Eleanor Roosevelt Helps a Young Woman Continue her Education
Eleanor Roosevelt. First Lady. In this letter from the Great Depression Eleanor promises to connect a young woman whos education was interrupted by the Great Depression with a friend who "who would be willing to help you finish your education". Typed letter signed "Eleanor Roosevelt" . December 29th 1932. New York New York. 2 pages.

While many wives of politicians were relegated to professional hostesses Eleanor used her platform to advocate for the America people. The Great Depression was only three years along when Eleanor responded to this letter: "My dear Miss Kelly" she begins "I am sorry to hear of the struggle you and your mother have had and think your mother has been splendid to be able to accomplish as much as she did. I regret that I can not personally help you but the demands on me are so great that I cannot meet them personally." Eleanor was indeed working very hard. You can feel the haste in which she responds with the double 'personally' in this sentence perhaps a subconscious reference to the great personal responsibility that Eleanor took up as a public figure. Eleanor promises to pass on the letter "to a friend of mine in Connecticut" who will be able to help the young woman. "Very sincerely yours" she concludes before signing in her hand "Eleanor Roosevelt." Swayed by communications like these Eleanor worked tirelessly from her earliest days in the White House to improve conditions for women and children particularly those from the country's large migrant labor population. In very good condition. A moving letter demonstrating Eleanor's commitment to public welfare. unknown books
