ROOSEVELT THEODORE
Autograph Letter Signed ALS
White Nile Sudan: np 1910. First edition. nb. Very Good. RARE AUTOGRAPH LETTER WRITTEN BY ROOSEVELT FROM THE WHITE NILE SUDAN WHILE ON HIS AFRICAN SAFARI. "When Theodore Roosevelt retired from the presidency in 1909 he was only 50 years old. The youngest former president in American history he was looking for adventure and for a project that would take him away from Washington D.C. and politics. A naturalist at heart he turned not surprisingly to his boyhood fascination for natural history. Three weeks after the inauguration of his successor William Howard Taft Roosevelt set out for British East Africa to hunt big game. The expedition traveled throughout what is today southern and western Kenya the Congo Uganda and southern Sudan by train horse camel and a steamboat on the Nile-stopping for weeks at each destination to collect specimens. They hunted elephants on the slopes of Mount Kenya and rare white rhinoceros in the Lado region of British Uganda. In late February 1910 they hunted eland a species of antelope in the Belgian Congo. They ended the expedition in Khartoum Sudan on March 14 1910" Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. Roosevelt's African safari elevated him to a near-mythic status in the United States cementing his reputation as a courageous adventurer. This letter - a rare survival written and sent by Roosevelt while on his safari - reads in full: The White Nile March 4th 1910 Dear Mr. Eaton Your book has just come and I anticipate reading it; I'll at once turn to the fight. I am much pleased that you should have found my "Naval War of 1812" interesting. I began it when I was a senior at Harvard. You are quite right - Mahan is the naval Gibbon. Sincerely yours Theodore Roosevelt With original envelope addressed to Eaton in Roosevelt's hand with canceled stamps from the Sudan with Khartoum postmark. The recipient Paul W. Eaton was an author and journalist. The book Roosevelt refers to is almost certainly Eaton's 1909 novel The Treasure a fictional account of the War of 1812. It obviously would appeal to Roosevelt since as he mentions his own first book - begun while he was still at Harvard - is a history and analysis for the naval battles and technology of the War of 1812. The "Mahan" Roosevelt refers to is Alfred Thayer Mahan who gained worldwide fame as the author of The Influence of Sea Power Upon History 1660-1783 1890 and The Influence of Sea Power Upon the French Revolution and Empire 1793-1812 1892. The White Nile Sudan March 4 1910. One sheet 6 7/8 x 10 3/4 inches folded in half and written on two sides quarter-sheets in pencil. Signed in full by Roosevelt. With original envelope. Usual folds otherwise fine condition. Letters by Roosevelt sent from Africa are rare. np unknown

Roosevelt Theodore
Autograph Letter Signed "Theodore Roosevelt" to Harriet Douglas Robinson "Dear Missy" congratulating her on her engagement to Henry Bazeley Wolryche-Whitmore
New York 1881. 4 pp. pen and ink on bifolium with original envelope addressed in Roosevelt's hand stamp torn off with some loss Basel and New York franking stamps. 8 x 5 inches. Creased from prior folding. 4 pp. pen and ink on bifolium with original envelope addressed in Roosevelt's hand stamp torn off with some loss Basel and New York franking stamps. 8 x 5 inches. An early letter from the 22-year-old Theodore Roosevelt to his friend Harriet Douglas Robinson congratulating her on her engagement to the Englishman Henry Bazeley Wolryche-Whitmore. Robinson was the granddaughter of Betsy Mary Douglas and James Monroe nephew of the President of the same name. Her mother Fanny Monroe married Douglas Robinson a distant cousin. Harriet's brother Douglas Robinson married Roosevelt's sister Corinne in 1882. The letter reads in part: "I must confess that I was perfectly dumbfounded - though intensely delighted - at the news. Of course I could see that he was very much in love and I rather thought it would be an engagement some time . I am too glad that we had all of us already grown to like him so much: I don't think we could have trusted our Missy in a total stranger's hands . whenever we go to England you will be I am afraid bored by our presence; and whenever you come over the Atlantic it will not only be to see Mr. & Mrs. Robinson Jr but Mr. & Mrs. Roosevelt Jr ." A rare early letter predating Roosevelt's election to the New York State Assembly in November 1881. ABPC records only two letters sold at auction dated earlier than the present letter. unknown

