‎THE PUBLIC MEN OF THE REVOLUTION: INCLUDING EVENTS FROM THE PEACE OF 1783 TO THE PEACE OF 1815. IN A SERIES OF LETTERS‎

‎Philadelphia: Carey and Hart 1847. First Edition. Hardcover. Some chipping to the head of the spine. Near Fine. Original blindstamped brown cloth. Illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of the author. First published in 1834 this is an enlarged edition with a biographical sketch of the author by his son. Howes S-1130; Sabin 93559: "An attack on Thomas Jefferson and a defense of the Federalist party." Franklin Delano Roosevelt's copy with his bold SIGNATURE "Franklin D. Roosevelt/Hyde Park" on the front endpaper along with the notation "Very fine copy." Roosevelt was sympathetic toward Jefferson identifying with him as a leader who brought the government back into the hands of the people and who fashioned a government that served the best interests of the people rather than the interests of the privileged. On the pastedown opposite Roosevelt's signature is a pencil inscription by the former owner A. Boyd Hamilton State Printer of Pennsylvania in the mid-nineteenth century dated 1887 presenting the book to his son. Hamilton's signature dated 1847 is also on the title page in ink. A fine example of a book from FDR's library with distinctly American content including much on George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. <br/><br/> Carey and Hart hardcover‎

‎[Roosevelt, Eleanor]; Armin L Robinson [Editor]; Thomas Mann; Rebecca West; Franz Werfel; John Erskine; Bruno Frank; Jules Romai‎

‎The Ten Commandments: Ten Short Novels of Hitler's War Against the Moral Code Eleanor Roosevelt's copy‎

‎New York: Simon and Schuster 1944. Limited Edition. Very Good. Limited edition. Eleanor Roosevelt's copy #6 of 150 copies signed by each of the ten authors on the limitation page tipped in at front: Thomas Mann Rebecca West Sigrid Undset Andre Maurois and six others. xiii 1 488 pp. Custom bound in chestnut polished calf stamped in gilt on spine boards and turn-ins; Roosevelt's name stamped on front board. Not signed or inscribed by her though. All edges gilt maroon morocco title label to spine printed endpapers maroon ribbon marker. Very Good with light rubbing to extremities and heavy chipping to title label; front joint starting at upper end. Light scattered stains to fly-leaves; contents overall clean binding firm. Buergin 568.<br /> <br /> <p>In the summer of 1942 the Austrian refugee and music publisher Armin L. Robinson invited ten prestigious writers to work on a new project: an anti-fascist propaganda film that would demonstrate that Nazi ideology violated each of the Ten Commandments. The deal with Metro-Goldwyn-Meyer fell through so Robinson decided to continue the project as a collection of ten novellas. Each writer took one amendment with Thomas Mann leading the charge:<br /> <br /> <p>1. Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thomas Mann.<br /> <br> 2. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image. Rebecca West.<br /> <br> 3. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain. Franz Werfel.<br /> <br> 4. Remember to keep the sabbath day to keep it holy. John Erskine.<br /> <br> 5. Honour thy father and thy mother. Bruno Frank.<br /> <br> 6. Thou shalt not kill. Jules Romains.<br /> <br> 7. Thou shalt not commit adultery. Andre Maurois.<br /> <br> 8. Thou shalt not steal. Sigrid Undset.<br /> <br> 9. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor. Hendrik Willem Van Loon.<br /> <br> 10. Thou shalt not covet. Louis Bromfeld.<br /> <br /> <p>The book was published in December 1943. Reviewers felt that the collection was uneven and overly long but still found much to praise particularly in Mann's contribution. They all felt the moral imperative of anti-Nazi writing: "Here the world's pen is raised against the sword of the super-race" wrote the New York Times. Four years into the war it had become clear that Hitler's conquest of Europe went well beyond territorial expansion and was an assault on civilization itself. <br /> <br /> <p>It is no surprise that Eleanor Roosevelt should own a copy of this limited edition the text of which is taken from the third trade printing. Apart from being married to Hitler's chief opponent Eleanor was an activist whose positive newspaper review of Mann's 1938 book The Coming Victory of Democracy had aided its success with the American public. The Roosevelts received Thomas Mann and his wife at the White House in 1941 and Mann who admired the President's values and speechmaking gave a speech on behalf of his reelection campaign in 1944. This copy of The Ten Commandments bound for the First Lady's personal library is a tribute to the shared principles of those towering figures. Simon and Schuster unknown‎

