‎Eleanor Roosevelt Helps a Young Woman Continue her Education‎

‎Eleanor Roosevelt. First Lady. In this letter from the Great Depression Eleanor promises to connect a young woman whos education was interrupted by the Great Depression with a friend who "who would be willing to help you finish your education". Typed letter signed "Eleanor Roosevelt" . December 29th 1932. New York New York. 2 pages.

While many wives of politicians were relegated to professional hostesses Eleanor used her platform to advocate for the America people. The Great Depression was only three years along when Eleanor responded to this letter: "My dear Miss Kelly" she begins "I am sorry to hear of the struggle you and your mother have had and think your mother has been splendid to be able to accomplish as much as she did. I regret that I can not personally help you but the demands on me are so great that I cannot meet them personally." Eleanor was indeed working very hard. You can feel the haste in which she responds with the double 'personally' in this sentence perhaps a subconscious reference to the great personal responsibility that Eleanor took up as a public figure. Eleanor promises to pass on the letter "to a friend of mine in Connecticut" who will be able to help the young woman. "Very sincerely yours" she concludes before signing in her hand "Eleanor Roosevelt." Swayed by communications like these Eleanor worked tirelessly from her earliest days in the White House to improve conditions for women and children particularly those from the country's large migrant labor population. In very good condition. A moving letter demonstrating Eleanor's commitment to public welfare. unknown books‎

‎Eleanor Roosevelt Typed Letter Signed When she was US Delegate to the UN‎

‎Eleanor Roosevelt. Remarkable first lady as well known for her work as a social reformer as for her time in the White House. On her personal letterhead which lists the Park Sheraton Hotel as her address she writes a cryptic note to a Mr. Leiser: "Your letter did not reach me in time to send you the material you asked for by the 22nd." Typed letter with bold signature in deep blue fountainhead ink. May 22 1952. New York New York. 1 page.

This was written when Roosevelt was working as a delegate in the U.N. and serving as chairperson of the U.N.'s Commission of Human Rights so the mysterious content is likely related to her official duties. "I have asked the labor Department to send you the information" she promises. Eleanor Roosevelt remains one of the most accomplished first ladies in United States history and the energetic brisk tone to this letter belies just how many responsibilities she accepted on behalf of the vulnerable not just in America but also abroad. "I appreciate your kind words" she ends on a warm note before concluding "Very sincerely yours Eleanor Roosevelt". Dark brown dot in upper right corner; in near fine condition. unknown books‎

‎Group of Letters written by U.S. Senators and Congressmen/women addressed to Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt wife of President Franklin D. Roosevelt concerning the American Youth Congress 1940‎

‎
Group of 26 typed letters signed by twenty-one U.S. Congressmen/women and five U.S. Senators on the letterhead of the United States Congress and Senate and written to Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt dated 27 January to 2 February 1940. One letter is addressed to Mrs. James Helm Mrs. Roosevelt's secretary

Also included is a government printed pamphlet:

82d Congress 1st Session…. House Document No. 137. Guide to Subversive Organizations and Publications and Appendix Revised. May 14 1951. Prepared and released by the Committee on Un-American Activities U.S. House of Representatives Washington D.C. octavo 166 pp. wrappers corners at front & rear dog-eared small nicks to wrappers.

American Youth Congress AYC

All twenty-six letters are written by members of the U.S. Senate 5 and members of Congress 21 and all acknowledge the receipt of letters of invitation from Mrs. Roosevelt inviting them to a meeting on 5 February 1940 at the White House where a discussion of a "Citizenship Institute" would take place with some of the members of the American Youth Congress AYC. The AYC had the idea of founding the "Citizenship Institute" and sought Mrs. Roosevelt's support.

The AYC was an early youth voice organization composed of youth from all across the country to discuss the problems facing youth in the 1930s. It met several years in a row - one year it notably met on the lawn of the White House. The delegates are known to have caused a disturbance when they attempted to access the United States Congress. They focused on the draft which was taking youths at age 18 off to war. At the time in the United States one was not legally an adult in any way until the age of 21. They also focused on the economic exploitation of youth.

The formation of the AYC is also widely seen as a precursor to the establishment of the National Youth Administration. Both the AYC and the NYA are notable for the support which First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt lent to them.

The pamphlet included in this collection Guide to Subversive Organizations and Publications states that the "American Youth Congress" was "subversive" and "Communist." It states that "it originated in 1934 and has been controlled by Communists and manipulated by them to influence the thought of American youth." Further it states that it was "One of the principal fronts of the Communist Party" and "prominently identified with the White House picket line…under the immediate auspices of the American Peace Mobilization" which is also cited in this pamphlet as subversive and Communist. This pamphlet further goes on to mention that the American Youth Congress was "launched during August of 1934 and for about 7 years …one of the most influential front organizations ever established by the American Communist Party." The "purpose of the Young Communist League in controlling and building the American Youth Congress is the same as in its other youth groups namely to build up a united front to push the objectives of and produce cadres for the Communist Party among persons to whom they would be unable to make a direct approach."

