This small archive of early photographs opens with a photo of three of the Rough Riders who had served with President Roosevelt during the Spanish-American War were part of the welcoming parade for Roosevelt in May 1903 when he delivered a speech declaring that “no citizen is above the law†and accepted a golden horseshoe with a figure “5†presented by the African-American citizens of Spokane. The photo was taken by Charles Libby 1879-1966 noted Spokane WA photographer. This is followed by images of Thomas Rowe with steam traction engine and wagon tanker in wheat field with workers and engineers standing next to the engine; another with a group of farm workers and engineers posing beside traction engine and thresher behind split rail fence and finally a third with Rowe posing beside his Port Huron Steam Traction Engine and Port Huron thresher in front of large stone building. Next series of images includes striking photo of men operating a steam-powered sawmill operating on wooden rails in the act of slicing large log; Clark & James Kimball’s wagon for hauling logs with tall firs in the background; sawmill located at Edgecomb Snohomish Co. WA in the early 20th century as well as dated photo noting Thomas Rowe’s sawmill operating on the farm of August Carl Dec. 19 1905 with stacks of lumber surrounding the sawmill horse team in harness and portable steam engine in operating to the left of the image. Two of the subsequent images show the interior of the general store and butcher shop where Oliver Rowe worked following World War I as butcher showing product displays Coca-Cola bottle display pressed tin ceilings and more. One of the remaining mounted photos portrays Rowe’s Spokane High School football team in the mid-1930s but is undated only indicating Spokane WA in manuscript in upper left corner. The 95 snapshots encompass photos of 32 horse team pulling a thresher in Eastern Washington in 1930; family members friends some in Missouri many in World War II uniforms as well as one of the tombstone for Thomas W. Rowe and his wife Eva J. Rowe in Fellowship Cemetery Miller Missouri. Thomas Rowe 1865-1958 operated a large farm in Lawrence County Missouri owned several sawmills and lumber yards in Missouri Kansas Idaho and Washington as well as maintaining a business which leased out steam traction engines and threshers for harvests. Oliver Rowe 1892-1943 a nephew of Thomas worked initially as a butcher in Lewiston ID and later became meat inspector for the USDA in Spokane WA.
