ISBN: 978-960-8145-93-1.

The author's interest in Thermos goes back to the time when he served as Ephor of Antiquities for Achaia and Aitoloakarnania 1976-1983. It was his obligation to deal with archaeological matters of that site such as the arrangement of the agora. Thus when in 1983 at the request of the Archaeological Society in Athens he undertook the continuation of the excavation of Thermos which had been conducted by Rhomaios until 1932 he began with the agora. Yet the burning archaeological questions of Thermos had mainly to do with the monuments and with the stratigraphical sequence below the horizon of the early archaic temples in the context of the prehistoric settlement with Megaron A the establishment of the first centuries after the disintegration of the Mycenaean world Megaron Β with its hypothetical colonnade and the ash altar. In archaeological circles indeed the prevailing idea was that those questions which had already been raised again in the past by Drerup Wesenberg Schmaltz Coulson Mallwitz and others before them should indeed be reexamined. Much time had passed moreover since the first revealing researches of the two succesive excavators George Soteriades and K.A. Romaios 1897-1916. The present monograph translated in Εnglish by Miriam Caskey is a condensed but in some places also revised and supplemented edition of the greek publication entitled "Thermos. Studies in Girls' Transitions - Aspects of the Arkteia and Age Representation in Attic Iconography

In English. Soft cover 24 cm 160 pp. 8 b/w plates. The central focus of this book is a systematic enquiry into the age of the ἄÏκτοι the young girls who served Artemis as "bears" at her sanctuaries at Brauron and Mounichia an enquiry which is part of a larger and long-term investigation into the institution of the arkteia and related ritual institutions and myths. The investigation into the age of the bears radiates outwards to consider some fundamental questions pertaining to the reading of ancient Greek images as well as to ancient perceptions of girlhood and womanhood. lt is conducted within the wider framework of a thorough and radical reexamination of the whole question of how the age of children girls and young women is represented in classical greek iconography.
Kardamitsa paperback

Masterpieces of Ancient Greek Sculpture
Melissa 2005. Brand new. Clothjacket 25X34 cm 280 pp. 232 photos 2250 g. ISBN-10: 960-204-264-8. Ancient Greek sculpture a par excellence anthropomorphic art constitutes one of the most important chapters in human expression of all time. Each period approaches it with its own cultural armory and its own "eyes". For modern man sculptures at least until the end of the Classical period adorned "loci sancti" places of worship and cemeteries. They were images of gods heroes mythical beings and the dead. This book aspires to enhance the "beauty" of ancient Greek sculpture through choice works from museums in Greece Europe and the United States of America. Brief descriptions and comments bring the reader into contact with the milieu -geographical historical social and religious- in which this art was created and which contributed to its development. The illustrations adopt a different a selective approach which consciously avoids the whole and focuses on details. Details that reveal particular facets of the sculptural creation and reflect the "eye" of two exceptionally talented Greek photographers Elias Eliadis and Socrates Mavrommatis. Thus this "history" of ancient Greek sculpture functions as a visual quest whose goal is to breath life into soulless museum exhibits. Melissa, 2005 hardcover

Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum: Greece - Fasc. 8: Athens National Museum: Attic and Atticizing Amphorae of the Protogeometric and Geometric Periods

In English. Hard cover 25X33 cm 110 pp. 54 drawings 110 plates; weight 1820 gr.

This CVA fascicule includes seventy-eight Attic and five Atticizing amphorae dating to the period from Sub-Mycenaean to Late Geometric. They represent the great majority of the Attic and Atticizing amphorae of that period kept in the National Archeological Museum in Athens. Amporae from published excavations e.g. the Nea Ionia vases and those included in a previous CVA volume e.g. the monumental belly handed amphora inv. no. 804 were systematically excluded from this volume. Emphasis has been given to the unpublished Attic amphorae and sixty-three vases are presented here for the first time. Most of the other remaining twenty amphorae have been widely mentioned in discussions of Attic Geometric vase painting as significant pieces for the evolution of the style; but in practice they are poorly known and none of them has ever been fully published. Some of them are known from a sort report or a bad photograph sometimes limited to a simple detail of the vase others have been mentioned as parallels in discussions of workshops and styles.

.

.

==============================================================

IMPORTANT: The price does NOT include the shipping cost which depends on actual weight and destination. The Linear B - A NEW OUTLOOK

Three volumes 24 cm 190188248 pp. ill. "Linear B a New Outlook" by Nicholas A. Massouridis is the product of thirty years’ study of the phonetic values of the signs of the Linear B script. Proof that Massouridis’s method is correct was provided by the fact that the values have been applied for ten years by his son Pandelis Massouridis who has worked on the texts of tablets from Pylos and Knossos and have also been applied for the first time to the reading of dedications and Linear A tablets from Ayia Triada. Readers will be enchanted by the wonderful world and descriptive wealth of the composite words of the Greek language found in the tablets as this language evolved towards the homeric dialect.

.

.

==============================================================

IMPORTANT: The price does NOT include the shipping cost which depends on actual weight and destination.
