‎Counterfeits, Imitations, and Copies of Roman Imperial Denarii. Making and Faking Coins on Both Sides of the Limes‎

‎, Brepols, 2025 Hardback, 220 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:20 b/w, 75 col., 13 tables b/w., 4 maps b/w, 6 maps color, Language: English. *new ISBN 9782503612447.‎

‎Summary Roman Imperial denarii from the first-third cen turies AD are, almost without exception, the most common ancient coinage to be found in Central, Northern, and Eastern Europe beyond the Roman limes. Perhaps surprisingly, however, a signifi cant percentage of these coins are in fact coun terfeit, comprised largely of denarii subaerati (plated denarii, fourr es) and denarii flati (base-metal cast copies). Moreover, these fake coins were not only manufactured by Romans them selves, but also by barbarian peoples in Eastern Europe, far from the Roman limes, in what should be considered a mass-scale phenomena. This volume draws together archaeologi cal, numismatic, and historical research in order to offer a new assessment of the production and use of counterfeit Roman Imperial denarii both within the European provinces of the Roman Empire and in European Barbaricum. Drawing on the results of the research project Barbarian Fakers. Manufacturing and Use of Counterfeit Roman Imperial Denarii in East-Central Europe in Antiquity, from the University of Warsaw, the papers gathered here explore the transfer of ideas, technology, and finished products that led to the transfer of counterfeit coinage across the Empire, and shed light on how, why, and when such coins were created and used. ‎West Balt Circle Riders. Spurs and their Role in the Bogaczewo and Sudovian Cultures‎

‎, Brepols, 2025 Hardback, 190 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:23 b/w, 11 col., 2 tables b/w., 7 maps color, Languages:English, Polish. *new ISBN 9782503614939.‎

‎Summary The spurs of horse riders have long been acknowledged as an important item of grave furniture in the Late Roman and Migration period burials of Poland, a reflection of the high social position held by the deceased. Yet while spurs have been studied at a general level, and typo-chronological studies have been conducted on spurs found in southern and central Poland, no such research has so far been conducted on finds from the West Balt Circle, in north-eastern Poland. This volume is an attempt to rectify the situation by offering a thorough examination of finds attributed to the Bogaczewo and Sudovian Cultures. The author here offers a comprehensive assessment of surviving materials from the period, many of which are scattered through museums across Europe, together with an in-depth analysis of archival sources (included among them the private inventories of archaeologists working in the pre-war period) in order to reconstruct our understanding of the furnishings and data relating to spurs. This detailed research, carefully contextualized against our wider understanding of Barbarian Europe, offers an important new reference for our understanding both of the West Balt Circle and its inter-cultural relations with surrounding regions, as well as of the symbolic meaning of spurs and their significance in burial rites. ‎Inheritance, Social Networks, Adaptation. Bronze and Early Iron Age Societies North of the Western Carpathians‎

‎, Brepols, 2025 Hardback, 820 pages, Size:210 x 297 mm, Illustrations:124 b/w, 277 col., 46 tables b/w., 2 tables col., Language: English. *new ISBN 9782503616773.‎

‎Summary How did societies change between the Early Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age? And what was the impetus that led to these changes - social contacts and innovation, intergenerational contacts, or perhaps simply adaptation? Taking these questions as its starting point, this richly detailed volume explores four different regions of southern Poland to compare and contrast the mechanisms that drove socio-cultural change in the region between the second and the first half of the first millennium BC. Drawing on standardized sets of archaeological data, the chapters gathered here examine the interplay of different factors influencing cultural change across five key parameters: environment; settlement patterns; settlement organization; economy; and material culture. The result is a beautifully illustrated volume that offers important insights into Central and Eastern European prehistory, made accessible for an English-speaking audience. ‎, Brepols, 2025 Paperback, xii + 262 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:92 b/w, 35 col., 7 tables b/w., 4 maps b/w, 1 maps color, Language: English. *new ISBN 9782503609973.‎

‎Summary The Decapolis city of Jerash has long attracted attention from travellers and scholars, due both to the longevity of the site and the remarkable finds uncovered during successive phases of excavation that have taken place from 1902 onwards. Between 2011 and 2016, a Danish-German team, led by the universities of Aarhus and M nster, focused their attention on the Northwest Quarter of Jerash - the highest point within the walled city - and this volume is the seventh in a series of books presenting the team's final results. This volume provides an in-depth analysis into the ceramic materials found in Jerash's Northwest Quarter, much of which comes from largely undisturbed contexts. The ceramic finds presented in this volume are typo-chronologically evaluated and contextually analysed. The authors then use this dataset as a starting point to explore the micro- and macro-networks that existed in ancient Gerasa from Roman to Early Islamic times more broadly, examining how finely meshed exchange could take place on a micro-regional level, and assessing what conditions were required in order for trade to occur. ‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 2025 paperback, Pages: 175 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm,Illustrations:42 b/w, 72 col., 6 tables b/w., 17 maps b/w, 3 maps color. Language(s):English. *new. ISBN 9782503607528.‎

