‎Log of the President's Inspection Cruise through the West Indies on Board the U.S.S. Tuscaloosa. 3-14 December 1940‎

‎N.p. Washington D.C. 1941. Illustrated with map five photographs. vii 25 pp. Title planographed from printed copy. Text planographed from typescript. 1 vols. 4to. Green wrappers; printed in black; stapled. Fine. Blue cloth clamshell box. Illustrated with map five photographs. vii 25 pp. Title planographed from printed copy. Text planographed from typescript. 1 vols. 4to. Rare FDR Log: A Radio Message from Ernest Hemingway. A log of FDR's inspection cruise of naval bases in the British West Indies. The log is a detailed narrative of the President's activities and the progress of the ship he traveled on the Tuscaloosa. As was customary on these cruises Roosevelt combined sport fishing with his official duties. Opposite page 15 a fine portrait of FDR seated with rod in hand is entitled "The President trolls though Mona Passage." The text for 10 December reads: "At 1000 while proceeding through the Mona Passage sped was reduced to 7 knots while the President trolled from the stern. The water here was over 1500 feet deep and the president's decision to try his luck was based mainly on the contents of a radio message which he had received from Ernest Hemingway recommending the locality as one in which many big fish had been caught and suggesting the use of a feathered hook baited with a piece of pork rind. The President trolled for an hour or more without even a strike and so fishing operations were discontinued at 1130 following which speed was increased to 25 knots." In addition to highlights of official business the log records the fishing activities throughout the cruise Harry Hopkins hooks a 36 inch Grouper but as it was landed by Admiral Mcintire it was "not a legitimate catch for determining fishing honors two members of the party having handled the rod." This log identifies Maj. Gen. Edwin L Watson FDR's military aide as "Pa" and so his authorship of an earlier log can now be assigned. We have never seen this log. The only other copy recorded is in the Library of Congress. Halter p. 192 records only Library of Congress copy unknown books‎

‎Register of the Riverside Hotel with Roosevelt's Check-In Signature on the Day of the Lusitania Sinking‎

‎Eastport ME 29 April - 17 August 1915. Hardcover. Very Good. Contemporary half calf; folio 16x10 inches; pp. 152 guest signatures on printed sheets interspersed with advertising leaves. Binding heavily worn; first and last few leaves a little warped and water-stained not affecting Roosevelt's signature which appears on 7 May 1915. <br/><br/>The Assistant Secretary of the Navy was the final guest of the 7 May 1915 registering on his family's behalf as "Mr. & Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt Washington." The family took two rooms presumably to accommodate their four children and any household staff who accompanied them on the journey. The hotel was in Eastport in the eastern tip of Maine and the Roosevelts were likely en route to their summer retreat at Campobello Island Canada a short ferry ride away. The RMS Lusitania had been torpedoed at 2:10 that afternoon probably before Roosevelt signed in though the news may not have reached remote Eastport by then. The news would have been of direct professional interest to Roosevelt; he would soon agitate to use the attack as a reason to declare war on Germany. hardcover books‎

‎Typed Letter Signed‎

‎New York: np 1921. POIGNANT SIGNED LETTER FROM ROOSEVELT ON HIS RESOLVE NOT TO LET POLIO DEFEAT HIM. Very Good. POIGNANT SIGNED LETTER FROM ROOSEVELT ON HIS RESOLVE NOT TO LET POLIO DEFEAT HIM. Written just two months after being struck by polio at his summer home at Campbello Island Roosevelt writes on October 5 1921 to Henry Waring Chadeayne Orange County lawyer and politician: <br /> <br /> My dear Mr. Chadeayne:<br /> <br /> I appreciate very much the action of the Democratic County Committee of Orange County in directing you to convey their sympathy to me. I also appreciate exceedingly the personal good wishes which you added on your own account. <br /> <br /> The doctors tell me I am getting along splendidly and I hope to be back in the game before so very long. <br /> <br /> Very sincerely yours<br /> <br /> signed Franklin D. Roosevelt<br /> <br /> By October 5 1921 the outlook for Roosevelt looked bleak. He was already suffering from paralysis with little hope for improvement yet from the beginning Roosevelt fought with extraordinary resolve to overcome any limitations caused by his disease. And get "back in the game" he did becoming governor of New York in 1929 and of course U.S. President from 1933 to 1945. <br /> <br /> Though written on Roosevelt's Fidelity and Deposit Company of Maryland's personal letterhead it is almost certain that the letter was typed either at Presbyterian Hospital or else dictated by him and brought to him for signing for on October 5 1921 Roosevelt was still in the hospital he was released on October 28th. <br /> <br /> Note: This is one of the earliest Roosevelt letters referencing his disease that has ever been on the market. <br /> <br /> New York: October 5 1921. Quarto one page. Expected folds. Fine condition with original envelope postmarked October 6 1921. An inspiring letter from one of the United States's greatest figures. np unknown books‎

