Roosevelt, Franklin D
Franklin D. Roosevelt Signed Commemorative WWI Lake Torpedo Boat Company Photographs.
Bridgeport CT: Lake Torpedo Boat Co c. May 20 1918. Rare vintage photographs of Franklin D. Roosevelt as Assistant Secretary of the U. S. Navy signed by him. Two gelatin silver photographs showing FDR on his May 20 1918 visit to Lake Torpedo Boat Company in Bridgeport Connecticut the first of Roosevelt seated next to various officials on the speaker's stand and the second of Roosevelt and the same group of men walking past a building on the plant site. Signed by him on the lower right of the mat of each photograph "Franklin D Roosevelt." Matted and framed with a manuscript caption "Lake Torpedo Boat Co Bridgeport Conn May 20 1918." On that date in Bridgeport Connecticut Roosevelt spent an incredibly busy day visiting no fewer than four munitions plants a naval base and the state armory. The submarine-manufacturing plant Lake Torpedo Boat Company was one of the first stops on Roosevelt's itinerary. While there Roosevelt gave an address from the company launching platform to about 1700 workers in which he spoke about the importance of building an American fleet of submarines that could seek out and destroy German U-boats. Roosevelt toured N-class and O-class submarines then under various stages of manufacture at the plant attended a flag-raising ceremony and greeted many employees and naval officers. Local newspapers enthusiastically reported about how two local teenagers 15-year-old electricians' assistants got to shake Roosevelt's hand during the visit. The same day of his tour of the Lake Torpedo Boat Company Roosevelt also inspected the nearby Remington Arms & Ammunition Company and the Black Rock Naval Reserve base all the while promoting wartime productivity and patriotism among workers. In near fine condition. Each piece measures 10.625 inches by 8.75 inches by 1 inch. American statesman and political leader Franklin Delano Roosevelt served as the President of the United States from 1933 to 1945. A Democrat he won a record four presidential elections and dominated his party after 1932 as a central figure in world events during the mid-20th century leading the United States during a time of worldwide economic depression and war. Having been left paralyzed from the waist down by polio in 1921 FDR's inability to walk was deliberately disguised by both his personal White House physician and the media in order to manufacture a facade of perfect health. In many cases the President's health translated to the appearance of the health of the nation. Lake Torpedo Boat Co unknown

Roosevelt, Eleanor
Franklin D. Roosevelt and Hyde Park; Personal Recollections of Eleanor Roosevelt
Washington DC: U. S. Government Printing Office Department of the Interior National Park Service 1969. Presumed First Edition First printing. Wraps. Good. 2 18 pages plus covers. Frontispiece. Footnotes. Illustrations. Illustrated front cover. Covers have some wear and soiling. This was issued while Stewart Udall was Secretary of the Interior 1961-1969 and bears the printing date of 1969 on page 18. This is a most interesting discussion of FDR's family connection to Hyde Park by Eleanor Roosevelt whose facsimile signature is on the title page. Anna Eleanor Roosevelt October 11 1884 - November 7 1962 was an American political figure diplomat and activist. She was the first lady of the United States from 1933 to 1945 during her husband Franklin D. Roosevelt's four terms as president making her the longest-serving first lady of the United States. Through her travels public engagement and advocacy she largely redefined the role of first lady. Roosevelt then served as a U.S. Delegate to the United Nations General Assembly from 1945 to 1952 and took a leading role in gaining international support for the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In 1948 she was given a standing ovation by the assembly upon their adoption of the declaration. President Harry S. Truman later called her the "First Lady of the World" in tribute to her human rights achievements. Roosevelt was one of the world's most widely admired and powerful women. In the White House she was a controversial first lady for her outspokenness particularly with respect