‎Hoards are among the most enigmatic of archaeological finds. The term ?hoard? itself has been applied to different assemblages across space and time, from the Stone Age into the modern era, with an inventory that typically includes artefacts made of valuable raw materials, to which significant symbolic meanings can also be assigned. Archaeologists have been trying to understand this phenomenon for much of the last century, sometimes emphasizing the universal nature of hoards, but more typically focusing on specific regions, chronologies, and finds. They have, for the most part, used results derived from typolo-chronological methods. Contemporary archaeology has, however, developed a broad spectrum of paradigms and methods, and hoardresearch in the twenty-first century draws on an increasingly wide range of approaches. This volume presents examples of research that make use of these multi-faceted approaches through a focus on European hoards of metal objects dating to the Bronze and Iron Ages. The contributors to this volume make use of diverse methods, among them archaeometallurgical analyses, studies of use- and production-wear, destruction patterns, and landscape archaeology, but together, their common denominator is the search for a methodological toolkit that will allow researchers to better understand the phenomenon of hoard-deposition more broadly.‎

‎Bronstijd vuur van verandering‎

‎Leiden, Sidestone Press, 2024 Softcover met illustratie, 167 pagina's, 28 x 21 cm, talrijke illustraties. Nederlandstalige tekst. Nieuw. ISBN 9789464263152.‎

‎Leiden, Sidestone Press, 2025 softcover, 150 pagina's afbeeldingen, 28x21cm *nieuw. ISBN 9789464263565.‎

‎Gendering the Nordic Past Dialogues between Perspectives‎

‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 2025 Paperback, Pages: 261 pages,Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:6 b/w, 21 col., 11 tables b/w. Language:English *new. ISBN 9782503608877.‎

‎The idea of the Nordic nations as champions of gender equality is firmly rooted in today?s perceptions of society. But how does such a modern comprehension influence our views of history? Does our understanding of gender impact on how we see the past? And do the ways in which we gender the past have an effect on our present identities? From the Stone Age to the Early Modern period, and from warriors and queens to households and burials, this groundbreaking volume draws together research conducted as part of the project Gendering the Nordic Past, an inter-Nordic collaboration aimed at (re)evaluating and revitalizing the field of gender studies in the region. The chapters gathered in this volume, contributed by archaeologists and historians, theologians, art historians, and specialists in gender studies, aim to offer novel perspectives on the ways in which we gender the past. While many of the chapters focus explicitly on the Nordic countries, comparisons are also drawn with other regions in order to provide both internal and external views on the role of the collective past in present Nordic identities. The result, presented here, is an essential dialogue into the importance of gender in creating and maintaining past identities, as well as a new understanding of how the identities that we construct for the past can relate to heritage narratives. ‎Cuneiform Texts in The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Volume I: Tablets, Cones, and Bricks of the Third and Second Millennia B.C.‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 1988 Cloth binding with dustjacket, 408 pages, 29 x 22.5 cm, english text. *Fine condition. . ISBN 0870994956.‎

‎This book is the initial publication in a four-volume series on the collection of cuneiform tablets and inscriptions in the Metropolitan Museum's Department of Ancient Near Eastern Art. It is a scholarly study of objects acquired largely during the 1880s, when the Metropolitan became the first American museum to acquire a substantial number of cuneiform texts. Today the Museum's collection totals more than five hundred texts and fragments; the publication of these volumes will make these texts available in a manner that will instruct and inform as wide an audience as possible. Cuneiform Texts in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Volume I: Tablets, Cones, and Bricks of the Third and Second Millennia B.C. presents 120 commercial texts, legal texts, and letters, along with cones and bricks, from ancient Mesopotamia. This material is offered in both transliteration and translation, with drawings and selected photographs of the tablets as well as descriptions, drawings, and photographs of the seal impressions appearing on them. Features of special interest in this volume include the presentation of Sumerian ledger-account translations in modern accounting formats; allocations for the royal family of the Sumerian king Sulgi of the Third Dynasty of Ur; an Old Babylonian military confrontation with the Kassites, as disclosed in correspondence; Old Assyrian correspondence involving smuggling, moth-eaten textile shipments, legal testimony, and a caravan report presented in both textual translation and modern-ledger format; as well as new collations and translations of Amarna-period royal correspondence. Ira Spar is the editor of the Museum's cuneiform-tablet project, with a distinguished international group of collaborators assisting in the preparation of the texts. Each scholar has prepared manuscripts within his respective field of expertise, and hand copies of the tablets and seal inscriptions have been drawn by Dr. Spar. The inclusion in this volume of a comprehensive catalogue of the seal impressions on the tablets and cases illustrates the Museum's interest in publishing these works of art in their original context. The seal impressions are presented with brief commentary together with photographs and scale drawings prepared by Holly Pittman, Associate Curator in the Department of Ancient Near Eastern Art at the Metropolitan Museum. The second volume of this series will contain the literary and scholastic texts from the second millennium B.C. to the first century A.D.; the third volume will present the administrative, commercial, and legal tablets from the first millennium B.C. A final short volume will contain all cuneiform inscriptions found on objects in the Museum's collections.‎

