Roosevelt Eleanor
India And The Awakening East
London: Hutchinson. Very Good/Good. 1954. First UK Edition. Hard Cover. 8vo Dust jacket chipped to edges price clipped. Red cloth with black titling on spine. Neat small name on half title. 168 pages clean and tight. Of all the prominent Americans who have gone officially or unofficially on missions to the East Mrs Roosevelt is of course in a class by herself. In this book she reports on her journey and the peoples she met in precisely that shrewd honest and disarming manner which has made her the most admired and loved woman in world affairs. While Mrs Roosevelt gives due attention in this book to the thorny political problems of the Eastern peoples her primary purpose was to gain understanding of basic social economic and human issues : the status of women the revolution in agriculture the influence of religion the attitude of educated men and women toward the West the problems of birth control and raising health standards. And the book is crowded with anecdotes like her reception by the tribesmen of the Khyber Pass her visits to the humblest homes and stricken refugees as well as functions in the stately homes of great leaders and princes. .