The twenty-six letters in response to Mrs. Roosevelt's invitations were written by the following individuals:

U.S. Congressmen/women:Michael J. Bradley PA signed by his secretary V.A. Davis; Joseph E. Casey MA; John M. Coffee WA; Matthew A. Dunn; Thomas F. Ford CA; Frank W. Fries IL; Lee E. Mead NY.

Two notable letters in this collection were written by early women members of Congress:

Edith Norse Rogers 1881-1960

Edith Norse Rogers was an American social welfare volunteer and politician who was one of the first women to serve in the United States Congress. She was the first woman elected to Congress from Massachusetts. Until 2012 she was the longest serving Congresswoman. In her 35 years in the House of Representatives she was a powerful voice for veterans and sponsored seminal legislation including the Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944 commonly known as the G.I. Bill which provided educational and financial benefits for veterans returning home from World War II the 1942 bill that created the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps WAAC and the 1943 bill that created the Women's Army Corps WAC. She was also instrumental in bringing federal appropriations to her constituency Massachusetts's 5th congressional district.

Mary Teresa Norton 1875-1959

Mary Teresa Norton was an American politician. Typed letter signed "Eleanor Roosevelt" on her personal letterhead. April 28th 1947. New York New York. 1 page.

In 1940 Eleanor and Franklin co-founded the U.S. Committee for the Care of European Children otherwise known as USCOM to respond to the humanitarian emergency posed by the thousands of children who had lost parents and caregivers to concentration camps. ‎My Days.‎

‎New York: Dodge Publishing Company 1938. First edition of this firsthand look of everyday life in the White House by Eleanor Roosevelt. Octavo original cloth frontispiece of Roosevelt. Presentation copy inscribed by the author on the half-title page "To Miss Trefether With a Merry Xmas from Eleanor Roosevelt." Introduction by Malvina Thompson Scheider. Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Rare and desirable signed and inscribed. First Lady for 12 years and an enduring presence among the world's most admired women Eleanor Roosevelt reached millions of Americans through her syndicated newspaper column. This collection a representative sampling of a decade of "My Day" pieces reveals a First Lady unconventional for her time in her role as the president's peripatetic and reliable observer of world affairs yet deeply traditional in observance of the rituals of family and friendships. As an advocate of progressive social programs she was often the target of brickbats and caricature. Yet typical devotion to her can be found in a quote here of Adlai Stevenson "Her glow . . . warmed the world." An ability to laugh at herself to triumph over personal adversity in her own and in her chil dren's marriages and a genuine interest in people are reflected in these columns. ‎ROOSEVELT ELEANOR‎

‎Personal Badges for the 1960 Democratic National Convention; with Typed Letter Signed‎

‎Los Angeles: np 1960. FIRST EDITION. Fine. ELEANOR ROOSEVELT'S OFFICIAL CONVENTION BADGES FOR THE 1960 DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION. With a signed letter from Roosevelt to her good friend Mayris Chaney concerning her arrival at the convention. TWO BADGES: Decorative medals held with red-white-and-blue ribbon the first reading "Mrs. F.D. Roosevelt / Former First Lady" on two metal bars between beautiful engraved patriotic designs at the top and bottom surrounding the text "United States of America" and "1960 Democratic National Convention Los Angeles"; the second badge again with the beautiful patriotic emblems reads "Honored Guest". The medals include the original box.

On July 10 1960 the day before the Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles Eleanor Roosevelt refused to ride in a limousine to a reception preferring to walk half a mile with reporters. The absence of former President Harry Truman underscored the Democrats' break with the past and cast a warm light on former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt who attended the convention to support the faltering and ultimately doomed Presidential Campaign of Adlai Stevenson. In speaking for Stevenson Roosevelt questioned whether Kennedy's Catholic faith might cost him votes and said he didn't have the support of African Americans. Instead she backed a Stevenson-Kennedy political ticket. This trip in 1960 proved to be the final Political Convention which she attended. After the election Roosevelt chaired the John F. Kennedy administration's ground-breaking Committee which helped start Second-wave Feminism the "Presidential Commission on the Status of Women." In 1999 she was ranked in the top ten of Gallup's List of Most Widely Admired People of the 20th Century.

Her letter to Mayris Chaney included in this collection is typed on Roosevelt's personal New York City letterhead and reads in full:

June 24 1960
Dearest Tiny:

I have had another change in plans and will arrive the night of July 10th getting in at 7:30 p.m. but you need not meet me as Frankie is having a car and driver at my disposal.

Let's hope this is the last change! Anyhow it means I will be able to come to you sooner than I expected and this is a joy.
With much love
Devotedly
signed E.R.

handwritten Frankie is meeting me & - if avail we can come for you later after dinner.

Mayris Chaney Mrs. Hershey Martin was a renowned dancer who worked with Roosevelt in the Office of Civilian Defense and one of her closet friends for almost twenty years. Their friendship began in the early thirties after Roosevelt's bodyguard Earl Miller introduced his charge to Chaney and her dance partner Eddie Fox. Roosevelt felt so at ease with Martin that she quickly nicknamed her "Tiny" included her in the close circle of friends with whom she could relax in private at Val-Kill and the White House in their homes and on vacation and served as Godmother to Martin's daughter Anna Eleanor named after Eleanor Roosevelt. The letter includes the original mailing envelope.