‎Trophies of Victory: Public Building in Periklean Athens‎

‎Princeton, Princeton University Press, 2016 Softcover, 496 pages, 28 x 21.5 cm. English text. *as new. ISBN 9780691170572.‎

‎The Greek military victories at Marathon, Salamis, and Plataia during the Persian Wars profoundly shaped fifth-century politics and culture. By long tradition, the victors commemorated their deliverance by dedicating thank-offerings in the sanctuaries of their gods, and the Athenians erected no fewer than ten new temples and other buildings. Because these buildings were all at some stage of construction during the political ascendency of Perikles, in the third quarter of the fifth century, modern writers refer to them collectively as the Periklean building program. In Trophies of Victory, T. Leslie Shear, Jr., who directed archaeological excavations at the Athenian Agora for more than twenty-five years, provides the first comprehensive account of the Periklean buildings as a group. This richly illustrated book examines each building in detail, including its archaeological reconstruction, architectural design, sculptural decoration, chronology, and construction history. Shear emphasizes the Parthenon?s revolutionary features and how they influenced smaller contemporary temples. He examines inscriptions that show how every aspect of public works was strictly controlled by the Athenian Assembly. In the case of the buildings on the Acropolis and the Telesterion at Eleusis, he looks at accounts of their overseers, which illuminate the administration, financing, and organization of public works. Throughout, the book provides new details about how the Periklean buildings proclaimed Athenian military prowess, aggrandized the city?s cults and festivals, and laid claim to its religious and cultural primacy in the Greek world. T. Leslie Shear, Jr., is professor emeritus of classical archaeology at Princeton University. From 1968 to 1994, he was director of archaeological excavations in the Athenian Agora, working under the auspices of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens. He is the author of Kallias of Sphettos and the Revolution of Athens in 286 B.C.‎