‎Traitors Three.‎

‎Rare original broadside printing of this anti-Franklin D. Roosevelt and anti-New Deal poem. Duodecimo original paper. In good condition with some toning. American statesman and political leader Franklin Delano Roosevelt served as the President of the United States from 1933 to 1945. A Democrat he won a record four presidential elections and dominated his party after 1932 as a central figure in world events during the mid-20th century leading the United States during a time of worldwide economic depression and war. While his New Deal programs had their proponents they were also largely criticized under claims of fascism conservatism and communism for increasing the power of the federal government and supplying aid disproportionately toward big businesses and farms leaving marginalized farm workers without opportunity. unknown‎

‎[SARA DELANO ROOSEVELT]; Basil Maine‎

‎THE PRESIDENT'S MOTHER'S COPY: Franklin Roosevelt His Life and Achievement‎

‎London: John Murray 1938. Sara Delano Roosevelt's copy of her son's biography with her initials "SDR" in pencil to the front free end paper from the collection of Frederick Baldwin Adams a relative of FDR and his mother. Sara Delano Roosevelt clearly read the book with close interest as indicated by the marginal pencil lines scattered throughout the text. As these annotations are fairly extensive albeit heavily concentrated in the latter two-thirds of the book which concentrate on F.D.R.'s political career 1910s-1930s it is difficult to identify Sara's precise points of interest although there is the odd occurrence. For example on p.96 a less-encountered double-line is pencilled next to a sentence regarding F.D.R.'s embarkation on a new destroyer the Dyer during the First World War on which occasion "since he was sailing under secret orders neither his wife nor his mother could see him off" – perhaps a difficult memory that stuck in Sara's mind. More broadly sections concerning family friends and commentary regarding F.D.R.'s political achievements appear to have elicited the most interest. A touching relic indicative of Sara's famous devotion and steadfast support for her son whom she lived to see elected three times as President of the United States. An account of the life and character of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt by family friend writer and music critic Basil Maine 1894-1972. The present copy comes from the Franklin Delano Roosevelt collection of Frederick Baldwin Adams Jr 1910-2001 the son of Ellen Walters Delano who was a first cousin to President Roosevelt. Adams became a passionate bibliophile who served as director of the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York City for two decades and compiled a significant personal collection relating to F.D.R. In 1969 he married his third wife who was a Swedish princess and with whom he shared the final years of his life in France. Adams' move to France explains the presence of his books in the United Kingdom. First edition. Publisher's original pink cloth with titles in gilt to the spine. Illustrated with nine black and white photographs. Panels of the original dustwrapper loosely laid in along with a newspaper obituary of Sir Sayaji Rao Indian ruler of Baroda who was a guest at the White House in 1934. A very good copy the binding square and firm with a little fading to the spine. The contents with toning to two text pages resulting from the insertion of the newspaper cutting are otherwise excellent throughout. ‎Ahora Periodico Illustrado [CHURCHILL, Winston] [ROOSEVELT, President Franklin D]. &#0;‎

‎Atlantic Charter Version grafica de la Historica Entrevista realizada entre el Presidente de Estados Unidos Mr Franklin D. Roosevelt y el Primer Ministro de Gran Bretana Mr Winston Churchill. Agosto de 1941. &#0;‎

