‎Life on the Russian Country Estate: A Social and Cultural History‎

‎New Haven Connecticut: Yale University Press 1995. Hardcover. VG/VG clean bright tight copy but for owner's signature/date on ffep. Dark green cloth copper lettering Yellow dust jacket with color illustration; xxii 361 pp.; 230 color and bw illustrations frontispiece. "From the reign of Peter the Great Russia's country estates were oases of barbarian splendor and personal freedom in a vast sparsely settled and authoritarian land. This lavishly illustrated book is the first in any language to explore fully the vanished world of the Russian country estate. Priscilla Roosevelt brings to life these magnificent aristocratic dwellings discussing their origins their design and decoration the social family and cultural life within their walls and their physical demise after the 1917 revolution. The Bolshevik revolution destroyed both the world of the estate and much of the evidence about it. To recreate this lost world Roosevelt has drawn on many sources - including the physical remains of once-grand manor houses many photographed for this book the invaluable diaries and memoirs that chronicle a way of life that was to perish and the Russian art and literature that estate life produced and in which it was portrayed. Juxtaposing images from art and from the novels of such literary giants as Turgenev and Tolstoy with the real milieu that inspired them the book is a beautiful and vivid portrait of Russian country life" -- abstract. ‎2 Typed Letters Signed "Theodore Roosevelt" to Rev. Philip S. Bird‎

‎Oyster Bay New York 1920. Old folds wrinkling to bottom edge but fine. A pair of letters from President Roosevelt's son Theodore "Ted" Roosevelt III 1887-1944 known as "Theodore Jr." Both are addressed to Rev. Philip S. Bird in Dobbs Ferry-on-Hudson New York. In the first he declines an invitation to speak as he's already engaged adding "the members of the family at this moment are so scattered that it will be possible for no one to be there. My brother Archie is in Oklahoma my brother Kermit and my mother in Brazil and my sister and her husband in South Carolina. The other members have not yet reached that stage in life where they can be counted on to make speeches at least of a coherent nature." In the second letter he declines to Rev. Bird to make a commitment to speak on some other date. unknown‎

‎Roosevelt, Nicholas‎

‎Account of Republican Convention 1912‎

‎Np: Privately printed Nd. Only Edition. Wraps. Very good. Quarto; pp; 53 pages printed on rectos only; original gray wrappers string tied with red ribbon. OCLC listing #43562426. OCLC locates just a single copy at the Massachusetts Historical Society Library. A "Typewritten account of the Republican National Convention in Chicago June 13-21 1912 by Nicholas Roosevelt cousin of Theodore Roosevelt. Nicholas describes traveling by train from New York to Chicago with Theodore Edith and Kermit Roosevelt and other members of the election party. During the convention Nicholas describes meeting with Chicago Tribune reporter John Callan Cal O'Lauglin working with his colleague Charles P. Curtis for the Roosevelt campaign and the Progressive Party the theft of delegates by Taft Republicans and votes for Elihu Root. Also includes details on speeches given at the convention and the response from delegates. The account was constructed from diary entries and letters N. Roosevelt wrote to family members during the convention" . Also accompanying this piece is a typed letter signed Tls by Nicholas Roosevelt to William Roscoe Thayer author of "Theodore Roosevelt An Intimate Biography". Roosevelt is verifying some times that Thayer has inquired about. It appears that he was at factual odds with O. K. Davis who was also a participant in the Chicago 1912 events and wrote "Released For Publication". Nicholas has verified that Davis has been incorrect "and your reputation for veracity is saved". A very lively read! A rare opportunity to own an incredibly scarce TR piece from the Bull Moose experience. Cousin Nicholas was close to TR all his young life. Privately printed paperback‎
