This Roosevelt archive constitutes three moments in time for the Roosevelt family during the height of their importance in the US political and social landscape centred around First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. First we have a private glimpse at Eleanor’s parents. An oval portrait of Elliot Roosevelt 1860-1894 Eleanor’s father was taken in Abingdon VA. Likely this photo was taken in the last year of his life as he had moved to Abingdon after the death of his wife and son. A smaller portrait suffering crinkling depicts Anna Hall Roosevelt 1863-1892 Eleanor’s mother. According to her family Eleanor kept these photographs of her parents in her bedroom. Next we have the documentation of Eleanor’s absence as Sara Delano Roosevelt her soon-to-be-mother-in-law takes Franklin around the Caribbean in 1903 or 1904 “when she was trying to lure him away from Eleanor †as notable Roosevelt-documentarian Pare Lorentz put it in his letter to Hyde Park regarding these same photos. Pare’s letter regarding these photos dated February 22 1949 is now housed in the FDR Presidential Library and Museum. We’re looking at a set of 75 black and white square and panorama photos depicting a tour of locations identified in Saint Augustine Miami Havana Cuba Willemstad Curaçao Spanishtown Jamaica Nassau Bahamas and possibly showing construction of the Panama Canal. The letters between Pare and Hyde Park catalogue some of these same photos that were reproduced for the Library including “bathing suit group on beach †“pix sic of natives of scenery and one possible shot of FDR back †“outdoor eating shot - looks like SDR †“numerous naval vessels †“wonderful bathing suit pic but no indication of any Roosevelt in it - period piece †and “1 pix sic of SDR on hotel porch.†The two letters dated 2/22/1949 and 11/17/1949 to and from Pare Lorentz and Hyde Park that are currently housed in the FDR Library and Museum are followed up within this archive by a correspondence from the Pare Lorentz office signed by Jacqueline Bernard noting the receipt from Elliot Roosevelt son of FDR and Eleanor of 27 or 30 loose pictures and four albums for reproduction by the Roosevelt Library on December 13th 1949. Thanks to architectural clues we know largely where these photos were taken. As Pare notes these pictures are unlabelled making them rife with opportunity to discover new details about who was on this Caribbean trip and to piece together the journey that FDR and his mother made before his marriage to Eleanor and the reconciliation between mother- and daughter-in-law.The final moment we have within this archive is an intimate glimpse of Eleanor in the 1950s. It is nearly 10 years after her husband’s death and we see Eleanor out west with a mid-1950s date suggested by the Kodak stereoscope film type. These photos may have been taken during her Autumn trip in 1954 to Montana Idaho and Wyoming which she writes about in her news column My Day. These photos both significant as they are and significant to future understanding of the Roosevelt’s lives comes through the legacy of Eleanor and FDR’s third child Elliot and was deaccessioned through his heirs. Though some of them were reproduced for the FDR Presidential Library they remain unpublished. unknown‎

Single sheet of stationery measuring 6 by 7 inches; pp. 2. $2600.Original autograph letter written entirely in Eleanor RooseveltÂ’s hand and sent from Moscow in 1958 to her close friend university professor and womenÂ’s activist Esther Lape thanking Lape for sending “the Nehru letter” referencing her warm memories of LapeÂ’s late partner Elizabeth Read sharing RooseveltÂ’s post-Moscow travel plans and initialed in closing by Eleanor Roosevelt.This most desirable letter was written during the second of Eleanor RooseveltÂ’s two trips to Russia—in the fall of 1958 as evident from RooseveltÂ’s reference to how “mail has improved this year as everything else has.” Dated “Moscow Sept. 18th” and written on Eleanor RooseveltÂ’s personal letterhead the letter reads in full: “Dearest Esther It is so cold I am wrapped in everything I own but I want to write a line of thanks for the Nehru letter very thought provoking & ideas of all kinds are seething through my head for the four columns IÂ’ll write on getting home. I loved PeggyÂ’s letter & Elizabeth must have helped so many of us to honesty & maturity. What a wonderful person she was. I never find her long out of my thoughts. I think the mail has improved this year as everything else has in the material line since last year. your letter of the 11th came this morning. we are seeing what we want & are so nearly through that we plan to leave the 26th by jet in the a.m. & be in Paris about 11 a.m. & take four days before going home. I am glad as Edna & David will enjoy it & so will I. My dear love to you E.R.” This letter was written to Esther Lape one of Eleanor RooseveltÂ’s closest friends. Lape was an English professor at Barnard Swarthmore and the University of Arizona. She also distinguished herself through her participation in the WomenÂ’s Trade Union League and as one of the founders of the League of Women Voters. Additionally Lape was the life partner of Elizabeth Read Eleanor RooseveltÂ’s personal attorney and financial advisor. It was that association that brought Lape to the attention of Eleanor Roosevelt and resulted in their friendship. As early as 1920 the three women already had a close professional association working together on matters pertaining to the League of Women Voters. In 1921 they began meeting as friends collaborating on the New Women movement. In 1923 Lape and Roosevelt worked alone for the first time holding a competition for the Bok Peace Prize. When the Senate launched an investigation into whether the Bok Prize was a tool of “foreign governments or foreign institutions” Lape identified Roosevelt as one of the most influential members of the selection committee for the prize. The hearing were suspended with WilsonÂ’s death and never revived. Throughout the 1930s Lape and Roosevelt worked together on issues such as healthcare and United States recognition of the Soviet Union. With the war their interests diverged somewhat but their friendship remained as strong as ever. Lape and her partner Read owned a building in Greenwich Village and Roosevelt desperate for an escape from the pressures of life as first lady rented an apartment there. Lape and ReadÂ’s country home in Connecticut provided similar refuge. When Read died in 1943 Lape and Roosevelt grew even closer holding up the memory of a beloved partner and friend. Upon RooseveltÂ’s death Lape fought to get a posthumous Nobel Peace Prize for Roosevelt but failed in that endeavor.A fine autograph initialed letter with an outstanding association. unknown‎
