Eleanor Roosevelt Helps a Young Woman Continue her Education
Eleanor Roosevelt. First Lady. In this letter from the Great Depression Eleanor promises to connect a young woman whos education was interrupted by the Great Depression with a friend who "who would be willing to help you finish your education". Typed letter signed "Eleanor Roosevelt" . December 29th 1932. New York New York. 2 pages.

While many wives of politicians were relegated to professional hostesses Eleanor used her platform to advocate for the America people. The Great Depression was only three years along when Eleanor responded to this letter: "My dear Miss Kelly" she begins "I am sorry to hear of the struggle you and your mother have had and think your mother has been splendid to be able to accomplish as much as she did. I regret that I can not personally help you but the demands on me are so great that I cannot meet them personally." Eleanor was indeed working very hard. You can feel the haste in which she responds with the double 'personally' in this sentence perhaps a subconscious reference to the great personal responsibility that Eleanor took up as a public figure. Eleanor promises to pass on the letter "to a friend of mine in Connecticut" who will be able to help the young woman. "Very sincerely yours" she concludes before signing in her hand "Eleanor Roosevelt." Swayed by communications like these Eleanor worked tirelessly from her earliest days in the White House to improve conditions for women and children particularly those from the country's large migrant labor population. In very good condition. A moving letter demonstrating Eleanor's commitment to public welfare. unknown books

Roosevelt Eleanor
Eleanor Roosevelt Typed Letter Signed When she was US Delegate to the UN
Eleanor Roosevelt. Remarkable first lady as well known for her work as a social reformer as for her time in the White House. On her personal letterhead which lists the Park Sheraton Hotel as her address she writes a cryptic note to a Mr. Leiser: "Your letter did not reach me in time to send you the material you asked for by the 22nd." Typed letter with bold signature in deep blue fountainhead ink. May 22 1952. New York New York. 1 page.

This was written when Roosevelt was working as a delegate in the U.N. and serving as chairperson of the U.N.'s Commission of Human Rights so the mysterious content is likely related to her official duties. "I have asked the labor Department to send you the information" she promises. Eleanor Roosevelt remains one of the most accomplished first ladies in United States history and the energetic brisk tone to this letter belies just how many responsibilities she accepted on behalf of the vulnerable not just in America but also abroad. "I appreciate your kind words" she ends on a warm note before concluding "Very sincerely yours Eleanor Roosevelt". Dark brown dot in upper right corner; in near fine condition. unknown books

Group of 26 typed letters signed by twenty-one U.S. Congressmen/women and five U.S. Senators on the letterhead of the United States Congress and Senate and written to Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt dated 27 January to 2 February 1940. One letter is addressed to Mrs. James Helm Mrs. Roosevelt's secretary

Also included is a government printed pamphlet:

82d Congress 1st Session…. House Document No. 137. Guide to Subversive Organizations and Publications and Appendix Revised. May 14 1951. Prepared and released by the Committee on Un-American Activities U.S. House of Representatives Washington D.C. octavo 166 pp. wrappers corners at front & rear dog-eared small nicks to wrappers.

American Youth Congress AYC

All twenty-six letters are written by members of the U.S. Senate 5 and members of Congress 21 and all acknowledge the receipt of letters of invitation from Mrs. Roosevelt inviting them to a meeting on 5 February 1940 at the White House where a discussion of a "Citizenship Institute" would take place with some of the members of the American Youth Congress AYC. The AYC had the idea of founding the "Citizenship Institute" and sought Mrs. Roosevelt's support.

The AYC was an early youth voice organization composed of youth from all across the country to discuss the problems facing youth in the 1930s. It met several years in a row - one year it notably met on the lawn of the White House. The delegates are known to have caused a disturbance when they attempted to access the United States Congress. They focused on the draft which was taking youths at age 18 off to war. At the time in the United States one was not legally an adult in any way until the age of 21. They also focused on the economic exploitation of youth.

The formation of the AYC is also widely seen as a precursor to the establishment of the National Youth Administration. Both the AYC and the NYA are notable for the support which First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt lent to them.

The pamphlet included in this collection Guide to Subversive Organizations and Publications states that the "American Youth Congress" was "subversive" and "Communist." It states that "it originated in 1934 and has been controlled by Communists and manipulated by them to influence the thought of American youth." Further it states that it was "One of the principal fronts of the Communist Party" and "prominently identified with the White House picket line…under the immediate auspices of the American Peace Mobilization" which is also cited in this pamphlet as subversive and Communist. This pamphlet further goes on to mention that the American Youth Congress was "launched during August of 1934 and for about 7 years …one of the most influential front organizations ever established by the American Communist Party." The "purpose of the Young Communist League in controlling and building the American Youth Congress is the same as in its other youth groups namely to build up a united front to push the objectives of and produce cadres for the Communist Party among persons to whom they would be unable to make a direct approach."

The twenty-six letters in response to Mrs. Roosevelt's invitations were written by the following individuals:

U.S. Congressmen/women:Michael J. Typed letter signed "Eleanor Roosevelt" on her personal letterhead. April 28th 1947. New York New York. 1 page.

In 1940 Eleanor and Franklin co-founded the U.S. Committee for the Care of European Children otherwise known as USCOM to respond to the humanitarian emergency posed by the thousands of children who had lost parents and caregivers to concentration camps. USCOM is the subject of this letter from the former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt to Ken W. Purdy editor of PARADE Magazine. The letter is dated just one day after PARADE's publication of the article captioned "Haven in America" indicating Mrs. Roosevelt's eagerness to respond. Eleanor writes that she "must express her appreciation" for an article from Parade Magazine about USCOM's work arranging transit foster care education and long term physical and mental health services for the orphans of World War II. USCOM's work she writes "is very close to my heart" : "through it war-orphaned children found in our zones of occupation overseas are brought to America.and given the opportunity to grow up to become useful American citizens of the future." Parade's article she continues "made clear to every reader . the priceless value of the program to those most tragic victims of World War II -- the orphaned children."
