La storia inizia infatti dagli anni del pontificato di Innocenzo III: papa autoritario, di lucida visione teocratica e di vasti disegni politici, che proclama l'universalita della Chiesa e al tempo stesso bada a consolidare il suo potere temporale, fortificando i territori circostanti a Roma, estendendo l'autorita pontificia sulle regioni limitrofe, facendo insomma dello Stato della Chiesa uno stato agguerrito e capace di fronteggiare i pericoli e gli attacchi anche militari. Non meraviglia, in questo quadro ideologico e politico, che Innocenzo III sia anche il papa che mette mano ai piu grandi edifici della citta sacra, Roma, per rifarli e rammodernarli e in questo modo presentare l'immagine di una chiesa tradizionale, ma attuale e rinnovata. Tramite i cantieri innocenziani, Roma viene toccata da una potente ondata bizantineggiante, originata dal risalire degli artisti che erano stati attivi nei cantieri normanni di Palermo e Monreale, e che rimasti senza lavoro per la fine della potenza normanna in Sicilia e Italia meridionale vanno a cercarne la dove l'attivita e piu intensa, e quindi specialmente a Roma. Subito dopo pero le cose cambiano, e la cultura dell'Europa gotica comincia a premere anche alle porte della Citta per definizione piu tradizionalista di tutte. Nei decenni centrali del Duecento una vera e propria invasione di temi e iconografie rinnovate si verifica, negli edifici della citta che li hanno conservati e che sono stati riscoperti anche molto recentemente: il caso del grande ciclo ad affresco nel salone gotico dei Santi Quattro Coronati e emblematico, centinaia di metri quadri di splendida pittura meravigliosamente conservata, ritrovati e rimessi in luce da pochi anni, testimonianza di una cultura pittorica modernissima e raffinata. Il ciclo dei Santi Quattro, insieme ad altri ritrovamenti ugualmente recenti ma di minore entita come ad esempio quello nel convento di San Clemente mette in luce un momento della vita della Roma medievale, fino ad ora considerato 'vuoto' e privo di testimonianze artistiche; e segnala con grande evidenza la ricchezza e la modernita della pittura che si faceva a Roma, nelle cerchie dei papi, dei cardinali, nei loro palazzi fortificati e nelle loro chiese, anche quando il papa, con la curia, era esule e rifugiato altrove, anche quando la citta di Roma viene a lungo abbandonata dalla corte pontificia che preferisce sedi e palazzi come quelli di Viterbo o di Orvieto, piu lontani dalla minaccia federiciana. Mette in luce, anche, quanto 'gotica' sia stata la tradizionalissima cerchia dei papi: proprio perche la corte pontificia era, appunto, una corte, attorno a papi che nei decenni centrali del Duecento sono spesso francesi, in contatto con la cultura d'oltralpe, e si fanno tramite dell'arrivo di oggetti e di testimonianze del gusto nordico. Il volume si chiude con gli avvenimenti di un pontificato quello di Nicolo III Orsini che dura pochi anni, dal 1277 al 1280, ma che rappresenta un nuovo momento di importanza fondamentale per la storia della cultura e dell'arte a Roma. A differenza di molti suoi immediati predecessori, Nicolo Orsini non e francese, non e forestiero: e romano, di nobile famiglia, e il programma del suo regno e tutto volto a riprendere in mano la Citta, a riconsiderarne le tradizioni, a riproporre con forza l'immagine di un'autorita pontificia che e indissociabile dall'idea di Roma. Non molti anni fa, la riscoperta e il restauro degli affreschi del Sancta Sanctorum al Laterano che sono naturalmente compresi in questo volume - mostrarono con chiarezza a quale livello di qualita e di densita simbolica fosse arrivato questo papa, committente della cappella e della sua decorazione a mosaico e ad affresco, pur in un tempo cosi breve di regno. Ce qui permet a Ton Derks, d?inserer dans leur contexte historique des conduites sociales jusqu?alors mal interpretees, ? la prise en compte des deplacement de categories entre hommes et femmes, masculin et feminin, qu?apportent les etudes de genre mises en perspective par Violaine Sebillotte, ? l?exploration d?un certain nombre de domaines nouveaux, parmi lesquels, celui des emotions que j?ai moi?meme aborde, ou celui de la perception des couleurs dont Adeline Grand?Clement s?est attachee a eclairer la logique. L?ensemble des incursions ainsi menees dans l?Antiquite (grecque, romaine, phenicienne, gallo-romaine), fait emerger une richesse qui n?est jamais figee et qui fait echo aux propos de Jean-Pierre Vernant dans la Preface redigee en 1968, pour l?edition des etudes de Louis Gernet reunies sous le titre ?« Anthropologie de la Grece antique ?». The incorporation of new provinces in the Roman Empire, both in the East and the West, coincides with marked changes in urban infrastructure and layout, and in rural settlement patterns, as is attested by numerous excavations and surveys.While scholars agree on the quantitative and qualitative transformation of cities and their territories, such as an increase in the number of monumental buildings and rural sites, a significantly higher degree of urbanization, a more sophisticated lifestyle etc., little research has been devoted to the ways in which these structures and sites, and their internal components, were organized spatially. The eleven papers presented in this volume result from workshops organized by the international, interdisciplinary ROCT-network (Roman Crafts and Trade). From a heterogeneous chronological and geographical background, the peer-reviewed collection of papers focuses on one central issue: the use of space in the Roman world. Space, on all sorts of levels, shapes human life, now as in the past. The edited volume contrasts two dimensions of space: the macro-scale at regional level and the micro-scale at local level. Moreover, the selected papers are written against a variety of methodological backgrounds and practices, including excavation and surveying strategies, contextual analysis and material culture studies. The variety of content, approaches and interpretation results from the conscious deliberation that this is the only possible way to think about space in the Roman world. The contributions cover the Roman world with its provinces, throughout the long period in history which can be considered Roman in each of the study areas.Frank Vermeulen is professor of Roman archaeology and of archaeological method at Ghent University. His research interests cover settlement history and landscape development in the western Mediterranean during Antiquity. Raymond Brulet est Professeur d'Archeologie nationale a l'Universite catholique de Louvain (Louvain-la-Neuve). Il est specialise dans la periode de l'Antiquite tardive et dans le domaine de l'Archeometrie. Hannelore Vanhaverbeke is a Postdoctoral Fellow of the Research Foundation - Flanders (FWO-Belgium); she is the field director of the annual rural surveys near Sagalassos and teaches at the Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium). Jeroen Poblome is a research professor at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. He studies artisanal production organization and exchange patterns and mechanisms in the ancient eastern Mediterranean, with fieldwork in Boeotia, Pisidia and Cilicia.

