Entre le milieu du IIe siecle et la fin du IIe siecle, dans la moyenne vallee du Rhone, des artisans potiers fabriquent des vases sur lesquels sont appliques des medaillons histories. Les decors ornant ces appliques renvoient a quatre principaux themes : la religion et la mythologie, la propagande, les jeux de l'amphitheatre et du cirque et les scenes erotiques. On evalue le nombre de pieces connues a environ un millier et le sol arlesien en a procure un peu plus de 150 que ce catalogue donne a voir. L'ornementation de ces medaillons est de qualite diverse, mais quelques-uns sont de veritables petites oeuvres d'art. Certains sujets sont d'une lecture evidente, d'autres porteurs de messages particulierement sophistiques supposant une solide culture pour qui les avaient devant les yeux. On s'interroge sur cette production qui s'est developpee sur une aire geographique aussi restreinte et durant une periode limitee a environ cent cinquante ans. En verite, s'il est relativement aise d'exprimer le sens de ces decors moules, on peine encore a comprendre le role de ces vases

Waarschijnlijk zal hij meteen ook een knipoog geven. Zijn prachtig uitgegeven boekwerk over Oude maten en gewichten in Zeeland wordt ook een ?hersenkraker? genoemd. Zoveel is in elk geval duidelijk: we hebben hier niet met een spannend leesboek te maken. Wat dan wel? Boonman schreef een standaardwerk over Zeeuwse maten en gewichten van de 14e tot begin 19e eeuw, toen het metrieke stelsel in Nederland werd ingevoerd. Dat laatste met dank aan de Fransen. Zij zorgden voor uniforme standaardeenheden voor het meten van afstand, gewicht en inhoud. Voor het metrieke stelsel verschilden de gebruikte maten per land en dikwijls ook per regio en stad. De ondertitel van het boek geeft een indicatie over waar we het in Zeeland over hebben: ?het honderd Zeeuws, mudden, mijlen en munten?. Daarmee zitten we in de wereld van Bert Boonman. Hij is waterbouwkundig ingenieur en molenaar op molen De Koornbloem in Goes. Naar aanleiding van een onderzoek naar molens in Goes besloot hij de oude watergetijdemolen aan de Kleine Kade op schaal na te bouwen. Zo ontdekte hij dat er in de 17e-eeuwse bouwtekeningen sprake was van voeten en duimen, zonder dat duidelijk was welke voeten en duimen. Boonman is gaan speuren in archieven en bibliotheken, acht jaar lang. Het eerder dit jaar gepresenteerde boekwerk is het tastbare resultaat. Het boek biedt lokale geschiedenis, toegespitst op maten en gewichten. Voor wie meer wil weten over karteringen, vroegere landmaten, bouwmaten, gewichten, zoutmaten, turfmaten, meekrapmaten. De muntstelsels in Zeeland worden in een apart hoofdstuk behandeld. Boonman noemt zijn werk ook ?grensoverschrijdend?: ,,De Brabantse en Vlaamse invloed op de Zeeuwse maten en gewichten is onmiskenbaar.?? Tijdens de presentatie werd de vraag gesteld: voor wie is dit boek interessant? In elk geval voor de leden van de Gewichten en Maten Verzamelaars Vereniging. Boonman is zelf een van de leden. Wie zich verdiept in de handel voor de Napoleontische tijd, kan het boek als naslagwerk gebruiken. En natuurlijk restaurateurs die met oude bestekken werken. Kortom, wie zich wil verwonderen over vroeger heeft met dit boek een mooi uitgangspunt in handen. De Blooise roede, de Schouwse roede, het honderd, het viertel, de wage, de aam, de stoop en de pint. Art and the Sacred in Mumuyeland

