‎Washington DC: United States Government Printing Office 1937. Limited Edition. Leather bound. Very good. Address of the President on the Occasion of His Visit to South America a signed limited edition. Quarto 5 17-23 3 32-33 79 blank. Black pebbled morocco raised bands on spine presidential seal in gilt over blue leather on front board. Inner durables with gilt decoration and silk paste down. Top edge gilt uncut edges. Limitation page states: "In commemoration of the visit of the President of the United States to the Pan American Peace Conference in South America November and December Nineteen Hundred and Thirty-six seventy-five copies of his address have been designed and printed by the United States Government Printing Office Washington District of Columbia April Nineteen Hundred and Thirty-seven." The copy for President Rafael Molina was delivered to him on October 22 1937 with a note confirming delivery to Secretary Cordell Hull.

President Rafael Trujillo was the dictator who ruled the Dominican Republic from 1930 - 1961. During his time as president he was responsible for thousands of political deaths and assassinations. It was later learned that that CIA played a part in the assassination of Trujillo in 1961. Provenance: Book was acquired from a "senior executive" at the USGPO by New York bookseller Warren Berry.

Records from the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library indicate that "In all seventy-five copies were printed fifty copies in full pigskin with double box type slipcase and twenty-five copies half bound with marbled sides and conventional single slip cases." The library documents also note that "names and titles of the dignitaries who are to receive the book also require careful research" indicating that mistakes were made and certain copies were held back. Multiple requests were made of Roosevelt to produce more copies but all complete copies were distributed. United States Government Printing Office unknown‎

‎Addresses of the President of the United States on the Occasion of His Visit to South America November & December 1936‎

‎Washington D.C.: United States Printing Office 1937. First edition one of 75 but probably one of only 7 in this binding. 97 3 pp. 1 vols. 4to. Bound in full light bown pigskin with metallic plaque of the Seal of the United States inset into the upper cover now with a fine patina pigskin doublures and silk endpapers. Fine. In quarter leather and marbled boards pull off slipcase. First edition one of 75 but probably one of only 7 in this binding. 97 3 pp. 1 vols. 4to. A sumptously produced White House Christmas book commemorating FDR's nearly month-long diplomatic mission to promote "hemispheric solidarity" with South America. The book was issued in an uncertain though undoubtedly strictly limited number with two issues--in full pigskin as seen here and half pigskin and marbled boards. The colophon calls for 75 copies with the more desirable full pigskin binding scheduled to run to 50 copies for distribution to South American dignitaries and the half-leather isssue of a planned 25 copies reserved for FDR's personal use and distribution at the holidays. Documents at the Library at Hyde Park suggest that the full edition of 75 copies was not achieved cf. Horowitz "Carmichael Collection" and that as few as seven were ever bound in full pigskin.
This copy one of the "foreign" issues was nonetheless INSCRIBED to FDR's Sectretary of the Treasury Henry Morgenthau on a specially printed leaf: "To the Honorable Henry Morgenthau Jr Secretary of the Treasury of the United States" printed and inscribed below in the President's hand "From his old friend/ Franklin D. ‎Affectionately F.D.R. A son's story of a lonely man‎

‎Inscribed on title page: For one of the finest people who tread this earth Hon. Thomas J. O'Brien M.C. from his appreciative friend James Roosevelt O'Brien was a Congressman from Illinois from 1933-1939 & 1943-1964.

Clean text. Price unclipped $5.75. Protected by Brodart dust jacket cover.

Beautiful green boards with gold print on backplate and metallic green insignia on front. Endpapers have wonderful pictures of Roosevelt Family. Book is in very good plus condition. The dust jacket is in good condition with some small folds and creases on top of front. Some chips along top of spine and shelf wear along bottom. Rear has some spotting on top half.

Beautiful book from the President's oldest son who was involved in many personal and professional scandals throughout his life. For example his second wife blackmailed him for his numerous affairs while his third wife stabbed him eight times with his own Marine combat knife. Many other scandals involving "Jimmy" occurred before his death in 1985.

From Politico.

More than President Roosevelt's oldest son and his physical support at public appearances Jimmy also served for a time as one of the president's closest advisers. Yet he could never shake the stigma of influence-peddling. In both his father's first and second terms he had to dodge rumors "of using political influence to make huge profits for his insurance agency." The secretary of the Treasury accused him of acting as bootlegging partner to Joseph Kennedy Sr.—and when Jimmy interceded on behalf of a tax-evading business associate even threatened to resign in protest. Toward the end of his tenure as his father's advisor Jimmy approached SEC Chairman William O. Douglas with a plan from the utility companies to rig financial regulations in return for kickbacks. Rather than endorsing the scheme Douglas brought word of it to the president along with his own letter of resignation—and was stunned when FDR wept with anger.

Nor did word of these scandals stay confined to the White House. In 1938 the Saturday Evening Post published "Jimmy's Got It" an exposé alleging that the president's son brought in as much as $2 million annually through his insurance business.

From Wikipedia.
James Roosevelt II December 23 1907 – August 13 1991 was an American businessman Marine activist and Democratic Party politician. The eldest son of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Eleanor Roosevelt he served as an official Secretary to the President for his father and was later elected to the United States House of Representatives representing California serving 5 terms from 1955 to 1965. He received the Navy Cross while serving as a Marine Corps officer during World War II.

He resigned from Congress in October 1965 10 months into his sixth term when President Lyndon B. Johnson appointed him a delegate to the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization UNESCO. Roosevelt resigned from UNESCO in December 1966 and retired to become an executive of the Investors Overseas Service IOS in Geneva Switzerland.2

Roosevelt joined the IOS despite the overseas firm's concurrent investigation by the SEC for numerous irregularities. In Geneva in May 1969 during the unraveling of IOS Roosevelt's third wife Irene Owens stabbed him "eight times" with his "own Marine combat knife" while he was preparing divorce proceedings. When fugitive financier Robert Vesco obtained control of IOS from Bernie Cornfeld and absconded with approximately $200 million Roosevelt initially stayed on under Vesco. Roosevelt later wrote that "As soon as I saw the situation for what it was in 1971 I resigned my position." However this episode resulted in federal charges being laid against Roosevelt and several others as well as a Swiss arrest warrant. The charges were later dropped and then he returned to California settling in Newport Beach. He became associated with the Nixon Administration in several capacities and remained friendly with Richard Nixon until his death.

Despite having been a liberal Democrat all of his life Roosevelt joined Democrats for Nixon and publicly supported President Nixon's 1972 re-election and also supported Ronald Reagan in 1980 and 1984.

In the 1980s a non-profit organization established by Roosevelt the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare and its associated political action committee were investigated by the House Ways and Means Committee for questionable money-raising practices and by the Post Office for mail fraud. By direct mail Roosevelt's group solicited contributions from elderly persons by claiming that Social Security and Medicare programs were in financial jeopardy. Roosevelt also urged contributors to order their Social Security statements of earnings from his group these are free from the government.

Harcourt, Brace & Company hardcover‎