Les restes osseux et dentaires sont souvent les seuls temoins des populations humaines aujourd'hui disparues. Or, en raison meme des interactions entre son metabolisme et l'environnement, le squelette renferme de nombreuses informations concernant l'individu auquel il appartenait. Pour reconstituer l'alimentation des populations d'autrefois, on peut faire appel a differentes methodes de l'anthropologie physique. Certaines pathologies du squelette signalent des carences alimentaires. Les etudes de la carie et de l'usure dentaire informent sur l'alimentation ainsi que sur le mode de preparation de la nourriture. De leur cote, les analyses chimiques des os et des dents permettent notamment de distinguer l'origine terrestre ou marine, carnee ou vegetale d'une alimentation et de detecter des expositions a certains elements toxiques comme le plomb. Apres avoir rappele l'essentiel des connaissances sur la composition, les fonctions et le metabolisme des os et des dents, ce fascicule fait le point sur les principales methodes employees par les paleoanthropologues pour reconstituer les regimes alimentaires dans le passe. Il met ensuite l'accent sur l'obstacle majeur aux analyses chimiques des tissus calcifies : la contamination des ossements apres leur enfouissement. Enfin, il developpe les principaux objectifs poursuivis dans les etudes paleoalimentaires : la reconstitution des types d'aliments consommes, l'evolution des regimes et des comportements alimentaires au cours des temps, la mise en evidence de differences selon le sexe, l'age et la position sociale des individus. Certains echantillons permettent meme de diagnostiquer des types de carence et de cerner des pratiques de sevrage. Ni l'archeologie traditionnelle, ni l'archeozoologie n'ont traite avec autant de precision ces questions vitales.

BC, the Assyrian policy of settlement in the conquered regions led to a capillary occupation of most of the available landscapes in the provinces: the result is a large amount of excavations with materials dating to this period. The Atlas aims to develop a global typology that can be applied to the whole Assyrian repertory, in order to highlight the main types and to define their precise chronology and diffusion in the various regions conquered by Assyrians.

They were excavated in the 1930ies by a team from the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago, directed by Robert J. Braidwood. Most of them were never published before. Their dates range from the late 3rd millennium BC until the Hellenistic period. The terra-cottas are presented in a catalogue, but also set in a frame of their cultural and artistic background. This book is thus not only a publication of material from the Amuq excavations, but also a history of 2nd and 1st millennium terra-cotta production in ancient Syria. The study of these figurines highlights the extent and limitations of iconographic influences from abroad and proves the continuity of images and beliefs across the borders of cultural periods.
