‎ROOSEVELT Theodore. MOORE Dan Tyler 1877 1941‎

‎Partly-Printed Autograph Document Signed‎

‎This lieutenant colonel served as an aide to Roosevelt during his first term and used to partake in friendly sparring bouts with the president; unknown to him at the time one of their matches in 1905 caused blindness in one of Roosevelt's eyes; not until October 1917 when Moore commanded the 310th Field Artillery at Camp Meade Maryland did he learn what had happened. He replied: "But could you ask for any better proof of the man's sportsmanship than the fact that he never told me what I had done to him never told anybody else that I know of -- at least it never got around to me till I saw in the papers the other day that he had said that he lost the sight of his eye while boxing with a captain of artillery who was his aide. He didn't name anybody then but I knew that he must have meant me for I happen to have been the only boxing aide he had who was in the artillery." Partly-Printed ADS 1p 7" X 3" Washington DC 1917 May 24. Near fine. Usual perforated cancellation. Bank vignette at left. Check drawn on The Riggs National Bank made out entirely in Moore's hand in black ink to N.F. Ramsey in the amount of $10 and handsomely signed -- just a few months before learning what his right hook had done to the Boss. unknown‎

‎Roosevelt Theodore‎

‎Perhaps the First Public Recorded Statement - and Almost Surely the Earliest Autograph on the Market - of Then 27-Year-Old Theodore Roosevelt in Favor of Racial Justice and Against Disenfranchisement of Blacks‎

‎I don’t care a snap of my finger whether a man fought on one side or the other so long as he wishes to see justice done to all his fellow citizens now…†He opposes “the present disenfranchisement of a class…†In the wake of the Civil War Union troops occupied the old Confederacy in a period called Reconstruction. The goal was ostensibly to rebuild the South; but in fact the main policy was to enfranchise southern blacks and with their votes many Republicans black and otherwise were elected to office. This released a firestorm of discontent in the old Confederacy that grew with every year. Meanwhile the North became increasingly weary of the burden of maintaining Reconstruction and voices were raised that it was time to bring the last of the occupying troops home and let the South govern itself. Then in 1877 in order to gain the swing electoral votes to place a Republican - Rutherford B. Hayes - in the White House a deal was struck to end Reconstruction. The Democratic Party in the South had a systematic plan to win the governorships of the southern states and then attempt to restore some of the way of life before the war most notably by trying to restrict the right of southern blacks to vote. The end of Reconstruction made that plan a viable one and in time the South became solidly Democratic and a program of segregation was implemented. By 1896 when the U.S. Supreme Court held that segregation was legal the plan was complete. The Virginia gubernatorial race of 1885 the Republican candidate was John Sergeant Wise who had fought for the Confederacy as a teenager but by 1885 was a champion for Republican causes. His Democratic opponent was Robert E. Lee’s nephew and Confederate general Fitzhugh Lee. It was a particularly hotly contested election - marred by accusations of corruption against the Democratic Party - with major consequences for the fate of the country and the cause of freedom for black people. Lee’s statewide popularity was enhanced by high-profile speaking engagements as a paid employee of the Richmond-based Southern Historical Association. As for Wise he was still looked upon with suspicion by some of the national leaders of the Republican Party. Specifically John Sherman William T. Sherman’s brother and one of the most significant members of the party was someone who could not support Wise perhaps affecting the election. Sherman served in both houses of Congress and was three times a candidate for president; in 1885 he became President Pro-Temp of the Senate at the time the second in line for the presidency. Lee won the general election though his margin of victory was quite narrow: 16000 votes out of 290000 cast. By November 1885 Theodore Roosevelt - although only 27 years old - was a major figure in the New York Republican party. From 1882-1884 he served in the New York State Assembly rising to the status of Republican leader. He already had national ambitions and in 1884 was a speaker at the GOP National Convention. It was no surprise therefore that he was keenly interested in the fate of the GOP in races throughout the country in 1885 and his voice and support was sought by party leaders. Roosevelt believed strongly in equality. As governor of New York he ended school segregation. Just one month after he was sworn in as President he invited Booker T. Washington a black civil rights activist to dine at the White House. The resulting uproar against Roosevelt over the claimed impropriety was enormous and only increased after TR on Washington’s recommendation appointed a black justice of the peace in the District of Columbia. The appointee Robert Terrell went on to become the first black federal judge. Roosevelt also appointed progressive judges and encouraged the prosecution of peonage cases in the South which meant opposing southern laws allowing blacks to be forced into involuntary servitude in order to pay off debts to their employers. Roosevelt explained “I meant literally what I said – that all I wanted was a square deal for the negro. If he is fit to vote by the test we apply to a white man let him vote. If he is unfit don’t. If he is unfit in an office turn him out; not because he is a negro but because he is unfit. If on the other hand he is fit appoint him; again not because he is a negro but because he is fit.†Booker T. Washington tells this story in his book “My Larger Educationâ€. “Before Mr. Roosevelt became President not a single colored man had ever been appointed so far as I know to a Federal office in any Northern state. Mr. Roosevelt determined to set the example by placing a colored man in a high office in his own home city so that the country might see that he did not want other parts of the country to accept that which he himself was not willing to receive. Some months afterward as a result of this policy the Hon. Charles W Anderson a black attorney was made collector of internal revenues for the second district of New York. This is the district in which Wall Street is located and the district that receives perhaps more revenue than any other in the United States. Later on Mr. Roosevelt appointed other colored men to high office in the North and West but I think that anyone who examines into the individual qualifications of the colored men appointed to office by Mr. Roosevelt will find in each case that they were what he insisted that they should be men of superior ability and of superior character.†In this letter to Wise Roosevelt expresses outrage at his loss just a few days earlier. It appears from our research to be the first statement of TR in which he takes a public stance foursquare for racial justice and against disenfranchisement of black voters. It is thus of the highest importance. It is also an early example of the key part morality played throughout his political career. Autograph letter signed two pages both sides of one sheet on his black-bordered mourning stationery in honor of both his wife and mother who died within hours of each other in 1884 New York November 15 1885 to Wise. “Many thanks for your kind letter. Your defeat was an outrage - pure and simple. We were equally unfortunate here. I think John Sherman and Joseph B. Foraker took the wrong tack in speaking of “ex-rebels’ treason stained saddle†etc. I don’t care a snap of my finger whether a man fought on one side or the other so long as he wishes to see justice done to all his fellow citizens now that is the point to be made; the present disenfranchisement of a class; it is a mistake to take other grounds.†We have found statements of TR on this subject while he was on the Civil Service Commission 1889-1895 but nothing earlier. This letter is an important piece of American history and of the struggle for social justice. Roosevelt did not forget Wise and as President appointed him to office unknown‎

