ROOSEVELT Franklin D. 1882 1945
Signed Framed Embossed Panel Engraving
1944. unbound. Inscribed in a calligrapher's hand: "To E.L. Alperson for his help in the fight against infantile paralysis" no date circa 1944. Alperson 1895 - 1969 was an American film producer at Warner Brothers who later formed Grand National Distributors as an outlet for independent films in the 1940s. In 1942 he became the general manager of RKO Pictures' theater circuit and it is likely that his work with the March of Dimes earned him this personally signed engraving from the President. 13.75 x 10.5 inches set in a gorgeous wood burgundy stained frame measuring 17 x 14 inches. Roosevelt has signed this boldly with a brown fountain pen. The engraving has a few scattered small spots but is still in near fine condition.<br/><br/> Evidence suggests that Roosevelt signed this piece in early 1944. In February 1943 motion picture theaters organized a drive to raise funds for the March of Dimes. On his birthday January 30 in 1944 Roosevelt signed lithographs such as this one in order to thank those whose work helped make the drive successful. According to auction records Roosevelt presented a similar engraving to Frank Meyer an executive at Paramout Pictures Corporation. Accompanying Meyer's engraving when it was sold at auction was a copy of a book titled "So They May Walk Again.A Book of good Deeds / Report of Collectors by Motion Picture Theatres / March of Dimes / February 18 to 24 1943 / In Co-Operation with National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis."<br/><br/> unknown books

Roosevelt Franklin D.; Pius XII Pope; Myron Charles Taylor
Wartime Correspondence Between President Roosevelt and Pope Pius XII with an Introudciton & Explanatory Notes By Myron C. Taylor Personal Representative of the President .to His Holiness Pope Pius XII Frances Perkins' copy
New York: The MacMillan Co 1947. Octavo. xii.127 pages Inscribed:" to Hon. Frances Perkins with kind regards Myron C. Taylor April 12 1947" While she was the first woman in a President's cabinet her contributions to the unfair conditions in the workplace led to the 40 hour work week workman's compensation and she emphasized to FDR the need for Social Security. When she met with major labor leaders and the large corporations in April of 1937 most of the heads of big business despised her. Myron C. Taylor was head of U.S. Steel but he agreed that good economics should do more on behalf of workers and hopefully make strikes unnecessary. In 1938 FDR sent him to the International Conference on behalf of Jews who were attempting to flee Europe while the U.S. and other countries had very narrow immigration laws often aimed at Jews. The book deals with: The first exchange of messages -- The dark days of 1940 -- "The seekers of light ad the seekers of peace" -- Easter April 1941 -- Assistance to the Soviet Union -- America at war -- The turning point of the war -- The invasion of Italy -- Toward "true and enduring peace" -- The death of the President. The owner has placed a U.S. stamp honoring Frances Perkins on the front pastedown. Bound in 1/4 light borwn cloth over red cloth spine lettered and decorated in gilt. A fine bright copy. ROOSEVELT FRANKLIN DELANO
Fish can be transported in meat trucks. Typed Letter Signed on White House stationery bearing watermark of Presidential seal from aboard the "U.S.S. Houston" 2 separate 4to pp Oct. 14 1935
Franklin D. Roosevelt decides a legal question allowing fish to be distributed in refrigerated meat trucks. "there appears to be nothing which would hinder the fishing industry from utilizing the refrigerator cars belonging to others" Roosevelt writes to U. S. Marshall John J. Murphy Boston MA agreeing to allow the fish companies to transport fish in refrigerated cars belonging to meat packing companies. Murphy sent a 5 1/2 page typed memorandum included explaining in great detail the transportation problem faced by the fish industry. Roosevelt agrees to intervene to facilitate this practical solution. Roosevelt begins with a review of the problem Murphy described. "You state that that industry fish industry has a limited market because refrigerator cars used for transporting meat to the East are returned empty. You attribute the existence of this situation to the so-called 'Consent Decree' and propose that steps be taken to remove the restrictions in order that the facilities which are now employed for the distribution of meats may be made available to the fishing fruit and vegetable industries." Roosevelt reviews the "Consent Decree" explaining that is "was the climax of a suit brought by the Government under the Sherman Anti-Trust Act.against five of the leading packers in 1920" preventing them from using their "facilities in the handling of a large variety of non-meat food products including fish." The Government believed that the packers planned to extend their monopolistic practices to other food products. "It was on this account that packers were required to discontinue any dealing in many non-meat lines." Roosevelt reviews Supreme Court decisions which twice upheld the restriction noting the Court "refused to permit a modification of the decree." FDR then reasons that the Decree affects the designated large companies "there appears to be nothing which would hinder the fishing industry from utilizing the refrigerator cars belonging to others who ship perishable commodities to the East. It is my understanding that there is a heavy movement of empty refrigerator cars westward and these include both those which are owned by carriers and whose which are privately owned. If the 'Consent Decree' were modified." to allow packers to transport fish a question would then arise about cost. He advised Murphy to "look into these particular phases of the problem." Roosevelt concludes with a statement about the importance of transporting food across the country offering to arrange a conference among the various governmental entities involved. He notes the divergent roles played by the Department of Justice and the Interstate Commerce Commission in light of the Supreme Court restrictions against the meat packing industry. Signed in full "Franklin D. Roosevelt." Very slight chipping at margin folds some soiling at margins. The USS Houston from which FDR wrote our detailed letter was a Northampton-class cruiser of the U.S. Navy first launched in 1929 but sunk in the Battle of Sunda Strait on March 1 1942. President Roosevelt cruised aboard the USS Houston a number of times during his tenure as President . At least four journeys are recorded including this one corresponding with our Oct. 14 letter from October 2-23 1935 see fdr library at Marist College Day by Day events. ." On October 14 FDR's "Day by Day" listing notes "anchored to the eastward of Pedro Gonzales Island" and also notes that he was going fishing with Governor Schley of the Panama Canal. He later traveled with Schley to and through the Gatum locks. The Wikipedia entry for the USS Houston shows a photo of the ship off San Diego in October 1935 "with President Franklin D. Roosevelt on board. She is flying an admiral four-star flag at her foremast peak and the Presidential flag at her mainmast peak. Roosevelt appointed his correspondent John J. Murphy to the position of the U.S. Marshal for the District of Massachusetts in 1935. He served until 1939. Previous to that posting Murphy was the first Democratic Mayor of Somerville Mass. 1930-1934 and President of the Boston-based Franklin D. Roosevelt League. Murphy being from the Boston area would no doubt have been involved in or certainly aware of the fishing industry in Gloucester during the early 1930s. An article on July 15 2010 citing pieces in the New York Times from April through June of 1933 about the fishing industry indicated there had been a series of interactions between the President and the depressed fishing community in Gloucester during 1933. There was a shortage of cod and a surplus of mackerel. Fisherman were known to be dumping their catch to protest the low prices being paid for the fish. They wanted subsidies similar to the aid FDR had given farmer. The President met with the fishermen seemed to be in support of them but on his next visit to Gloucester was asked where that aid he promised was. Nothing had been done to alleviate the problems of the fishing industry. FDR's decision to facilitate transportation of fish as reflected in our letter was made against this problematic background. unknown books

