‎Summary Banqueting tesserae - small, moulded terracotta tokens - were used in the religious sphere of Palmyra in the first three centuries AD, conveying a vivid iconographic language that underpinned sacral banquets held in the city's sanctuaries and banqueting halls. Found today in those locations, these artefacts offer a rare glimpse into the overwhelmingly rich ritual and social lives of Palmyrene society. This book and corpus provides the first comprehensive revision to the study of banqueting tokens since the 1955 publication Recueil des tess res de Palmyre, which catalogued 1132 types. Building on that foundational work, this publication updates the original corpus with 168 newly identified tesserae types, including numerous previously unpublished examples from the Palmyra Museum and a private collection in Damascus. Each new type is presented with detailed descriptions of motifs and inscriptions. The book examines the rich iconographic and epigraphic landscape of tesserae, which feature depictions of priests, deities, animals, and symbolic imagery, while also casting light on some of the individuals who financed these feasts. ‎Summary Professor James M. Collier was an ardent lover of the history and culture of Europe and the ancient world, and a passionate collector of ancient Greek and Roman coins. Born in 1943 in Bellingham, Washington, he pursued his early academic training at Pacific Lutheran University (PLU) in Tacoma, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in History in 1965. After graduating from PLU, he worked for the Boeing Corporation as an engineer. When he was seconded to Washington, DC, on the Minuteman project, his office was located-quite fortuitously, as it turned out-across from the National Gallery of Art. For two years he spent every lunch hour at the Gallery, where he discovered his real love for art and art history. Returning to the Pacific Northwest, he attended the University of Oregon and graduated with a Master of Arts in Art History in 1970. He then pursued a PhD in Art History at the University of Michigan, completing the degree in 1975. He was appointed an Assistant Professor in the Art History Department at Auburn University (Auburn, Alabama), where he eventually was tenured and became department chair. Over the course of his academic career, he lectured widely and published on the Italian Renaissance and Early Netherlandish perspective-the subject of his doctoral dissertation, entitled "Linear Perspective in Flemish Painting and the Art of Petrus Christus and Dirk Bouts." Professor Collier was published as an artist as well. In 1987, he left his teaching post and devoted himself to his passion for painting, studying at the National Academy of Design in New York City. He and his wife, Carole Anne Menzi Collier, moved to Amsterdam in 1990 and eventually attained dual citizenship. He continued to pursue and share his love of art and ancient coinage for the rest of his life. The Collier Prize in Ancient Numismatics was first given by the American Numismatic Society (ANS) in 2022. Established by Carole Anne Menzi Collier in memory of her late husband, James M. Collier, the biennial award honors the best book, catalogue, or online digital work in the field of ancient numismatics (650 bc-ad 300). In 2025, the ancient Greek and Roman coins of the Collier Collection were sold at auction to fund the endowment; highlights from the collection are featured within. "Ancient numismatics . . . intersects art history, political history, economic history, and religious studies," writes ANS Executive Director Ute Wartenberg Kagan. "When done properly, it is a truly interdisciplinary field that benefits scholars willing to explore different disciplines." ‎Summary The Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem is an exceptional epigraphic site. A major restoration campaign (2013-2020) and the recent bibliography dedicated to the building allow us to question hundreds of inscriptions and graffiti which appear on the mosaics, paintings, and walls of this shrine built on the presumed birthplace of Christ. The site exhibits a graphic symphony-if not cacophony-in Latin, Greek, Arabic, Syriac, Armenian, Georgian, Slavic, and Rus scripts, made by pilgrims and travellers as well as the authorities and the different religious communities over the centuries. The goal of this book, which gathers epigraphists from different backgrounds, as well as historians, art historians, and restorers, is to approach those writings from a variety of perspectives. Which typologies of graphic acts are uncovered and can we escape from the labels 'graffiti' and 'inscriptions'? What purpose do they serve? With which materials and using which techniques where they created, and by whom? Where were they located in the complex of the Church, which includes the caves, the cloister, and the monastic buildings? This study explores the stratigraphy of the writings and offers several plans detailing their distribution, revealing a new chapter in the history of the building, in its use by pilgrims. ‎Summary This publication, the second volume of a broader project, presents the immured glazed vessels (the bacini) located on the fa ades of numerous churches in the regional unit of Lasithi. The research was carried out within the framework of the research programme "Immured vessels in Byzantine and post-Byzantine churches in Greece: an electronic corpus". The study of these ceramics sheds light on an understudied aspect of the material culture of Lasithi during the Venetian and Ottoman periods, as well as in modern times. Since publications on ceramics from this region and chronological span are scarce, the present study provides new insights into the history of the area and its connections with other regions from the 13th to the 21st century. The ceramics are examined in relation to their respective monuments, the surrounding area, and the people of eastern Crete. It thus stands as a clear watershed moment in Late Antiquity. In its aftermath, some cities struggled to regain prominence, while others declined and were abandoned.