‎ROOSEVELT ELEANOR‎

‎Personal Badges for the 1960 Democratic National Convention; with Typed Letter Signed‎

‎Los Angeles: np 1960. FIRST EDITION. Fine. ELEANOR ROOSEVELT'S OFFICIAL CONVENTION BADGES FOR THE 1960 DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION. With a signed letter from Roosevelt to her good friend Mayris Chaney concerning her arrival at the convention. TWO BADGES: Decorative medals held with red-white-and-blue ribbon the first reading "Mrs. F.D. Roosevelt / Former First Lady" on two metal bars between beautiful engraved patriotic designs at the top and bottom surrounding the text "United States of America" and "1960 Democratic National Convention Los Angeles"; the second badge again with the beautiful patriotic emblems reads "Honored Guest". The medals include the original box. On July 10 1960 the day before the Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles Eleanor Roosevelt refused to ride in a limousine to a reception preferring to walk half a mile with reporters. The absence of former President Harry Truman underscored the Democrats' break with the past and cast a warm light on former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt who attended the convention to support the faltering and ultimately doomed Presidential Campaign of Adlai Stevenson. In speaking for Stevenson Roosevelt questioned whether Kennedy's Catholic faith might cost him votes and said he didn't have the support of African Americans. Instead she backed a Stevenson-Kennedy political ticket. This trip in 1960 proved to be the final Political Convention which she attended. After the election Roosevelt chaired the John F. Kennedy administration's ground-breaking Committee which helped start Second-wave Feminism the "Presidential Commission on the Status of Women." In 1999 she was ranked in the top ten of Gallup's List of Most Widely Admired People of the 20th Century. Her letter to Mayris Chaney included in this collection is typed on Roosevelt's personal New York City letterhead and reads in full: June 24 1960 Dearest Tiny: I have had another change in plans and will arrive the night of July 10th getting in at 7:30 p.m. but you need not meet me as Frankie is having a car and driver at my disposal. Let's hope this is the last change! Anyhow it means I will be able to come to you sooner than I expected and this is a joy. With much love Devotedly signed E.R. handwritten Frankie is meeting me & - if avail we can come for you later after dinner. Mayris Chaney Mrs. Hershey Martin was a renowned dancer who worked with Roosevelt in the Office of Civilian Defense and one of her closet friends for almost twenty years. Their friendship began in the early thirties after Roosevelt's bodyguard Earl Miller introduced his charge to Chaney and her dance partner Eddie Fox. Roosevelt felt so at ease with Martin that she quickly nicknamed her "Tiny" included her in the close circle of friends with whom she could relax in private at Val-Kill and the White House in their homes and on vacation and served as Godmother to Martin's daughter Anna Eleanor named after Eleanor Roosevelt. The letter includes the original mailing envelope.
A REMARKABLE HISTORICAL ARTIFACT. np unknown‎

