Frank Anne; Introduction by Eleanor Roosevelt
Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl.
Garden City NY: Doubleday & Company 1952. Uncorrected proof of the first American edition of "one of the wisest and most moving commentaries on war" Eleanor Roosevelt. Octavo original wrappers. Introduction by Eleanor Roosevelt. Translated from the Dutch by B.M. Mooyaart-Doubleday. This is the first example we have seen as only a few examples would have been produced for limited in-house production. Rare and desirable. Born in 1929 Anne Frank received a blank diary on her 13th birthday just weeks before she and her family went into hiding in Nazi-occupied Amsterdam. Here diary was later discovered in the attic in which she spent the last years of her life Anne Frank's remarkable diary has since become a world classic--a powerful reminder of the horrors of war and an eloquent testament to the human spirit. In 1942 with Nazis occupying Holland a thirteen-year-old Jewish girl and her family fled their home in Amsterdam and went into hiding. For the next two years until their whereabouts were betrayed to the Gestapo they and another family lived cloistered in the "Secret Annex" of an old office building. Cut off from the outside world they faced hunger boredom the constant cruelties of living in confined quarters and the ever-present threat of discovery and death. In her diary Anne Frank recorded vivid impressions of her experiences during this period. By turns thoughtful moving and amusing her account offers a fascinating commentary on human courage and frailty and a compelling self-portrait of a sensitive and spirited young woman whose promise was tragically cut short. Roosevelt four as President and one as Governor of New York. All of the letters concern the Eastern States Exposition an annual technological and agricultural fair held in Springfield Massachusetts. The fair was established by Joshua L. Brooks to promote agriculture and industry in New England. It was first held in 1917 and is still in existence today. Four of the letters in this archive are written to Brooks while the fifth was written to a local judge associated with the exposition. In each letter Roosevelt declines an invitation to attend Governors’ Day at the exposition. He also says positive words about the exposition. a TLS. 1pg. June 26 1931. Albany New York. A typed letter signed “Franklin D Roosevelt†as Governor of New York on official “State of New York Executive Chamber†letterhead. “Dear Mr. Brooks:- Thank you very much for your letter of the 19th. ‘Governors’ Day’ sounds like a most interesting party and I do so wish that I could accept your invitation to be with you. However I plan to leave for Warm Springs on September 15th. As you know I did not get down there this spring at all. Incidentally I have decided that I will not leave the State except for my visit to the Round Table Conference in Virginia next week. Each time I step over the line the ory arises that I am campaigning. I am sure you will understand. Very sincerely yours Franklin D Rooseveltâ€. It is in very good condition. b TLS. 1pg. September 8 1936. The White House Washington. A typed letter signed “Franklin D Roosevelt†as President on White House letterhead. Roosevelt wrote to Judge William J. Granfield of Springfield Massachusetts. “My dear Judge Granfield: I received your letter of September fourth with its invitation for me to be the guest of honor on Governor’s Day at the Eastern States Exposition on September twentieth and twenty-first. Will you convey to President Joshua L. Brooks and to Mr. Charles A. Frazier General Manager of the Governor’s Day Committee and to the Trustees my very sincere regret that it will not be possible for me to accept this invitation of which I am deeply appreciative. May I express the hope that this meeting of the Governors of the ten North Atlantic States will not only be a very pleasant occasion but productive of fine results. Cordially yours Franklin D Rooseveltâ€. It is in fine condition with a central mailing fold and the original White House envelope. c TLS. 1pg. August 23 1937. The White House Washington. A typed letter signed “Franklin D Roosevelt†as President on White House letterhead. “My dear Mr. Brooks: May I thank you and through you the Trustees of the Eastern States Exposition for the kind invitation to be with you in Springfield on Governors’ Day September nineteenth and on Monday September twentieth next. I regret that I am unable to accept and to be with you and with the Governors who are to be your guests on this interesting occasion. Please accept my sincere thanks. I hope the Exposition this year will demonstrate anew its usefulness in acquainting all who attend with the resources with which the New England States abound. Will you please extend my hearty congratulations to all the Governors from the North Atlantic States and to all friends of New England who gather with you on that day. The Eastern States Exposition through may years has demonstrated its usefulness not only to the states which actively participate but to the country as a whole because it gives a practical exemplification of the resources which each state possesses. At this time when the problem of national defense has caused us to take a very careful account of stock the Exposition at Springfield can be of great helpfulness. Autographed Luncheon In Honor of Franklin Delano Roosevelt Democratic Nominee for President. Atlanta Biltmore Hotel Atlanta Georgia. Monday Oct. 24 1932
Atlanta: Atlanta Biltmore Hotel 1932. Broadside. Good. Broadside. Menu. Approx. 8" x 5". Sketched portrait of F.D.R. with list of foods served at the luncheon. Signed in pencil by Roosevelt next to his portrait and at the top of the menu. Some light foxing to the front. Brown toning stains on the blank verso menu was possibly removed from a scrapbook or some other like collection. Roosevelt stopped in Atlanta in October 24th to give a speech. An excerpt from speech found on the web site georgiainfo dot galileo dot usg dot edu follows: The great warmth of your welcome reinforces the obvious fact that so far as carrying on a campaign to get votes my visit to this state has not been necessary. However the purpose of coming down here is not to get votes. My visit to the south is to carry out the purposes of my trips to the west to the coast and indeed throughout the country which is not so much to be heard as to hear and not so much to talk to you as to let you talk to me. It was only natural that in coming to the south I should have as an additional objective a visit to Warm Springs where I have spent so many hours and where I have had the good fortune to make so many friendships that I shall always cherish through life. These dinners raised $315000.</p><p>In addition DNC treasurer William Forbes Morgan 1880-1937 convinced the President to sign 2500 sheets which were bound into <i>The Democratic Book 1936</i> and sent to Democratic donors of $250. Purchases brought in more than $400000 for the party.</p><p>The sales led to a minor scandal. The <i>New York Times</i> reported on July 26 1937 that hundreds of copies of <i>The Democratic Book 1936</i>had been sold to corporations and individuals for $250. Republican House leader Bertrand Hollis Snell 1870-1958 and Representative Robert Low Bacon 1884-1938 both of New York insisted that the Federal Corrupt Practices Act forbid corporations from making campaign contributions in federal elections. On June 7 Representative Snell held up a purported sales letter from the Democratic National Committee that read in part "The sale of the book enables us to legally accept corporation checks and this is the way all the companies who are assisting us are handling these expenditures." The Democratic-controlled House failed to act on Snell's proposed resolution and Snell asked Attorney General Homer S. Cummings to investigate. In December Cummings predictably determined that criminal prosecutions against the Democratic National Committee for selling souvenir convention books to corporations "would not be warranted."</p><p>This lavish report on the administration's activities in the past year includes essays by many department heads sketches of other party leaders histories of the Democratic Party Congress and the White House and biographies of Roosevelt and Vice President John Nance Garner 1868-1967. It also includes FDR's acceptance speech at the 1936 Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia the 1936 Democratic National Platform and the results of the election of 1936. Many American companies provided advertising as well.</p><p><b>Complete Transcript of Foreword by Franklin D. Roosevelt</b></p><p><i>Democracy is not a static thing. It is an everlasting march.