ROOSEVELT Eleanor
Autograph letter initialed
1952. ROOSEVELT Eleanor. Autograph letter initialed. Moscow September 18 1958. Single sheet of stationery measuring 6 by 7 inches; pp. 2. $2600.Original autograph letter written entirely in Eleanor Roosevelts hand and sent from Moscow in 1958 to her close friend university professor and womens activist Esther Lape thanking Lape for sending the Nehru letter referencing her warm memories of Lapes late partner Elizabeth Read sharing Roosevelts post-Moscow travel plans and initialed in closing by Eleanor Roosevelt. This most desirable letter was written during the second of Eleanor Roosevelts two trips to Russiain the fall of 1958 as evident from Roosevelts reference to how mail has improved this year as everything else has. Dated Moscow Sept. 18th and written on Eleanor Roosevelts personal letterhead the letter reads in full: Dearest Esther It is so cold I am wrapped in everything I own but I want to write a line of thanks for the Nehru letter very thought provoking & ideas of all kinds are seething through my head for the four columns Ill write on getting home. I loved Peggys letter & Elizabeth must have helped so many of us to honesty & maturity. What a wonderful person she was. I never find her long out of my thoughts. I think the mail has improved this year as everything else has in the material line since last year. your letter of the 11th came this morning. we are seeing what we want & are so nearly through that we plan to leave the 26th by jet in the a.m. & be in Paris about 11 a.m. & take four days before going home. I am glad as Edna & David will enjoy it & so will I. My dear love to you E.R. This letter was written to Esther Lape one of Eleanor Roosevelts closest friends. Lape was an English professor at Barnard Swarthmore and the University of Arizona. She also distinguished herself through her participation in the Womens Trade Union League and as one of the founders of the League of Women Voters. Additionally Lape was the life partner of Elizabeth Read Eleanor Roosevelts personal attorney and financial advisor. It was that association that brought Lape to the attention of Eleanor Roosevelt and resulted in their friendship. As early as 1920 the three women already had a close professional association working together on matters pertaining to the League of Women Voters. In 1921 they began meeting as friends collaborating on the New Women movement. In 1923 Lape and Roosevelt worked alone for the first time holding a competition for the Bok Peace Prize. When the Senate launched an investigation into whether the Bok Prize was a tool of foreign governments or foreign institutions Lape identified Roosevelt as one of the most influential members of the selection committee for the prize. The hearing were suspended with Wilsons death and never revived. Throughout the 1930s Lape and Roosevelt worked together on issues such as healthcare and United States recognition of the Soviet Union. With the war their interests diverged somewhat but their friendship remained as strong as ever. Lape and her partner Read owned a building in Greenwich Village and Roosevelt desperate for an escape from the pressures of life as first lady rented an apartment there. Lape and Reads country home in Connecticut provided similar refuge. When Read died in 1943 Lape and Roosevelt grew even closer holding up the memory of a beloved partner and friend. Upon Roosevelts death Lape fought to get a posthumous Nobel Peace Prize for Roosevelt but failed in that endeavor.A fine autograph initialed letter with an outstanding association. unknown

ROOSEVELT Eleanor
AUTOGRAPH LIMERICK SIGNED
7 August 1930. Fine. A four-line poem a limerick completely in Eleanor Roosevelt's hand on 6" x 3-1/2" Executive Mansion stationery dated and SIGNED by her. Apparently given to an employee. "There was a young fellow called Joe/Who thought he was coming too slow/But he made up his mind to be the whole show/And now there's a corporal named Joe--." Mrs. Roosevelt's understanding and feel for politics was greater than that for poetry. A rare form of the First Lady's autograph. We are aware of only one other example of a poem in her hand which sold for $1000 plus premium at auction nearly 25 years ago. We sold this piece 16 years ago and offer it now at the same price we sold it for then.

unknown

Roosevelt Edith Kermit
Autographed Letter Signed
New York. Very good. This letter was written from the Roosevelt Hospital in New York City. It is written on Roosevelt Hospital stationery with the heading of the Superintendent Chas. D. Grimshaw. It is simply dated "Tuesday P.M." It is written to Mr. Albert Shaw who was editor of the Review of Reviews and the author of the "Cartoon History of Theodore Roosevelt 1910 and a long time friend. When Theodore Roosevelt was hospitalized in February and later in November 1918 Edith was provided an adjoining room so that she could be with and attentive to her husband. We believe this letter is from one of those two stays. She is thanking Shaw for sending some unnamed "delightful" books. "I can scarcely say until later which half of the family will enjoy them most!" She concludes "All goes well tho I suppose we are here for some time longer". TR would not return to Sagamore Hill until Christmas day 1918 He would die on January 6 1919. The letter is signed "E.K.R." Just as TR is collected in manuscript form in his various offices Police Commissioner Assemblyman President etc. there is a special character to a letter written by Mrs. Roosevelt from this location. unknown

Harper relates that TR will not give his permission for an unnamed project that the Patent Office says needs TR's release. One can only speculate on what this person had dreamt up that no doubt used the former President's name or effigy. Still it is signed by Harper TR's British born secretary that served him from approx. 1910 through 1914. unknown

Roosevelt Theodore
Average Americans
New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons 1919. First Edition. Khaki cloth with brown lettering. Very good. Frontispiece of a smiling WW I doughboy. 8vo 5.62" x 8.12" pp. iv xxi 2 1-252 with 6 pages of Putnam book advertisements includes 10 Illustrations. Owners name and address on front paste down and verso of frontispiece "William C. Bidlack Jr. 1918" bookseller notation in pencil on FFE. A read copy with loose but not separating binding some aging on pages close to the inner bindingscuffs on corners and spine. A young Theodore Jr. who served with the First AEF during the "War to End All Wars" recounts his family in the early chapters and then goes on to give a verbal spanking to the politicians who sent courageous American young men to war unprepared fully for the battles on foreign soil. "It is all very well for someone comfortably ensconced in his swivel chair in Washington to issue the statement that he glories in the fact that we went into this war unprepared. It may be glorious for him but it is not glorious for those who fight the war for those who pay the price. The clap-trap statesmen of this type should be forced to go themselves or at least have their sons as guarantee of their good faith join the fighting forces. Needless to say none of them did." p 31.