‎<p>Buenos Aries Ahora Periodico Illustrado. 1941. Oblong. 210x278mm. 32 leaves with 31 black and white photographs pasted in. Each photograph has printed captions text in Spanish pasted onto the bottom edge. The first leaf has the title details printed on white paper pasted in. Each photograph has a glassine protective sheet. Contemporary string bound album covered in maroon cloth and stamped with the name of the owner "Mervyn F. Ryan" on the upper cover with "Ahora Periodico Illustrado" stamped at bottom right corner. Some slight rubbing to extremities and wear to corners but otherwise very good and in excellent condition internally with the photographs especially well preserved. This album or anything like seems to be unrecorded and we have found nothing similar in the auction records. This fascinating collection of is a rare photographic record of the signing of the Atlantic Charter by Roosevelt and Churchill. It was produced by the Argentinian illustrated periodical Ahora. This was a news magazine and these photographs are enlarged versions printed on good quality gloss photographic paper of the pictures used in a series of issues of the magazine between 22nd August and 5th September 1941. There is little staged about these images and they have the immediacy of a true journalistic record. Unsurprisingly Roosevelt and Churchill feature heavily – they were the two big beasts Churchill holding the line in Europe and Roosevelt playing a very delicate domestic game with American public opinion – but there is a strong sense of the broader picture with lots of other figures contributing to the bustle and urgency of a major diplomatic conference. The Atlantic Conference took place between 9th-12th August 1941 at the US Naval Base Argentia in Newfoundland and the declaration issued as a statement rather than as a written document was made on 14th August. Although it was in a sense merely one of a number of similar declarations and agreements made that year the Anglo-Soviet Agreement – Evelyn Waugh's "day of apocalypse for all the world" - had been signed the previous month the Atlantic Charter the name was coined by a British newspaper and it stuck had a greater immediate impact and has had a longer lasting effect. Arguably it led to Pearl Harbour the Japanese interpreting it as an act of aggression; its call for national self-determination set the ball of decolonization rolling; and it laid the foundations for NATO and the United Nations. A new world order was emerging. The recipient of this album given to him we assume by Ahora magazine was Mervyn Ryan an engineer who worked in railways in America Britain India and Argentina. He was in Argentina for most of his working life latterly advising the Argentine government on the management of the previously British-owned railways. With fingers in lots of pies and a prominent member of the British community in Buenos Aries the editors of Ahora no doubt thought that Ryan was the right audience for this specially produced record of a major political event.</p> [Buenos Aries] Ahora Periodico Illustrado. &#0; hardcover‎

‎The GROTONIAN Vol. 49 XLIX Bound volumes containing all issues for 1932-33 Academic year; includes The Grotonian Prize Day 1933‎

‎Groton MA: Groton School. 1933. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. 8vo; 275 36 ads pages; Contents clean and secure in original binding of three-quarter maroon leather over boards; endpapers toned. Editor in Chief - John deK. Alsop; literary editors -- Munro L. Lyeth and Owen Biddle; Cornelius V.S. Roosevelt was a business manager. This volume belonged to Kermit Roosevelt Jr. who made fourteen literary contributions to these issues of the publication. Other literary contributors include Benjamin Welles II Louis Auchincloss Francis Keppel Samuel Hinckley John M. Graham John deK. Alsop etc. Groton School is one of the most selective private college-preparatory boarding schools in the United States. Ranked as one of the top five boarding schools in the United States Groton is affiliated with the Episcopalian tradition. George Biddle a 1902 graduate wrote "Ninety-five percent of the boys came from what they considered the aristocracy of America. Their fathers belonged to the Somerset the Knickerbocker the Philadelphia or the Baltimore Clubs. Among them was a goodly slice of the wealth of the nation." There are many famous Groton alumni including President Franklin D. Roosevelt and 12 other Roosevelt family members Dean Acheson Joseph Wright Alsop V Louis Auchincloss Henry Francis du Pont W. Averell Harriman Cyrus Vance Jr. etc. From the collection of Kermit "Kim" Roosevelt Jr. 1916 - 2000 the grandson of President Theodore Roosevelt. He was a career intelligence officer who served in the Office of Strategic Services and operated throughout the Near and Middle East for the CIA in the 1950s and 1960s. In Egypt under Allen Dulles Kim Roosevelt supervised the CIA's operation to undermine the popular General Neguib and encourage the rise to power of Gamul Abdul Nasser. Even before his decisive victory Nasser was communicating through Roosevelt to make a settlement with Great Britain. These back-channel negotiations eventually produced the treaty signed in October 1954. Nasser ascended and for the next decade Egypt's relations with the West moved along a sometimes rocky road. By 1965 relations had significantly deteriorated and Nasser was quite worried the CIA was plotting to assassinate him. After the Odell-Amin case broke the CIA began to look for "more West friendly" Egyptian elements. Their attention landed on the Muslim Brotherhood which according to Talcott Seelye "We thought of Islam as a counterweight to communism. We saw it as a moderate force and a positive one." In fact the CIA was spending millions of dollars on anti-Nasser operations including an extensive propaganda campaign. Roosevelt was also the mastermind of the Central Intelligence Agency's Operation Ajax which orchestrated the coup against Iran's democratically-elected Mohammed Mossadegh administration and returned Mohammad Reza Pahlavi the Shah of Iran to Iran's Peacock Throne in August 1953 for the purpose of returning Western control of Middle Eastern oil supplies. .
