Inscribed by Eleanor Roosevelt on the half-title page "For Marjorie friedgood with good wishes Eleanor Roosevelt." Very good in a very good dust jacket. Jacket by Rafael Palacios. Following her husband's death Eleanor Roosevelt remained active in politics for the rest of her life. She pressed the United States to join and support the United Nations and became one of its first delegates. She served as the first chair of the UN Commission on Human Rights and oversaw the drafting of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Later she chaired the John F. Kennedy administration's Presidential Commission on the Status of Women. By the time of her death she was regarded as "one of the most esteemed women in the world"; she was called "the object of almost universal respect" in her New York Times obituary. This is the first example we have seen signed by Eleanor Roosevelt. Roosevelt and Tor celebrate the role of the UN as both an instrument for preserving peace and as an agency for improving the health education and productivity of people around the world. "Although the UN officially came into being at San Francisco in 1945" they write it "is actually a highly complex international organization which has been built upon a foundation that has been long in the making a foundation constructed of the long-ancient hopes and dreams the slowly accumulated human group knowledge and the ever-developing conscious reasoning of thousands of ages of man." Written at the height of the Cold War and decolonization movement the book expresses the vaunting-almost utopian-hopes of activists like Mrs. Roosevelt who passionately believed in the power of the UN to achieve some form of world government and thereby avert the outbreak of a third world war. Association copy inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper "To Bill from his loving grandmere who is also the author Eleanor Roosevelt Xmas 1935." The recipient was Roosevelt's grandson William Donner Roosevelt son of Elliot Roosevelt and grandson of the author Eleanor Roosevelt. A Trip to Washington with Bobby and Betty is one of the more uncommon books by Roosevelt and one that is not often found signed or inscribed especially with such a nice association. In near fine condition. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Eleanor Roosevelt was an American political leader who used her influence as an active First Lady from 1933 to 1945 to promote the New Deal policies of her husband President Franklin D. Roosevelt as well as taking a prominent role as an advocate for civil rights. After her husband's death in 1945 she continued to be an internationally prominent author and speaker for the New Deal coalition. She was a suffragist who worked to enhance the status of working women although she opposed the Equal Rights Amendment because she believed it would adversely affect women. In the 1940s she was one of the co-founders of Freedom House and supported the formation of the United Nations. Eleanor Roosevelt founded the UN Association of the United States in 1943 to advance support for the formation of the UN. She was a delegate to the UN General Assembly from 1945 and 1952 a job for which she was appointed by President Harry S. Truman and confirmed by the United States Congress. During her time at the United Nations chaired the committee that drafted and approved the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Inscribed by Eleanor Roosevelt to her eldest son in black fountain pen ink on the verso of the frontispiece: "To my son James / Dec. 23rd 1932." Eleanor Roosevelt was orphaned early in life her mother having died first followed by her father when she was nine. During her lifetime various relatives and friends returned her father's letters to her and so in 1932 as her husband was campaigning for and elected to the Presidency Mrs. Roosevelt published this collection of her father's letters which deal mostly with hunting big game in Africa. An affectionate and intimate letter in which Eleanor Roosevelt reacts to the news of the Marquands' separation: "I am so very sorry to hear that you and John are separated at the moment and I do hope most fervently that it will not be permanent. Many times I have seen patience win against what had appeared to be great odds." But not in this case - the Marquands were divorced soon afterwards. The letter goes on "It is so good of you to suggest giving some Rooseveltiana to Roosevelt House. Personally I would love to see you give it to Sagamore Hill instead." Details follow about the house at Sagamore Hill and about the "speech with the bullet hole through it" of which Mrs. Marquand owned a page. Mrs. Roosevelt concludes: "Indeed I remember our good times here with you and John. I remember one day just as you were leaving when you said: 'I do enjoy a day with our subversive friends!' Fine copy in custom blue cloth clamshell box. Illustrated from photographs by R.B. Thompson. 75 pp. 1 vols. 4to. FDR's visit to the Galapagos with Sailfishing at Cocos Island. The very scarce printed memorial printed on board the ship of FDR's Third Presidential Cruise on the USS Houston from the July 14 to August 9 1938 on his way to the Galapagos Islands FDR was the first U.S. President to visit them. In the introduction to the booklet one of the editors records that "Shortly after the cruise commenced certain members of the HOUSTON personnel conceived the idea of publishing a book which would relate graphically all of the interesting incidents happening on board our ship. We trust that the following pages will keep alive fond memories of a happy cruise with as grand a shipmate it has ever been our privilege to meet." There are numerous photos of Roosevelt with the crew and the Presidential party shots of the Galapagos and its strange fauna and a good deal of wit and raillery in the text and photos directed toward the "pollywogs" on the part of the "shellbacks" in anticipation of the approaching traditional ceremony of "crossing the line." The ship called at Cocos Island and the log records successful sport fishing for sailfish in those waters. The U.S.S. Houston was sunk during the war. A wonderfully light-hearted and very scarce piece for the FDR collector at a time when the clouds of a world war were gathering on the horizon. ‎Lithographic broadside "D-Day Prayer.‎

‎Washington D.C Christmas 1944. Limited edition of this rare broadside of the "D-Day Prayer" one of only 50 printed copies issued by President Franklin D. Roosevelt for his close friends handsomely printed in gothic type with red blue and gold ink textual embellishments. The broadside measures 14 inches by 21 inches printed in black gothic type capital letters and portions of the heading in red and blue ink. Double matted and framed. The entire piece measures 20.5 inches by 28 inches. A rare and desirable piece of history. On June 6th 1944 while American and Allied troops stormed the beaches at Normandy Roosevelt released the text of a prayer in the afternoon which he then delivered by radio to the nation at 10:00 p.m. Eastern time. It is estimated according to Andrew Malcolm that as many as 100 million people listened to it. "The prayer does not invoke one faith but the appeal to God is bold and unapologetic. The D-Day Prayer was an extraordinary event in U.S. religious history" Malcolm. The D-Day Prayer reads in full: "Last night when I spoke with you about the fall of Rome I knew at that moment that troops of the United States and our Allies were crossing the Channel in another and greater operation. It has come to pass with success thus far. And so in this poignant hour I ask you to join with me in prayer: Almighty God: Our sons pride of our nation this day have set upon a mighty endeavor a struggle to preserve our Republic our religion and our civilization and to set free a suffering humanity. Lead them straight and true; give strength to their arms stoutness to their hearts steadfastness in their faith. They will need Thy blessings. Their road will be long and hard. For the enemy is strong. He may hurl back our forces. Success may not come with rushing speed but we shall return again and again; and we know that by Thy grace and by the righteousness of our cause our sons will triumph. They will be sore tried by night and by day without rest--until the victory is won. The darkness will be rent by noise and flame. Men's souls will be shaken with the violences of war. For these men are lately drawn from the ways of peace. They fight not for the lust of conquest. They fight to end conquest. They fight to liberate. This copy belonged to the descendants of John Boettiger who was married to Roosevelt's daughter Anna in 1944 they later divorced. According to family lore Boettiger and Anna assisted in the writing of the speech. According to Curtis Roosevelt Anna's son and John's stepson in his memoir Too Close to the Sun: Growing Up in the Shadow of My Grandparents: Franklin and Eleanor in the spring of 1944 "just before the invasion of Normandy Papa F.D.R. had asked Mummy and Popsie to help him write his D-Day message which he intended to broadcast to Americans on the day that tide-turning operation was launched.
