Bowden William
EPIRUS VETUS The Archaeology of a Late Antique Province
Duckworth. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 2003. Hardcover. 0715631160 . Book is fine. DJ is protected in mylar sleeve. ; The land that once formed the late antique Roman province of Epirus Vetus now straddles the border between Albania and Greece a volatile area whose history since the Second World War has meant that modern political boundaries rather than those of antiquity have defined study of the ancient province. In this readable well illustrated account William Bowden reassesses the archaeological evidence from the fourth to the seventh century AD when the area changed from a Roman province to a distant region beyond the limits of the empire using the data to construct a model of the changing social structures that underlay this important transition. His analysis reveals that these changes were not gradual transformations but rather a series of sharply defined discontinuities and suggests that these processes resulted in a more fragmented society in which groups coalesced around individuals rather than concepts of town or state. The book also examines the controversial issue of Slavic settlement in the area in the immediate post-Roman period a subject that even today remains dominated by the questions of nationalism and ethnic identity that have recently had such tragic consequences in the Balkans. ; Duckworth Archaeology; 256 pages . University of California Press. Very Good in Good dust jacket. 1995. Hardcover. 0520067738 . Inscribed by author to ffep in pencil: "A Gift from Ann Kuttner". Minor shelfwear and rubbing to boards. Dustjacket has shelfwear and rubbing with some creasing. Two tears to back panel and light chipping to heel of DJ spine. ; 465 pages; The two silver skyphoi commonly known as the Boscoreale Cups of Augustus and Tiberius are indispensable for providing the documentation of one of the only two cycles of Roman imperial state reliefs to survive from the Julio-Claudian period. Ann Kuttner offers the first comprehensive examination of these historical treasures. Kuttner studies the Cups not only from the standpoint of art history but also as they relate to Augustan ideology and politics. When she began work on this book the whereabouts of the Cups were unknown and she had to rely on the illustrations in Monuments et Memoires Fondation Eugen Pinot 1901. The rediscovery of the Cups at the Louvre in late 1990 has allowed Kuttner to examine them directly. ; Signed by Author . University of California Press hardcover

Light stains to front panel of DJ. Else very minor shelfwear to DJ. ; After an introduction of the Royal Necropolis of Sidon examines the faces and finally the lid of the Alexander Sarcophagus in detail. At the end of the book its decorative style and ornamentation is described. The Alexander Sarcophagus has been a major attraction of the Istanbul Archaeological Museum ever since it was found in the late nineteenth century. Although named after Alexander the Great the sarcophagus was not his but was probably that of Abdalonymos the last king of Sidon Saida. Abdalonymos owed his throne to Alexander and the latter's close friend and general Hephaistion. The subject matter of the reliefs decorating the sarcophagus suggests that Abdalonymos was here commemorating his benefactors; the sarcophagus thus takes its name not from the ruler who commissioned it but from its iconography; 64 pages . MAMMOTH The Resurrection of an Ice Age Giant
Basic Books. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 2001. Hardcover. 0738202819 . Black felt marker line to bottom of textblock else book is fine. Light shelfwear and rubbing to DJ. ; 256 pages; No fabled creature of the Pleistocene Era has a more powerful hold on the imagination than does the woolly mammoth. Cave paintings of the giant beasts hint at the profound role they played in early human culture-our Ice Age ancestors built igloo-shaped huts out of mammoth bones and even feasted on mammoth tongues. Eager to uncover more clues to this mystical prehistoric age explorers since the time of Peter the Great have scoured Siberia for mammoth remains. Now a new generation of explorers has taken to the tundra. Armed with GPS ground-penetrating radar and Soviet-era military helicopters they seek an elusive prize: a mammoth carcass that will help determine how the creature lived how it died-and how it might be brought back to life. In this adventure-filled narrative science writer Richard Stone follows two teams of explorers-one Russian/Japanese the other a French-led consortium-as they battle bitter cold high winds supply shortages and the deeply rooted superstitions of indigenous peoples who fear the consequences of awakening the "rat beneath the ice." Stone travels from St. Petersburg to the Arctic Circle from the North Sea to high-tech Japanese laboratories as he traces the sometimes-surreal quest of these intrepid scientists whose work could well rewrite our planet's evolutionary history. A riveting tale of high-stakes adventure and scientific hubris Mammoth is also an intellectual voyage through uncharted moral terrain as we confront the promise and peril of resurrecting creatures from the deep past. . Cooley Alison E. Ed.
THE EPIGRAPHIC LANDSCAPE OF ROMAN ITALY
University of London Institute of Classical Studies. Very Good. 2000. Softcover. 0900587849 . Slight spine slant. Very minor shelfwear. ; Bulletin of the Institute of Classical Studies Supplement 73; 212 pages; With contributions from Edward Bispham Guy Bradley Alison E. Cooley Fay Glinister Valerie Hope Mark Pobjoy and Benet Salway. The Epigraphic Landscape presents a series of case-studies in which a new generation of scholars examines the significance of interpreting inscriptions in terms of their topographical context and physical appearance. Some chapters focus on a genre of inscription honorific building and funerary whilst others discuss a single text such as the Rapino Bronze and the album of Canusium. This approach reveals the contribution of inscribed monuments to the transformation of towns and countryside and the impact of Rome on the landscape of the rest of Italy. The integration of epigraphic literary archaeological and topographical sources suggests new ways of looking at Roman colonization in Umbria. The transformation of the epigraphic landscape of its surrounding region challenges current views on the date of Laviniums decline. Similar inscriptions from Puteoli provide a starting-point for exploring the activities of the super-lite of Campania. By trying to reconstruct the motivations behind inscriptions several contributors reveal the subjectivity of these texts such as the factors governing the appearance of gladiators tombstones and warn against adopting too literal an interpretation of these sources even if inscribed in stone. .
