From the libraries of R Gwinn Vivian and France V Scholes. Carnegie Institution of Washington Publication number 471. First edition.

The present paper is the attempt to gather together and so far as possible to analyze the available information on a form of architecture that is consider relatively rare in the region under consideration. The study is an outgrowth of work in connection with two round buildings at the ruins of Chichen Itza in Yucatan so that it will aid in the understanding of these structures as well as other buildings of a similar type.

Vivian is a former Curator of Archaeology at the Arizona State Museum University of Arizona Tucson. He has carried out research in Chaco Canyon for more than forty years. He holds a B.A. and M.A. from the University of New Mexico and a Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Arizona.

France Vinton Scholes 1897–1979 was an American scholar and historian noted for his research on the history of New Spain especially Spanish Yucatan and Southwestern United States. Much of his research was conducted in the General Archive of the Indies in Seville Spain where he was sent in 1935 by the Carnegie Institute of Washington DC as part of a larger study on the Yucatan which was led by Alfred Kidder. In 1940 the study on Yucatan lost financial support from the Carnegie Institute and much of the literature and research was transferred over to the Library of Congress of the United States in the city of Washington. He served for over sixty years in academia specializing in the field of historical research. He studied at Harvard University. He lectured at Radcliffe College; at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Colorado College. After working for the Carnegie Institute he taught at the University of New Mexico. ‎Matos Moctezuma, Eduardo (1940- )‎

‎La Piedra del Sol: Calendario Azteca‎

‎137 pages unpaginated with black and white and color plates facsimiles 6 plastic calender overlays appendix bibliography and index. Square folio 12" x 12" bound in grey cloth with silver lettering to spine and blind stamped with title in rectangular box to cover. Photographs by Salvador Guil'liem Arroyo. Forewords by Carols Salinas de Gortari and Maria Terresa Franco. First edition.Momentous work on the Aztec calendar stone with new interpretations by this leading scholar on the subject. Included is a review of the most relevant studies about the symbols and iconography contained in the Piedra del Sol and a comparison of it's history with that of La Coatlicue another important monolith of the Mexican culture that was also unearthed in 1790.The Aztec calendar stone is a large monolithic sculpture that was excavated in the Zócalo the main square of Mexico City on December 17 1790. It was discovered while Mexico City Cathedral was being repaired. The stone is approximately 12 feet across and weighs approximately 24 tons. Despite being known as a "calendar stone" modern archaeologists such as those at the National Anthropology Museum in Mexico City where the stone is housed believe it is more likely to have been used primarily as a ceremonial basin or ritual altar for gladiatorial sacrifices than as an astrological or astronomical reference.Condition:Jacket rubbed at spine ends else a near fine copy in like jacket. ‎Rio, Antonio del (1745-1789)‎

‎Estampas de Palenque. Biblioteca del Palacio Real & Real Academia de la Historia Madrid Facsimile Manuscript report to Guatemalan Governor José Estachería‎

‎16 facsimile hand written pages with diagrams and three fold out diagrams of Palenque. Folio 12 1/2" x 8 1/2" bound in velum with black label and gilt lettering to cover. Testimonio's Tabula Americae. Limited to 980 copies of which this is 169. Spanish artillery Captain Antonio del Río's ca. 1745-ca. 1789 discovery of tangible evidence of an amazingly rich Maya past and this printed report were the beginning of the study of this truly lost civilization. In May 1786 upon the order of the Spanish Crown Governor and Brigadier General of the Royal Audencia of Guatemala Don José Estachería sent Río to Chiapas to investigate rumors of an ancient city near Santo Domingo del Palenque and determine the origin of its inhabitants. Rio was preceded by other visitors to Palenque the most recent being two brief forays by José Antonio Calderón a local official and Spanish architect Antonio Bernasconi whose sparse observations prompted the order for the full-scale investigation by Río. The Spanish captain made up for his lack of antiquarian training with his zeal hiring seventy-nine Maya locals to assault with crowbars and axes the abandoned tree-engulfed seventh-century city of Palenque. In his report Río describes and comments on the hieroglyphs he saw. Río sent his manuscript report to Guatemalan Governor José Estachería and it was preserved in Madrid. Almendáriz's original drawings were recently found in a private European collection and published: Estampas de Palenque not included here Madrid: Testimonio 1993. After the end of the Napoleonic Wars the author's manuscript and Waldeck's drawings re-emerged in a still mysterious manner to be published in England. Publisher Henry Berthoud bought the manuscript from a mysterious Dr. McQuy McQueen in Jamaica at the end of April 1822. Capitalizing on public interest in American indigenous cultures as well as in Romantic ruins Berthoud published Rio's work in hopes of a popular bestseller which might otherwise have been lost.Condition:A Fine copy. ‎The Archaeological Ceramics of Becan Campeche Mexico‎

‎xiv190 pages with figures charts maps and appendices. Small quarto 10 1/2" x 7 3/4" bound in original publisher's green wrappers. Middle American Research Institute Publication number 43. First edition.

The 1969-71 National Geographic society-Tulane University project was organized specifically to deal with two problems. The first concerned the precise definition of the Rio Bec architectural style and its proper chronological placement. The second involved the determination of the chronological and cultural relationships existing among the Rio Bec Chenes and Puuc sub-regions. Several secondary results were expected as well. These included the construction of an independent chronological framework for the Rio Bec zone; the establishment of a firm chronological and typological bridge between the isolated culture sequences of northwestern Yucatan and the southern Maya lowlands; and the dating of the massive defensive network at Becan suspected to be of either Late or Terminal Classic age. Central to the solution of any of these problems was the establishment of a local ceramic sequence for the Rio Bec sub-region.

Condition:

Light edge wear else a near fine copy. From the Preface: "This study is presented for the purpose of clarifying and adding to the analyses which began in 1939. The results of earlier work were published in 1942. At this time the researches were somewhat hampered by the lack of precedent as to method. Some progress was made but obviously and perforce much was left undone. Therefore when a nearby deep excavation in the Back Bay region was opened for the purpose of constructing a building for the John Hancock Life Insurance Company we seized the opportunity to continue the work. Here we have the pleasure presenting a considerable quantity of new data." Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 4 lbs 3 oz. Category: Archaeology; Geology; Books; Science & Technology. Both volumes have unopened pages light shelf wear; else clean and sound. Text is in French. DNB: "In 1926 Philby settled in Jiddah Saudi Arabia founded a trading company Sharqieh Ltd and became a close friend and an unofficial adviser of Ibn Sa'ud. Business exploration writing and Ibn Sa'ud's councils were henceforth the pattern of his life. Commerce however was only his bread and butter: his true interest was exploration. Over the next thirty years he made a series of remarkable journeys of which the greatest was his crossing of the 'empty quarter' in 1932. On these journeys he travelled by camel and later by car. By day he collected place names temperatures compass bearings barometric pressures rocks fossils flora and fauna and ancient inscriptions. At night he wrote them up in his diaries squatting in the sand by lamplight and hiding his work from his suspicious Arab escort. These journeys and the many books articles and lectures in which he described them are a monument to his scholarship industry and endurance and won him high honour with the Royal Geographical Society the British Museum Kew Gardens and academic societies all over the world."
