery, two ecclesiastic complexes and a fortified building. The study is based on a detailed analysis of surface ruins and has enabled the evolution of the village to be precisely determined from its first phase of occupation between the IInd and IIIrd century until it was abandoned during the medieval period. Most of the constructions date from the Roman and Proto-Byzantine periods. Each architectural group (houses, tombs, churches, agricultural buildings, etc.) is studied separately then resituated in the context of the village and the region thus enabling the author to determine this peasant community's economic, demographic, social and religious history. Mechanisms linked to the growth of the locality are examined in the light of strategies implemented in the appropriation and enhancement of the surrounding land such as controlling water and the diversification of crops which reveals the inhabitants' extraordinary capacity to adapt to their natural environment. Discussion also covers the question of the interactions between the villagers and their relationships with other towns. Kafr ?Aq?b also owed its prosperity to the road network which was ingeniously woven between towns as well as to its proximity to major urban areas in Antioche and Apamea. The ruins reveal this highly favourable location for trade and the circulation of various cultural and artistic movements. Finally, numerous archaeological signs allow the study of the occupation of the village after it was invaded by VIIth century Arab conquerors. The author thus aims to reconstruct the history of this ancient site following a long and fascinating field study. Chaque groupe architectural (maisons, tombeaux, glises, locaux agricoles, etc.) tudi part, puis replacer dans son contexte villageois et r gional, est l'occasion pour l'auteur de pr ciser l'histoire conomique, d mographique, sociale, et religieuse de cette communaut paysanne. Les m canismes propres la croissance de la localit sont aussi examin s au prisme des strat gies mises en oeuvre dans l'appropriation et la valorisation du terroir, tels que la ma trise des ressources en eau et la diversification des cultures qui r v lent l'extraordinaire capacit d'adaptation des hommes leur environnement naturel. Les changes sont galement l'occasion d'aborder la question des interactions entre villageois et des relations entretenues par ces derniers avec les villes. Kafr 'Aqab doit aussi sa prosp rit au r seau routier savamment tiss entre les agglom rations ainsi qu' la proximit des grands centres urbains d'Antioche et d'Apam e. Les vestiges t moignent en effet de cette situation privil gi e, favorable au commerce et la circulation de divers courants culturels et artistiques. ‎Olynthus, an ancient city in northern Greece, was preserved in an exceptionally complete state after its abrupt sacking by Phillip II of Macedon in 348 B.C., and excavations in the 1920s and 1930s uncovered more than a hundred houses and their contents. In this book Nicholas Cahill analyzes the results of the excavations to reconstruct the daily lives of the ancient Greeks, the organization of their public and domestic space, and the economic and social patterns in the city. Cahill compares the realities of daily life as revealed by the archaeological remains with theories of ideal social and household organization espoused by ancient Greek authors. Describing the enormous variety of domestic arrangements, he examines patterns and differences in the design of houses, in the occupations of owners, and in the articulations between household and urban economies, the value of land, and other aspects of ancient life throughout the city. He thus challenges the traditional view that the Greeks had one standard household model and approach to city planning. He shows how the Greeks reconciled conflicting demands of ideal and practice, for instance between egalitarianism and social inequality or between the normative roles of men and women and roles demanded by economic necessities. The book, which is extensively illustrated with plans and photographs, is supported by a Web site containing a database of the architecture and finds from the excavations linked to plans of the site.