‎Photograph Signed‎

‎Washington DC: Barnett McFee Clinedinst 1907. First edition. Framed. Very Good. BEAUTIFUL SIGNED AND DATED PHOTOGRAPH OF THEODORE ROOSEVELT AT HIS DESK IN THE WHITE HOUSE WITH EXCEPTIONALLY LARGE ROOSEVELT SIGNATURE. Photographed by the White House photographer Barnett McFee Clinedinst with Clinedinst's 1907 copyright stamp at bottom left of photo the portrait shows Roosevelt looking into the camera with work spread before him including what appears to be a scenic nature photograph to his left. Signed in ink below the photograph in the photographer's mount: "Theodore Roosevelt / Oct 17th 1908". In 1908 Roosevelt was nearing the end of his second term as president; only a few weeks after he signed this photo Taft won the 1908 election to succeed him. The Roosevelt signature is a particularly fine example: crisp and dark and unusually large nearly 5.5 inches long. Sepia-toned silver print. Washington D.C. Photograph copyrighted 1907; signed in 1908. Image by itself: 8.5x6.5 inches. Archivally framed in handsome wood frame and UV-protecting museum glass to an overall size of 14x15.5 inches. ‎President Theodore Roosevelt Writes Naturalist John Burroughs Describing Hunting and the Behavior of Lynx and Bobcats‎

