Bound, 287pp. illustr. color. Formaat A4, vierkleurendruk, fine condition. vol.5 De dubbele waterput uit het laat-Romeinse castellum van Oudenburg (prov. West-Vlaanderen): tafonomie, chronologie en interpretatie (Sofie Vanhoutte et al.). Tijdens archeologisch onderzoek van het Romeinse castellum van Oudenburg, door een team onder leiding van VIOE-archeoloog Sofie Vanhoutte (zie ook Relicta 3), kwam een heel opmerkelijke structuur aan het licht: een goed bewaarde ?dubbele? waterput. Dubbel, omdat hij bestaat uit twee vierkante houten bekistingen. De eerste werd gevormd door een constructie van ongeveer 3 bij 3 meter. Later raakte die in onbruik en plaatste men een nieuwe, kleinere bekisting midden in de oude. De vulling van de ruimte tussen beide bekistingen bleek te bestaan uit intentioneel aangelegde lagen van zand, klei en goed bewaard mos. Nadat de kampbewoners ook de tweede waterput hadden opgegeven, gebruikten ze hem nog om afval in te deponeren. De merkwaardige dubbele constructie en haar inhoud werden onderzocht door een internationaal en interdisciplinair team. Met dit uitvoerige artikel worden de resultaten van dat onderzoek op zeer gedetailleerde wijze bekendgemaakt. Een interessante plantenlijst uit 1791 van de Engelse tuinen van kasteel Hex (Heers, Heks, prov. Limburg): een historisch-botanische en cultuurhistorische analyse (Paul Van den Bremt). In het huisarchief van het kasteel van Hex werd een plantenlijst van de verdwenen Engelse tuinen aangetroffen. Het bleek een vrij recente transcriptie te zijn van een document uit 1791. De planten, afkomstig uit alle windstreken, staan erin vermeld met hun toenmalige wetenschappelijke naam en hun Franse soortnaam. In dit artikel bespreekt VIOE-erfgoedonderzoeker Paul Van den Bremt (VIOE) systematisch de 285 nummers, verdeeld over 240 taxa op vier verschillende plekken in de tuin. Ondanks nogal wat fouten van de anonieme kopiist slaagde hij erin de meeste plantensoorten te identificeren. Van elke soort geeft hij de huidige wetenschappelijke naam en bespreekt hij het natuurlijke verspreidingsgebied. De auteur toetste ook de samenstelling van de lijst aan verscheidene contemporaine bronnen. Ook ging hij op zoek naar de oudste vermelding van de soorten in de botanische literatuur, om te achterhalen wanneer zij in de horticultuur geintroduceerd zijn

Les progres de l'etude de l'art egyptien et des methodes scientifiques d'analyse ont engendre, chez plusieurs conservateurs, des revisions douloureuses de leurs choix anterieurs. Ils considerent aujourd'hui volontiers l'acquisition d'?uvres inauthentiques comme faisant partie des risques de leur metier. L'ouvrage est consacre a l'histoire de cette chasse aux faux et a l'identification des grands faussaires, tels que Oxan Aslanian, le "Maitre de Berlin", qui dans la premiere moitie du 20e siecle a trompe plus d'un conservateur ou collectionneur. Since the discovery of prehistoric tombs on the island of Umm an-Nar in the 1950's, funerary monuments and mortuary rites of the ancient population of the Oman peninsula have been foci of archaeological research in the region. Literally hundreds of tombs have been excavated over the past four decades, but the fact that many of these had already been looted in antiquity and/or re-used often led excavators to adopt a slipshod approach to their recording. In 1995 an extraordinary tomb in Dubai was excavated with great care by a teamfrom the University of Sydney, setting new standards for the recording of grave goods and human skeletal remains. The discovery of bone pits outside the main structure which contained cremated remains raises a whole series of questions about the nature of the third millennium mortuary rites and the origins of the practice of cremation in the Arabian peninsula. Excavations at Al Sufouh is certain to be of great interest to archaeologists, biological anthropologists and historians concerned with the prehistoric population of the area known in Mesopotamian cuneiform sources as Magan. The interaction between that population and its Iranian and Harappan neighbours is explored in this detailed study. New.