to civil rights. She was the first presidential spouse to hold regular press conferences write a daily newspaper column write a magazine column host a weekly radio show and speak at a national party convention. The Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site preserves the Springwood estate in Hyde Park New York United States. Springwood was the birthplace lifelong home and burial place of the 32nd president of the United States Franklin D. Roosevelt. Eleanor Roosevelt is buried alongside him. The National Historic Site was established in 1945. While the early history of the house on the Springwood estate remains unclear it is believed that the central portion of the present-day home is formed by a large Federal style farmhouse constructed around the year 1800. In 1845 the estate was purchased by Josiah Wheeler a merchant from New York City. He remodeled the structure in the then-fashionable Italianate style expanding it to 15 rooms with a three-story tower at the south end and front and rear piazzas spanning the length of the home. In 1866 the estate which had been reduced to approximately one square mile was bought by James Roosevelt Sr. Franklin D. Roosevelt's father for US$40000 at a time when a textile worker's earnings were less than a dollar a day. The property featured a stable and horse track which was important to James an avid horse breeder. Through his death 34 years later in 1900 James made many improvements to the home and property. He enlarged the servants' wing adding two rooms and had a spacious carriage house built in the vicinity. In 1882 Franklin was born in what was then the second floor tower bedroom at the south end of the home. At the time it functioned as the master bedroom; the bedroom which he and later his sons used during boyhood is nearby on the same floor. In 1905 after he and Eleanor Roosevelt married the young couple moved in with his mother Sara. The estate remained the center of Roosevelt's life in all stages of his career. In 1915 Franklin together with his mother undertook a final major enlargement and remodeling of the home. This both accommodated his growing family and created an environment suitable for entertaining political associates which reflected his ambitions. Roosevelt contributed many ideas for the new design tempered by his mother's means. The home was more than doubled in size by adding two large fieldstone wings designed by Roosevelt a tower and a third story with a flat roof. The clapboard exterior was replaced with stucco and most of the porch was replaced with a balustraded fieldstone terrace and a small columned portico around the entrance. These alterations gave the exterior of the house the look of a Colonial Revival mansion. The interior while retaining much of the original layout was redesigned primarily with the aim of housing Roosevelt's growing collections of books paintings stamps and coins. The remodeling work was finished within one year in 1916. During his presidency from March 4 1933 until his death on April 12 1945 Franklin made almost 200 visits to Springwood. The main estate functioned as a "Summer White House" where the President hosted his political associates and other prominent national and international figures. In June 1939 when King George VI and Queen Elizabeth accompanied by Prime Minister of Canada William Lyon Mackenzie King as minister in attendance made the first visit of a reigning British monarch to the United States they were hosted at Springwood. Other guests included British prime minister Winston Churchill. Roosevelt used the estate as a retreat for himself and his political associates on the eves of three of the four elections in which he ran for president. When the incoming results indicated that he had won the election he would go onto the front terrace to deliver his victory speech. Roosevelt made his last visit to Springwood in the final week of March 1945 about two weeks before his death. At his own wish he was buried near the sundial in the Rose Garden on April 15 1945. His wife was buried at his side after her death in 1962. U. S. Government Printing Office [Department of the Interior, National Park Service] paperback

Roosevelt, Franklin D
Franklin D. Roosevelt Signed Presidential Cruise Pamphlets.