‎He describes his previous hunts and relishes in the discussion before turning his attention to the Panama Canal “In the course of many expeditions to and much time spent in regions where our American lynxes of different kind were found – both lucivees and bob cats – and after puzzling over hundreds of their trails in the snow and watching and sometimes shooting and hounding the animals have never seen anything that remotely suggested courses of conduct like those.I must now return to Panama and kindred subjects and leave lucivees bob cats etc. for a year to come.†No U.S. president is more popularly associated with nature and wildlife than is Theodore Roosevelt – life-long naturalist prodigious hunter tireless adventurer and visionary conservationist. As president Roosevelt provided federal protection for almost 230 million acres of land an area equivalent to the entire Eastern Seaboard from Maine to Florida. He initiated the U.S. Forest Service and sat aside 150 national forests; he signed the Antiquities Act and pursuant to it created the first 18 national monuments including the Grand Canyon and Muir Woods; an ardent ornithologist he set up the first 51 federal bird reservations; he named five national parks and added lands to a sixth – Yosemite; by executive order he established the first four national game preserves including the National Range; and the instituted first 24 reclamation or federal irrigation projects. As a naturalist crusader TR’s impact went far beyond the simple accomplishments; it resulted in changing the way people thought about the need to preserve America’s natural treasures. Nature was Theodore Roosevelt’s first passion. Long before he considered a career in politics he had a fascination with the natural world and thought he would be a naturalist. His father one of the founders of New York City’s Natural History Museum encouraged his son’s curiosity. It was on a summer trip to the country that five year old TR began to hunt for plants and animals to study. At the age of seven he began his career as a zoologist. As he recalled later it all started when he was walking up Broadway and saw a dead seal which raised questions in the young boy’s mind: Where had it been caught how long was it what species of seal was it He managed to acquire the seal’s skull the first specimen in what he called the “Roosevelt Museum of Natural History.†Roosevelt was a passionate naturalist and hunter. He loved the outdoors and the thrill of tracking and chasing game the skill in marksmanship the careful and deliberate recording of his observations about each hunt the demanding preservation of specimens and the pleasure of capturing in rich and vibrant language this experience so that he could share it with the world. His two best known expeditions Africa and South America were both sponsored scientific expeditions that in addition to affording TR an opportunity to hunt and obtain specimens for his own collection gathered valuable natural history data for some of the world’s most prominent museums including the Smithsonian Institution. Roosevelt was well acquainted with the noted naturalists of the time particularly John Burroughs. Burroughs contributed to the American understanding of nature through his large literary output which included works about Henry David Thoreau and his friend Walt Whitman whom he admired. In April 1903 the two men toured Yellowstone Park together and Burroughs wrote about it in Camping and Tramping with Roosevelt published in 1906. In planning the two-week trip to the park he had written Burroughs “For the last 18 months I have taken everything as it came from coal strikes to trolley cars and I feel I am entitled to a fortnight to myself.†TR arrived in time to set the Roosevelt Arch’s cornerstone in a grand ceremony. In 1907 Roosevelt publicly entered the nature-fakers controversy when he gave an interview and circulated an article defending Burroughs and stating his own views. Roosevelt esteemed Burroughs and called him Oom John the Roosevelts were of Dutch extraction an affectionate term meaning “uncle†in Dutch. Typed letter signed on White House letterhead January 2 1904 to Burroughs beginning with the behavior of Lynxes. “Dear Oom John Under exceptional and fortuitous circumstances two or three cats of any species might for the moment join in a common assault upon some prey. But in the course of many expeditions to and much time spent in regions where our American lynxes of different kind were found – both lucivees and bob cats – and after puzzling over hundreds of their trails in the snow and watching and sometimes shooting and hounding the animals have never seen anything that remotely suggested courses of conduct like those Long describes. They do not hunt in bands; they hunt separately. They do not follow the trail of game as wolves and foxes do though they may occasionally follow a fresh trail for a comparatively short distance. They occasionally why lie in wait but they are much more apt to stalk their prey rambling about through the woods until they see or smell it and then creeping up to it. I do not believe that a lynx or any other animal of the cat kind ever allured a caribou fawn or any other animal to its death in the way Long describes in an article on the subject and I have never seen or known of a trustworthy hunter who did see a party of lynxes act as he describes that party of lynxes acting as they crossed the country. However I must now return to Panama and kindred subjects and leave lucivees bob cats etc. for a year to come.†In November 1903 the The Hay-Bunau-Varilla Treaty or Canal Treaty was signed in the newly independent republic of Panama giving the United States rights to build a canal on the Panamanian isthmus for an annual payment of $250000. And in March 1904 TR would establish the Isthmian Canal Commission to see through the construction of the Panama Canal. Roosevelt orders them to "make the dirt fly" -- to start work on the canal as soon as possible unknown‎

‎President Theodore Roosevelt Appoints Victor H. Metcalf Secretary of Commerce and Labor‎

‎Metcalf’s on-site report to TR on the San Francisco earthquake sparked significant Federal aid to help the city rebuild An extremely uncommon Cabinet appointment the first of TR that we have had Victor H. Metcalf was a Congressman who served from 1899 to 1904. In Congress he served on the Naval Affairs and the Ways and Means committees where he pressed for the construction of a large battleship navy. His legislation for reclamation of arid lands by irrigation put him in touch with President Theodore Roosevelt who liked the idea so much he inserted it into his party’s platform in 1904. President Roosevelt appointed Metcalf Secretary of Commerce and Labor in 1904. He was only the second person to hold that post which was created in recognition of the importance and magnitude of the nation’s commercial and industrial growth and expansion. His department contained the Bureau of Manufactures the Bureau of Statistics the Bureau of Navigation the Bureau of Standards the Coast and Geodetic Survey the Lighthouse Service the Inspection of Immigrants the Seal Fisheries of Alaska the Steamboat Inspection Service the Bureau of the Census and more. Document signed large folio Washington December 7 1904 naming Metcalf Secretary of Commerce and Labor. The document is countersigned by John Hay as Secretary of State. In the post of Secretary of Commerce and Labor TR sent Metcalf to San Francisco in 1905 as an intermediator between the San Francisco school board and 91 Japanese students who were refused entry to public schools. A compromise was reached whereunder the students were permitted into the schools. As President Roosevelt's personal representative Metcalf traveled to San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake and fire to survey the damage. He issued a lengthy report to the President who provided significant Federal aid to help the city get through the crisis and rebuild. Metcalf served until December 12 1906 when he was appointed Secretary of the Navy. During his term there he oversaw the world cruise of the Great White Fleet. Appointments to presidential cabinets are quite uncommon this being the first of TR that we have ever had unknown‎