The site of Capernaum, where Jesus preached and performed many of his miracles and from where five of the twelve apostles, foremost Peter originated, has attracted intense archaeological and scholarly interest ever since the American scholar Edward Robinson correctly identified its ruins with the center of Jesus' Galilean ministry in 1838. There are few sites like Capernaum, possibly with the exception of Qumran, where the interplay between the Scriptures, archaeology and written sources make any publication an event that immediately transcends the standard scholarly debate. No doubt such is the present publication of Bruno Callegher dealing with the isolated coin finds accumulated from the village area of Capernaum during surveys and excavations conducted over the past hundred years. In a meticulously detailed introduction Callegher takes his reader through the history of the sites' exploration focusing on the coin finds. Here for the first time a comprehensive picture of the coin finds at Capernaum and their historical and archaeological significance is presented. The introduction is not only extremely helpful for both laymen and specialists but also presents fascinating new information about unpublished coin material in the holdings of the SBF at Jerusalem. The chapter is followed by a in-depth analysis of the more than 1400 isolated coin finds with special attention paid to the provenance and the quantitative distribution of the coins by period - from the Seleucids to the Mamluks. By doing so for each of the periods Callegher moves beyond merely cataloging site coins used for dating excavated strata into the more fascinating facets of coin circulation and monetary history. In particular his minute description of the various categories of coins circulating in Capernaum during Roman and Byzantine rule (c. 90% of the total number of isolated coin found at the site) provide new and original insight into the use of money in Eastern Galilee during this period. Finally, the large number of references to the latest regional coin studies and sites and a copious bibliography turns Callegher's study into a vital tool for both historians and numismatists dealing with the Roman and Byzantine East. The three volumes - Capernaum VI, Capernaum VII, and Capernaum VIII - are intertextual and present the description (Capernaum VI), illustrated documentation (Capernaum VII) and photographic documentation (Capernaum VIII) for the ceramics collected on the Franciscan property in Capernaum (Israel) over the course of twenty-three archaeological digs. For this project, the author took part as Assistant to the Director V. Corbo (1968 ? 1986) and then as his successor (2000 ? 2003), and the dates of the material range from the early Bronze Age to the Mamluk period (about 3200 BC to 1400 AD). In this account, the different types of terra cotta vases are presented using a uniform classification system with an alphanumeric code assigned according to type, and with references to the illustrations, photographs, descriptions, frequency, dating, contexts, and parallels. There are numerous illustrations: 10,539 of the 44,730 items recorded have been sketched to illustrate both individual type and their associations in certain stratigraphic contexts. The Ceramics Register makes cross-referencing between the three volumes easy. The author allows the figures to speak for themselves in the twenty-one tables included. For example, regarding Table XIII, one learns that terra sigillata is represented at Capernaum by a tremendous 8,387 examples. No other archaeological site in the Holy Land has furnished such a massive amount of terra sigillata, coming mostly from Africa Proconsularis (896 examples of African terra sigillata), the western coasts of Asia Minor (3,832 pieces of Phocaean terra sigillata.) and Cyprus (2,947 specimens of Cypriot terra sigillata). This flood of terra sigillata affected all of the homes in Capernaum irregardless of social class, which can be readily verified vis-a-vis the Register. Additionally, the author presents Map II to show the areas in Capernaum where terra sigillata moulds with crosses were located. Capernaum's contacts with foreign countries are not limited to the elegant terra sigillata plates primarily from the Byzantine period. An Egyptian scarab was already present as early as the Second Millennium BC. In the Persian period, characteristic amphorae from Phoenicia reached Capernaum. Plates inspired by the ceramics of Megara, amphorae with Greek inscriptions most likely from Rhodes, and ciboria from Corinth are recorded in the Hellenistic and Roman periods. The involvement with distant cultures does not end with the Arab period; even in the Mamluk period, glazed ceramics inspired by faraway China were found in Capernaum. Beyond these lively contacts with foreign places, facilitated by Capernaum's position on the via maris, the lengthy excavations at Capernaum have yielded other results that are just as important to ceramologists interested in the region's 'common' pottery. Il Registro della ceramica permette un facile collegamento fra i tre volumi. Molto utili sono anche le 21 Tabelle dove l?autore lascia parlare le cifre. La Pianta II indica gli ambienti di Cafarnao dove compaiono stampi di terra sigillata con croci. La ceramica testimonia dei contatti di Cafarnao con l'estero non solo attraverso i numerosissimi reperti di terra sigillata, per lo piu di epoca bizantina. Gia nel secondo millennio c'e da prendere atto della presenza di uno scarabeo egiziano. Nel periodo persiano Cafarnao e raggiunta dalle caratteristiche anfore della Fenicia. Nel periodo ellenistico e romano si registrano piatti che si ispirano alla ceramica di Megara, anfore con iscrizioni in greco provenienti probabilmente da Rodi, pissidi di Corinto. Bilingual Notaries in Hellenistic Egypt. A study of Greek as a second language
Softcover, 291pp., 21x29.5cm., nieuw. ISBN 9789065691033. In the Upper Egyptian town Pathyris nearly twenty bilingual family archives have been found, dating to the second and first centuries BCE. They contain different types of documents, but contracts play an important role. Most of the Greek contracts were written by notaries (agoranomoi), whose native language was Egyptian. This study describes the language contact situation in Hellenistic Egypt in general and in Pathyris in particular. Notarial offices and scribal families in Upper Egypt are also discussed. The main focus of the study is a thorough phonological and morpho-syntactic analysis of the Greek language of the bilingual notaries. With the help of handwriting analysis, we get close to studying idiolects. Some of the notaries had more transfer features from their first language than others. Especially a notary called Hermias used creative strategies to avoid certain Greek structures and his Greek seems to present a learner's interlanguage with first and second language structures intertwining.