City of Washington: Published by the Smithsonian Institution 1939. First editions of two zoological pamphlets published as a result of collections and investigations made during Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Presidential Cruise of 1938 to the Galapagos both being presentation copies inscribed and signed “FDR†on the front wrapper. Octavo two pamphlets original brown printed paper wrappers illustrated. Presentation copies inscribed by Franklin Delano Roosevelt to his White House doctor "Ross McIntire from FDR." The pamphlets include: A New Dicrocoeliid Trematode Collected on the Presidential Cruise of 1938 Allen McIntosh June 8 1939 and The Polychaetous Annelids Collected on the Presidential Cruise of 1938 Olga Hartman June 9 1939. The recipient Admiral Ross McIntire was Roosevelt's personal White House physician an extremely important figure in a President's life especially in the case of FDR who had numerous health problems in addition to being a recovered polio victim. Any issues with his health were deliberately kept from the public and he was purposefully portrayed by both the physician and media as vibrant ultimately resulting in a lack of photographs depicting FDR on crutches or even near his crutches. In fine condition. Housed in a custom red cloth chemise with gilt titles to the spine. Accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity from University Archives confirming the authenticity of the signature. Scarce and desirable. The physician was granted perhaps the most private and personal access to a President bar none and the relationship of trust between a President and his physician was paramount. Presidential health translated to the appearance of the health of the nation. As such the association offered here with this signed and dedicated set is extraordinary and is accompanied by great provenance belonging to Roosevelt McIntire and author and historian Donald S. Carmichael. During the summer of 1938 Roosevelt cruised the Galapagos Islands on a scientific expedition sponsored by the Smithsonian. Aboard the U.S.S. Houston with him were scientists representing a wide field of studies. These monographs were published as government pamphlets and include at least three new species discovered and named for F.D.R. Roosevelt, Franklin
Franklin Delano Roosevelt Typed Letter Signed on Malaria 1929
Typed letter signed by FDR addressed to "Carp" regarding local matters including malaria in Warm Springs Georgia his personal retreat and therapeutic center. Two pages with the first page having official letterhead of the Governor of New York which was Roosevelt's position at the time. September 7 1929. Measuring 8" x 10.5" with blue printed ink and signature in pen. This letter just three years before Roosevelt becomes president and mere days before the Stock Market Crash of 1929 that ushered in the Great Depression sees Roosevelt concerned with issues in Meriwether County Georgia home to Warm Springs such as "the malaria situation" tree planting and road construction. Roosevelt first came to Warm Springs then Bullochville in 1924 for polio treatment as the town's natural thermal springs were one of the few remedies for the pain and discomfort he experienced ever since contracting the disease in 1921. Warm Springs had had a reputation as a spa town ever since the beginning of the century when vacationers from the yellow fever stricken coastal regions of Georgia ensconced to Warm Springs during the summers. In this letter we can see Roosevelt take stewardship over the town whose natural springs brought him much relief: "I hope the malaria situation is in hand. I think the county commissioners should have it put up to them very strongly that if Meriwether County gets the reputation for malaria it will absolutely and definitely block any possibility of its development as a health resort fro people from all over the United States. A good sized appropriation by the county ought to be made this year and expended under proper supervision i.e. not some local veterinarian or deputy sheriff!" This letter is addressed to Roosevelt's friend business associate and fellow polio survivor Arthur Carpenter Esq. of Warm Springs. Roosevelt's influenced loomed large over the town; he even successfully lobbied to have the town's name changed from Bullochville. Ironically despite his outsized position in the town as Governor of New York and later the longest serving American President Roosevelt's dwelling the "Little White House" was rather modest in size and appearance. Roosevelt's connection to the town would continue through on to his last days; he died in Warm Springs after several years of worsening health on April 12 1945. This letter is an interesting and valuable fusion of local and presidential history. In very good condition overall. unknown

Roosevelt, Franklin D.
Franklin D. Roosevelt Typed Letter Signed in Secretarial Hand October 19 1928 including original Envelope
1928. Book. VG. No Binding. Signed by Authors. Sized 8.5 x 11 inches on Franklin D. Roosevelt letterhead 26 lines signed "Franklin D. Roosevelt" in a very pretty secretarial hand plus the original mailing envelope addressed to Mr. A. A. Bridwell Louisville Kentucky. Roosevelt at the time was running for Governor of New York which he had done at the urging of sitting Governor Al Smith. He would win the election within about a month and begin his term January 1 1929. In the letter Roosevelt promotes Smith in the upcoming Presidential election against Herbert Hoover and presents relevant points for consideration. Hoover of course would win convincingly even taking New York state. Roosevelt however would very narrowly win the Governorship. unknown

Pitman. paperback. Good. 0x0x0. This is Pocket Books ed. Binding is firm; pale green wrapper with darker green margin is clean. Moderate shelf wear with creasing on lower front corner. 16mo. Many tributes by such prominent figures are Andrei Gromyko Walter Lippman Charles Collingwood as well as a number of anonymous comments from ordinary citizens; quotations from FDR himself often from his radio addresses and his Jefferson Day Address which has a trace of yellowed tape at upper margin; editorials.