‎Typed letter signed "Franklin D Roosevelt" as Governor of New York to New York City Mayor James J. Walker summoning him to answer charges made by the Seabury commission. WITH: The original telegram from Roosevelt to Walker bearing the same message‎

‎Albany 1932. 1 p. 4to. Single sheet of State of New York Executive Chamber letterhead with gold seal at head. Paste action from old mat at upper and lower margins old folds signature slightly smudged. 1 p. 4to. Roosevelt summons Jimmy Walker to answer corruption charges. Less than a month after he'd accepted the Democratic nomination for President and on the verge of setting out on the campaign trail then Governor Roosevelt summons New York City mayor Jimmy "Beau James" Walker to answer corruption charges.<br/><br/>"I confirm my telegram to you today reading as follows: 'I request that you appear before me . in Albany on Thursday August eleventh . in order that you may be heard in respect to the charges filed with me by Honorable Samuel Seabury . and others and your answer thereto. I expect that in accordance with my telegram to you yesterday your rejoinder to Judge Seabury's reply will be in my hands next Monday.'" Roosevelt's telegram is also present.<br/><br/>The Seabury Commission brought to light one of the most notorious corruption schemes in New York City's history whereby innocent citizens usually working class women were arrested on false charges of prostitution and to avoid jail were made to pay fines which lined the pockets of magistrate court judges attorneys and police officers. In the course of the investigation it also uncovered large sums of money paid to Mayor Walker by businessmen seeking city contracts. Roosevelt's summons to Walker came as the negative publicity generated by the scandal threatened to cause problems for him during the campaign. Walker spared Roosevelt the trouble of removing him from office by resigning on September 1.<br/><br/>"The insouciant Walker was master of ceremonies for New York in the Jazz Age. Rarely rising before ten in the morning he could be found at Broadway openings ringsides parades or casinos-almost any place but city hall. He took seven vacations during his first two years in office. A notorious womanizer he also began a widely publicized affair with Betty Compton an actress twenty-three years his junior. Local newspapers fueled his popularity by celebrating his exploits while ignoring his indiscretions" ANB. unknown books‎

‎Sail On O Ship of State! The Longfellow Verse in Mr. Roosevelt’s Message to Mr. Churchill.‎

‎Raphael Tuck & Sons Ltd. 1941. Rare lithographic broadside signed by Franklin Delano Roosevelt as the thirty-second President of the United States and Winston S. Churchill as Prime Minster of the United Kingdom at the Atlantic Conference; one of only two known examples of this broadside specially printed at Churchill's direction and signed by both world leaders at their first wartime conference. One page the lithograph features the famed Henry Wadsworth Longfellow verse first used by FDR in a letter of support to Churchill before the United States entered the war and a galleon at sea. The letter sent the day before Roosevelt's third inauguration on January 20 1941 read in full "Dear Churchill Wendell Wilkie will give you this. He is truly helping to keep politics out over here. I think this verse applies to you people as it does to us: "Sail on Oh Ship of State! Sail on Oh Union strong and great. The historic secret Atlantic Conference was held between August 9th and 12th 1941 on a warship anchored in Placentia Bay Newfoundland. At that momentous meeting the two leaders and their military aides agreed upon critical policies for the conduct of a joint war against Germany even though the U.S. was still officially neutral and would remain so until December 8. The meetings culminated in the Atlantic Charter a declaration of principles issued a few days after the conference. Often compared to Wilson's Fourteen Points the Charter also laid the foundation for the United Nations Declaration signed by 26 nations in January 1942. Raphael Tuck & Sons, Ltd. unknown books‎