In all these acephalic groups of a binary and antinomic nature, the complex va constitutes an extremely varied semantic field in which certain aspects are accentuated depending on the circumstances. Religious power is linked to the strength contained in sacred objects, of which only the elders are the guardians. Moreover, this gerontocracy relies on a system of initiatory stages which one must pass to have access to the status of 'religious leader'. Geographically isolated, the Mumuye were able to resist the attacks of the Muslim invaders, the British colonial authority and the activities of the different Christian missions for a long time. As a result the Mumuye practised woodcarving until the beginning of our century. In 1970 Philip Fry published his essay on the statuary of the Mumuye of which the analysis of the endogenous network has so far lost nothing of its value. Basing himself on in situ observations, Jan Strybol attempted to analyse the exogenous network of this woodcarving. Thus he was able to document about forty figures and some masks and additionally to identify more than twenty-five Mumuye artists as well as a specific type of sculpture as being confined to the Mumuye Kpugbong group. During and after the Biafran war, hundreds of Mumuye sculptures were collected. Based on information gathered between 1970 and 1993 the author has demonstrated that a certain number of these works are not Mumuye but must be attributed to relic groups scattered in Mumuye territory.

Er is geen document of verslag bekend, terwijl het een fors schip was met een kostbare lading en wellicht voorname passagiers. Bij toeval is het door een groep duikers gevonden.

De reliekenschat van de cisterciënzerinnenabdij van Herkenrode wordt sinds jaar en dag gelinkt aan de devotie van de Heilige Ursula en de 11.000 maagden. Abt Willem Van Rijckel, handelaar in relieken, bezorgde deze devotionele objecten aan Elisabeth van Spalbeek en de cisterciënzerinnen in de tweede helft van de 13de eeuw. Na opheffing van de abdij door de Franse overheid, eind 18de eeuw, werden de relieken overgebracht naar de kerk van de Heilige Maagd Maria van Kermt. Sinds 1992 is de collectie eigendom van de Sint-Quintinuskathedraal van Hasselt. Het Koninklijk Instituut voor het Kunstpatrimonium (KIK) voerde, met de financiële steun van de Vlaamse Overheid, in 2007-2008 een kunsthistorisch onderzoek uit naar de herkomst van deze schat. Gelijkaardige collecties in binnen- en buitenland werden door kunsthistorica Frieda Sorber bestudeerd. Dit project werd bovendien gekoppeld aan wetenschappelijke onderzoeken, zoals onder andere radiokoolstofdateringen en analyses van organische en anorganische elementen. Zowel de weefsels als de decoratieve elementen, waaronder metalen kloskant en beschreven perkament, werden onderworpen aan verschillende studies. In 2009-2010 zorgde het restauratieatelier textiel van het KIK voor een afsluitende conservatiecampagne van alle 114 reliekhouders. De resultaten van dit historisch onderzoek en bijhorende wetenschappelijke analyses worden in deze publicatie uitvoerig toegelicht. Dit boek wordt aangevuld met een online inventaris.

Bessarion (d. 18 November 1472) first made a name for himself as one of the Greek spokesmen at the Council of Ferrara-Florence in 1438-39. After becoming a cardinal, he several times entered conclaves as a serious candidate for the papacy. The library he bequeathed to the Republic of Venice, destined to become the historic core of the modern Biblioteca Marciana, is justly famous for its extraordinary collection of Greek manuscripts. Celebrated in his own time for his patronage of humanists, he was also Italy?s leading Platonist before the emergence of Marsilio Ficino. He always held in reverence his teacher in Greece, the Neoplatonist philosopher George Gemistus Pletho, and his In Calumniatorem Platonis, printed in Rome in 1469, was a pivotal text in the Plato-Aristotle controversy of the Renaissance. Nonetheless, Bessarion was a great admirer of medieval scholasticism and especially of Thomas Aquinas. 'Bessarion Scholasticus' examines Bessarion?s relationship with Latin culture as evidenced by his library, personal relations, and writings. It examines his humanist collection, his scholastic collection, his Thomism, and the circle of scholars associated with his household, called Bessarionea Academia by contemporaries. Half of 'Bessarion Scholasticus' is a catalogue raisonné of scholastic texts and manuscripts in Bessarion?s library. The volume offers the first edition of Bessarion?s autograph listing of the differences between Scotists and Thomists as well as first editions of prefaces by various authors addressed to Bessarion. In addition, the appendices include statistical tables of Bessarion?s holdings of Latin classical authors and of texts in civil and canonical law and a register of the members of his cardinalitial famiglia before he became cardinal legate in Bologna in 1450. John Monfasani is Professor at the Department of History, University at Albany ? State University of New York. His field of interest is European intellectual history, with a special interest in Renaissance intellectual and religious history.