‎This volume presents contributions by leading scholars on various topics and aspects of Islamic Archaeology, a discipline which has recently seen the development of exciting new approaches to the study of the material culture of the Muslim world. This material culture was produced by and/or for Muslims, as well as by and/or for non-Muslims living under Islamic rule from the 7th century onward, in an expanding and ultimately vast area reaching from southern Europe to West Asia. The contributions in this book focus on Jordan, Oman, Spain, Turkey, Lebanon, as well as Israel, and cover a timespan from the 7th century through the Mamluk period to the early 20th century. They highlight the archaeology of large Islamic centers in the past, but also of the material culture in smaller sites and peripheral regions. Special emphasis is paid to pottery as one of the main artifacts that carry information on past societies, but other finds and materials are discussed as well. The aspect of Islamic material culture which receives particular attention is ?production?, specifically the production of clay vessels, glaze, mercury, and crops. What unites the new approaches presented here is that Islam is understood as both a ?religion? and a framework for economic, cultural, and social networks and influence. In this perspective, the volume aims to offer students of Islamic archaeology, historians of Islam and archaeologists of different disciplines a glimpse of the state-of-the-art in current Islamic Archaeology TABLE OF CONTENTS JOANITA VROOM (Series Editor) Preface HAGIT NOL & JOANITA VROOM (Volume Editors) Introduction: Current trends in Islamic Archaeology THEORY AND POTTERY JOS CRIST BAL CARVAJAL L PEZ Islamization and ceramics: Assembling change and Con-Text BETHANY J. ‎The Battle of Gaugamela, in which Alexander the Great?s army faced the Persian army of King Darius III in 331 BCE, remains a famous date in history, the last battle that led to Alexander?s conquest of the Achaemenid Empire. However, the topography and chronology of the campaign have, up to now, remained little studied. Taking these two elements as its starting point, this volume draws both on the latest archaeological research in the region and on recent advances in science (in particular GIS) to offer a completely new reconstruction of the Gaugamela campaign, arguing for a much shorter campaign than has hitherto been understood. By turning the spotlight for the first time onto the geographical and topographical context of the campaign, the author here also provides a new understanding of both the scale of Alexander?s military achievement and the long-term effects of the military reforms introduced by his father, Philip II. ‎Thanks largely to the introduction of new methods of recovery and analysis, archaeology is increasingly treated as a science. Yet, it should continue to ask questions that are founded in the humanities. This is especially true of social archaeology, which forms the core of this volume. Being based on the notion that ?the social? permeates all areas of life, the chapters gathered here give priority to archaeological data and contexts, which in turn form the prerequisite for analyzing how, at particular times and places, people negotiated or reaffirmed the society around them. Case studies from the Levant and the Eastern Mediterranean sit alongside selected comparative cases from other parts of the world and assess issues such as the development of cultural characteristics of societies, societal continuity and collapse, religious beliefs and rituals, and the role of social memory, as well as interactions within and between societies. The volume is dedicated to the memory of our colleague and friend, Dr Sharon Zuckerman, who embraced the quest for ?the social? throughout her career. TABLE OF CONTENTS List of Illustrations 1. ‎From the Chalcolithic onwards, the culture and society of Sumer flourished along the banks of the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, with communities living close to the ancient shoreline in an environment that was closely linked to the exploitation of fluvial systems, the sea, and the unique marshlands of the area. This volume gathers together research first presented as part of a workshop, entitled Sumer and the Sea: Deltas, Shoreline, and Urban Water Management in 3rd Millennium Mesopotamia, to explore the interaction between Sumerians and their water-dominated environment. The chapters gathered here offer updates on methodologies and the most recent research from the field to provide new understanding and fresh insights into how the Sumerians adapted to the world in which they lived. ‎Gendering the Nordic Past Dialogues between Perspectives‎

‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 2025 Paperback, Pages: 264 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:6 b/w, 19 col., 11 tables b/w., Language:English, *New.

‎Landscape archaeology has, in recent years, expanded as a discipline to include various aspects of human-environment interactions in the past. In line with this trend, this volume offers a comprehensive perspective on three topics: theoretical and textual approaches to landscape, which provides an important framework for interdisciplinary research; the use of land and resources, which, while a popular topic in Southwest Asian archaeology, remains relatively understudied in connection to ancient technologies; and human impact on the highlands. The contributions gathered in this volume cover topics as diverse as agricultural practices, metallurgy, trade, and environmental research, and draw together evidence from both textual and material evidence to shed light on different places and periods from the Bronze Age through to the Roman era. Together, these varied case studies offer new insights into how different methods can be utilized to assess unique patterns in human-environment interactions in Southwest Asia. ‎Sanctuary of Parthenos at Ancient Neapolis (Kavala) Volume I Incised and Painted Ceramic Inscriptions from the Sanctuary and in Aegean Thrace‎

‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 2025 Paperback, Pages: xvi + 192 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:191 b/w, 17 col., 20 tables b/w., Language:English, *New. ISBN 9782503614809.‎

‎The ancient city of Neapolis (modern Kavala, Greece) was founded by Thasos in the seventh century BCE at a strategic location where the Thracian hinterlands meet the Aegean Sea. The patron deity of this North Aegean polis was Parthenos (the Maiden), known to us through epigraphic and archaeological evidence. Her sanctuary came to light in the twentieth century during rescue excavations, and yielded numerous finds, most of which date from the Archaic period. This monograph provides a discussion of the history of excavations at this sanctuary, as well as a contextual examination of the material, leading to a new interpretation of Parthenos? identity. Among the wealth of finds from the site, the corpus of incised and painted ceramic inscriptions stands out, as it offers a unique glimpse into the history of the cosmopolitan temenos and the dedicatory practices and rituals that took place there. The inscribed vessels carry dedications, numerical and other graffiti, and dipinti, as well as the initials of the goddess, which designate them as sacred equipment. When considered in the context of the ceramic inscriptions from sanctuaries across Aegean Thrace, they further underscore the important role of Neapolis and the Sanctuary of Parthenos in the commercial networks and cultural dynamics of the Aegean, both in the early stages of Greek colonization, and in the centuries that followed. TABLE OF CONTENTS List of Illustrations Author?s Preface 1. Parthenos in Neapolis: Sanctuary, Cult, Identity 2. Inscribed Pottery 3. Incised Inscriptions and Sketches 4. ‎Common Wares of Sagalassos‎

‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 2000 softcover Pages: 350 pages, Size:210 x 295 mm, Language :English . ISBN 9782503507972.‎

‎By far the most common archaeological finds consist of potsherds. Although the study of ceramics started at an early date, discrepancies and lacunae are rife in this area of archaeological research. For the Roman period the so-called fine wares have always attracted more interest than the more utilitarian ceramics. Although this situation has been rectified to a large extent in the Roman west, the eastern part of the empire remains by and large terra incognita, with most of the effort going into the study of fine wares. A second discrepancy exists between the coastal areas, which are rather well known, and the inland sites, specifically in Asia Minor. This book is one of the first attempts to rectify at least in part the existing situation by studying the common wares of the Roman town of Sagalassos in Pisidia from the first to the middle of the seventh century. The research on a previously unknown pottery manufacturing centre is placed within the wider framework of pottery research in the eastern Mediterranean, but contrary to most of the extant studies, the chosen approach is not limited to typology and chronology. Also included are a full mineralogical/chemical analysis of the different fabrics, both local and imported, while the full typological spectrum of wares and types is described, quantified and illustrated. As such it represents a major addition to the ceramics research concerning the eastern Roman empire.‎

‎Writing Tablets of Roman Tongeren (Belgium) and Associated Wooden Finds‎

‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 2025 Hardback, Pages: 424 p. Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:3 b/w, 295 col., 11 tables b/w. Language:English *new. ISBN 9782503616872.‎

‎Roman wooden writing tablets, known in Latin as tabulae ceratae, have been found by archaeologists in various locations around the former capital of the civitas/municipium Tungrorum or Roman Tongeren (now the Belgian city of Tongeren-Borgloon). These rare and delicate finds are remarkable not only due to the excellent state of their preservation, but also because they are inscribed with the remnants of texts, once etched into an overlying wax layer, that can, to the discerning eye, still be deciphered. The tablets not only provide concrete information about religious, judicial and administrative practices, but they also enhance our understanding of the complex processes of Romanisation and Latinisation in the northwestern civitates and municipia of the Roman Empire. Unearthed in the first half of the twentieth century, with a second group discovered in 2013, the Roman tablets housed in the Gallo-Roman Museum of Tongeren-Borgloon and in the city?s municipal heritage depository, became the object of an in-depth study by an international team of specialists piloted by the Gallo-Roman Museum. It is the results of this project that are presented here in this volume for the first time. The painstaking process of deciphering and interpreting the script marks and text fragments is explored via analysis of palaeography, philology and onomastics, along with key scientific techniques such as wax analysis, wood species identification, and script visualisation by Multi-Light Reflectance Imaging. Rich detail is also provided about other associated wooden finds that shed light on how and where the tablets were produced. The result is a beautifully illustrated and insightful volume that introduces the lost world of Roman Tongeren and its writing tablets to professionals and the general public alike.Edited by Else Hartoch and with contributions by Bl nsdorf J., Scholz M., Accardo S., Boudin M., Deforce K., De Vos D., Groetembril S., Hameeuw H., Hartoch E., Marquez C., Pauwels D., Raepsaet G., Raepsaet-Charlier M.-Th., Vanderhoeven A., Van Kersen V., Verbanck-Pi rard A. & Watteeuw L.‎

‎Yale, Yale University Press, 2023 Hardcover with dusjacket, 296 pages, 31.5 x 24 cm, richly illustrated. *New. ISBN 9780300266566.‎

‎A comprehensive look at ancient sculptures, wall paintings, vases, and more depicting the elderly in Greek and Roman society Some of the most vivid portraits in ancient art depict older members of society. In marble and bronze sculptures, on coins and painted vases, and in wall paintings and mosaics, elderly men and women are shown with the telltale signs of old age: wrinkles, white hair, sagging jowls, and stooped postures. This publication examines more than 300 of these vivid images to reveal perceptions?both positive and negative?about aging and the aged in Greek and Roman society. Seven chapters explore medium and form?including Greek grave reliefs, marble grave monuments in Roman Africa, and Roman sarcophagi?as well as subjects, from priests and priestesses to ancient kings of Athens, old gods, and satyrs. Grounded in the analysis of art, contemporary literature, and the archaeological record, this comprehensive volume is the first in English to explore how old age was presented in art from antiquity.‎

‎, Hermann, 2020 Hardcover, 450 pages, 22 x 28 cm, illustr . *Neuf. ISBN 9791037001627.‎
