Dustjacket has edgewear with light chipping and a couple of small closed tears along bottom edge. ; The Memoirs of the American Academy in Rome Volume XXXVII; 431 pages; Cosa was a Latin colonia founded under Roman influence in southwestern Tuscany in 273 BC perhaps on land confiscated from the Etruscans. One of the last textual references to Cosa comes from the work of Rutilius Claudius Namatianus in his De reditu suo. In the passage 1.285-90 Rutilius remarks that by 416 the site of Cosa was deserted and could be seen to be in ruins. In the 20th century Cosa was the site of excavations carried out under the auspices of the American Academy in Rome initially under the direction of the archaeologist Frank Edward Brown. Excavations 1948-54 1965-72 have traced the city plan the principal buildings the port and have uncovered the Arx the forum and a number of houses. Unexcavated buildings include a bathing establishment but no trace of a theater or an amphitheater has been found. In the 1990s a limited series of excavations were carried out under the direction of Elizabeth Fentress then associated with the American Academy in Rome. This latter campaign aimed at understanding the history of the site between the imperial period and the middle agest. Sample excavations took place over the whole site with larger excavations on the Arx the Eastern Height and around the Forum. . Pennsylvania State University Press hardcover

THE FOUNDATION OF ROME Myth and History
Cornell University Press. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1997. Hardcover. 080143114X . Top corners lightly bumped. Light general soiling. ; 9.5 x 0.75 x 6.5 Inches; 236 pages; "The Foundation of Rome is one of the few intelligent books on the subject neither hypercritical nor visionary; its particular strength lies in the skillful interweaving of modern historiography and ideology with ancient history. "--Jerzy Linderski University of North Carolina. At once a historical essay and a self-conscious meditation on the writing of history The Foundation of Rome takes as its starting point a series of accounts of Rome's origins offered over the course of centuries. Alexandre Grandazzi places these accounts in their contemporary contexts and shows how the growing sophistication in methodology gradually changed the accepted views of the city's origins. He looks for example at the hypercritical philology of the nineteenth century which cast aside everything that could not be verified. He then explains how the increase in archaeological discoveries and changing archaeological techniques influenced the story of Rome's birth. Grandazzi produces a depiction of Rome's origins that is both up-to-date and provocative. His use of scientific parallels in describing changes in the ways texts were analyzed and his broad familiarity with comparative material make his synthesis particularly illuminating and he writes with clarity verve and wit. . Effros, Bonnie
MEROVINGIAN MORTUARY ARCHAEOLOGY AND THE MAKING OF THE EARLY MIDDLE AGES
University of California Press. Fine in Fine dust jacket. 2003. Hardcover. 0520232445 . Clothing jewelry animal remains ceramics coins and weaponry are among the artifacts that have been discovered in graves in Gaul dating from the fifth to eighth century. Those who have unearthed them from the middle ages to the present have speculated widely on their meaning. This authoritative book makes a major contribution to the study of death and burial in late antique and early medieval society with its long overdue systematic discussion of this mortuary evidence. Tracing the history of Merovingian archaeology within its cultural and intellectual context for the first time Effros exposes biases and prejudices that have colored previous interpretations of these burial sites and assesses what contemporary archaeology can tell us about the Frankish kingdoms. Working at the intersection of history and archaeology and drawing from anthropology and art history Effros emphasizes in particular the effects of historical events and intellectual movements on French and German antiquarian and archaeological studies of these grave goods. Her discussion traces the evolution of concepts of nationhood race and culture and shows how these concepts helped shape an understanding of the past. Effros then turns to contemporary multidisciplinary methodologies and finds that we are still limited by the types of information that can be readily gleaned from physical and written sources of Merovingian graves. For example since material evidence found in the graves of elite families and particularly elite men is more plentiful and noteworthy mortuary goods do not speak as directly to the conditions in which women and the poor lived. The clarity and sophistication with which Effros discusses the methods and results of European archaeology is a compelling demonstration of the impact of nationalist ideologies on a single discipline and of the struggle toward the more pluralistic vision that has developed in the post-war years. ; 1.05 x 9.24 x 6.38 Inches; 272 pages . STYLE AND SOCIETY IN DARK AGE GREECE The Changing Face of a Pre-literate Society 1100-700 BC
Cambridge University Press. Fine in Very Good dust jacket. 1991. Hardcover. 0521373832 . Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing. ; In this innovative study James Whitley examines the relationship between the development of pot style and social changes in the Dark Age of Greece 1100-700 BC. He focuses on Athens where the Protogeometric and Geometric styles first appeared. He considers pot shape and painted decoration primarily in relation to the other relevant features - metal artefacts grave architecture funerary rites and the age and sex of the deceased - and also takes into account different contexts in which these shapes and decorations appear. A computer analysis of grave assemblages supports his view that pot style is an integral part of the collective representations of Early Athenian society. It is a lens through which we can focus on the changing social circumstances of Dark Age Greece. Dr Whitley's approach to the study of style challenges many of the assumptions which have underpinned more traditional studies of Early Greek art. ; New Studies in Archaeology; 10.25 x 1 x 7.5 Inches; 245 pages . CRUSADER ARCHAEOLOGY The Material Culture of the Latin East
Routledge. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1999. Hardcover. 0415173612 . Book has light bumping to corners and spine ends. Otherwise in Near Fine condition . ; One of the most fascinating and intriguing aspects of historical research is the study of how invading societies adapt to a strange environment undergoing change themselves as well as influencing their new neighbours and surroundings. From the end of the eleventh century there were Christian states in the Levant which were hybrid societies resulting from the meeting of the very different cultures of the East and West. Although a wealth of literature has been written on the Crusading movement affording a clearer picture of what the Crusades entailed little has been written to illuminate Franish life in the lands beyond the sea. Crusader Archeology draws together recently excavated material from Israel Cyprus Syria and Jordan to examine what life was life for the Crusaders in their new territory and how they were influenced by the local population. Chapters encompass Frankish urban and rural settlements including agriculture industry the differing architecture employed by the military the church public and private structures arts and crafts leisure pursuits death and burial customs and building techniques. This highly illustrated volume comprises a graphic portrayal of the period and makes fascinating reading for all those interested in the Middle Ages and particularly in the Crusaders. ; 0.98 x 9.5 x 6.47 Inches; 267 pages . Cotterell Arthur
CHARIOT The Astounding Rise and Fall of the World's First War Machine
Pimlico. Fine in Fine dust jacket. 2004. Hardcover. 0712669426 . Narrating the development and disappearance of the world's first war machine this book reminds readers that much of the power of ancient empires was two-wheeled and horse-driven. Harnessed to other historians' broad-spectrum research on the causes of the end of the Bronze Age Cotterell argues that much like the later introduction of the stirrup chariot technology dramatically recast battlefield strategy across the ancient world. Egyptians employed chariots as all-purpose fighting machines while Roman chariots were more ceremonial and Indian troops used theirs as archery platforms; Chinese engineers developed more efficient harnesses permitting heavier cars. The author's comparative approach broadens the appeal of what would otherwise seem a narrow topic but this account nevertheless behaves as a detailed military history. Particularly interesting for such scholarship the author also discusses the chariot as a vehicle for modern popular culture; it aims to dispel the notion that chariots were simply horse-pulled tanks. Scholarly yet accessible ; 344 pages . Pimlico hardcover