Text planographed from typescript. 1 vols. 4to. Rare FDR Log: A Radio Message from Ernest Hemingway. A log of FDR's inspection cruise of naval bases in the British West Indies. The log is a detailed narrative of the President's activities and the progress of the ship he traveled on the Tuscaloosa. As was customary on these cruises Roosevelt combined sport fishing with his official duties. Opposite page 15 a fine portrait of FDR seated with rod in hand is entitled "The President trolls though Mona Passage." The text for 10 December reads: "At 1000 while proceeding through the Mona Passage sped was reduced to 7 knots while the President trolled from the stern. The water here was over 1500 feet deep and the president's decision to try his luck was based mainly on the contents of a radio message which he had received from Ernest Hemingway recommending the locality as one in which many big fish had been caught and suggesting the use of a feathered hook baited with a piece of pork rind. The President trolled for an hour or more without even a strike and so fishing operations were discontinued at 1130 following which speed was increased to 25 knots." In addition to highlights of official business the log records the fishing activities throughout the cruise Harry Hopkins hooks a 36 inch Grouper but as it was landed by Admiral Mcintire it was "not a legitimate catch for determining fishing honors two members of the party having handled the rod." This log identifies Maj. Gen. Edwin L Watson FDR's military aide as "Pa" and so his authorship of an earlier log can now be assigned. We have never seen this log. The only other copy recorded is in the Library of Congress. Halter p. 192 records only Library of Congress copy unknown books

