CLASSICAL GREECE Ancient Histories and Modern Archaeologies
Cambridge University Press. Very Good. 1995. Softcover. 0521456789 . A bit of hard creasing to wraps. ; New Directions in Archaeology; 258 pages; The archaeology of classical Greece developed in the shadow of Greek historical scholarship. Many modern developments in archaeology have been neglected and classical archaeology has become something of a backwater. The contributors to this book review the history of the field and aim to demonstrate that modern archaeological approaches can contribute to a richer understanding of Greek society. They insist that this complex literate and highly unusual society poses important questions for archaeologists of other regions. . Cambridge University Press paperback

THE CENTAUR'S SMILE The Human Animal in Early Greek Art
Yale University Press. Good in Very Good dust jacket. 2003. Hardcover. 0300101635 . Faint crease through pages. Inner hinges are strained. Front board bowed. . DJ has minor shelfwear. ; Human animals - such as centaurs satyrs sphinxes sirens and gorgons - as well as other composite creatures like Pan Triton and the Minotaur are extremely common in Greek myth literature theatre and the visual arts. Understanding the phenomenon of combining human and animal elements into composite creatures is central to our knowledge of the Greek imagination. This is an investigation of the representations of these human animals in early Greek art circa 850-450 BC. "The Centaur's Smile" discusses the oriental antecedents of these fantastic creatures examining the influence of Egyptian and Near Eastern models on the formation of Greek monsters in the early Archaic period. Essays also explore the nature and origin of horse-men centaurs and satyrs and the ways in which they are represented in early Greek art. Furthermore the book surveys the broader range of Greek composite creatures and discusses their evolving forms and changing roles and meaning. Over 100 objects - all reproduced in colour - are described and analysed in detail. Among the featured works are: reliefs and statuettes in stone bronze and terracotta; jewellery and metalwork in gold silver and electrum; engraved sealstones in rock crystal jasper and cornelian; and painted ceramic vases from Athens Corinth Rhodes Miletus Cyprus and Etruria. ; 406 pages; Oversized. . VERGINA: THE ROYAL TOMBS
Ekdotike Athenon. Very Good in Fair dust jacket. 1987. Hardcover. Scholar's name to ffep Jenifer Neils. Inscription in pen to inner cover. Front panel of DJ is torn and has been repaired from behind with cellotape. ; 244 pages; Excerpt from the prologue written by the author MANOLIS ANDRONICOS "It has been necessary to try to produce a text which will serve the needs of the specialist without ignoring those of the general reader. Such attempts are far from easy in execution and not infrequently succeed only in sacrificing academic integrity without providing adequate information for the non-specialist. It is not for me to say if I have achieved what I set out to do. Nevertheless in addition to the text there are the illustrations to the book which I believe contribute to the success of its purpose as I have defined it. A picture is always the best means - after the objects themselves - for every reader specialist or not to gain a closer idea of archaeological finds. Once I had decided to write the book I considered it essential not to limit myself to the recent impressive finds from the royal tombs but to set before the reader a synoptic but solid account of all the archaeological finds in the area. In this way its considerable interest becomes comprehensible - an area which has yielded graves containing hand-made prehistoric pottery and bronze jewellery a magnificent architectural complex dating to the last years of the fourth century the theatre of a city a small temple and a series of monumental Macedonian tombs with unique painted compositions of the classical period masterpieces of jewellery made by Greek goldsmiths of miniature sculpture and the most magnificent products of Greek metalworking. The brilliance of the latter sheds new light on the older finds so that these acquire their proper perspective. In addition to all this the finds from Vergina provide new information about Macedonian Hellenism our knowledge of which so far is based almost exclusively on literary sources emanating from Athens. It is natural that that city the only serious political rival to Macedonia should frequently distort its enemy's true face and denigrate its historical contribution to the development of Hellenism at least before the meteoric rise of Alexander the Great." . ROMAN BUILDING Materials and Techniques
B. T. Batsford. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1994. First English Edition. Hardcover. 0713471670 . Minor shelfwear. Minor bumping to 1 corner. Faint foxing. Dustjacket is protected in mylar. ; 1.18 x 10.79 x 8.5 Inches; 360 pages; Roman architecture is extraordinarily rich both in terms of the techniques and materials used and in the variety of buildings constructed many of which are still visible today. Roman Buildings places emphasis on the technical aspects of that architecture following the process of building through each stage from quarry to standing wall from tree to roof timbers. The author examines the different techniques involved in building in brick and in stone and wood and how these materials were obtained or manufactured. He also discusses interior decoration and looks at the practical aspects of water supply heating and roads. Each type of building required special tools and these are described using both surviving examples and modern parallels. The Romans constructed many spectacular feats of engineering producing magnificent monuments such as the Pantheon and Pont du Gard. This book looks at these large-scale public buildings but also at more modest homes and shops. The result is a thorough and systematic examination of Roman building with over 750 illustrations including the author's own drawings. Roman Buildings contains a foreword by Professor Michael Fulford. . B. T. Batsford hardcover

AUTOPSY IN ATHENS Recent Archaeological Research on Athens and Attica
Oxbow Books. Very Good with no dust jacket. 2015. Hardcover. 1782978569 . Slight waviness to endpapers. ; This is an exciting time to study in Athens. The rescue excavations of recent years conducted during construction of the Metro system and in preparation for the 2004 Olympic Games combined with major restoration projects and a new enthusiasm for fresh examination of old material using new techniques and applications brings new perspectives and answers on many aspects of the ancient city of Athens and life politics and religion in Attica. The 15 papers presented here contribute new findings that result from intensive first-hand examinations of the archaeological and epigraphical evidence. They illustrate how much may be gained by re-examining material from older excavations and from the methodological shift from documenting information to closer analysis and larger historical reflection. They offer a variety of perspectives on a range of issues: the ambience of the ancient city for passers-by filled with roadside shrines; techniques of architectural construction and sculpting; religious expression in Athens including cults of Asklepios and Serapis; the precise procedures for Greek sacrifice; how the borders of Attica were defined over time and details of its road-system. In presenting this volume the contributors are continuing in a long tradition of autopsy in the sense of 'personal observation' in Athens that began even in the Hellenistic period and has continued through the writings of centuries of travellers and academics to the present day. ; 11.3 X 8.8 X 0.7 inches; 224 pages .
