‎Roosevelt, Theodore‎

‎Oliver Cromwell.‎

‎New York: Charles Scribner's Sons 1904. Early edition of Theodore Roosevelt's biography of Oliver Cromwell. Octavo original publisher's cloth with gilt titles to the spine and front panel inlay vignette stamped in gilt to the front panel top edge gilt tissue-guarded frontispiece with black and white illustrations throughout. Boldly signed and dated by the author as president on the front free endpaper "Theodore Roosevelt March 1st 1905." In very good condition with a note below of when Roosevelt signed the book. Theodore Roosevelt was an American statesman author explorer soldier naturalist and reformer who served as the 26th President of the United States from 1901 to 1909. As a leader of the Republican Party during this time he became a driving force for the Progressive Era in the United States in the early 20th century. Oliver Cromwell 1599–1658 remains one of the most contested figures in British history remembered both as a revolutionary statesman and as a divisive autocrat. Rising from relative obscurity as a country gentleman Cromwell became a skilled military commander during the English Civil Wars leading the New Model Army to decisive victories against royalist forces. Following the execution of Charles I in 1649 he played a central role in the establishment of the English Republic and in 1653 assumed power as Lord Protector. While his rule introduced experiments in republican government and expanded England’s influence abroad it also relied on authoritarian measures including strict censorship and the suppression of dissent in Ireland and Scotland. Cromwell’s legacy has therefore been shaped by tension between his role as a defender of parliamentary principles and his reputation as a regicidal dictator making him a figure continually reinterpreted according to shifting political and historical contexts. Blue buckram with beveled edges stamped in gilt on cover and spine. Spine sunned with some light edge wear. Top edge gilt. No dust jacket as issued. First edition limited presentation issue with beveled edges one of only 35 copies inscribed by Roosevelt on first free endpaper with additional emendation by him. 8vo. A magnificent example of this especially scarce Roosevelt title - one of just 35 presentation copies specially bound with beveled edges - here warmly inscribed by Roosevelt on the first free endpaper to his old friend and White House colleague Marvin McIntyre: "For Good old Mac - / alias Col. Marvin H. McIntyre with my affectionate regards in memory of a grand year together / Franklin D. Roosevelt / April 28th 1934."<br /> <br /> The "grand year" Roosevelt refers to is of course the first full year of his administration which began on March 4 1933. Roosevelt's boldest and most crucial efforts to stabilize the American economy in the wake of the unprecedented stock market crash all took place during that first year - really the first 100 days - and there is no doubt that McIntyre Roosevelt's friend of nearly 20 years and his gatekeeper of appointments in the White House was highly influential in that process among them the iconic acronyms associated with the New Deal such as the CCC the FDIC the TVA and the NRA National Recovery Act.<br /> <br /> This book was notorious for several typos and minor factual errors which Roosevelt himself caught soon after the first printing. He was known to have hand-corrected a few of these errors in copies of the book that he signed and one of these autograph emendations is present in this volume the printed word "party" is hand-corrected to "property" on p. x to read instead as "private property".<br /> <br /> Regarding the above Halter T585 states the following: "FDR and his publishers had intended to issue a limited first edition of 35 copies printed from the same type as the first trade edition but because the errors could hardly be corrected in a limited edition by means of cancel leaves and erratum slips publication was delayed until after the trade edition was released. In the end nevertheless the limited edition made its belated appearance with a cancel leaf at pp. 15-16 and the other two errors uncorrected!"<br /> <br /> This copy indeed contains the cancel leaf in addition to FDR's holographic notation. A particularly excellent copy of one of the rarest and most important Roosevelt books which compares favorably with the few others we've encountered. Halter T585. ‎ROOSEVELT, Franklin D‎

‎On Our Way.‎

‎New York: The John Day Company 1934. Presented to a key player in the Roosevelt revolution First edition first printing presentation copy inscribed by the 32nd President on the front free endpaper to his secretary of commerce "For Daniel C. Roper - this record of our first year - with my affectionate regards Franklin D. Roosevelt April 28 1934". Roper was integral to the rollout of New Deal policies and was an important bridge between the business community and the reforming president. Roper 1867-1943 first had contact with Roosevelt while Roper was serving as Woodrow Wilson's postmaster general and commissioner of internal revenue. In the latter role he was instrumental in the introduction of prohibition. "Roper spent the next thirteen years in private life as president of the Marlin Rockwell Corporation. As a reward for swinging the support of McAdoo and other former Wilson Democrats to his camp Franklin D. Roosevelt invited Roper to be his secretary of commerce in 1933. Roper not only oversaw the numerous tasks of his department which included the gathering and compiling of business statistics but also instituted a Business Advisory Council to make recommendations to the president and to Congress. In addition to his duties at the Commerce Department he also served on the Council for National Defense the Federal Board of Vocational Education and the National Emergency Council. His integrity and administrative abilities were widely respected despite being overshadowed by some of the more dynamic men of the Roosevelt administration" ANB. Roper was known as a conservative and as secretary of commerce retained the confidence of the business community. In this he was an important asset to Roosevelt as the New Deal and more liberal cabinet members came under fire from business groups - one obituary noted "he was the New Deal's ambassador of good will to American business; and if a soft answer could turn away wrath Daniel C. Roper was always equal to the occasion" The Atlanta Journal 16 April 1943. Roper retired as secretary of commerce in 1938 but was called back by Roosevelt to serve as ambassador to Canada in 1939 before finally ending his public career. In On Our Way Roosevelt analyses the state of the nation and outlines and defends his New Deal program. On page x "private party" is corrected to "private property" as per the erratum slip. The top edge is gilt - every other copy we have seen was red which is called for by Halter. Possibly the gilt-edged copies were produced for Roosevelt to present. Octavo. Original blue cloth spine lettered in gilt top edge gilt. With dust jacket possibly supplied. Pencil notations presumably of the recipient in margins. Cloth lightly soiled and rubbed; unclipped jacket with minor rubbing: a very good copy in very good jacket. Halter T-585. hardcover‎

‎On Our Way.‎

‎New York: The John Day Company 1934. A Christmas gift to a favourite among his White House staff First edition presentation copy inscribed by the 32nd President on the front free endpaper "For Jules A. Rodier Merry Christmas from Franklin D. Roosevelt 1934". In On Our Way Roosevelt analyses the state of the nation and outlines and defends his New Deal program. Rodier 1871-1963 worked as a communications officer in the White House from 1900 to 1949. In her memoir of working for Roosevelt Lillian Rogers Parks wrote "The White House pet among the men was a stately old white-haired gentleman Jules Rodier who had come to work in the attic telegraph office of the White House in 1900. In 1941 when Jules was 70 years old Franklin Roosevelt very fond of the old gentleman who still handled secret messages sent and received by the President told him his job was secure - and that he was giving him a 'lifetime extension'. Jules the oldest living White House employee continued coming to the White House until he died at age ninety-one in 1963. He hadn't continued working all that time but he never missed returning every year for the annual White House Christmas party where he was the star of the show. He decided he'd had enough work in 1949 and voluntarily resigned. As he told me 'I don't want to be like Franklin Roosevelt and die young'. At the time he said it he was seventy-eight" Parks pp. 44-5. Octavo. Original blue cloth spine lettered in gilt top edge red. Two errata corrected by hand. Spine lightly sunned. A near-fine copy.