Register of the Riverside Hotel with Roosevelt's Check-In Signature on the Day of the Lusitania Sinking
Eastport ME 29 April - 17 August 1915. Hardcover. Very Good. Contemporary half calf; folio 16x10 inches; pp. 152 guest signatures on printed sheets interspersed with advertising leaves. Binding heavily worn; first and last few leaves a little warped and water-stained not affecting Roosevelt's signature which appears on 7 May 1915. <br/><br/>The Assistant Secretary of the Navy was the final guest of the 7 May 1915 registering on his family's behalf as "Mr. & Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt Washington." The family took two rooms presumably to accommodate their four children and any household staff who accompanied them on the journey. The hotel was in Eastport in the eastern tip of Maine and the Roosevelts were likely en route to their summer retreat at Campobello Island Canada a short ferry ride away. The RMS Lusitania had been torpedoed at 2:10 that afternoon probably before Roosevelt signed in though the news may not have reached remote Eastport by then. The news would have been of direct professional interest to Roosevelt; he would soon agitate to use the attack as a reason to declare war on Germany. hardcover books

Typed Letter Signed
New York: np 1921. POIGNANT SIGNED LETTER FROM ROOSEVELT ON HIS RESOLVE NOT TO LET POLIO DEFEAT HIM. Very Good. POIGNANT SIGNED LETTER FROM ROOSEVELT ON HIS RESOLVE NOT TO LET POLIO DEFEAT HIM. Written just two months after being struck by polio at his summer home at Campbello Island Roosevelt writes on October 5 1921 to Henry Waring Chadeayne Orange County lawyer and politician: <br /> <br /> My dear Mr. Chadeayne:<br /> <br /> I appreciate very much the action of the Democratic County Committee of Orange County in directing you to convey their sympathy to me. I also appreciate exceedingly the personal good wishes which you added on your own account. <br /> <br /> The doctors tell me I am getting along splendidly and I hope to be back in the game before so very long. <br /> <br /> Very sincerely yours<br /> <br /> signed Franklin D. Roosevelt<br /> <br /> By October 5 1921 the outlook for Roosevelt looked bleak. He was already suffering from paralysis with little hope for improvement yet from the beginning Roosevelt fought with extraordinary resolve to overcome any limitations caused by his disease. And get "back in the game" he did becoming governor of New York in 1929 and of course U.S. President from 1933 to 1945. <br /> <br /> Though written on Roosevelt's Fidelity and Deposit Company of Maryland's personal letterhead it is almost certain that the letter was typed either at Presbyterian Hospital or else dictated by him and brought to him for signing for on October 5 1921 Roosevelt was still in the hospital he was released on October 28th. <br /> <br /> Note: This is one of the earliest Roosevelt letters referencing his disease that has ever been on the market. <br /> <br /> New York: October 5 1921. Quarto one page. Expected folds. Fine condition with original envelope postmarked October 6 1921. An inspiring letter from one of the United States's greatest figures. np unknown books

Roosevelt Franklin Delano
Typed letter signed "Franklin D Roosevelt" as Governor of New York to New York City Mayor James J. Walker summoning him to answer charges made by the Seabury commission. WITH: The original telegram from Roosevelt to Walker bearing the same message
Albany 1932. 1 p. 4to. Single sheet of State of New York Executive Chamber letterhead with gold seal at head. Paste action from old mat at upper and lower margins old folds signature slightly smudged. 1 p. 4to. Roosevelt summons Jimmy Walker to answer corruption charges. Less than a month after he'd accepted the Democratic nomination for President and on the verge of setting out on the campaign trail then Governor Roosevelt summons New York City mayor Jimmy "Beau James" Walker to answer corruption charges.<br/><br/>"I confirm my telegram to you today reading as follows: 'I request that you appear before me . in Albany on Thursday August eleventh . in order that you may be heard in respect to the charges filed with me by Honorable Samuel Seabury . and others and your answer thereto. I expect that in accordance with my telegram to you yesterday your rejoinder to Judge Seabury's reply will be in my hands next Monday.'" Roosevelt's telegram is also present.<br/><br/>The Seabury Commission brought to light one of the most notorious corruption schemes in New York City's history whereby innocent citizens usually working class women were arrested on false charges of prostitution and to avoid jail were made to pay fines which lined the pockets of magistrate court judges attorneys and police officers. In the course of the investigation it also uncovered large sums of money paid to Mayor Walker by businessmen seeking city contracts. Roosevelt's summons to Walker came as the negative publicity generated by the scandal threatened to cause problems for him during the campaign. Walker spared Roosevelt the trouble of removing him from office by resigning on September 1.<br/><br/>"The insouciant Walker was master of ceremonies for New York in the Jazz Age. Rarely rising before ten in the morning he could be found at Broadway openings ringsides parades or casinos-almost any place but city hall. He took seven vacations during his first two years in office. A notorious womanizer he also began a widely publicized affair with Betty Compton an actress twenty-three years his junior. Local newspapers fueled his popularity by celebrating his exploits while ignoring his indiscretions" ANB. unknown books
