ROOSEVELT ELEANOR. The second
TLS
1957. ROOSEVELT Eleanor Wife of Theodore Roosevelt Jr. TYPED LETTER SIGNED. Dated May 17 1957 on letterhead Old Orchard NY. To Adelaide wife of John Marquand. An affectionate and intimate letter in which Eleanor Roosevelt reacts to the news of the Marquands' separation: "I am so very sorry to hear that you and John are separated at the moment and I do hope most fervently that it will not be permanent. Many times I have seen patience win against what had appeared to be great odds." But not in this case - the Marquands were divorced soon afterwards. The letter goes on "It is so good of you to suggest giving some Rooseveltiana to Roosevelt House. Personally I would love to see you give it to Sagamore Hill instead." Details follow about the house at Sagamore Hill and about the "speech with the bullet hole through it" of which Mrs. Marquand owned a page. Mrs. Roosevelt concludes: "Indeed I remember our good times here with you and John. I remember one day just as you were leaving when you said: 'I do enjoy a day with our subversive friends!' How long ago that seems. Affectionately Eleanor." Single sheet typed both sides. Fine. unknown
