ROOSEVELT, Franklin D
On Our Way.
New York: The John Day Company 1934. Presented to a key player in the Roosevelt revolution First edition first printing presentation copy inscribed by the 32nd President on the front free endpaper to his secretary of commerce "For Daniel C. Roper - this record of our first year - with my affectionate regards Franklin D. Roosevelt April 28 1934". Roper was integral to the rollout of New Deal policies and was an important bridge between the business community and the reforming president. Roper 1867-1943 first had contact with Roosevelt while Roper was serving as Woodrow Wilson's postmaster general and commissioner of internal revenue. In the latter role he was instrumental in the introduction of prohibition. "Roper spent the next thirteen years in private life as president of the Marlin Rockwell Corporation. As a reward for swinging the support of McAdoo and other former Wilson Democrats to his camp Franklin D. Roosevelt invited Roper to be his secretary of commerce in 1933. Roper not only oversaw the numerous tasks of his department which included the gathering and compiling of business statistics but also instituted a Business Advisory Council to make recommendations to the president and to Congress. In addition to his duties at the Commerce Department he also served on the Council for National Defense the Federal Board of Vocational Education and the National Emergency Council. His integrity and administrative abilities were widely respected despite being overshadowed by some of the more dynamic men of the Roosevelt administration" ANB. Roper was known as a conservative and as secretary of commerce retained the confidence of the business community. In this he was an important asset to Roosevelt as the New Deal and more liberal cabinet members came under fire from business groups - one obituary noted "he was the New Deal's ambassador of good will to American business; and if a soft answer could turn away wrath Daniel C. Roper was always equal to the occasion" The Atlanta Journal 16 April 1943. Roper retired as secretary of commerce in 1938 but was called back by Roosevelt to serve as ambassador to Canada in 1939 before finally ending his public career. In On Our Way Roosevelt analyses the state of the nation and outlines and defends his New Deal program. On page x "private party" is corrected to "private property" as per the erratum slip. The top edge is gilt - every other copy we have seen was red which is called for by Halter. Possibly the gilt-edged copies were produced for Roosevelt to present. Octavo. Original blue cloth spine lettered in gilt top edge gilt. With dust jacket possibly supplied. Pencil notations presumably of the recipient in margins. Cloth lightly soiled and rubbed; unclipped jacket with minor rubbing: a very good copy in very good jacket. Halter T-585. hardcover

ROOSEVELT, Franklin D
On Our Way.
New York: The John Day Company 1934. A Christmas gift to a favourite among his White House staff First edition presentation copy inscribed by the 32nd President on the front free endpaper "For Jules A. Rodier Merry Christmas from Franklin D. Roosevelt 1934". In On Our Way Roosevelt analyses the state of the nation and outlines and defends his New Deal program. Rodier 1871-1963 worked as a communications officer in the White House from 1900 to 1949. In her memoir of working for Roosevelt Lillian Rogers Parks wrote "The White House pet among the men was a stately old white-haired gentleman Jules Rodier who had come to work in the attic telegraph office of the White House in 1900. In 1941 when Jules was 70 years old Franklin Roosevelt very fond of the old gentleman who still handled secret messages sent and received by the President told him his job was secure - and that he was giving him a 'lifetime extension'. Jules the oldest living White House employee continued coming to the White House until he died at age ninety-one in 1963. He hadn't continued working all that time but he never missed returning every year for the annual White House Christmas party where he was the star of the show. He decided he'd had enough work in 1949 and voluntarily resigned. As he told me 'I don't want to be like Franklin Roosevelt and die young'. At the time he said it he was seventy-eight" Parks pp. 44-5. Octavo. Original blue cloth spine lettered in gilt top edge red. Two errata corrected by hand. Spine lightly sunned. A near-fine copy. ROOSEVELT, Franklin D (Mark Freeman GILLETTE; Guy M GILLETTE)
Original Drawing possibly of Pearl Harbor by Roosevelt in Scrapbook Kept by Iowa Senator's Son

Washington DC: No Publisher 1944. Large folio scrapbook; 22 1/2 X 14 1/2 inches; Leather covered heavy boards; Heavy paper leaves held by brackets; 100 folio pages containing notes clippings show programs cards notes and other ephemera glued or taped on leaves; almost all items are meticulously notated with dates and other commentary. Scrapbook of Mark Freeman Gillette 1929-2013 son of Senator Guy M. Gillette D-Iowa who served in the U.S. Congress 1932-1936 and in the U.S. Senate 1936-1944 and 1949-1955 for a combined 18 years. His son Mark F. Gillette keeper of the scrapbook and his mother accompanied the Senator to Washington D.C. residing there for much of Mark's childhood. The scrapbook is compiled by the young Gillette and spans the years when his father served as Senator from Iowa. The front flyleaf of this large folio scrapbook is festooned with scribbled writings and "dedications" by the teenage Gillette 1944 and conveys a hopeful and patriotic outlook. The second page contains a memorial dedication to President Franklin D. Roosevelt written by the sixteen-year-old Mark Gillette on the day of FDR's death. Under the memorial is written: "Events in this Book take place between January 20 1937 and Dec. 14 1949." It is unclear if these notes were added after the contents had been compiled or if the scrapbook was assembled in the later years. A number of pages throughout this large folio have ripped from the weight of the items taped on both sides of the scrapbook pages but the items themselves are almost all intact. Although a Democrat Senator Gillette was often at odd with the policies of FDR; regardless of this young Gillette held FDR in high regard. He states that he never met FDR personally but prizes a particular memento from a visit to the oval office when he was about 11 years old which he describes in detail in his notation next to a hand-drawn diagram leaf 19 which Gillette claims to have pocketed from the desk of the President during a visit to the White House. In his notation Mark Gillette clearly states that he was not given the piece of paper but that he took it from the President's desk because he wished to have the drawing made by FDR the drawing is undated – but Gillette states that it was drawn in 1941 prior to the United States entering World War Two; Gillette himself speculates that it could be a drawing of Pearl Harbor. The sketch bares some resemblance to Ford Island and the ovals may represent ships in Battleship Row. The 'X's' possibly indicating ships that were attacked. This is a speculation on our part. Other notable items contained in the scrapbook include: playbills from the original productions of CAROUSEL 1945 and OKLAHOMA 1946 as well as many other playbills from original productions of notable Broadway shows of the 1940s; matchbook covers; soap wrappers; college sports memorabilia; campaign materials; ration stamps; high school memorabilia; color postcards from 1940's; letters on Senate stationary; Western Union telegrams congratulating the Senator on his return to Senate in 1948; and twelve 12 8x10 black and white photos taken during the Senator's final Senate campaign which include pictures of the senator's son and wife.
No Publisher hardcover

Octavo original cloth gilt titles to the spine and front panel frontispiece portrait of Roosevelt with tissue guard present illustrated with photographs. Van Dyke" Wegner 234. Charles Scribner’s Sons hardcover
